Co/MgO, Co/SiO 2 and Co/Hβ catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. The formation of MgO-CoO solid solution and MgCo 2 O 4 spinel in Co/MgO resulted in high dispersions of Co on MgO even at the low calcined temperatures and the high Co loadings. The second impregnation of Co on Co/MgO enhanced Co cations in surface/subsurface of catalysts, which led to the enlarged metallic Co particle sizes by H 2 reduction. Comparatively, the highly dispersion of Co was only observed on SiO 2 and Hβ at the low Co loadings owing to the Co δ + species of strong interactions with these supports. The solid solution/spinel and the strongly interacted Co δ + species induced the Co cations reduced at higher temperatures with obtaining the small Co particle sizes. These cases also significantly decreased the basicities of Co/MgO depending on calcined temperature and Co loadings, and increased the acidic sites of Co/SiO 2 and Co/Hβ with obtaining enhanced acidities, respectively. During hydrogenolysis processing, the basic sites of Co/MgO triggers the splitting of acyl C O bond of methyl heptanoate to form heptanal and methanol, followed by further hydrogenation of heptanal to 1-heptanol. While the acidic Co/SiO 2 and Co/Hβ induce the cracking of ether C O bond to heptanoic acid and CH 4 . Heptanoic acid intermediate is then converted into C 6 and C 7 alkanes by the parallel decarbonylation and HDO pathways, respectively. The activity and product distribution could be facilely mediated by the synergistic catalysis of metal and acid/base. Under optimal conditions, the maximal 1-heptanol and summed C 6 /C 7 alkanes yields of 55% and 89% were observed over Co/MgO and Co/SiO 2 with desire Co loadings, respectively, indicating the promising applications of these catalysts in hydrogenolysis of vegetable oils.

Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol (FFA) into high-value 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PDO) is a promising route to decrease reliance on fossil energy, in which improving catalytic efficiency is a crucial issue. Herein, a series of CoMgO/C catalysts were synthesized from multivariate metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). It was found that the 3-CoMgO/C-500 catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic efficiency, achieving a 25.2 mmol/(g cat. ·h) 1,5-PDO productivity at 160 °C and 2.5 MPa H 2 pressure. Based on the characterizations and DFT calculations, the Mg clusters-derived MgO located adjacent to Co species and enhanced the dispersion of Co phase. Moreover, the spatial proximal MgO can effectively facilitate electron transfer, form interaction with Co active sites and promote the dissociation of hydrogen, which is favor for the hydrogenolysis process. Furthermore, with the assistance of MgO, the CoMgO/C catalyst could adopt the dual O adsorption configuration and activate the C2 O1 bond in FFA molecules, resulting in higher efficiency for the ring-opening reaction of FFA. This work reveals the assistance mechanism of MgO on improving catalytic performance of active sites through modulation of the electronic structure and adsorption configuration, which provides a deep insight into the design of economical and highly efficient catalysts for the production of bio-1,5-PDO.

CeO2 with three different morphologies of nanorods (CeO2-r), particles (CeO2-p), and cubes (CeO2-c) was prepared, and the guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation over their corresponding Co-based catalysts was performed at 160–220 °C, 2 MPa, a H2 flow rate of 80 mL/min, and a weight hourly space velocity of 0.7 h–1. Compared with Co/CeO2-p and Co/CeO2-c, Co/CeO2-r has smaller Co particle sizes, a higher Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area, and larger amount of Co active centers, oxygen vacancies, and weak acid sites. These better physicochemical properties for Co/CeO2-r provide more Co active sites for guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation, favor the adsorption and activation of guaiacol, and contribute to the cleavage of C–O. Therefore, Co/CeO2-r presents a maximum guaiacol conversion of 97.1% and the highest yield of cyclohexanol of 91.7% among these catalysts. The result shows that the shape structure of CeO2 has an important influence on the guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation performance over its corresponding catalysts.
