Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) phosphor transparent ceramics prepared via vacuum hot pressing (HP) suffer from carbon contamination owing to the graphite mould used in the HP system. The conventional method was to dope LiF as a decarburizing agent, but carbon contamination cannot be effectively prevented when preparing Ce:YAG ceramics via a solid-phase reaction combined with HP sintering. In this study, we report the fabrication of highly transparent Ce:YAG ceramics via HP sintering with a flexible hexagonal boron nitride (BN-h) wrapping, which prevents carbon contamination of the samples caused by the graphite mould used in the process. High-transmittance Ce:YAG ceramics were prepared at a medium temperature of 1600 °C and a low vacuum pressure of 10 −1 Pa.

High-power phosphor-converted laser lighting and laser display have gained significant attention due to their superior energy efficiency and long lifespan. However, the elevated operating temperatures under high-power excitation induce severe thermal quenching of phosphor materials, compromising the thermal stability and emission performance. To address this issue, we proposed a multi-component co-doping strategy by incorporating Ba2+/Si4+ and Sr2+/Si4+ into Ce: YAG phosphor ceramics. The optimized Sr05Ba050 sample demonstrated exceptional thermal stability, retaining 96.56% of its emission intensity at 423 K. Moreover, the thermal saturation threshold increased to 73 W/mm2, significantly surpassing that of undoped Ce: YAG. This improvement is attributed to a combination of lattice stabilization and reduced electron-phonon coupling induced by the co-doping approach. Additionally, the optimized sample achieved a luminous efficiency of radiation (LER) of 248.82 lm/W and exhibited a lower surface temperature under high-power excitation. These findings highlight the effectiveness of Ba2+/Si4+ and Sr2+/Si4+ co-doping in mitigating thermal quenching and enhancing high-temperature performance, providing valuable insights for next-generation high-power lighting and display applications.

To withstand higher power density (PD), exhibit higher luminous efficiency (LE), use in smaller size and lower cost has become the direction of solid-state lighting technology. In the face of high-density laser irradiation and strong thermal shock , improving the performance of color conversion materials related to laser illumination has become a research hotspot. In this study, The Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ phosphor-in-glass film (Ce:YAG-PiF) was obtained by scraping method. The optimized Ce: YAG-PiF external quantum efficiency (EQE) reaches 74.7%, closing to the phosphor (EQE = 78.47%). Excitingly, at 573 K, the thermal conductivity of sample remains at 9.47 W m −1 K −1 . Besides, the sample has an ultra-high LE of 256 lm/W @ 32.47 W/mm 2 . After recombining with the red phosphor CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ (CASN), the color rendering index (CRI) is 84.6, the correlation color temperature (CCT) is 5594 K, and the LE is 192.91 lm/W @ 39.87 W/mm 2 . More importantly, the relative intensity of laser module packaged by Ce:YAG & CASN-PiF decreased by 15% when tested at 4 W for 24 h. Besides, the packaged laser flashlight has good collimation within a visible illuminance. All the results show that the prepared sample can maintain high emission intensity at high laser PD and have a good heat resistance, which is a promising color conversion material in the field of solid-state laser illumination.

The shortage of red-light emission in Ce 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (Ce:YAG) luminescent ceramics is a bottleneck problem to realize the key applications of ceramics based white light-emitting diode (LED) and laser diode (LD) devices. However, the energy band-gap engineering for Ce 3+ ion via host substitution or red-emission ions co-doping always leads to its decrease of luminescence efficiency (LE), while a spectrum overlay strategy would be simple and effective. In this study, multilayer composite structure Ce:YAG/Cr:YAG transparent ceramics (TCs) with high color rendering index (CRI) were fabricated by tape casting and vacuum sintering. An organic tape casting protocol with low toxicity and environmental protection was developed and the amounts of dispersants, binders, and plasticizers were systematically optimized to produce good quality tapes with no defects. The transmittance of ceramic reached 78% at 800 nm. By using a 455 nm blue chip, the CRI of the Ce:YAG/Cr:YAG TCs based LED device was increased from 26.7 to 77.5, and the LE was decreased from 181.5 to 10.4 lm/W. Additionally, the optimized LE and CRI for LD device were 130.2 lm/W and 78.1, respectively. Therefore, this research displays that the design and implementation of ceramic functional layer to achieve the essential enhancement of CRI in TC based white lighting is a promising method through the tape casting forming technology.

In this work, a series of Al 2 O 3 –Ce:YAG phosphor powders were synthesized by regulating the excess Al 3+ of (Y,Ce) 3 Al 5 O 12 via coprecipitation method for the first time, where Al 3+ , Ce 3+ , and Y 3+ elements were uniformly distributed. With the increase of Al 3+ content, the morphology of the powders changed from wormlike shapes to flaky shapes, and Y 3 Al 5 O 12 phases had a tendency to convert to YAlO 3 phases. The x wt.% Al 2 O 3 –(Y 0.999 Ce 0.001 ) 3 Al 5 O 12 ( x = 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70) composite phosphor ceramics (CPCs) were obtained by vacuum sintering (1775°C × 10 h), where Al 2 O 3 and Ce:YAG phases were also well-distributed. When the Al 2 O 3 content was 30–40 wt.%, the average grain size of Al 2 O 3 was close to that of Ce:YAG. A solid-state laser lighting device was constructed by a 450 nm laser source and CPCs in a reflection mode. By adjusting the laser power, the correlated color temperature (CCT) values of white laser diodes (LDs) were achieved close to the standard white light of 6500 K. Impressively, the white LDs equipped with the 40 wt.% Al 2 O 3 -containing CPCs showed the optimum CCT of 6498 K (color coordinates: 0.31 and 0.38), as well as a high luminous flux of 1169 lm and efficiency of 166 lm/W at the LD power of 7.05 W. This work has provided a potential idea to optimize the composition uniformity of Al 2 O 3 –Ce:YAG CPCs as also to explore their excellent performance in the application of white laser lighting.

Nowadays, major commercial w-LEDs fabricated by the traditionally gold-wire-welding packaging technology have undergone considerable development as indoor/outdoor lighting sources due to its high-energy utilization efficiency, long service life, environmental friendliness, and excellent chromatic stability. While, new generation applications in projections, automotive lighting, street lighting, plaza lighting, and high-end general lighting need further improvements in power handling and light extraction. Herein, transparent Ce:YAG glass-ceramics (GCs) phosphor was prepared by low-temperature co-sintering polycrystalline Ce:YAG phosphor powder and home-made PbO-B 2 O 3 -ZnO-SiO 2 glass powder. Thereafter, the flip-chip (FC) w-LEDs were fabricated with the GCs phosphor plates and FC blue chips. The GCs-based FC w-LEDs show not only excellent heat- and humidity-resistance characteristics, but also superior optical performances with an LE of 112.8 lm/W, a CRI of 71.2, a CCT of 6103 K as well as a chromaticity coordinate of (0.3202, 0.3298), under a high operation current of 400 mA. The technology route will open a practically commercial feasible approach to achieve excellent performances for advanced high-power FC w-LEDs.

Solid laser lighting with high photoelectric conversion efficiency and compact size has been increasingly vital in lighting applications. Extensive research has been conducted to obtain high-quality color converters for application to high-power and high-luminance laser lighting. Currently, Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor in glass (Ce:PiG) and Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor-in-glass film (Ce:PiF) possessing high efficiency, low cost, easy fabrication, and controllable chromaticity are becoming the most mainstream research directions. In this study, by modifying the glass particle size and sintering temperature, investigating the relevant host glass, and so forth, high-performance Ce:PiG was developed through a one-step co-sintering technology. It possesses a high internal quantum efficiency, approaching 100% of the original phosphors (92.5%). The luminous efficacy (LE) of the Ce:PiG was 240 lm/W at 2.18 W/mm2 under 450 nm blue laser diode (LD) excitation, which is the best result yet reported. Furthermore, to enhance the laser saturation threshold, the fabricated Ce:PiF relying on a sapphire substrate can withstand an 8 W/mm2 blue incident power density. The obtained sample can even reach an LE of 251.5 lm/W, which is an obvious improvement to Ce:PiG. In addition, the result, an LD module combined with the sample that meets the standard white light source, indicates that this work has good prospects for white laser lighting.

In recent years, the development of solid-state lighting devices has increasingly shifted towards high-power laser illumination, making it imperative to develop fluorescent conversion materials with exceptional thermal stability and luminous quality. In this study, we introduced a highly reflective TiO 2 substrate in combination with a high thermal conductivity AlN substrate to design a Ce:YAG-PiG-TiO 2 -AlN Film (Ce:YAG PTAF) color converter with outstanding photothermal performance. Remarkably, the thermal conductivity of this material reaches 48.28 W m −1 K −1 . Notably, the optimized PTAF can withstand a high-power output of up to 12.14 W in a static environment, with a maximum luminous flux (LF max ) of 2284.6 lm and maximum luminous efficacy (LE max ) of 222.35 lm W −1 , showcasing its excellent optical properties. Furthermore, the fabricated Ce:YAG-PiG-TiO 2 -AlN-Wheel (Ce:YAG PTAW), equipped with a motor operating at 7200 r/min, emits an extraordinary brightness of 4404 lm under 88 W of ultra-high laser irradiation, with stability surpassing that of commercial silicone color wheels, thanks to its superior Li 2 O-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (LAS) glass system. Interestingly, we designed an innovative spatially separated two-color segmented wheel structure, effectively mitigating the photon reabsorption phenomenon caused by the overlap of the fluorescent powder absorption peaks. When the ratio of Ce:YAG to Ce:GdYAG is 240:120, it yields white light with a color rendering index (CRI) of 80.2, and luminous flux remaining at 3317.8 lm. When encapsulated in a reflective module, it accurately reflects the true color states of objects. These results collectively indicate that both Ce:YAG PTAF and PTAW possess significant application potential in the realm of high-power laser illumination.

Ce: YAG- Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics are regarded as highly promising materials for laser illumination application due to their high luminous efficacy and thermal stability. Nevertheless, the Ce: YAG ceramics exhibit limited color rendering index (CRI) for indoor lighting due to their low red emission component. In this study, we synthesized high-performance Ce, Mn-doped (Y, Tb) 3 Al 5 O 12 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramic phosphors via a vacuum solid-state sintering method. It was observed that the introduction of Mn 2+ ions created a second luminescence center with an emission peak centered at 580 nm. As the Mn 2+ concentration increased, the emission peak redshifted from 580 nm to 591 nm, leading to a significant enhancement in the color rendering index of the ceramics. The cross-energy transfer between Tb 3+ and Mn 2+ , Ce 3+ ions augmented the absorption and conversion of blue light by the ceramics, thereby reducing the correlated color temperature greatly. Based on these findings, ceramics with a Ce 3+ concentration of 3 at% and a Mn 2+ concentration of 4 at% exhibited the highest CRI values (81.3 and 75.6) under both laser excitation and LED excitation, establishing them as strong candidates for achieving high color rendering in white LED/LD illumination applications.

The key to realizing the applications of ceramic based laser lighting devices depends on the heat management capability of color converters. In order to sufficiently absorb the blue light and smoothen the temperature gradient of luminescent ceramics, multistage gradient doping Ce 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (Ce:YAG) transparent ceramics (TCs) with five different concentrations were designed, including 0.01 at%, 0.05 at%, 0.1 at%, 0.2 at% and 0.4 at% Ce. The composite green bodies were prepared by aqueous tape casting and multistage gradient doping Ce:YAG TCs, with concentrations from low to high, were fabricated by vacuum sintering. The in-line transmission values at 800 nm of composite structure Ce:YAG TCs could reach 80.3%. Under 21.13 W/mm 2 blue laser excitation, the gradient doping Ce:YAG TC (1.32 mm) realized a high luminous efficacy of 280.3 lm/W, which was 15.8% higher than that of 0.15 at% Ce:YAG TC (240.27 lm/W). Finally, during lighting process, the input-output temperature differences (T in -T out ) between excitation surface and light-exit surface of 0.15 at% Ce:YAG TC was 5 ℃, while that in gradient doping TC reduced by 50% (2.5 ℃). The results indicate that the multistage gradient doping Ce:YAG TCs will be an interesting color converter for high-power and energy-saving laser-driven lighting.

The field of solid-state laser illumination is developing rapidly. Phosphor-in-glass film (PiF) has been proved to be a promising color-conversion material for high-quality laser illumination due to their excellent chromatic properties, tunability, and simple fabrication process. However, conventional fabrication methods that fix the phosphor layer directly onto small-sized therally conductive substrate struggle to simultaneously achieve both high luminous flux and high luminous efficiency. In this study, Ce:YAG PiF@Coating film (PiF@CF) was obtained by coating Ta 2 O 5 composite film on the surface of sapphire substrate which was not coated with phosphor layer through a unique coating film design. The coated Ce:YAG PiF@CF achieves synergistic optimization of luminous efficiency (LE) and luminous flux (LF). While achieving a laser performance of 243.63 lm/W peak LE and holding 1641 lm @ 8.32 W, which is twice that of the uncoated Ce:YAG PiF (824.63 lm). In addition, the sample maintains an excellent thermal conductivity of 12.92 W/(m K) at 573 K. This study provides a new solution for high-power laser illumination fluorescence conversion materials that take into account the three aspects of luminous efficiency, luminous flux and heat dissipation performance through the coating process, laying an important foundation for its application in the fields of lighting and display.

Ce:YAG phosphor-in-glass (PiG) has been widely recognized as a high-performance light conversion material for high-power white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The compositional design of the glass matrix plays a critical role in determining the optical, physical, and chemical properties of the resulting PiG. In this study, a novel glass matrix based on the NaF-Na 2 O-K 2 O-MgO-CaO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 system was proposed, which was integrated with Ce:YAG phosphor to fabricate Ce:YAG-PiG via a low-temperature sintering process at 640 ℃. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL) analyses confirmed that the Ce:YAG crystalline phase retained excellent crystallinity within the glass matrix. The synthesized Ce:YAG-PiG achieved a maximum internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 84.62%, which is close to that of the pristine phosphor (90.38%). Microstructural analysis revealed a distinct interface between the phosphor and the glass matrix, with no signs of erosion. Additionally, its porous structure facilitates heat dissipation and light scattering. Ce:YAG-PiG exhibited remarkable thermal stability, retaining 91.4% of its initial luminescence intensity at 175 ℃, which significantly outperformed the pristine Ce:YAG phosphor that retained only 84.3% of its initial intensity under the same conditions. Notably, Ce:YAG-PiG showed a weakened thermal quenching effect with increasing temperature, thus exhibiting a significantly lower luminescence intensity decay compared to pure Ce:YAG powder. In the final optical performance evaluation, Ce:YAG-PiG samples with a phosphor loading of 50 wt% and a thickness of 0.5 mm achieved a high luminous efficacy of 165.6 lm/W at an operating current of 350 mA, with a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4728 K, which is close to that of standard cool white light. These experimental results demonstrate that Ce:YAG-PiG maintains stable luminescent performance under high-power operating conditions, laying a solid foundation for the practical application and development of high-power white LEDs.
