Enhancement of Visible-Light Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production by CeCO3OH in g-C3N4/CeO2 System

Rui Tong,Zhi Sun,Xiongwei Zhong,Xina Wang,Jincheng Xu,Ye Yang,Baomin Xu,Shuangpeng Wang,Hui Pan

Graphical Photocatalytic hydrogen production : g-C 3 N 4 /CeCO 3 OH/CeO 2 ternary composite showed greatly enhanced photocatalytic performance for hydrogen production under visible light irradiation. Promoting the separation of photo-generated carriers is significantly important to improve the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production. Therefore, we prepared g-C 3 N 4 /CeCO 3 OH/CeO 2 (CeCeCN) ternary nanocomposite via an easy synthetic way using g-C 3 N 4 and CeO 2 as reactants. A CeCO 3 OH layer was formed and resulted in the novel ternary photocatalyst. The CeCeCN composite shows superior photocatalytic (PC) H 2 generation performance in sunlight excitation. The H 2 evolution rate is about 764 μmol h −1 g −1 , which is over 11 times larger than those of g-C 3 N 4 and CeO 2 . Compared with g-C 3 N 4 and CeO 2 , CeCeCN further shows a larger photo-response current density and a lower charge-transfer resistance. The remarkably increased photocatalytic property of CeCeCN is because of the efficient charge migration induced by the formed heterojunction. Our findings demonstrate that building multi-heterostructures can liberate more excited electrons for efficient hydrogen production under sunlight.

Self-assembly of structured CeCO3OH and its decomposition in H2 for a novel tactic to obtain CeO2-x with excellent photocatalytic property

Xisong Mao,Xuewen Xia,Junqi Li,Chaoyi Chen,Xiaoying Gu,Song Li,Yuan-Pei Lan

In this work, various new-observed structured CeCO 3 OH were synthesized by a self-assembly hydrothermal method , and a novel tactic to produce CeO 2- x with excellent photocatalytic activity by decomposing CeCO 3 OH in H 2 was proposed and identified. By controlling the synthetic conditions, almond-like, subglobose shape and hollow-sphere of CeCO 3 OH, 3D-broom-like of Ce 2 O 3 · 2CO 2 · nH 2 O (n = (1–2)), and sheet-like of Ce 2 (CO 3 ) 3 · 6H 2 O were synthesized. The crystal growth and formation of the cerium carbonate compounds were carefully studied using XRD , SEM and TEM. TG, thermodynamic calculation and in-situ XRD were employed to reveal the decomposition behavior of almond-like CeCO 3 OH in air, Ar and H 2 . The results show that the decomposition temperatures of CeCO 3 OH in Ar and H 2 are higher than that of in air, and suggest that Ce 2 O 3 has a low thermodynamic stability during the decomposition of CeCO 3 OH in Ar and H 2 , and Ce 3+ will be mostly oxidized by H 2 O firstly and then by both of H 2 O and CO 2 . The ceria samples obtained by decomposing from CeCO 3 OH in different atmosphere maintain indistinguishable shape and particle size. The XPS , Raman spectra and ESR results indicate that the one obtained in H 2 has the richest surface oxygen vacancies (OVs), narrowest band gap of 3.12 eV, lowest intensity in PL spectra and a significantly enhanced photodegradation ratio of methylene blue. The MB photodegradation ratio after 120 min reaction with the catalysts of CeO 2 -Air, CeO 2 -Ar and CeO 2 -H 2 is 43.14%, 54.43% and 73.41%, with a calculated reaction rate constant of 0.00539, 0.00652 and 0.01097 min -1 , respectively. The offered novel tactic of decomposing CeCO 3 OH in H 2 is an efficient and facile technique for active CeO 2- x production.

Facilely fabrication of the direct Z-scheme heterojunction of NH2-UiO-66 and CeCO3OH for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO and CH4

Yuxin Mei,Nicui Yuan,Yating Xie,Yaping Li,Baining Lin,Yonghua Zhou

NH 2 -UiO-66 is recently regarded as a potential photocatalyst for CO 2 reduction reaction due to the high CO 2 adsorption capacity, high UV–vis light absorption capacity and chemical stability. Aiming to further improve its activity, in this paper, a composite of NH 2 -UiO-66 and CeCO 3 OH (NU/CC) was fabricated via an in-situ growth method of NH 2 -UiO-66 on CeCO 3 OH. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) characterizations indicated that a direct Z-scheme heterojunction between CeCO 3 OH and NH 2 -UiO-66 was formed via the formation of O-Zr-CO 3 2- bond. The CO 2 adsorption measurement, UV–vis DRS spectra and photo(electro)chemical measurements indicated that the optimal composite NU/CC-1.6–90 exhibited the higher CO 2 adsorption capacity, stronger respond and wider absorption range to UV–vis light, as well as the significantly delayed recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, compared with other control samples. As a result, NU/CC-1.6–90 delivered the obviously enhanced photocatalytic activity of CO 2 to both CO and CH 4 , and the rate of electron consumption reached 152.8 μmol/g h, 5-fold of that of NH 2 -UiO-66.

Facile synthesis of a novel CeCO3OH@(H/C–CdS) catalyst with synergistic effect of heterophase junction and heterojunction for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation efficiency at room temperature

Xiaoyu Wang,Mengchao Feng,Rui Cao,Yuchang Wang,Kai Ma,Jianbin Zhang

A new CeCO 3 OH@(hexagonal/cubic phases–CdS) (CeCO 3 OH@(H/C–CdS)) composite catalyst was facilely synthesized by a simple microinjection titration–stirring method, in which CdS nanoparticles were dispersed on the surface of CeCO 3 OH nanolines. The optimal conditions for the preparation of composite catalysts with high photocatalytic performance were determined by single-factor experiments and response surface experiments. Under these conditions, the degradation rate of 30 mL 2.000 g/L rhodamine B (Rh B) by CeCO 3 OH@(H/C-CdS) in a photocatalytic reaction for 1 h at 25 °C was up to 86.81 % and its degradation rate in a photocatalytic reaction for 150 min was up to 99.62 %. The degradation rate could be maintained above 80 % even after six times recycling. Especially, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 2.000 g/L Rh B on the composite catalyst under sunlight and at room temperature for 30 min reached 97.66 %. Meanwhile, the large size of CeCO 3 OH considerably alleviated the agglomeration of CdS, providing more adsorption and active sites for visible light-mediated degradation of Rh B. Importantly, the Z-scheme charge transfer realized by CdS and CeCO 3 OH enhanced the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, and successfully inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electrons with holes. At the same time, owing to the low energy band difference between the two phases of CdS, charge was transferred between the hexagonal and cubic phases, leaving more effective photogenerated charge to participate in the degradation of Rh B. The synergism of the heterophase junction and heterojunction and the presence of oxygen and sulfur vacancies considerably enhanced the degradation performance of the catalyst. Thus, this study provides a new strategy for the modification and enhanced visible-light catalysis performance of CdS-based catalysts.

Boosting activity on CoFe layered double hydroxide by doping and heterostructure as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for efficient overall water splitting

Jian Tang,Junxian Hu,Xuanli Chen,Bin Yang,Keyu Zhang,Yin Li,Yaochun Yao,Shaoze Zhang

The development of economically feasible and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen generation is highly significant. Here, the OER and HER activities on CoFe LDH are enhanced by coupling CeCO 3 OH to construct heterostructures and doping Ce atoms. The results reveal strong electronic interactions at the heterointerface, leading to the generation of abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs). Ce doping induces lattice distortion in CoFe LDH leading to a large number of defects and simultaneously leading to changes in the morphology of the layer. Benefiting from their synergistic effects, the prepared CeCO 3 OH/Ce-CoFe LDH heterostructure exhibits excellent OER and HER performance with low overpotentials of 216 mV and 165 mV at 10 mA cm −2 respectively in alkaline media. Moreover, it demonstrates robust stability (OER: 94 h at 100 mA cm −2 ) in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. When employed as both the anode and cathode catalyst, it demonstrates good stability for 77 h. This work provides a new perspective on the design of LDH-based bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting.

Tailoring the activity of NiFe layered double hydroxide with CeCO3OH as highly efficient water oxidation electrocatalyst

Jiabao Ding,Yang Han,Guo Hong

Owing to the efficient modulation of the electronic structure of nanomaterials , rare earth elements introduction as promoters into nanomaterials has attracted great attention in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This work demonstrates the cerium carbonate hydroxide (CeCO 3 OH) in situ grown on nickel foam (NF) supported NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) as a novel promoter in OER process. The hybrid material (Ni 0.75 Fe 0.15 Ce 0.10 /NF) possesses excellent performance for OER where the overpotentials at the current densities of 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 are 228 mV and 270 mV, respectively, along with the Tafel slope of 38.3 mV dec −1 . Such performance is comparable in activity to many state-of-the-art electrocatalysts . The enhanced performance in the NiFe LDH can be ascribed to the synergetic interaction between CeCO 3 OH and NiFe LDH by utilizing the advantages of cerium and carbonate in OER. The novelty of our work is the exploration of CeCO 3 OH as a promoter to enhance the OER performance, which expands the application of cerium-based compounds in energy storage and conversion .

Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance of N-Doped Ceria Prepared via Thermal Decomposition of CeCO3OH in an NH3 Atmosphere

Siqi Wu,Fan Wang,Yuanpei Lan,Lin Chen,Chaoyi Chen,Wei Zhang,Lang Liu,Arun Murali,Junqi Li

Nitrogen dopant has been shown to significantly enhance the photocatalytic performance of CeO 2 , while most current nitrogen doping preparation methods were directly derived from CeO 2 . In this work, we offer a novel and advanced approach to prepare nitrogen-rich doped ceria with excellent photocatalytic performances by a thermal decomposition of CeCO 3 OH in an NH 3 contained atmosphere. It was found that the prepared CeCO 3 OH-NH 3 sample had the highest nitrogen doping content and oxygen vacancy concentration. During the breaking of chemical bonds in CeCO 3 OH and the formation of new bonds in ceria promoted the incorporation of nitrogen dopants, both on the surface and in the bulk, and the NH 3 -containing atmosphere boosted the nitrogen doping in the ceria lattice. Moreover, CeCO 3 OH-NH 3 also exhibited a higher TC (tetracycline) photodegradation ratio (68.35%) and a higher hydrogen production rate (45.74 μmol·h -1 ·g -1 ) via hydrolysis. Radical trapping experiments confirmed that photogenerated h + and e - played key roles in TC degradation, and the possible mechanism of the photocatalytic performance enhancement in nitrogen-doped ceria was discussed. The developed nitrogen doping method for CeO 2 and the findings of this work may further benefit the high-performance ceria-based catalysts design and offer a new understanding of the nitrogen doped ceria.
