In this work, the effect of grain size and uniformity of the precursor powder on the electrical property of ceria based electrolytes was investigated. Gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) samples were treated under different calcination temperatures (600 °C and 1300 °C), where their grain size and uniformity were adjusted by varying the ratio of 1300 °C powder in precursors. The phase composition, morphology and conductivities of mixed GDC samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM) and AC impedance, respectively. XRD results revealed that all GDC samples are single cubic fluorite-type structures. As the content of 1300 °C powder increased, the grain boundary conductivity first dropped markedly to the minimum at the ratio x = 5% and then basically unchanged, whereas no significant change was observed in bulk conductivity. Our study demonstrated that the ratio of the higher calcination temperature powder in the mixed precursor powder gave rise to the variation of grain size uniformity and the electrical properties of GDC samples.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are pivotal in addressing global energy and environmental challenges, but their durability and maintenance costs are often limited by interface issues between yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes and active cathodes at high operating temperatures. Cerium-based oxides, particularly gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC), have proven effective in mitigating these challenges by acting as efficient buffer layers. In this study, we present a one-step spin-coating method for fabricating a thin, dense GDC buffer layer using GDC nanoparticles. A ∼1 μm thick, high-density (density >80 %) buffer layer is achieved by calcining at 1250 °C, forming a continuous and cohesive interface with the electrolyte. Single cells incorporating this buffer layer exhibit an ohmic resistance of 0.15 Ω cm 2 and achieve a peak power density of 0.81 W cm −2 at 800 °C. Stability is demonstrated by operating the cell at 0.4 A cm −2 and 750 °C for over 200 h with stable performance. Furthermore, the fabrication method has been successfully scaled up for 10 × 10 cm 2 large-area cells, yielding a power output of 31.6 W at 0.7 V at 750 °C. The proposed scalable and cost-effective fabrication technique offers significant potential for the large-scale production of high-performance SOFCs.

An effective symmetric structured dual phase mixed conducting oxygen separation membrane made of 60 wt% Ce 0.9 Gd 0.1 O 2-δ − 40 wt% Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3-δ (60CGO-40BSCF) were prepared by the aqueous tape casting. The symmetric ceramic membranes consisted of a dense thin layer with a thickness of around 50 µm in the middle, and two porous substrates (around 290 µm thick) located on the two sides of the middle thin dense layer. In this case, both the bulk diffusion of oxygen ion and surface gas exchange are simultaneously optimized to enlarge the oxygen permeation flux. In addition, a symmetric structure favors to stabilize the ceramic membrane. Compared with monotonous dense membrane, the porous supported symmetric membrane delivered higher permeation fluxes, e.g., 3.78 ml cm −2 min −1 at 975 °C under an air/He gradient, while an oxygen permeation flux of 1.42 ml cm −2 min −1 was obtained for the monotonous dense membrane. As increasing the O 2 partial pressure in the feed side to 0.8 atm, an oxygen permeation flux of 8.67 ml cm −2 min −1 was obtained. The current study implies that the porous supported symmetric membrane structure is an efficient strategy to enhance the oxygen permeation flux.

Metal-supported solid oxide fuel cells (MS-SOFCs) exhibit numerous advantages, including thermal cycle stability, rapid start-up and lower costs. However, the slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode, especially at intermediate-low temperatures, poses a critical challenge to the development of MS-SOFCs. Here, we report a synergistic effect of co-doping in a cation-ordered double perovskite type material, Sm(Ba0.5Sr0.5)Co2-xFexO5+δ (SBSCFx), which has enhanced catalytic activity for ORR and chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O2-δ (GDC). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were used to examine how Fe-doping in SBSCFx impacts the functional properties. A composite cathode with GDC was further prepared to enhance thermal compatibility with GDC, which effectively reduces the thermal expansion of the SBSCFx cathode from 23.35×10-6 K-1 to 15.04×10-6 K-1. The electrochemical results of symmetrical cells and the DRT fitting analysis demonstrate that the SBSCFx-GDC composite cathode exhibits strong ORR activity. Notably, the SBSCF10-GDC composite cathode achieves a remarkably low polarization resistance of 0.05 Ω·cm² at 650°C. The metal-supported single cell with SBSCF10-GDC cathode exhibited an open-circuit voltage of 0.85 V and showed a peak power density of 833 mW cm-² at 650℃. Furthermore, its stability during long-term cell operation highlights its potential as a cathode for intermediate-low temperature metal-supported SOFCs.
