Synthesis of borneol via isomerization of isoborneol catalyzed by Co/TiO2

Yuansen Xiao,Huimin Li,Zheng Wang,Zhihan Liu,Chenyang Li,Bin Wu,Longfei Yan,Huidong Zheng,Fuweng Zhang

Borneol synthesis faces challenges from co-generated impurities (isoborneol/camphor) and competing dehydration/dehydrogenation during isomerization. Here, Co/TiO 2 is demonstrated as a selective catalyst for isoborneol-to-borneol isomerization, effectively suppressing structural degradation. Controlled acidity and cobalt dispersion are identified as critical factors: TiO 2 's moderate acidity promotes isomerization, while strongly acidic supports (e.g., Mordenite) favor dehydration to camphene. Reduced cobalt particle size enhances active-site accessibility, lowering activation energy and boosting borneol yield. A one-pot two-step process achieves >62 % borneol content with <0.5 % camphor, meeting ChPC purity standards. This strategy bypasses traditional purification bottlenecks, offering a scalable route for high-purity borneol synthesis. The mechanistic insights into acid strength and metal dispersion provide a framework for rational catalyst design in industrial isomerization applications.

Photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over a CoO/Co/TiO2 catalyst in aqueous media under atmospheric pressure

Zhen-Hong He,Chong-Shan Jiang,Kuan Wang,Zhong-Yu Wang,Na Li,Wei-Tao Wang,Zhao-Tie Liu

Catalytic conversion of CO 2 into methanol is of particular interest as it does not only provide valuable methanol, but also utilize the waste CO 2 . In the present work, a CoO/Co/TiO 2 catalyst was developed and utilized in catalyzing CO 2 to methanol under photothermal conditions. From the results of characterization, the supported Co nanoparticles (NPs) were composed of Co 0 in the bulk, CoO film formed from air oxidation on the surface, and Co 0 at Co NPs-TiO 2 interfaces. This structure provided the possibility for a Z scheme photothermal catalytic system, which revealed a high activity for methanol formation in aqueous media under atmosphere pressure. It was proposed that the light excited electrons from the valence band (VB) of TiO 2 , and the excited electrons could enhance the Co 0 catalytic activity under thermal conditions. The present approach will offer a new strategy to design Co based Z scheme catalysts and further improve the conversion efficiency from CO 2 to fuels.

Combination of heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction and photocatalysis using Co–TiO2 nanocatalyst for activation of KHSO5 with visible light irradiation at ambient conditions

Qingkong Chen,Fangying Ji,Qian Guo,Jianping Fan,Xuan Xu

A novel coupled system using Co–TiO 2 was successfully designed which combined two different heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes, sulfate radical based Fenton-like reaction (SR-Fenton) and visible light photocatalysis (Vis-Photo), for degradation of organic contaminants. The synergistic effect of SR-Fenton and Vis-Photo was observed through comparative tests of 50   mg/L Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation and TOC removal. The Rhodamine B degradation rate and TOC removal were 100% and 68.1% using the SR-Fenton/Vis-Photo combined process under ambient conditions, respectively. Moreover, based on XRD, XPS and UV-DRS characterization, it can be deduced that tricobalt tetroxide located on the surface of the catalyst is the SR-Fenton active site, and cobalt ion implanted in the TiO 2 lattice is the reason for the visible light photocatalytic activity of Co–TiO 2 . Finally, the effects of the calcination temperature and cobalt concentration on the synergistic performance were also investigated and a possible mechanism for the synergistic system was proposed. This coupled system exhibited excellent catalytic stability and reusability, and almost no dissolution of Co 2   + was found.

Bimetallic Fe, Co-Modified TiO2 Derived from NH2-MIL-125(Ti) as an Efficient Photocatalyst for N2 Fixation

Huiying Yang,Xiangchao Meng

The conversion of nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O) into NH3by photocatalysis under ambient conditions has been considered an environmentally friendly strategy. However, developing effective catalysts for N2fixation is still challenging. Herein, we report a bimetallic JH Fe, Co/TiO2derived from NH2-MIL-125(Ti) by the fast Joule heating (FJH) method for visible–light–driven catalytic N2fixation. It was found that the photocatalytic N2reduction efficiency of bimetallic FC@TiO2-JH was improved, enabling an NH3yield rate of 110.14 µmol g−1h−1without any sacrificial agents. Furthermore, the rate was higher than those of Fe@TiO2-JH and Co@TiO2-JH, suggesting that the synergistic effect between Fe and Co broke the electronic equilibrium and increased the center of its d-band, enhancing electronic feedback to the antibonding π* orbitals of N2while weakening the bonding energy of N≡N. Meanwhile, the rate was about 2.75 times higher than that of FC@TiO2-TF, which was calcined in a tube furnace. It is assumed that FJH might lead to the formation of lattice defects, leading to localized charge deficiency, enhanced carrier separation, and transport. Thus, doping of Fe and Co synergistically interacted with the defects produced from FJH, facilitating the photocatalytic reduction process. As detected, it had a greater ability to separate hole–electron pairs and transferred electrons to adsorbed N2at faster rates. Our work demonstrates a prospective strategy for designing bimetallic catalysts derived from NH2-MIL-125(Ti) for N2fixation.

Synthesis of bio-based caprolactam through dehydration and cyclization of 6-hydroxycaproamide

Zhai Chenghan,Ma Zhengxiang,Wang Yanji

The preparation of caprolactam (CPL) from biomass as raw material is a very hot topic of current concern. In this paper, a new way to synthesize CPL from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was proposed, and the catalytic reaction of cyclization of the intermediate 6-hydroxycaproamide (6-HCM) was studied to provide a basis for the synthesis of bio-based CPL. A bimetallic catalyst, Ru–Co/TiO 2 , was prepared using the impregnation method and characterized using XRD, XPS, H 2 -TPR, and TEM. The investigation delves into the impact of various parameters, including metal loading, choice of solvent, solvent ratio, catalyst dosage, and reaction time, on the yield of the final product. The findings demonstrate a significant synergistic effect between Ru and Co in the bimetallic Ru 5 Co 6 /TiO 2 catalyst, leading to improved catalytic performance. Under the optimized reaction conditions (250 °C, 1 MPa N 2 , 1,4-dioxane: NH 3 ·H 2 O = 2:1 as the solvent ratio), the conversion rate of 6-HCM reaches 99.0%, with CPL yield of 62.2%.

Highly flexible, core-shell heterostructured, and visible-light-driven titania-based nanofibrous membranes for antibiotic removal and E. coil inactivation

Jun Song,Xiaohui Wu,Meng Zhang,Cheng Liu,Jianyong Yu,Gang Sun,Yang Si,Bin Ding

Functional semiconductor nanomaterials modified TiO 2 fibrous membranes with desirable heterostructures, good mechanical properties, and superior visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity would have broad applications in environmental remediation; however, constructing such fantastic fibrous membranes still remains an enormous challenge. Herein, we fabricated a soft and heterostructured g-C 3 N 4 @Co-TiO 2 (CNCT) nanofibrous membranes by a facile electrospinning approach and subsequent thermal polymerization process. The ultrathin g-C 3 N 4 nanoshell was in situ synthesized and uniformly wrapped onto Co-TiO 2 nanofiber to form core-shell quantum heterojunction , and the thickness and loading amount of g-C 3 N 4 nanoshell can be precisely controlled through simply regulating the content of precursor (melamine). Benefiting from the three-dimensional porous networks, enhanced visible-light response, and the effective charge transfer induced by uniform and compact heterojunction, the as-synthesized CNCT membranes exhibited a prominent photodegradation efficiency of 90.8% within 60 min towards tetracycline hydrochloride, and also displayed excellent antibacterial performance with a 6 log inactivation of E. coil after 90 min visible light exposure. Moreover, the stable core-shell structures and robust mechanical strength also endow the membranes with favorable reversibility and easy-recycling ability. This study may open up new avenues for designing and constructing flexible high-performance photocatalytic membranes for water purification.

Degradation of thiosulfate ions in sodium aluminate solution photocatalyzed by Co-TiO2@ZIF-8

Jingyi Hao,Binchuan Li,Jing Dai,Daxue Fu,Yongfeng Chang,Jianshe Chen,Na Xu,Kuiren Liu,Qing Han

The strongly alkaline sodium aluminate solution generated from high-sulfur bauxites during their refinement through the Bayer process contains sulfur, mainly in the form of thiosulfate (S 2 O 3 2− ) ions, which affects the quality of the target product (alumina). Consequently, the large-scale use of high-sulfur bauxites is severely limited, and methods of desulfurizing sodium aluminate solutions are urgently needed. To address this need, we herein prepared metal–organic framework (ZIF-8)-supported Co-doped TiO 2 (Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8) using a sol–gel method and low-temperature calcination under N 2 and examined the ability of this composite to photocatalyze the oxidative degradation of thiosulfate ions in sodium aluminate solutions. Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 retained the large specific surface area and rich porosity of ZIF-8, which reduced the agglomeration of TiO 2 particles on the surface. The loading of Co-TiO 2 endowed Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 with a mesoporous structure and thus increased its adsorption capacity. Compared with ZIF-8, Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 featured new functional groups, and the formation of Zn–C and N–Ti–O bonds confirmed the successful integration of Co-TiO 2 with the ZIF-8 carrier. Consequently, the thiosulfate removal rates by Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 were 42 % and 26 % higher than those observed for the blank sample and pure TiO 2 (light source = xenon arc lamp, oxidant = O 3 , reaction time = 60 min), respectively. This high performance is primarily due to Co doping, which enhanced the efficiency of visible light utilization, and the photogenerated electron–hole pairs on the photocatalyst surface and hydroxyl radicals formed by the interaction of holes with the solution-phase OH − ions.

Regulation of metal-support interaction for enhanced Fischer-Tropsch synthesis over Co/TiO2 catalysts

Xuan Zhou,Ding Du,Shan Qiao,Xiao Yang,Ranqing Zhang,Yuanyuan Dai,Tiejun Lin,Yunlei An,Liangshu Zhong

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) performance of Co/TiO 2 supported catalysts is strongly influenced by the TiO 2 crystal phase. It was found that Co/r-TiO 2 (rutile) exhibited high FTS activity, while Co/a-TiO 2 (anatase) showed negligible activity due to facile reduction of a-TiO 2 , which induced TiO x migration over Co nanoparticles under H 2 to form a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) layer. The formed TiO x layer would encapsulate Co active sites and suppress CO chemisorption with low activity. However, when a-TiO 2 support was pre-reduced in H 2 before Co loading, the resulting Co/a-TiO 2 (H 2 ) catalyst achieved a remarkable increase for CO conversion from 0% to 60.7%. Structural characterization confirmed that H 2 pretreatment generated abundant oxygen vacancies in a-TiO 2 (H 2 ), which effectively regulated the interaction between Co and TiO 2 support. As a result, the SMSI-induced encapsulation was inhibited with more exposed metallic Co active sites, which would enhance CO chemisorption and catalytic activity. This work presents an effective H 2 pretreatment strategy for tailoring SMSI-governed interfacial structure and optimizing the FTS performance of Co/TiO 2 catalysts.

Synergistic regulation and efficient electromagnetic wave absorption of MOF-derived Co/TiO2@C hierarchical structures

Liang Zhou,Mingkang Zhang,Jingyi He,Hongbo Wang,Minjia Luo

• Co/TiO 2 @C composites are derived from bimetallic MOF. • • Minimum reflection loss of −64.5 dB at 1.8 mm thickness is achieved. • • Effective absorption bandwidth of 3.2 GHz in X-band. • • Hierarchical structure boosts interfacial and dipole polarization. In this study, disk-shaped MIL-125(Ti,Co)- x precursors were synthesized via a solvothermal method with varying CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O content, and subsequently Co/TiO 2 @C composites were fabricated through a two-step pyrolysis process. The precursor morphology transforms from intact micron-scale disks into thinner flakes, and ultimately into fragmented structures with increasing the cobalt content. The pyrolysis temperature concurrently governed the composition of TiO 2 phase, the degree of carbon graphitization, and the distribution of nanoparticles. The optimized Co/TiO 2 @C(700)-2 composite achieves a minimum reflection loss of −64.5 dB at a matching thickness of 1.8 mm, and exhibits an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.2 GHz at 2.1 mm. The outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption properties stem from a favorable synergy between adequate attenuation and satisfactory impedance matching, supported by the conductive carbon network, abundant defect sites, multiple TiO 2 /carbon heterointerfaces, and hierarchical porous architecture. These results establish the cooperative regulation of electromagnetic wave absorption properties by cobalt content and pyrolysis temperature, offering a strategy for the design of MOF-derived lightweight absorbers with tunable electromagnetic wave absorption. Mechanochemical construction of MgO–Co–TiO2 dual-function materials for intermediate-temperature integrated CO2 capture and methanation

Muqiu Liu,Chenghu Wei,Rui Tu,Keran Lv,Junxia Yang,Tie Yu

This study reports a ternary dual-function material (DFM) prepared via a facile mechanochemical strategy for integrated in situ CO2 capture and methanation at 250 °C, and reveals the role of mechanical ball milling in regulating morphology and optimizing the catalytic reaction pathway. MgO–Co–TiO2 composite was directly constructed via mechanochemical ball milling at 800 rpm, without additional loading or calcination steps. The ball milling process promotes homogeneous mixing of the components and the formation of three-phase interfaces. At 250 °C, the system achieved an H2 conversion of 68.52% under mechanical vibration, which was significantly higher than that under static conditions, while the mechanical energy consumption accounted for less than 5% of the total energy input. Comprehensive characterization results indicate that mechanochemical ball milling generates abundant surface oxygen defects and enhances interfacial coupling among the components, thereby facilitating the hydrogenation of captured carbonate intermediates. Regarding cyclic stability, , the cyclic stability of the system was significantly improved by implementing a strategy to ensure an excess carbon capacity supply, with H2 conversion remaining stable above 40% over 13 consecutive cycles. The findings indicate that integrating mechanochemical treatment with dual-function materials provides a workable route for intermediate-temperature CO2 capture and methanation, without relying on high-temperature preparation steps.

Enhanced catalytic performance of transition metal-doped Co/TiO2 for continuous-flow synthesis of borneol from isoborneol

Chenyang Li,Zhihan Liu,Huimin Li,Yunsen Xiao,Ying Huang,Yuting Lin,Jie Liu,Bin Wu,Fuweng Zhang,Huidong Zheng,Longfei Yan

Borneol, a pharmaceutically important monoterpenoid, has emerged as a key ingredient in modern medicinal formulations. Here, we report a highly efficient heterogeneous catalytic system using transition metal-doped Co/TiO2 catalysts for the continuous-flow isomerization of isoborneol to borneol. Through systematic screening of bimetallic combinations, we demonstrate that Cu and Ni dopants synergistically enhance the redox properties of Co species, particularly improving hydrogenation–dehydrogenation efficiency in the isomerization of isoborneol. The optimized 1Cu–3Co/TiO2 catalyst (Cu : Co = 1 : 3 mass ratio) enabled a two-stage continuous-flow system, achieving 58% molar yield of borneol with <0.4% camphor byproduct formation after solvent removal. Remarkably, the catalyst maintained >99% metal retention during a total of 200 h of continuous reaction. This work not only provides fundamental insights into promoter effects in bimetallic catalysis but also establishes a commercially viable platform for continuous production of high-purity botanical therapeutics.

CO2 Hydrogenation on Unpromoted and M-Promoted Co/TiO2 Catalysts (M = Zr, K, Cs): Effects of Crystal Phase of Supports and Metal–Support Interaction on Tuning Product Distribution

Wenhui Li,Guanghui Zhang,Xiao Jiang,Yi Liu,Jie Zhu,Fanshu Ding,Zhongmin Liu,Xinwen Guo,Chunshan Song

Cobalt catalysts supported on TiO2 with different crystal forms (anatase and rutile) differ sharply in CO2 conversion and product selectivity for CO2 hydrogenation. The Co/rutile-TiO2 catalyst selectively catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation to CH4, while CO is the main product on the Co/anatase-TiO2 catalyst. In situ DRIFT (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform) results have partially revealed the reaction pathway of CO2 hydrogenation on these two catalysts. On Co/rutile-TiO2, the reaction proceeds through the key intermediate formate species, which is further converted to CH4. Differently, the reaction on Co/anatase-TiO2 undergoes CO2 → *CO, which desorbs to form gas-phase CO instead of subsequent hydrogenation. The strongly bonded *CO is required to enhance the subsequent hydrogenation. By simply changing the calcination temperature of anatase TiO2, the product selectivity can be tuned from CO to CH4 with a significant increase in CO2 conversion due to the surface phase transition of the anatase to the rutile phase. The addition of Zr, K, and Cs further improves the CO, CO2, and H2 adsorption in both the capacity and strength over anatase- and rutile-supported catalysts. The Zr modification makes the reaction pathway over anatase-supported catalyst proceed via the intermediate formate species and enables the subsequent hydrogenation to CH4. In addition, the surface C/H ratio increases significantly in the presence of promoters (unpromoted < Zr-promoted < K-Zr-promoted ∼ Cs-Zr-promoted), which leads to the highest C2+ selectivity of 17% with 70% CO2 conversion over K-Zr-Co/anatase-TiO2 catalyst. These results reveal mechanistic insights into how the product distribution of Co/TiO2 catalysts can be manipulated through adjusting the adsorption performance and surface C/H ratio.
