Nitrogen-doped carbon wrapped Co-Mo2C dual Mott–Schottky nanosheets with large porosity for efficient water electrolysis

Pengfei Zhang,Yaoda Liu,Tingting Liang,Edison Huixiang Ang,Xu Zhang,Fei Ma,Zhengfei Dai

Efficient, inexpensive and stable electrocatalysts are challenging and desperately required in order to complement the water electrolysis of noble metal catalysts. Herein, a porous nitrogen-doped carbon wrapped Co-Mo 2 C dual Mott–Schottky heterostructure has been successfully fabricated by carbonization of Co-Zn bimetal metal-organic framework (MOF) for water electrolysis. The heterostructure is found to feature with Co and Mo 2 C nanoparticles uniformly encapsulated in the highly porous leaf-like N-doped carbon nanosheet matrix. Such a thin porous dual-Mott–Schottky configuration can afford abundant surface active sites and the boosted electron transfer to promote the water splitting. As for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER), it has demonstrated fast kinetics and low overpotentials of 92 mV (HER) and 338 mV (OER) at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Furthermore, the overall water splitting is stably delivered with a low cell voltage of 1.68 V at 10 mA cm -2 in 1 M KOH. Density function theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the interface correlation is favorable to water transfer by electron and speeds up adsorption and water dissociation. The work here opens up interesting possibilities for the rational design and innovation of MOF derived Mott–Schottky electrocatalysts for highly efficient water electrolysis.

Bimetallic Co/Mo2C Nanoparticles Embedded in 3D Hierarchical N-doped Carbon Heterostructures as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting

Jinxu Zhang,Xueping P. Sun,Peng Wei,Gongchang Lu,Shixiong X. Sun,Yue Xu,Chun Fang,Qing Li,Jiantao T. Han

Graphical Bifunctional electrocatalysts : The bimetallic Co/Mo 2 C nanoparticles wrapped in N-doped carbon heterostructures can significantly boost the OER and HER performance for the modulation of the intrinsic electronic structures and construction of the geometric structures. This work not only provides a facile and practical strategy to construct an affordable and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst but also inspires future work in the rational design of composites and nanostructures. Modulating intrinsic electronic and geometric structures of bimetallic electrocatalysts has been regarded as a promising strategy to effectively solve the sluggish kinetics and large overpotential of OER (Oxygen evolution reaction) and HER (Hydrogen evolution reaction) involved in future large-scale electricity-to-hydrogen generation. Here, the bifunctional Co/Mo 2 C electrocatalysts encapsulated in 3D hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers synchronously rooted with abundant carbon nanotubes (Co/Mo 2 C-NCNTs) were successfully fabricated by a facile electrospinning method. Due to the unique heterostructures and strong synergetic effects between Co and Mo 2 C nanoparticles to improve OH − affinity, moderate Mo−H bonds, and expose more active sites, the Co/Mo 2 C-NCNTs displayed a tiny overpotential for OER ( η 10 =310 mV) and HER ( η 10 =170 mV) and stably operated for 24 h. Moreover, the results of a water electrolysis device demonstrated that the faradaic efficiency was close to 100 %, which further proved that this method was feasible and effective to fabricate high-efficiency bifunctional non-noble electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Co/Mo2C-Embedded N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes Combined with Molecularly Imprinted Membranes for Selective Electrocatalytic Determination of Imidacloprid

Dongshi Feng,Jiangdong Dai,Yongsheng Yan,Chunxiang Li

Developing a catalyst with excellent electrical conductivity and catalytic performance for on-site testing of residual imidacloprid is significant and challenging. In situ growth of Mo2C nanodots on Co-induced N-doped carbon nanotubes (Co/Mo2C/N-CNT) was synthesized to construct a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor for the detection of imidacloprid. The results proved that the catalytic performance of Co/Mo2C/N-CNT for imidacloprid was over two times higher than those of Co/N-CNT and commercial CNT. This improvement was attributed to the formation of a heterostructure between Co species, Mo2C, and N-CNT, which facilitated highly exposed catalytic active sites. Additionally, the abundant Mo2C nano-dots promoted interfacial charge transfer to achieve optimal dynamics. The optimum preparation parameters of the catalysts were obtained by response surface methodology. By analyzing the relationship between different pH values and peak potential, as well as the influence of different scanning rates on peak potential, it was deduced that the possible electrocatalytic mechanism of imidacloprid involved the reduction of the nitro group to a hydroxylamine group and H2O. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.033 × 10−6mol·L−1(R2= 0.99698), and the linear range was 0.1 × 10−6~100 × 10−6mol·L−1. The application effect of the prepared sensor was evaluated by measuring the imidacloprid in two kinds of tea, indicating that the sensor possessed good sensitivity and selectivity, and was capable of meeting the requirements of on-site detection.

Hollow but perforated C/Co/Mo2C cubes enhance electromagnetic absorption

Xinghang Duan,Qiaolin Li,Tiantian Cao,Shengxiang Xiong,Gang Chen,Chengjun Dong,Hongtao Guan,Zongyou Yin

The development of advanced electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers is crucial for applications in stealth technology and EM interference shielding. A major challenge in this field is achieving high absorption efficiency across a broad frequency range while maintaining lightweight and structurally robust materials. In this study, we successfully developed a precise and flexible synthesis strategy to prepare hollow C/Co/Mo2C cubes using Zn/Co(C4O4)(H2O)2 as a flexible template, which offers the advantages of simultaneous removal and easy control of metal Co content. The shell of the hollow cubes can be further optimized by changing the oxidizer content for polypyrrole (PPy). At optimum shell thickness and Co content, the C/Co/Mo2C-0.4 composites, featuring hollow but perforated structures, exhibit superior EM wave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −73.46 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.20 GHz at 2.0 mm with 15 wt% filler. Detailed investigations reveal that the hollow C/Co/Mo2C-0.4 cubes provide polarization loss, conduction loss, magnetic loss, and optimal impedance matching characteristics, significantly enhancing EM wave absorption performance. This work offers a promising strategy for assembling multiple components into a hollow architecture, offering superior molybdenum carbide microwave absorbers.

Mo2C Morphology Dependence in Co–Mo2C Interface Structure Evaluation for Boosting α-Olefin Hydroformylation

Zhuo Li,Huimin Yang,Rui Gao,Peng He,Xingchen Liu,Ruilin Liu,Xiaomin Dai,Yunhua Xu,Yong Qin,Bin Zhang

The hydroformylation of high-carbon α-olefins is a pivotal industrial process. Still, heterogeneous Co-based catalysts suffer from low activity and Co leaching due to strong coordination of CO to Co atoms. Herein, we address the dynamic evolution and active structure of Co species by interacting Co nanoparticles or ultrahigh-dispersed clusters with β-Mo2C nanoparticles (Co-30Mo2Cparticle/CNF) and nanofilms (Co-100Mo2Cfilm/CNF) on carbon nanofibers. The specific activity in the formation of heptanal from 1-hexene hydroformylation increased by 10.7 times on Co-30Mo2Cparticle/CNF (21.4 molheptanal/molCo/h) and 2.4 times on Co-100Mo2Cfilm/CNF (4.7 molheptanal/molCo/h) compared with Co/CNF (2.0 molheptanal/molCo/h). Moreover, Co-100Mo2Cfilm/CNF exhibits enhanced stability with only 1.7% Co leaching. The Mo2C nanoparticles interact with Co nanoparticles, oxidizing them to form highly active Co-MoOx sites with a lower CO insertion barrier. The reaction environment influences the structural evolution of the Co-MoOx interaction. In contrast, Mo2C nanofilms form robust Co–C and Co–Mo bonds at the Co–Mo2C interface, stabilizing atomically distributed Co clusters against leaching. This work establishes a morphology-driven strategy to control the dynamic interaction of Co and additives, thereby decoupling activity and stability in heterogeneous catalysis for hydroformylation.

Controllable preparation of 3D porous Co/Mo2C/C aerogels: Synergizing multifunctionality with efficient microwave absorption performance

He Wang,Liru Cui,Tiantian Ma,Zhaoxu Zhu,Wei Guo,Feng Zhang,Yanduo Liu

Biomass-derived carbon-based composites are widely recognized as prospective candidates for high-performance microwave absorbing materials (MAMs), leveraging synergistic electromagnetic loss mechanisms and charming structural effects. However, uneven distribution of heterogeneous components and complex preparation processes limit performance elevation and large-scale application. Herein, a novel “one-step gelation coupled with simultaneous pyrolysis” strategy is proposed to successfully prepare 3D porous Co/Mo 2 C/C aerogels using lotus root powder as carbon source. This strategy achieves in-situ reduction and carbonization of Co and Mo species, resulting in uniformly dispersed nanoparticles within carbon matrix. Mo 2 C nanoparticles serve as structural scaffolds to inhibit carbon framework collapse during pyrolysis, thus preserving 3D porous architecture. Sufficient heterogeneous interfaces among Mo 2 C, carbon, and Co notably enhance dielectric loss. Additionally, the introduced Co nanoparticles contribute magnetic loss and synergize with the porous structure to optimize impedance matching. By regulating the content of Mo 2 C, the optimized Co/Mo 2 C/C-2 demonstrates satisfactory microwave absorption performance. Its minimum reflection loss ( RL ) and effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB 10 ) can reach up to −64.5 dB and 4.8 GHz with a thickness of only 1.4 mm, along with a broad integrated EAB 10 of 14.7 GHz within a thickness range of 1.0 mm to 5.0 mm. Furthermore, the composite inherits bio-carbon's lightweight trait and exhibits decent hydrophobicity and thermal insulation, endowing it with adaptability and broad application potential in complex service environments. These merits make Co/Mo 2 C/C aerogels highly competitive for advanced electromagnetic protection and stealth applications in harsh and complex service environments.

MOF derived Co–Mo2C heterojunctions with interfacial electronic modulation for oxygen reduction reaction and zinc–air batteries

Desheng Li,Qin Li,Peng Xu,Xingyu Guo,Heng Wu,Rui Liu,Fei Tan

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems due to their high energy density, safety, and environmental benignity. However, their efficiency is hindered by sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. Constructing heterojunction with optimized interfacial electronic structure has emerged as a promising approach to enhance ORR activity. Herein, we report a Co–Mo 2 C heterojunction encapsulated within nitrogen-doped carbon (Co–Mo 2 C@NC) derived from a ZnCoMo-based metal–organic framework (ZnCoMo–HZIF). The intimate interface between Co and Mo 2 C enables the strong electronic coupling, which induces the interfacial charge redistribution and optimizes the d-band center of Co active sites. This electronic modulation significantly enhances the oxygen intermediate adsorption and lowers the energy barrier. As a result, Co–Mo 2 C@NC delivers outstanding ORR performance with a high half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.85 V, a low Tafel slope of 94.7 mV dec -1 , and a good long-term stability. Additionally, Co–Mo 2 C@NC as the air cathode in a zinc-air battery exhibits superior power performance and outstanding cycling stability.

Small-sized Ni-Co/Mo2C/Co6Mo6C2@C for efficient alkaline and acidic hydrogen evolution reaction by an anchoring calcination strategy

Gu Jianxia,Zhu Ying,Zheng Haiyan,Sun Chunyi,Su Zhongmin

A novel, cheap and highly efficient Ni-Co/Mo 2 C/Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 @C nanocomposite has been successfully constructed through simple one-step carbonization method in a nitrogen atmosphere. Polyethyleneimine in the precursor can effectively anchor molybdenum-based Keggin-type polyoxometallate and NiCo-layered double hydroxide through electrostatic and coordination interactions, which avoids the aggregation of catalyst particles during the pyrolysis process. After optimization, the obtained Ni-Co/Mo 2 C/Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 @C possesses small size (3–8 nm), large specific surface area and hierarchical pore structure. More importantly, Ni-Co/Mo 2 C/Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 @C presents remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction activity with low overpotentials in 0.5 mol·L −1 H 2 SO 4 (102.3 mV) and 1 mol·L −1 KOH (95 mV) to afford the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , as well as small Tafel slopes of 82.49 and 99.92 mV·dec −1 , respectively. Simultaneously, this catalyst also shows outstanding stability for 12 h without a significant change in current density. The excellent catalytic performance of Ni-Co/Mo 2 C/Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 @C can put down to the synergistic effect between multiple components and the small size of the catalyst. This work provides unique insights into the preparation of efficient transition metal-based catalysts for HER.

Facile Route to Achieve Co@Mo2C Encapsulated by N-Doped Carbon as Efficient Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting in Alkaline Media

Usman Ali,Yue Yu,Jinrui Guo,Yuqi Liu,Zhongcheng Mu,Shuangxi Xing

The development of inexpensive, highly efficient and stable noble metal-free heterostructure bifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial for water electrolysis. Herein, a facile strategy is utilized by pyrolyzing the mixture containing ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate and zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 to achieve a product with Co nanoparticles as core and β-Mo2C embedded in N-doped carbon as a shell (Co@β-Mo2C-NC). The Co@β-Mo2C-NC-0.115 (quantity of Mo precursor) composite illustrates an overpotential (η10) of 188 and 330 mV for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively, and a cell voltage of 1.72 V is required for overall water splitting to attain a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline media. Remarkably, the Co@β-Mo2C-NC-0.115 catalyst exhibits excellent stability for continuous operation of 15 h chronopotentiometry and 25 h chronoamperometry measurements. The satisfactory electrocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the unique core–shell nanostructure, especially the synergistic effect between Co, β-Mo2C and N-doped carbon. These research findings speculate a straightforward strategy to fabricate MOF derived heterostructures with robust catalytic performance and wide applications in electrocatalysis.
