Intelligent sensing platform based on europium-doped carbon dots for dual-functional detection of ciprofloxacin/Ga3+ and its tracking in vivo

Le Liang,Su-qian Cai,Yan-li Leng,Chan Huang,Yong-qing Liu,Ye Wang,Li Luo,Mei Han,Xiao-hong Li,Xiao-hua Cai

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and gallium (Ga) are widely used in many fields and their excessive presences will pose serious threats to the environment and life health. Therefore, developing an intelligent detection method for rapidly tracking and determination of CIP and Ga 3 ⁺ concentration in environments and organisms is of great significance. In this work, a europium-doped carbon dots (Eu-CDs) with unique structure and performances was prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method. Eu-CDs can efficiently overcome the problem of aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching in complex environments to track CIP and Ga 3⁺ with highly sensitivity. The "antenna effect" of non-radiative energy transfer is introduced to explain the pathway on fluorescence transition of Eu-CDs through DFT theoretical calculations and mechanism investigations, which provide a theoretical basis for the design and development of novel carbon dots with specific functions. Eu-CDs can successfully be applied to fluorescence imaging in organisms, moreover, it also exhibits excellent application potentials in the field of anti-tumor and antibacterial. In addition, a portable intelligent detection platform based on Eu-CDs-hydrogel device have been developed, which provides a new strategy for rapidly detection of CIP and Ga 3⁺ in real samples.

(MoS4)2− intercalated CAMoS4⋅LDH material for the efficient and facile sequestration of antibiotics from aqueous solution

Kiran Gupta,Jiang-Bo Huo,Jia-Cheng E. Yang,Ming-Lai Fu,Baoling Yuan,Zhangxu Chen

We introduced (MoS 4 ) 2− moiety into the lamellar layers of Ca 0.66 Al 0.34 (OH) 2 (NO 3 ) 0.34 ⋅yH 2 O to fabricate Ca 0.66 Al 0.34 (OH) 2 (MoS 4 ) 0.17 ⋅yH 2 O (CA-MoS 4 ⋅LDH), a stable and efficient adsorbent for removal of two envoy Fluoroquinolones (FQs), Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Ofloxacin (OFL), from contaminated aquatic sources. Various characterization tools, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric analyses etc. were applied to confirm structural and compositional changes during the synthesis and adsorption properties of CA-MoS 4 ⋅LDH. The efficiency of adsorbent was investigated by evaluating different parameters including contact time, pH of solution, initial concentration of pollutant, and effect of temperature. By using CA-MoS 4 ⋅LDH as adsorbent, we found more efficient removal of CIP than that of OFL due to the steric hindrance. The highest uptake of 707.20 mg/g and 476.74 mg/g of CIP and OFL, respectively, was found at pH of 6 with improved kinetics and easily reusability for these representative antibiotics models so far. Removal kinetics of both FQs were found to better follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model than the pseudo-first-order. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was employed to understand the removal process, suggesting monolayer chemisorption mechanism. The adsorbate-adsorbent interaction revealed remarkable features originate from the combination of weak hydrogen bond interaction between thio group and NH 2 + group of antibiotic and electrostatic interaction between positive LDH layer and COO − group of antibiotic as well, and anion exchange mechanisms, which were also confirmed by XRD, FTIR, XPS and Raman spectrum etc. obtained after adsorption. It is proposed that all (MoS 4 ) 2− moiety offers stability to the CA-MoS 4 ⋅LDH structure to avoid its solubility under ambient environments.

A Removable Artificial Cell Wall for Withstanding Ciprofloxacin

Hanjiao Hu,Xingtang Liang,Shuangshuang Wang,Zhijun Xu,Junbo Li,Haixu Chen,Dongyue Su,Yanzhen Yin,Zuqiang Huang,Xin Huang

The pollution of antibiotics in aquaculture environment is increasingly serious, and excessive antibiotics will kill the probiotics in aquaculture feed. How to improve the viability of probiotics in the antibiotics-contaminated environment is of significance. In this study, a new strategy for protecting Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells in situ against antibiotics is constructed based on cell surface engineering technology by putting on wearable protective layers for cells. The protective layer is constructed around cellular surface via the self-assembly of coacervate microdroplets that consist of carboxymethyl chitosan and carboxyl dextran. Without affecting the cell viability, the protective layer can grasp ciprofloxacin and decrease the contact of ciprofloxacin to cells and consequently improve the survival rate of cells when exposing to ciprofloxacin. This work highlights a facile strategy to establish removable artificial cell wall by biodegradable polysaccharides for improving the productivity of probiotics in antibiotic environments.

Competitive adsorption of antibiotic tetracycline and ciprofloxacin on montmorillonite

Mi Wu,Shifeng Zhao,Ruisen Jing,Yifei Shao,Xijuan Liu,Fengzhu Lv,Xinxin Hu,Qian Zhang,Zilin Meng,Aiju Liu

As antibiotics continue to be released into soils, it poses a potential threat to human and animal health. The migration-transformation of contaminants in soils is strongly affected by adsorption on clay. Tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) which are extensively used have been attracted attention recently. Based on adsorption kinetics, isotherm, FT-IR, XRD and molecular simulation, the intercalation and environmental behavior of TC or CIP by montmorillonite (Mt) as single or mixed substance were studied and the adsorption mechanism was also proved. In the mixed system, the relationship between TC and CIP was a competition, but no preferential adsorption. The interaction between antibiotics in interlayer and the adsorption energies were simulated and calculated by molecular simulation to reveal the experimental results.

Heterogeneous catalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin with FeS micro-flakes

Shaoming Zeng,Xiaofang Lai,Hai Li,Rongtao Ji,Duan Zhao,Jikang Jian

The common water contaminant ciprofloxacin (CIP) poses a significant threat to the health of both aquatic species and humans. Current iron-sulfide-based catalysts, predominantly nanoparticles, face limitations including aqueous instability, narrow pH adaptability, and agglomeration. To overcome these bottlenecks, we developed a new iron-sulfide-based catalyst. This study used FeS micro-flakes to degrade CIP. The degradation efficiency and reusability of FeS micro-flakes were evaluated under different conditions. The results indicate that FeS micro-flakes can achieve a removal efficiency of over 99 % within 10 min at pH 6, a temperature of 30 °C, a FeS dosage of 0.8 g/L, and an H 2 O 2 concentration of 10 mmol/L. even after five cycles, the removal efficiency of FeS remained above 99 %. The hydroxyl radical (HO·) was identified as the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) by chemical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). These results demonstrate the exceptional performance and reusability of the FeS heterogeneous Fenton catalyst

Enhanced Electro-Fenton Degradation of Ciprofloxacin by Membrane Aeration

Keda Zhi,Chao Yang,Yu Zheng,Runnan Zhang,Omojayogbe Toyosi E,Hong Wu,Zhongyi Jiang

Electro-Fenton is a widely used electrochemical advanced oxidation process for the treatment of refractory organic pollutants, in which O2 input is required to generate hydrogen peroxide. The aeration mode directly affects the dissolution and stability of O2 bubbles in the solution, thus the rate of degradation. Herein, membrane aeration was introduced to the electro-Fenton degradation of ciprofloxacin in which O2 was dispersed into the liquid phase in the form of microbubbles through the ceramic membrane. Microbubbles can greatly improve the gas–liquid mass transfer efficiency of unit volume O2 to obtain an ultrahigh concentration of dissolved O2 up to 46 mg/L, thus improving the reaction rate. The effects of aeration mode, applied current, membrane aperture, aeration rate, and ciprofloxacin concentration on degradation rate were studied. Compared with the conventional electro-Fenton process using plastic pipe aeration, the membrane aeration-enhanced electro-Fenton (MAEF) system achieved a significant improvement in the degradation rate, and the reaction time required to achieve a 97% degradation ratio was remarkably reduced from 4 h to 10 min. Membrane aeration is an efficient approach to facilitating heterogeneous catalysis reactions involving the gas phase.

Enhancement of ciprofloxacin sorption on chitosan/biochar hydrogel beads

Muhammad Zaheer Afzal,Xue-Fei Sun,Jun Liu,Chao Song,Shu-Guang Wang,Asif Javed

Biochar is effective in water treatment but it is hard to retrieve or separate biochar powder from aqueous solutions. In this study, the removal of ciprofloxacin from aqueous solutions was investigated using chitosan/biochar hydrogel beads (CBHB). The results showed that the adsorption rate was almost independent of the temperature and occurred at the homogeneous sites of adsorbent thus obeying the Langmuir model. The equilibrium time was varying for different initial concentrations and found to be 48 h for maximum one. The maximum sorption was found to be >76 mg/g of adsorbent out of 160 mg/L as initial concentration. Adsorption obeyed the second-order mechanism with leading role of intra-particle diffusion and outer diffusion. Adsorption capacity decreased from 34.90 mg/g to 15.77 mg/g in the presence of 0.01 N Na 3 PO 4 whereas other electrolytes such as NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 , NaNO 3 with same concentration did not affect the sorption capacity. However, increased concentration of NaCl reduced the sorption capacity to some extent. CBHB showed a mixed mechanism by removing CIP through π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction, hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction. The reformation of CBHB with methanol and ethanol instead of water decreased its sorption capacity to 32.69 mg/g and 29.29 mg/g. Adsorption decreased by little after every regeneration of CBHB and was still >64 ± 0.68% (25.73 mg/g) after 6th regeneration. The efficacy of CBHB for CIP removal proved that CBHB is an economical and sustainable adsorbent.

Metabonomics analysis of microalga Scenedesmus obliquus under ciprofloxacin stress

Yue Wang,Weihao Ning,Shengnan Li,Changfei Gao,Rong Cui,Wanqian Guo,Jo-Shu Chang,Shih-Hsin Ho

The wide use of antibiotics in aquaculture has triggered global ecological security issue. Microalgal bioremediation is a promising strategy for antibiotics elimination due to carbon recovery, detoxification and various ecological advantages. However, a lack of understanding with respect to the corresponding regulation mechanism towards antibiotic stress may limit its practical applicability. The microalga Scenedesmus obliquus was shown to be capable of effectively eliminating ciprofloxacin (CIP), which is a common antibiotic used in aquaculture. However, the corresponding transcriptional alterations require further investigation and verification at the metabolomic level. Thus, this study uncovered the metabolomic profiles and detailed toxic and defense mechanisms towards CIP in S. obliquus using untargeted metabolomics. The enhanced oligosaccharide/polyol/lipid transport, up-regulation of carbohydrate and arachidonic acid metabolic pathways and increased energy production via EMP metabolism were observed as defense mechanisms of microalgal cells to xenobiotic CIP. The toxic metabolic responses included: (1) down-regulation of parts of mineral and organic transporters; (2) electrons competition between antibiotic and NAD during intracellular CIP degradation; and (3) suppressed expression of the hem gene in chlorophyll biosynthesis. This study describes the metabolic profile of microalgae during CIP elimination and reveals the key pathways from the perspective of metabolism, thereby providing information on the precise regulation of antibiotic bioremediation via microalgae.

Removal of ciprofloxacin via enhancing hydrophilicity of membranes using biochar

Afzal Muhammad Zaheer,Khan Said Akbar,Song Chao,Irfan Muhammad Imran,Wang Shu-Guang

Growing concerns regarding the presence of pharmaceuticals in wastewater necessitate their removal. Membrane filtration offers a promising approach. This study explores the development of biochar incorporated mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for ciprofloxacin removal from water. Biochar, derived from the pyrolysis of agricultural waste, was blended with polyether sulfone (PES) and polyvinylpyrrolidone in varying ratios. The resulting MMMs exhibited progressively improved properties with increasing biochar content. Notably, membrane M 11 , comprising equal parts PES and biochar, displayed the highest porosity, lowest surface roughness (12.0), and lowest contact angle (31.05°), indicating enhanced hydrophilicity (increased by 58.19% compared to the biochar-free membrane). M 11 effectively removed ciprofloxacin along with three additional antibiotics from different classes. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses corroborated the removal of ciprofloxacin. Furthermore, M 11 demonstrated excellent regenerability, retaining over 57% removal efficiency after four cycles. These findings highlight the potential of M 11 as a sustainable and cost-effective membrane for pharmaceutical removal from wastewater.

Enhancement of photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin via constructing conductive matrix

Shi-Ming Niu,Xin-Hui Li,Hao-Yang Ding,Wo-Long Wang,Peng-Fei Li,Xia-Chen Zheng,Min-Hua Cui

The application of heterogeneous photocatalysts is severely limited by the high charge transfer resistance (R ct ). BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts were prepared and loaded on the conductive matrix material carbon paper (CP) to reduce electron transfer resistance and improve the photocatalytic performance. The R ct of BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 @CP was remarkedly reduced by 94.3 % compared to the photocatalysts on the oil paper (BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 @OP), while the photocurrent density increased by 5.5 times. The utilization efficiency of light energy and separation of photoelectrons and holes were improved with CP due to its ability to facilitate long-distance transfer of photoelectrons. Consequently, the photocatalytic degradation performance of BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 @CP was enhanced by a 26.1 % improvement in ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation efficiency. Quenching experiment, LC-MS analysis and DFT calculation revealed that piperazine ring opening and C-F cleavage were the major pathways for CIP degradation with BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 @CP.

Adsorption characteristics of ciprofloxacin onto g-MoS2 coated biochar nanocomposites

Yang Zhenyu,Xing Rong,Zhou Wenjun,Zhu Lizhong

The g-MoS 2 coated biochar (g-MoS 2 -BC) composites were synthesized by coating original biochar with g-MoS 2 nanosheets at 300°C(BC300)/700°C (BC700). The adsorption properties of the g-MoS 2 -BC composites for ciprofloxacin (CIP) were investigated with an aim to exploit its high efficiency toward soil amendment. The specific surface area and the pore structures of biochar coated g-MoS 2 nanosheets were significantly increased. The g-MoS 2 -BC composites provided more it electrons, which was favorable in enhancing the it-it electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions between CIP and biochar. As a result, the g-MoS 2 -BC composites showed faster adsorption rate and greater adsorption capacity for CIP than the original biochar. The coated g-MoS 2 nanosheets contributed more to CIP adsorption on the g-MoS 2 -BC composites due to their greater CIP adsorption capacity than the original biochar. Moreover, the synergistic effect was observed for CIP adsorption on g-MoS 2 -BC700, and suppression effect on g-MoS 2 -BC300. In addition, the adsorption of CIP onto g-MoS 2 -BC composites also exhibited strong dependence on the solution pH, since it can affect both the adsorbent surface charge and the speciation of contaminants. It was reasonably suggested that the mechanisms of CIP adsorption on g-MoS 2 -BC composites involved pore-filling effects, it-it EDA interaction, electrostatic interaction, and ion exchange interaction. These results are useful for the modification of biochar in exploiting the novel amendment for contaminated soils.

Haonan Chi,Pan Cao,Qi Shi,Chaoyu Song,Yuguang Lv,Tai Peng

This study synthesized graphene oxide (GO)/zinc oxide (ZnO)/silver (Ag) composite materials and investigated their photocatalytic degradation performance for ciprofloxacin (CIP) under visible light irradiation. GO/ZnO/Ag composites with different ratios were prepared via an impregnation and chemical reduction method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrated that under optimal conditions (20 mg/L CIP concentration, 15 mg catalyst dosage, GO/ZnO-3%/Ag-doping ratio, and pH 5), the GO/ZnO/Ag composite exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, achieving a maximum degradation rate of 82.13%. This catalyst effectively degraded ciprofloxacin under light irradiation, showing promising potential for water purification applications.
