Trace Iron-Modified CeO₂-Supported Core-Shell CoO@Co Catalyst for Selective Conversion of Furfural to 1,5-Pentanediol

Shenyu Wang,Junjie Zhang,Ying Zhang

Graphical The CoO@Co core-shell catalyst, 7Co-0.2Fe/CeO 2 , efficiently catalyzes the hydrogenation and ring-opening of furfural to 1,5-pentanediol, with a high productivity of 54.76 mmol/g Co /h, representing the top activity level among the reported catalysts. The addition of Fe optimizes the Co 2+ /Co 0 ratio, improves substrate adsorption, and prevents the formation of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, a saturated furan byproduct. In the conversion of furfural using non-noble metal catalysts, preferential cleavage of the C2−O bond followed by hydrogenation of the C=C bond facilitates selective access to valuable 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PeD). Herein, we developed CeO₂ loaded core-shell CoO@Co nanoparticle catalysts. Adjusting Co loading, Fe doping, and reduction temperature improved reaction efficiency. 7Co-0.2Fe/CeO₂ catalysts reduced at 500 °C demonstrated optimal performance. 1,5-PeD produced at 54.76 mmol/g Co /h, representing the top activity levels among the reported catalysts. H₂-TPR, XRD, HAADF-STEM, FT-IR, XPS, and XANES were employed to investigate the catalyst structure-activity relationship. Co 2+ cleaves furan ring C−O bond, Co⁰ promotes double-bond hydrogenation. The CoO@Co structure favors the desired 1,5-PeD production route. Trace Fe species optimize the Co 2+ /Co⁰ ratio, enhance the substrate adsorption, and inhibit the furan ring saturation. These findings emphasize the importance of fine-tuning catalyst structure and composition for selectivity improvement.

MOF-derived Co/CeO₂@GC for activation of peroxomonosulfate for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Shenghui Tu,Peng Zhou,Mingming Dong,Wenbin Wu,Lu Sun

In this study, an efficient and magnetic Co/CeO₂@GC catalyst was synthesized by calcination using Co@Ce-MOF as precursor. The effects of different catalyst dosages, tetracycline (TC) concentrations, pH values, peroxomonosulfate (PMS) concentrations, temperatures, and coexisting anions on the catalytic performance were investigated. Under the conditions of 20 mg catalyst and 20 mg PMS, the degradation rate of 100 mL of 40 mg/L tetracycline could reach 95.7%. The catalyst maintained effective PMS activation across a broad pH range (5-11), retaining 79.2% activity after four consecutive cycles. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and radical quenching experiments confirmed the coexistence of both radical pathways and non-radical pathways in the system, with the latter identified as the dominant contributor to the degradation process. Reaction pathway analysis via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry further elucidated TC transformation mechanisms under these oxidative conditions. This work proposed a MOF-derived materials as an efficient PMS activator for a simple method of TC degradation.

Total antioxidant capacity assessment and accurate quantification of ascorbic acid and glutathione utilizing the enhanced multi-mimetic of Cu-CeO₂ NPs decorated PCN-224

Yani Liu,Haoyu Chen,Lin Chai,Jing Liu,Shu Huang,Feng Liu,Xiaohua Zhu,Youyu Zhang,Meiling Liu,Shouzhuo Yao

The emergence of various nanozymes has revolutionized approaches to detecting total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in food and biological samples; however, the precise quantification of specific antioxidant species such as ascorbic acid (AA) and glutathione (GSH) continue to present significant challenges. Inspired by the functional characteristics of oxidoreductases, we have developed Cu-CeO₂ nanoparticles adorned PCN-224, which exhibit multiple mimetic behaviors, including oxidase (OXD), ascorbate oxidase (AAO), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like activities. This innovative PCN-224@Cu-CeO 2 is designed for the quantitative evaluation of TAC in food, pharmaceuticals, and biological samples. Simultaneously, it enables the accurate determination of AA and GSH levels with favorable selectivity. The integration of nanozymes onto metal-organic frameworks significantly enhances both stability and catalytic efficiency. Furthermore, utilizing the multi-mimetics activity of the same materials simplifies the biosensing processes for TAC and individual antioxidants in tablets, beverages, fruits, and cells, thereby considerably diminishing experimental intricacy. Our findings not only advance the development and applications of novel nanozymes with exceptional multi-mimetic properties but also tackle selectivity challenges associated with colorimetric detection platforms that rely on oxidase and peroxidase activities.

Downregulation of TET2 Contributes to Nasal Polypogenesis Through Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1α-Mediated Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition

Kunyu Liu,Yu Xu

Objectives. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) and Tet methylcytosine dioxygenase 2 (TET2) have been reported to mediate nasal polypogenesis through the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Additionally, HIF1α can regulate the expression and function of TET2. However, the precise mechanism of how TET2 regulates the EMT through HIF1α mediation in nasal epithelial cells is still poorly understood. Methods. Nasal tissue samples were collected from patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP), and controls. The expression of HIF1α and TET2 was detected using Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. EMT markers (E-cadherin and vimentin) were also evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Primary human nasal epithelial cells (hNECs) were stimulated with CoCl 2 to mimic hypoxia. Vitamin C (VC), a TET2 non-specific activator, and small interfering RNA (siRNA) transfection of TET2 were used to further determine the role of TET2 in hypoxia-induced EMT. Finally, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Nrf2 were measured to explore the downstream consequences of TET2 in hypoxic hNECs. Results. TET2 levels were lower in the nasal epithelium of CRSwNP patients and were positively correlated with E-cadherin but negatively correlated with vimentin in CRS. However, HIF1α exhibited the opposite pattern and was negatively correlated with TET2 expression. CoCl 2 -simulated hypoxia led to EMT and increased HIF1α in hNECs in vitro , with simultaneous downregulation of TET2 expression. Addition of VC activated TET2 expression in hNECs, but inhibited EMT and HIF1α expression. Furthermore, siRNA knockdown of TET2 contributed to the EMT in CoCl 2 -simulated hNECs despite the addition of VC. Finally, TET2 regulated the EMT in hypoxic hNECs through Nrf2 expression and ROS generation. Conclusion. TET2 was negatively correlated with HIF1α and EMT in vivo . TET2 was downregulated by HIF1α, resulting in the EMT in CoCl 2 -hypoxic hNECs via regulation of oxidative stress in vitro . Hence, TET2 might provide a new therapeutic approach for CRSwNP

Erythropoietin protects outer blood-retinal barrier in experimental diabetic retinopathy by up-regulating ZO-1 and occludin

Chaoyang Zhang,Hai Xie,Qian Yang,Yiting Yang,Weiye Li,Haibin Tian,Lixia Lu,Fang Wang,Jing-Ying Xu,Furong Gao,Juan Wang,Caixia Jin,Guoxu Xu,Guo-Tong Xu,Jingfa Zhang

Purpose To explore the mechanisms of erythropoietin (EPO) in maintaining outer blood-retinal barrier (BRB) in diabetic rats. Methods Sprague-Dawley rats were rendered diabetic with intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin, and then followed by intravitreal injection of EPO. Two and four weeks later, the permeability of outer BRB was examined with FITC-dextran leakage assay, following a method to demarcate the inner and outer retina based on retinal blood supply. The glyoxal-treated ARPE-19 cells, incubated with EPO, soluble EPO receptor (sEPOR), Gö6976, or digoxin, were studied for cell viability and barrier function. The expressions of ZO-1, occludin, VEGFR2, HIF-1α, MAPKs, and AKT were examined with Western blot and immunofluorescence. Results The major Leakage of FITC-dextran was detected in the outer nuclear layer in both 2- and 4-week diabetic rats. The leakage was largely ameliorated in EPO-treated diabetic rats. The protein expressions of ZO-1 and occludin in the RPE-Bruch's membrane choriocapillaris complex were significantly decreased, whereas HIF-1α and JNK pathways were activated, in 4-week diabetic rats. These changes were prevented by EPO treatment. The in vitro study with ARPE-19 cells confirmed these changes, and the protective effect of EPO was abolished by sEPOR. Gö6976 and digoxin rescued the tight junction and barrier function in glyoxal-treated ARPE-19 cells. Conclusions In early diabetic rats, the outer BRB might be more severely damaged and its breakdown is the major factor for retinal oedema. EPO maintains the outer BRB integrity through down-regulation of HIF-1α and JNK signallings, and thus up-regulating ZO-1 and occludin expressions in RPE cells.

Proton conductivity and durability of Ce-based hybrid proton exchange membranes synchronously enhanced by dual-function γ-AlOOH@Ti-supported CeO2 composite oxide

Hongsheng Liu,Hengyue Li,Bin Huang,Yange Yang,Haibo Guo,Yan Xiao,Weiguang Yang

To enhance the proton conductivity and durability of Ce-based hybrid proton exchange membranes (PEMs), this study fabricates modified perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) hybrid membranes by incorporating the dual-function γ-AlOOH@Ti-supported CeO 2 composite oxide (γ-AlOOH@Ti/CeO 2 ). In addition to combining the inherent proton conductivity of γ-AlOOH with the excellent radical scavenging ability of CeO 2 , both the proton conductivity and durability of Ce-based PEMs are further improved by introducing Ti-dopant, which not only increases hydrogen vacancies on the surface of γ-AlOOH, which facilitate proton conduction, and induces electron transfer from γ-AlOOH@Ti to CeO 2 , which enhance free radical adsorption. As results shown, the proton conductivity and the fluoride release value of the resulting hybrid membrane are about 76 % higher and 35.25 % lower than those of the PFSA-CeO 2 membrane, respectively. Moreover, the performance of cells shows that, after accelerated degradation testing, the PFSA-γ-AlOOH@Ti/CeO 2 membrane exhibits the lowest peak power density decrease rate, the impedance increase rate and hydrogen crossover current density, with 11.79 %, 27.54 % and 3.04 mA cm −2 , respectively. These results suggest that compared to CeO 2 -hybrid PEMs, γ-AlOOH@Ti/CeO 2 -based hybrid PEMs exhibit higher proton conductivity and superior chemical stability, indicating the potential application of γ-AlOOH@Ti/CeO 2 -based hybrid PEMs in proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Effect of high-activity Co/CeO₂@C on hydrogen storage kinetics of MgH2

Haotian Yu,Zeming Yuan,Qiang Han,Jiaxin Li,Tao Li

Magnesium hydride (MgH₂) is a promising solid-state hydrogen storage material for large-scale applications, owing to its high gravimetric capacity and natural abundance. However, its practical implementation is hindered by high thermodynamic stability and sluggish kinetics, originating from strong Mg–H bonds and limited hydrogen diffusion, which typically require elevated temperatures and prolonged cycling. Moreover, existing catalytic systems frequently suffer from inadequate dispersion, interfacial instability during cycling, and a lack of quantitative understanding of the cooperative effects between oxygen vacancies and multivalent Ce. To address these issues, a Co/CeO₂@C composite catalyst was synthesized through a hydrothermal–calcination method and incorporated into MgH₂ via ball milling. The microstructural characteristics, hydrogen storage properties, and underlying reaction mechanisms were systematically investigated using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Pressure-Composition-Temperature (PCT) tests and Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov (JMAK) kinetic fitting. Evaluation based on microstructure, hydrogen uptake/release capacities at varying doping levels, and corresponding activation energies revealed that the composite with 6   wt.% Co/CeO₂@C exhibited a hydrogen uptake of 5.74   wt.%. At 300 °C, the 6   wt.% composite released 5.15   wt.% H₂ within 100   min, demonstrating its superior dehydrogenation performance at this doping level. The activation energy decreased from 145.43   kJ·mol⁻¹ to 93.35   kJ·mol⁻¹, and the thickness loss due to interfacial degradation was less than 1   nm. This enhancement is ascribed to a triple synergistic mechanism of “hydrogen spillover–electron transfer–confinement stabilization”. Co offers active sites for hydrogen dissociation, oxygen vacancies in CeO₂ promote hydrogen diffusion, and the carbon matrix suppresses particle agglomeration. This study contributes to quantitatively understanding the synergy between oxygen vacancies and multivalent Ce, establishes a clear “microstructure–catalytic mechanism–macro-performance” correlation, and offers new insights for the practical deployment of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials. It is noted, however, that the key findings presented herein align closely with trends reported in prior literature, highlighting the consistent performance landscape observed for this class of catalytic modifiers.

MWCNTs/CeO²-NRs-Functionalized WaveFlex Biosensor for Alkaline Phosphatase Detection in Agricultural Food Crops

Shuai Wang,Fei Liu,Ragini Singh,Bingyuan Zhang,Santosh Kumar

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a phosphomonoesterase used to hydrolyze biologically active molecules containing phosphate ester groups. Many tissues, such as bone, liver, and kidney, contain ALP; 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) inhibits the reaction of ALP with phenyl phosphate. Based on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon, a WaveFlex biosensor is designed and manufactured using multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/cerium dioxide nanorods (CeO2-NRs)-immobilized multitapered fiber for detecting pesticide residues. Specifically, first, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are attached to the surface of the sensing region of the probe, which effectively stimulates the LSPR phenomenon. Second, MWCNTs and CeO2-NRs are fixed to the surface of the sensing region of the probe, and finally, ALP is uniformly used at a concentration of 300 IU/L. In this experiment, the authors tested the stability, repeatability, pH effect, and selectivity of the biosensor and found that it exhibits high sensitivity, good stability, and strong usability in the linear range of 0–8 mg/L, meeting the requirements for pesticide residue detection in agricultural food crops.

Development of Active Antibacterial CEO/CS@PLA Nonwovens and the Application on Food Preservation

Hui Sun,Bingbing Wang,Youxiu Xie,Fengchun Li,Tao Xu,Bin Yu

The biodegradable activity antibacterial materials have been widely applied on food preservation because they not only protect foods from pathogenic attacks but also relieve environmental pollution. Biodegradable melt-blown nonwovens (MB) have several advantages over the other materials in terms of a simpler and more environmentally friendly fabrication process, higher specific surface area, and lower cost. Herein, polylactic acid (PLA) MB is first modified by polydopamine (PDA) to activate the surface. Then, chitosan (CS) and cinnamon essential oil (CEO) are used to decorate the surface of the modified PLA MB via a simple one-pot method to prepare CEO/CS@PLA MB with different CEO contents. Compared with PLA MB, CEO/CS@PLA MB had a rougher surface and larger average fiber diameter, while the average pore diameter and air permeability reduced. The input of CEO led to a decrease in the tensile strength of CEO/CS@PLA MB and an obvious increase in the elongation at break. The combination of CS and CEO shows excellent synergistic antibacterial effect. The antibacterial efficiencies of CEO/CS@PLA MB against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus enhance with the increase of the CEO content. When the weight ratio of CS to CEO is 1:2, the antibacterial efficiencies of CEO2/CS@PLA MB against E. coli and S. aureus are 99.98 and 99.99%, respectively. When being applied to the preservation of fresh strawberry, CEO2/CS@PLA MB can effectively inhibit the microbial growth in strawberry and reduce decay, which extends the shelf time of strawberry.

Improved cycling performance of CeO2-inlaid Li-rich cathode materials for lithium-ion battery

Guorong Hu,Zhichen Xue,Zhongyuan Luo,Zhongdong Peng,Yanbing Cao,Weigang Wang,Yuexi Zeng,Yong Huang,Yong Tao,Tianfan Li,Zhiyong Zhang,Ke Du

The Li-rich cathode material for long cycle performance and long-term storage performance is a challenge for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to the rapid capacity degradation over cycling and the formation of residual lithium on the surface during long-term storage. Herein, an elevated performance of Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 materials via CeO 2 inlay is reported, which was prepared from Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 by sol-gel inlay with CeO 2 . It was proved by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy that cerium oxide cladding not only covered the surface of the material but also diffused into the interior of the material change crystal structure. Cerium oxide on the cladding not only reduces the material's contact with water and carbon dioxide in the air, but also prevents the material from being corroded by electrolyte during electrochemical test. The position of the transition metal atom is replaced Ce atoms, which increases the unit cell volume and the stability of the Li-rich material during the cycling. The results show that the storage property and the electrochemical cycling property of the material have been improved obviously. The CeO 2 inlaid lithium rich material discharged 204.6 mAh/g for the first time at the current of 1C, and 164.4 mAh/g after 150 charge and discharge cycles with corresponding capacity retention rate of 80.35%, compared with the retention rate of 57.26% for pristine Li-rich material capacity. After being stored in humid air for 40 days, the CeO 2 inlaid lithium-rich material showed better electrochemical performance than the pristine one. It is powerfully demonstrated that the CeO 2 inlay strategy here holds huge promise for surface modification of electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Fluorinated Porous CeO₂ with Enriched Oxygen Vacancies as Dual-Functional Fillers for Durable Corrosion Protection

Zheng Weiping,Xia Wenjun,Li Kangyuan,Wang Jingting,Hao Lifeng

A dual-interface engineering strategy is proposed to exploit the anticorrosion potential of cerium oxide fillers by combining an oxygen-vacancy-rich porous core with a fluorinated superhydrophobic shell. Porous CeO 2 (P-CeO 2 ) is synthesized via a P123-templated hydrothermal process and then functionalized with perfluoroalkyl silane to form fluorinated porous CeO 2 (F-CeO 2 ). Conventional CeO 2 , P-CeO 2 , and F-CeO 2 are dispersed into a fluorocarbon resin to prepare composite coatings at different filler loadings. Characterization confirms that fluorination preserves the mesoporous fluorite framework while converting the surface from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic (water contact angle 164°) and promoting an oxygen‑vacancy-enriched surface character. The fluorinated porous particles also show improved colloidal stability in xylene, enabling homogeneous dispersion in the coating matrix. Electrochemical tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl identify 1.0 wt.% F-CeO 2 as the optimal formulation: The corrosion current density decreases from 5.226 μA·cm −2 for the neat resin to 0.00353 μA·cm −2 , corresponding to 99.93% inhibition efficiency and exceeding coatings with conventional CeO 2 (91.50%) or P-CeO 2 (94.03%). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that this coating maintains near-ideal capacitive behavior over 21 days of immersion, with coating and double-layer constant-phase exponents remaining ~ 0.92-1.00; a diffusion-controlled Warburg element emerges only after prolonged exposure, indicating delayed electrolyte access to the metal/coating interface. AFM and XRD support a synergistic mechanism in which the fluorinated shell suppresses wetting and ion ingress, while the oxygen-vacancy-rich porous core promotes active passivation. Here, the “dual-functional” design refers to the integration of a superhydrophobic physical barrier provided by the fluorinated shell and a chemical passivation effect induced by oxygen vacancies in the CeO 2 core, which operate synergistically to enhance corrosion resistance. This dual-interface design makes F-CeO 2 an efficient bifunctional filler for durable anticorrosion fluorocarbon coatings. Overall, the approach improves barrier integrity, durability under chloride attack.

Metallic Ag⁰-induced electron transfer at Ag-CeO₂ Interface: The key to efficient CO oxidation

Richuan Rao,Hao Zhang,Qiang Ling,Xiongzi Dong,Song Fang,Mingyue Zheng,Tao Wang,Binghui Wang,Chunming Hu

Interfacial Ag° content of Ag-CeO 2 catalysts was modulated by pyrolysis temperature. • Rich Ag 0 catalysts had higher catalytic ability than those rich in Ce 3+ and defects. • Temperature triggered electron transfer of Ag 0 to carbonate-activated CeO 2 interface. • Dynamic evolution of Ag-CeO 2 interface determined catalytic capacity of its catalyst. Ag-CeO 2 catalysts were fabricated with an agar-assisted pyrolysis method and their interfacial structures were tuned to investigate their role in CO oxidation. The catalysts mainly consisted of irregular CeO 2 nanoparticles with abundant metallic Ag 0 , Ce 3+ and oxygen vacancies at the interface. As the pyrolysis temperature increased, the metallic Ag⁰ content decreased while Ag⁺ and Ce³⁺ species increased. Using CO oxidation as a probe reaction, catalytic evaluation confirmed that the activity was positively correlated with the interfacial metallic Ag⁰ content, whereas no direct positive correlation was observed with Ag⁺, Ce³⁺, or oxygen vacancies alone-suggesting a dominant role of Ag⁰, although a possible synergistic contribution from Ce³⁺/oxygen vacancies is not ruled out. Ag-CeO 2 catalysts after CO adsorption were monitored by XPS and in situ FT-IR for identifying the dynamic evolution of Ag-CeO 2 interface. The reaction temperature was revealed to trigger electron transfer from metallic Ag⁰ to the carbonate-bound CeO₂ interface, which simultaneously converted initially formed polydentate and bidentate carbonates into bridging and monodentate intermediates. The reversible redox transformation (Ag⁰ + Ce⁴⁺ ⇌ Ag⁺ + Ce³⁺) at the interface of these catalysts further corroborated the essential role of Ag⁰ in enhancing the catalytic activities for CO oxidation. These findings, obtained with CO oxidation as a model reaction, differ from the simple traditional correlations with oxygen vacancies or Ce³⁺ concentration, offering a molecular-level blueprint for designing highly active and stable CeO₂-supported catalysts for catalytic oxidation reactions.
