Building p-p heterojunctions with Fermi level difference, due to the motion of energy levels, band bending, and internal electric field generation, can effectively improve the electronic structure of the interface, enrich the active sites of heterojunctions, and promote the adsorption of reaction intermediates, which is an effective approach to constructing high-performance electrocatalysts . In this study, a Co 3 O 4 /MoS 2 p-p heterojunction catalyst with nano-particle/nano-flower structure was designed, inducing charge transfer from Co 3 O 4 to MoS 2 , thereby increasing the negative charge of MoS 2 , improving *H adsorption through electrostatic interaction , enhancing electrocatalytic kinetics, and reducing reaction overpotential. The catalytic performance of MoS 2 for hydrogen evolution reaction was effectively enhanced. In 1 M KOH solution, the current density was 10 mA cm −2 , and the overpotential was 156 mV, with good stability after 40 h of operation. This work provides a new direction for the design of p-p heterojunction electrocatalysts and offers more choices for promoting the development of high-performance non-noble metal catalysts.
The global energy crisis and unsustainable reliance on fossil fuels make it particularly urgent to develop efficient renewable energy storage solutions. Aqueous zinc–air batteries (ZABs) have become extremely promising candidates due to their low cost, abundant surface resources, inherent safety, and high theoretical energy density. This study explores the feasibility of using seawater as an electrolyte for ZABs, with the aim to reduce costs and alleviate competition for limited freshwater resources. Research results indicate that ZABs using seawater electrolytes with varying salinities (1.4–10%) show good bifunctional catalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with defect-driven Co3O4–MoS2 bifunctional catalysts, while maintaining strong catalytic activity and stability in nonextreme salinity environments. The assembled ZABs with defect-driven Co3O4–MoS2 bifunctional catalysts display a charge–discharge voltage difference of less than 1.1 V, can stably operate for more than 360 cycles at a current density of 5 mA/cm2, and exhibit strong tolerance to halogen ions, with performance comparable to that of batteries using conventional deionized water-based electrolytes. These findings underscore the feasibility of seawater-based ZABs, breaking through the limitations of traditional deionized water-based electrolytes and expanding the application prospects of aqueous ZABs in the realm of sustainable energy storage.
Electrochemical reduction of nitrate to NH 3 is a very promising alternative reaction to the Haber-Bosch process, and it is necessary to develop the efficient electrocatalysts. In this study, a particle-support mode Co 3 O 4 catalyst was synthesized with ZIF-67 as the precursor, and then dispersed on MoS 2 nanoflowers by hydrothermal method. The Co 3 O 4 is anchored to MoS 2 by forming Co-S coordination bond. Furthermore, the particle-supported Co 3 O 4 exhibits better performance than Co 3 O 4 alone, as is manifested by higher Faradaic efficiencies and NH 3 yield rate at − 0.64 V (52.69% vs 32.03%; 4539.61 μg h −1 mg −1 cat vs 2048.63 μg h −1 mg −1 cat ), lower energy barriers (0.96 eV vs 1.19 eV), and better electronic conductivity (Bandwidth: 0.581 eV vs 0.613 eV). In addition, this research provides an effective solution to solve the aggregation problem of metal oxide nanoparticles.
