Preparation of magnetically recoverable bentonite–Fe3O4–MnO2 composite particles for Cd(II) removal from aqueous solutions

Liying Jiang,Qichao Ye,Jianmeng Chen,Zhong Chen,Youli Gu

In this study, bentonite–Fe 3 O 4 –MnO 2 composite was synthesized by combining bentonite with Fe 3 O 4 and MnO 2 through co-precipitation. Vibrating-sample magnetometry , scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry , transmission electron microscopy , Brunauer–Emmett–Teller measurements, and X-ray powder diffraction techniques were used to characterize the composite. The composite consists of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles orderly assembled on the surface of bentonite and an outer layer of MnO 2 sheets. The composite’s particles possess a saturation magnetization of 13.4–30.5 emu/g and a high specific surface area (203.89 m 2 /g). The adsorption behaviors of the composite in Cd(II) removal were evaluated by batch equilibrium experiments. Kinetic and isothermal data fit well the pseudo-second-order and the Freundlich models, respectively. Adsorption reached equilibrium within 30 min, and the Freundlich capacity of the composite was 35.35 mg/g. The adsorption capacity of Cd(II) increased with increasing pH and was dependent on the ionic strength . Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the combination of surface hydroxyl groups of the composite and Cd(II) in the solution. The prepared composite can be easily recycled and reused by taking advantage of its magnetic properties . The results show that the designed composite is a promising absorbent for the treatment of Cd-contaminated water.

Reconstruction of Metal Ions Extracted from Coal Gangue to Synthesize Cost-effective Adsorbent for Highly Efficient Removal of Pollutants

Wen-ting Zhao,Huan Zhang,Ke Feng,Tian-yang Wang,Lei Han,Hai-feng Xing,Fei Huang,Wen-bo Wang

Graphical A feasible “one stone, three birds” strategy was developed to achieve simultaneously the harmless disposal and reutilization of waste acid-leaching liquid, the synthesis of new materials and the efficient decontamination of dye or Cd(II) pollutants, by converting Al, Mg-rich waste acid leachate into silicate adsorbent. The adsorbent showed excellent adsorption performance and reusability towards cationic dye and Cd(II) in real waters. An emerging “one stone, three birds” strategy was proposed to realize the value-added disposal of solid waste coal gangue (CG), the synthesis of superb adsorbent and the efficient decontamination of pollutants (i. e., dyes, heavy metals). In this process, the metal ions extrated from calcined coal gangue (CCG) was reconstituted by a one-step hydrothermal process to yield porous polymetallic silicate adsorbent (named HECCGA8h). The adsorbent has a high adsorption capacity of 270.27 and 185.53 mg/g for methylene blue (MB) and Cd(II), respectively. In the actual waters, the removal rate of MB by this adsorbent reaches 99.8% (in Yangtze River water) and 99.42% (in Seawater), and the removal rate of Cd(II) reaches 99.11% (in Yangtze River water) and 92.52% (in Seawater), respectively. Thermokinetic analysis showed that the adsorption of MB by HECCGA8h is spontaneous and endothermic with increased entropy, and the adsorption of Cd(II) is spontaneous and exothermic. The adsorption of MB is mainly driven by synergism of hydrogen bond, electrostatic attraction and ion exchange, and the adsorption of Cd(II) is mainly driven by the complexation and ion exchange between the surface group of the adsorbent and Cd(II). This research provides a new way for the realization of “treating waste with waste”.

Effective removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution based on multifunctional nanoporous silicon derived from solar kerf loss waste

Ziheng Yang,Xiuhua Chen,Shaoyuan Li,Wenhui Ma,Yi Li,Zudong He,Huanran Hu,Tong Wang

Recycling of kerf-loss slurry waste has become a meaningful and urgent issue in recent years. In this study, a novel hybrid material was prepared by Ag-assisted chemical etching kerf loss silicon waste and subsequently functionalized by a facile three-step graft process of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy-silane, maleic anhydride, and ethylenediamine, named as EDA-MAH-APTES-NPSi, which could work as an effective adsorbent for removal of Cd(Ⅱ) from aqueous solution. The effect of initial pH, absorption duration, and metal ion concentrations on absorption performance were investigated. The adsorption equilibrium achieved after 120 min, the maximum adsorption capacity reached up to 210.01 mg/g and pH was at 5.5. The adsorption kinetic was fitted in the pseudo-second-order model and the Freundlich equation provided an accurate description for adsorption behavior. The XPS and FT-IR analysis manifested that Cd(Ⅱ) removal might be ascribed to the adsorption on the surface organic functional group by chemical chelating reaction and the ion exchange reaction. The EDA-MAH-APTES-NPSi maintained excellent adsorption capacity which decreased approximately 15.3 % (from 40.5–34.3 mg/g) after five successive regenerated cycles. The work confirms the potential of Cd(Ⅱ) removal from aqueous solution based on the modified NPSi and opens up a new way for recycling silicon cutting waste.

Enhancing the removal performance of Cd(Ⅱ) from aqueous solutions by NaA zeolite through doped thiourea reduced GO which is trapped within zeolite crystals

Juan Liu,Zhujian Huang,Jie Sun,Yixuan Zou,Beini Gong

In this study, thiourea reduced graphene oxide/NaA zeolite composite (tGO-Zeo) was successfully prepared by a facile two-step synthetic route and used as an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution. Characterization of the composite material showed that tGO was entrapped within zeolite crystalline particles and intimately interacted with the zeolite framework. Furthermore, the presence of tGO considerably reduced zeolite crystal size and altered crystal morphology, turning cubic zeolite crystals of micrometer size into nanometer irregular particles. Batch adsorption experiment for Cd(II) removal was conducted and the adsorption performance of tGO-Zeo and Zeo (zeolite) were determined. It was shown that doped tGO significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of zeolite by 31.54%. The adsorption mechanism differs for tGO-Zeo and Zeo, and tGO-Zeo has higher affinity for Cd(II). The adsorption capacity of tGO-Zeo with a tGO doping amount of 1.26% (wt%) was estimated to be 196 mg/g (1.74 mM/g) at 30 °C and superior to most previously reported zeolite based composites, which often contain large amounts of dopants . The effects of pH and ionic strength on adsorption suggest that ion exchange and coordination are responsible for Cd(II) adsorption by tGO-Zeo. Humic acid can slightly increase Cd(II) adsorption performance of tGO-Zeo, which may be due to tGO-Zeo—humic acid—Cd(II) complexes formation. Therefore, tGO-Zeo composite is a cost-effective and eco-friendly adsorbent for efficient removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions.

Removal behavior and mechanism of amino/carboxylate-functionalized Fe@SiO2 for Cr(VI) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions

Gao Jingqing,Liu Xiaobang,Ren Peng,Gao Jianlei,Chen Yong,Chen Zhijun

The novel iron-based reductive particles, functionalized with amino and carboxylic functional groups, were synthesized to remove Cr(VI) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The morphological structure and surface functional groups of new composites were characterized with SEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, and other techniques. The influence of pH, initial concentration, adsorbent dosing, and temperature on removal efficiencies were explored by batch experiments. The adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) increased by 159.95% and 76.60%, respectively, compared with Fe 0 , reaching 47.638 and 62.047 mg/g. EDS and XPS analysis showed most of Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) and precipitated as ferrochrome oxide, and Cd(II) was mainly precipitated as hydroxide. Reduction-precipitation and complexation may predominate in the removal process of Cr(VI), which fitted well with Langmuir and Freundlich models and pseudo-second-order kinetics. While hydrolysis and complexation may prevail for Cd(II), which was suited with Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. Having good magnetic properties, the A/C-Fe@SiO 2 particles exhibited excellent reusable stability after four times regeneration experiments, promising a prospect for in-situ remediations of groundwater contaminated by Cr(VI) and Cd(II).

Fe-Mn co-embed carbon spheres for aqueous divalent Cd removal

Jiahui Deng,Yalin Cheng,Min Liu,Biyang Tu,Shan Xue,Haisheng Tao

In this study, Fe-Mn co-embed sodium alginate carbon spheres (Fe-Mn/SA-C) were prepared as a cost-effective adsorbent for aqueous Cd(II) removal by a facile pyrolysis method. The morphology and chemical composition of Fe-Mn/SA-C were explored with various characterized techniques. The results indicate that Fe-Mn/SA-C possess porous structures and abundant oxide-based functional groups. Fe-Mn/SA-C exhibits excellent adsorption properties for aqueous Cd(II) and the adsorption process is pH-dependent. The adsorption data could fit pseudo second-order and Langmuir models well, suggesting that chemisorption is a dominant adsorption mechanism and the maximum adsorption capacity is 280.11 mg −1 . Thermodynamic analysis demonstrates that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanisms of Cd(II) include the complexation of Cd(II) with oxygen-based functional groups, precipitation, and ion exchange. Finally, the granulated and magnetic Fe-Mn/SA-C is an efficient and practical adsorbent for cadmium-containing wastewater treatment.

Optimized preparation of gangue waste-based geopolymer adsorbent based on improved response surface methodology for Cd(II) removal from wastewater

Chaowei Dong,Nan Zhou,Jixiong Zhang,Wanan Lai,Jianfei Xu,Junlin Chen,Runhua Yu,Yepeng Che

Resource utilization of gangue solid waste has become an essential research direction for green development. This study prepared a novel gangue based geopolymer adsorbent (GPA) for the removal of Cd(II) from wastewater using pretreatment gangue (PG) as the main raw material. The ANOVA indicated that the obtained quadratic model of fitness function (R 2  > 0.99, P-value <0.0001) was significant and adequate, and the contribution of the three preparation conditions to the removal of Cd(II) was: calcination temperature > Na 2 CO 3 :PG ratio > water-glass solid content. The hybrid response surface method and gray wolf optimization (RSM-GWO) algorithm were adopted to acquire the optimum conditions: Na 2 CO 3 :PG ratio = 1.05, calcination temperature of 701 °C, solid content of water glass of 22.42%, and the removal efficiency of Cd(II) by GPA obtained under the optimized conditions (GPAC) was 97.84%. Adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and characterization by XRD, FTIR, Zeta potential , FSEM-EDS and BET were utilized to investigate the adsorption mechanism of GPAC on Cd(II). The results showed that the adsorption of Cd(II) from GPAC was consistent with the pseudo-second-order model (R 2  = 0.9936) and the Langmuir model (R 2  = 0.9988), the adsorption was a monolayer adsorption process and the computed maximum Cd(II) adsorption (50.76 mg g −1 ) was approximate to experimental results (51.47 mg g −1 ). Moreover, the surface morphology of GPAC was rough and porous with a specific surface area (SSA) of 18.54 m 2  g −1 , which provided abundant active sites, and the internal kaolinite was destroyed to produce a zeolite-like structure where surface complexation and ion exchange with Cd(II) through hydroxyl (-OH) and oxygen-containing groups (-SiOH and -AlOH) were the main adsorption mechanisms. Thus, GPAC is a lucrative adsorbent material for effective Cd(II) wastewater treatment , complying with the “high value-added” usage of solid wastes and “waste to cure poison” green sustainable development direction.

Rapid and efficient removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution in a wide range pH by sodalite type sorbents using cellulose superfine fiber as a template agent

Shanshan He,Shengle Kang,Lan Zhang,Xiang Dong,Yan Zhao,Fangfang Li,Qihong Cen

Sodalite is a common zeolite , which is often discarded or ignored due to its small pore size and poor adsorption capacity. In this study, two sodalite type materials , CSF-S and N-CSF-S, were synthesized using cellulose superfine fiber (CSF) as template. Its unique scaly structure not only enhances its adsorption capacity for Cd (II), but also improves its adsorption efficiency. At 298 K and the initial Cd (II) concentration of 100 mg/L, the adsorption equilibrium of CSF-S was achieved within 30 min, which is 98% shorter than that of traditional sodalite. The adsorption of Cd (II) by CSF-S and N-CSF-S is an endothermic process and at 298 K the adsorption capacity could be as high as 260.1 and 284.1 mg/L, respectively, which were 1.9 and 2.0 times of the original sodalite, far higher than the reported similar adsorbents, and competitive to over other types of adsorbents. In addition, with low zero points of charge CSF-S (pH zpc around 1) and N-CSF-S (pH zpc around 3) can effectively remove Cd(II) over a wide pH range, superior to most zeolitic sorbent materials. Therefore, this work proposes a simple and cost-effective synthesis method for the sodalite type sorbents with high Cd(II) adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate, and also provides some basis for the study of heavy metal adsorption materials in aqueous systems.

Removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution using cross-linked chitosan–zeolite composite

Feng Zhang,Manman Wang,Limei Zhou,Xiaoyan Ma,Yafen Zhou

Cross-linked chitosan–zeolite composite was prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Adsorption of Cd(II) by the cross-linked chitosan–zeolite composite as a function of solution pH, contact time, initial Cd(II) concentration, and temperature was investigated systematically by batch experiments. The obtained results showed that the removal of Cd(II) was pH dependent and the optimum adsorption was achieved at pH 7.0. The adsorption process could be described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption. The batch adsorption data could be well elucidated by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(II) on the cross-linked chitosan–zeolite composite at 25°C determined from the Langmuir model was 102.15 mg/g. The adsorbent was successfully regenerated using EDTA, HNO3, and HCl solution as desorbent, respectively.

Phosphate modified magnetite@ferrihydrite as an magnetic adsorbent for Cd(II) removal from water, soil, and sediment

Haoyang Fu,Hongfei He,Runliang Zhu,Lan Ling,Weixian Zhang,Qingze Chen

This work successfully fabricated a novel magnetic adsorbent, i.e., phosphate modified magnetite@ferrihydrite (Mag@Fh-P), and explored its potential application for Cd(II) removal from water, soil, and sediment. To synthesize the adsorbent, ferrihydrite-coated magnetite (Mag@Fh) was firstly developed with partially acid-dissolved natural magnetite particles, followed by in-situ synthesis of ferrihydrite on magnetite surface via alkali addition. Selection of natural magnetite as iron source for ferrihydrite synthesis and as magnetic core is believed to save the cost of adsorbent. Then, phosphate was loaded on Mag@Fh by impregnation-heating treatment to produce Mag@Fh-P. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the Cd(II) adsorption on Mag@Fh-P could reach equilibrium within 60 min, and the calculated adsorption capacity using Langmuir model was 64.1 mg/g, which was significantly higher than that on magnetite (0.44 mg/g) and Mag@Fh (23.9 mg/g). The results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and batch adsorption experiments confirmed that both ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction contributed to Cd(II) adsorption. Besides, Mag@Fh-P can also be an efficient amendment for soil and sediment remediation. The spent Mag@Fh-P could be easily recovered via magnetic separation, accompanied by the significant decrease in total Cd(II) concentration in soil/sediment. At an adsorbent dosage of 2 wt%, 0.82 and 0.74 mg/kg of total Cd(II) in soil and sediment was removed, respectively. In all, the synthesized Mag@Fh-P as adsorbent has the merits of cost effectiveness, fast adsorption rate, high adsorption capacity, and easy separation, and thus it has promising application for the removal of heavy metal cations from water, soil, and sediment.

Study on using crystalline celluloses as templates for preparation of hierarchical LTA Zeolite for fast Cd(II) removal

Lan Zhang,Keli Zhang,Shengle Kang,Shanshan He,Xiang Dong,Yan Zhao,Fangfang Li,Qihong Cen

Crystalline celluloses , such as microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), which are originated from biomass, were utilized as templates to prepare hierarchical LTA zeolites . The effect of both size and surface properties of crystalline cellulose on the zeolite synthesis were carefully discussed. As-prepared zeolite based on surface-modification NCC showed hierarchical porous structure with monolithic morphology inherited from nanocrystalline cellulose. Its specific surface area was measured to be 18.3 m 2 /g, which was approximately 3.4 times that of the traditional zeolite A (Z0, 5.4 m 2 /g). Owing to its unique structure, ZNSC facilitated fast Cd(II) adsorption with the adsorption equilibrium time shortened by 81.3%. Kinetics study revealed that intraparticle diffusion was significantly enhanced and the effective diffusion coefficient increased by near 5 times. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity achieved by ZNSC was 324.3 mg/g at 283 K, as calculated from the Langmuir model, which was 1.3 times that of Z0. These results are obtained when the grain size of ZNSC is larger than that of Z0, reflecting the superiority of the hierarchical structure in enhancing adsorption performance and thus providing a facile yet robust strategy for designing hierarchically structured zeolites for rapid and efficient wastewater treatment .
