Experimental and DFT studies on catalytic reforming of acetic acid for hydrogen production over B-doped Co/Al2O3 catalysts

Pan Li,Xinbao Li,Ye Yuan,Yang Wang,Pengfei Shen,Xinbo Zhu,Yingying Zhu

Steam reforming of bio-oil for hydrogen production is a promising green technology. Acetic acid was used as the bio-oil model compound. Experimental and density functional theory calculations were carried out to study the performance of Co/Al 2 O 3 catalysts doped with boron (B) with a 1 wt.%–5 wt.% content. Catalyst characterization by BET, XRD , XPS , NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, TEM, and TG-DTG was performed. We found that the catalyst performance improved significantly by B doping. Under the reaction conditions of T  = 500 °C, steam-to-carbon ratio (S/C) = 5, and liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) = 4.3 h −1 , the catalyst with a B doping ratio of 1 wt.% had the highest hydrogen yield of 85% and a maximum acetic acid conversion rate of 95%. The corresponding hydrogen productivity was 0.8 mmol/min. The stability of this catalyst exceeded 29 h. Density functional theory calculations showed that the interactions between the reaction intermediates and the surface were strengthened with B addition.

Performance of a Ni-Cu-Co/Al2O3 Catalyst on in-situ Hydrodeoxygenation of Bio-derived Phenol

Huiyuan Xue,Jingjing Xu,Xingxing Gong,Rongrong Hu

The in-situ hydrodeoxygenation of bio-derived phenol is an attractive routine for upgrading bio-oils. Herein, an active trimetallic Ni-Cu-Co/Al2O3catalyst was prepared and applied in the in-situ hydrodeoxygenation of bio-derived phenol. Comparison with the monometallic Ni/Al2O3catalyst and the bimetallic Ni-Co/Al2O3and Ni-Cu/Al2O3catalysts, the Ni-Cu-Co/Al2O3catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic activity because of the formation of Ni-Cu-Co alloy on the catalyst characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), N2physisorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The phenol conversion of 100% and the cyclohexane yield of 98.3% could be achieved in the in-situ hydrodeoxygenation of phenol at 240 °C and 4 MPa N2for 6 h. The synergistic effects of Ni with Cu and Co of the trimetallic Ni-Cu-Co/Al2O3catalyst played a significant role in the in-situ hydrodeoxygenation process of phenol, which not only had a positive effect on the production of hydrogen but also owned an excellent hydrogenolysis activity to accelerate the conversion of cyclohexanol to cyclohexane. Furthermore, the catalyst also exhibited excellent recyclability and good potential for the upgrading of bio-oils.Keywords:bio-derived phenol;Ni-Cu-Co/Al2O3;in-situ hydrodeoxygenation;cyclohexane;hydrogenolysis

Fabrication of highly active and durable Co/Al2O3 Fischer–Tropsch catalysts via coordination-assisted impregnation strategy

Yan Liu,Lei Li,Junfeng Zhang,Bo Hou

Optimizing metal nanoparticle size, dispersion, accessibility, and metal-support interaction has proven impactful for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) activity, selectivity of long-chain hydrocarbons and stability. Herein, the Co/Al 2 O 3 -CAI catalyst was successfully prepared by a coordination-assisted impregnation strategy. Compared with Co/Al 2 O 3 -EWI catalyst prepared by traditional impregnation method, the Co/Al 2 O 3 -CAI catalyst displayed superior FTS performance with a low methane selectivity (3.2 %) and surprisingly high C 5+ hydrocarbons selectivity (94.0 %) within 200 h reaction time. The catalyst remained excellent stability with ca. 40 % CO conversion even after 1600 h on stream. It revealed that the high dispersion of cobalt species as well as reduced CoAl 2 O 4 spinel could be achieved via a coordination-assisted impregnation strategy, which provide the increased number of surface-exposed Co sites. Meanwhile, the relatively strong metal-support interaction facilitated surface confinement of cobalt species and electron transfer, guarantying catalyst stability under long-term FTS process. This work provides a new insight into the design of highly efficient and stable catalysts for FTS reaction.

MOF-Templated Preparation of Highly Dispersed Co/Al2O3 Composite as the Photothermal Catalyst with High Solar-to-Fuel Efficiency for CO2 Methanation

Xi Chen,Qiang Li,Meng Zhang,Juanjuan Li,Songcai Cai,Jing Chen,Hongpeng Jia

CH4 production from CO2 hydrogenation provides a clean approach to convert greenhouse gas CO2 into chemical energy, but high energy consumption in this reaction still restrains its further application. Herein, we use a light-driven CO2 methanation process instead of traditional thermocatalysis by an electrical heating mode, with the aim of greatly decreasing the energy consumption. Under UV–vis–IR light irradiation, the photothermal CO2 methanation over highly dispersed Co nanoparticles supported on Al2O3 (Co/Al2O3) achieves impressive CH4 production rates (as high as 6036 μmol g–1 h–1), good CH4 selectivity (97.7%), and catalytic durability. The high light-harvesting property of the catalyst across the entire solar spectrum coupled with its strong adsorption capacity toward H2, CO2, CO, and abundant active sites are proposed to be responsible for the better photothermocatalytic performance of Co/Al2O3. Furthermore, a novel light-promotion effect is also revealed in CO2 methanation, where UV–vis light irradiation induces oxygen vacancies and improves the proclivity toward adsorption of H2, CO2, and CO, finally resulting in a significant enhancement of the photothermocatalytic activity for CH4 production. By concentrating the low-intensity light (120 mW/cm2) via a Fresnel lens, a photothermal CO2 conversion efficiency of more than 50% with a good CH4 selectivity (76%) is achieved on the optimal catalyst under a dynamic reaction system, which indicates the bright prospect of photothermal CO2 methanation.

Sol-gel auto-combustion synthesis of bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalysts for hydrogen production via acetic acid steam reforming

Hao Zhu,Yang Wang,Xiaoling Zheng,Pan Li,Yingying Zhu,Xinbao Li

Green hydrogen production from renewable biomass via bio-oil catalytic steam reforming was a prospective technology. In order to accelerate the development of high-performance and long-term catalyst, we selected acetic acid as a typical bio-oil model compound to carry out the studies of steam reforming. Excellent bimetallic Pt-Co/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared using a sol-gel auto-combustion method. The effects of the molar ratio of ethylene glycol : citric acid : metal ions (EG/CA/M) on the catalyst structure and subsequent reforming performance were systematically investigated. It was found that the catalyst’s textural properties, reducibility , basic sites, and the dispersion of active metal could be carefully tuned by the EG/CA/M ratio. The catalyst prepared under EG/CA/M ratio of 6:3:1 performed the best reactivity in acetic acid steam reforming, showing a 97.6% acetic acid conversion and a 96.6% H 2 yield at the reaction conditions of 650 °C, steam to carbon molar ratio of 5, and space velocity of 6957 h –1 . Furthermore, a bifunctional reaction mechanism of acetic acid catalytic steam reforming was proposed by in-situ diffuse reflective infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy analysis coupled with density functional theory calculations.

Comparison of Non-noble Metal Catalysts in Lipid Hydrotreatment into Second-Generation Bio-diesel

Xu Hui,Xing Feifei,Guo Yue,Wang Fei,Feng Junfeng,Li Hui,Jiang Xiaoxiang

To explore a green, cheap, and high-performance catalyst for lipid hydrotreatment into green diesel, the non-noble metal catalysts (Fe, Cu, Co, Ni, and Mo) with Al 2 O 3 carrier were prepared. Their catalytic performance in oleic acid hydrotreatment was compared, and the metal loading was studied. The characterizations (XRD, N 2 physical sorption, H 2 -TPR, and XPS) were utilized to elucidate the catalytic property. In oleic acid hydrotreatment, the catalytic activity of 5 monometallic catalysts was in the following order: Co > Mo > Ni > Fe > Cu, and the Co/Al 2 O 3 catalyst achieved 94.4% conversion and 91.8% alkane yield. Among 6 Co loadings (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 wt%), 25 wt% was optimal because it reached the balance of the surface area and the number of Co active sites. Moreover, the lipid hydrotreatment over Co/Al 2 O 3 catalyst occurred mainly via DCX/DCN route; meanwhile, the cracking reaction also happened. Graphical Abstract

Synthesis of Acetonitrile from Ethanol Dehydroamination over a La-Modified Co/Al2O3 Catalyst

Lin Mei,Chao Feng,Yuzhong Wang,Qiang Yu,Wenjie Xin,Weifeng Chu,Yanan Wang,Xiangxue Zhu,Shenglin Liu,Hongxia Wang,Longya Xu

Synthesis of acetonitrile (ACN) by way of ethanol dehydroamination process was performed over copper-, zinc-, nickel-, and cobalt-based catalysts in a fixed-bed reactor, by which 20Co/Al2O3 was found to be the best one and ready for subsequent La, Ce, and Pr doping. Then, catalytic tests and a series of characterizations such as XRD, XRF, XPS, TEM, TG-DTA, IGA, NH3-TPD, and N2 adsorption–desorption were carried out. The results demonstrate that rare-earth-modified 20Co/Al2O3 catalysts have improved the catalytic performance for ethanol dehydroamination remarkably; the addition of La leads to better dispersion of cobalt species, the higher surface area of 20Co/Al2O3 catalyst, and fast adsorption for ACN, as well as better resistance to carbon deposition. In the meantime, the La-doped catalyst seems to prefer the route of acetaldehyde imine to ACN rather than to ethylamine, and consequently, a highly selective synthesis of ACN with excellent catalytic stability was obtained with the formation of ethylamine being suppressed..

Low-temperature steam reforming of phenol for hydrogen production over Co/Al2O3–ash catalysts

Pan Li,Xinbao Li,Yang Wang,Pengfei Shen,Xinbo Zhu,Yingying Zhu,Zan Wu

A low-cost, high-performance catalyst for phenol steam reforming (PSR) at low temperature was prepared by introducing waste coal ash into Co/Al 2 O 3 . The optimized content of coal ash in the catalyst were ranged from 50 to 65 wt%, presenting over 97% phenol conversion and 92% H 2 yield at low temperature of 450 °C. The stability for the best catalyst with an ash content of 50 wt% exceeded 85 h. Two-step reduction of Co 3 O 4 to Co 0 via CoO was identified by in-situ XRD. DFT calculations showed that phenol adsorption and decomposition were preferred on the FeCo bimetal surface rather than the single Co surface. H 2 O adsorption and dissociation fascinated on the CaO incorporated Al 2 O 3 surface. Both Fe and Ca in the coal ash improved the catalyst performance in PSR at low temperature. This work gives an opportunity to solve the drawbacks of high reaction-temperature and low catalyst-stability in PSR, and furthermore benefits to get a deep insight into the reaction mechanism of PSR over the catalyst.

Promotion effect of different lanthanide doping on Co/Al2O3 catalyst for dry reforming of methane

Zhoujie Liang,Yu Zhang,Guojie Zhang,Jun Liu,Yajing Cai,Ying Wang,Yuqiong Zhao,Guoqiang Li,Kunlun Bei

In this paper, a series of cobalt catalysts modified by different lanthanide metals were synthesized via co-impregnation method using inexpensive industrial-grade alumina as a support for dry reforming of methane. The effect of lanthanide metals as accelerators of cobalt-based catalysts on catalytic performance and anti-coking properties was mainly investigated. The textural relationships between the catalytic performance and physicochemical properties of cobalt-based catalysts doped with different lanthanide metals were further investigated. Different characterization techniques demonstrate the positive effect of lanthanide metals on the physicochemical properties of catalysts. The results show that the electron transfer between cobalt species and lanthanide metal oxides is significantly enhanced due to the introduction of lanthanide elements. The process generates more active sites, which is favorable for the adsorption and activation of methane. In addition, the abundant medium basic sites and oxygen vacancies on the surface of cobalt-based catalysts with the effect of lanthanides promoted the adsorption and activation of carbon dioxide and the gasification of carbon accumulation, which greatly improved the anti-carbon accumulation performance of the catalysts. Therefore, the prepared cobalt-lanthanum-based catalysts showed the best catalytic effect and have great potential for application.

Enhancing the proportion of three-coordinated Al active sites on Co/Al2O3 for efficient CF4 decomposition

Heping Chen,Hang Zhang,Xiaojian Wang,Wenjie Luo,Jialin Zheng,Kang Liu,Junwei Fu,Hongmei Li,Zhang Lin,Liyuan Chai,Nan Hu,Min Liu

Aluminum (Al)-based catalysts are the most widely used materials for CF4 catalytic hydrolysis, where three-coordinated Al (AlIII) active sites play a pivotal role in C–F bond activation. The limited proportion of AlIII active sites in conventional Al-based catalysts suppresses their catalytic activity, thereby requiring high temperatures to achieve complete CF4 decomposition. In this work, we developed a Co-modified strategy to enhance CF4 hydrolysis performance by increasing the proportion of AlIII active sites. Structure characterization revealed that Co modification significantly raised the proportion of AlIII sites from 2% (pure Al2O3) to 13%. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) analysis showed that the 0.1Co/Al2O3 catalyst exhibits a CF4 adsorption capacity that is 2.0 times higher than that of unmodified Al2O3. Furthermore, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) detected a 2 cm−1 red shift in the characteristic C–F bond peaks on the 0.1Co/Al2O3 catalyst, indicating enhanced C–F bond activation. As a result, the 0.1Co/Al2O3 catalyst achieved 100% CF4 decomposition at 580 °C for over 170 hours, significantly outperforming pure Al2O3 (58% and 20 hours). This work opens up a new approach for developing highly efficient catalysts for CF4 hydrolysis at low temperatures.

Improvement of Microstructure and Properties of Ni-Co-Al2O3 Composite Coatings with Magnetic-Field Assisted Jet Electrodeposition

Guokang Zhang,Hui Fan,Shankui Wang,Yuhang Li

This study proposes a novel magnetic field-assisted jet electrodeposition method for preparing Ni–Co–Al2O3 composite coatings, in order to enhance the composite coating performance. The effects of magnetic field strength and particle concentration on the microstructure and properties of the coatings were systematically investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), microhardness testing, and wear tests. The results indicate that under optimal conditions (0.6 T magnetic field and 10 g/L Al2O3 concentration), the composite coating exhibits a dense and uniform surface, a high Al2O3 incorporation content of 3.63%, a maximum microhardness of 584.8 HV, a low friction coefficient of 0.18, a reduced wear rate of 12 mg/min.

Addition of tungsten in Co/Al2O3 to catalyse the production of hydrogen through acetic acid steam reforming

Yang Wang,Xinbao Li,Pan Li,Xinbo Zhu,Geng Chen,Yingying Zhu

Graphical Acetic acid is a main component of biomass pyrolysis oil. A high yield of hydrogen is obtained through steam reforming of acetic acid over a tungsten-modified Co/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. The interaction between the reactants and the catalyst surface is enhanced. Steam reforming of bio-oil is a promising green hydrogen production technology. Experimental and theoretical calculations have been carried out to study the performance of Co/Al 2 O 3 catalysts doped with tungsten (1–10 wt%) for bio-oil model compound acetic acid steam reforming. The maximum acetic acid conversion of 95.4 % and H 2 yield of 93.5 % were obtained over the 15Co-5W/Al 2 O 3 catalyst under the optimized reaction conditions of temperature=550 °C, steam to carbon ratio=5 and the gas hourly space velocity of 15,780 h −1 . The feeding capacity of the catalyst was improved by 2.3 times by the addition of 5 wt% W compared to that of the non-W-added Co/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. Catalyst characterizations by BET, XRD, H 2 -TPR, XPS, HRTEM, and SEM were performed. The results showed that high activities were maintained over 20 h on the 15Co-5W/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. A little filamentous coke was formed on the spent catalyst surface, and the agglomeration rate of active Co was relatively low. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that the adsorptions of CH 3 COOH and H 2 O on the catalyst were enhanced by the addition of W.
