A novel Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 (BCCN) photocatalyst with p-n/n-n heterojunction was synthesized through a solvent-thermal method. The degradation efficiency of 20 mg/L iohexol reached 94 % in 60 min ( k app =0.0417 min −1 ) in BCCN/light/PS system, which was 2.8 and 6.5 times higher than systems of BCCN/light ( k app =0.0150 min −1 ) and BCCN/PS ( k app =0.0064 min −1 ). The g-C 3 N 4 addition lowered conduction band of the prepared material to produce superoxide radicals, activate persulfate and further prevent the recombination of photoelectrons and holes. Superoxide radicals and singlet oxygens were dominant radicals for iohexol degradation. Besides, persulfate could act as electron acceptor to enhance efficiency of electron transfer. The interaction between sulfate, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals improved singlet oxygens production. Furthermore, theoretical calculation and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry were performed to analyze degradation pathway of iohexol in the system. Ultimately, the BCCN/light/PS system can provide a new method to degrade organic pollutants in aquatic environments.

Due to the carcinogenicity of atrazine, the effective removal of atrazine in water and soil has become the focus of attention. In the paper, the advanced oxidation technology based on sulfate radicals ( S O 4 · - ), which the visible light catalysis and nanocatalyst Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 synergistically catalyzed to yield S O 4 · - , was constructed to efficiently degrade and remove atrazine. The Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 was prepared through a simple solvothermal method, and its microstructure and composition were characterized by SEM and XRD. A series of experiments were carried out to degrade atrazine by Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 activation of peroxymonosulfate under visible light, which revealed that the degradation efficiency reached to 78.5 percent in 35 min, CO 3 2− had a significant inhibitory effect on the degradation of atrazine in coexisting ions of NO 3 -, SO 4 2− , Cl- and CO 3 2− , the e -, ⋅OH, and S O 4 · - were mainly active species. Combined with density function theory calculations of Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 , the high-efficiency degradation of atrazine was due to the synergetic enhancement between photocatalysis and Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 catalyst in the constructed catalytic system.

Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen generation is a significant pathway for sustainable energy conversion and production. The photocatalysts with a Z-scheme water splitting charge transfer pathway is superior due to the good separation and migration ability of photoexcited charge carriers. Herein, Co3O4/g-C3N4photocatalysts with Z-scheme charge transfer pathway were successfully constructed by an electrostatic interaction-annealing method. The as-prepared Co3O4/g-C3N4ultra-thin nanosheets were tested and analyzed by XRD, EA, ICP, SEM, TEM, AFM, XPS, UV-Vis DRS, PL and photoelectrochemical measurements. Moreover, the influences of fabrication parameters on performance of Co3O4/g-C3N4catalysts were investigated, and 0.5% Co3O4/g-C3N4exhibited the optimal activity. Based on the characterization and catalytic performance, the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway of Co3O4/g-C3N4was established and put forward. To further improve the catalytic performance of Co3O4/g-C3N4, 0.5% Pt was added as a co-catalyst. The obtained Pt/0.5% Co3O4/g-C3N4was recyclable and remained the original catalytic water splitting performance within 20 h. The modification of Co3O4and Pt improved the separation and migration of e−and h+, and induced the increased hydrogen evolution rate of g-C3N4.Keywords:Co3O4/g-C3N4ultra-thin nanosheets;Z-scheme charge transfer pathway;photocatalytic;water splitting;H2evolution

In this study, to improve peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-mediated visible-light photocatalytic performance of g-C 3 N 4 in antibiotics degradation and elucidate its mechanism, an ultrathin Co 3 O 4 nanomeshes/g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets 2D Z-scheme heterojunction composite (x% Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 ) was successfully prepared calcining the mixtures of MOF-Co ultrathin nanosheets and g-C 3 N 4 . This unique nanomeshes/nanosheets structure with large SSA (153.92 m 2 /g) possessed an abundance of accessible active sites and large area intimate interfaces between Co 3 O 4 and g-C 3 N 4 , thus remarkably promoting the separation and transport of charge carriers. The as-prepared optimal 10% Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 composites exhibited excellent degradation efficiency toward tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation and were further enhanced with the addition of PMS. The mechanism of the enhanced TC degradation in Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 /Vis/PMS system was investigated in detail based on the characterization of the catalysts, TC degradation efficiency assessment, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) quenching results. The TC degradation pathway was proposed based on the intermediates identified by the gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC–MS) measurements. This study provides a facile and promising path for the remediation of contaminated water via PMS mediated photocatalysis over highly active g-C 3 N 4 -based catalysts.

Efficient, stable, and reusable composite of Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 with abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) were successfully constructed using a facile grinding and calcination method. The catalytic performances of OVs-enriched Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of phenanthrene (PHE) and their underlying mechanisms were investigated. The catalytic activity of xCo 3 O 4 -C 3 N 4 with OVs was significantly greater than that of Co 3 O 4 -C 3 N 4 without OVs, and there was a substantial positive correlation between the degradation rate constant of PHE and the OVs content in xCo 3 O 4 -C 3 N 4 . Quenching experiments and EPR tests demonstrated that 1 O 2 is the dominant active species in the 2.0Co 3 O 4 -C 3 N 4 /PMS system, which differs from the radical-dominated activation pathway of conventional cobalt-based heterogeneous catalysts . The results indicate that the OVs introduction in the catalyst can effectively modulate the PMS activation pathway, and the proposed non-radical systems can achieve efficient degradation of PHE. In addition, the synergistic interaction between the redox cycle of Co 2+ /Co 3+ and the electron-rich O-C 3 N 4 carrier favored the degradation of PHE via the radical pathway. This study provides a new theoretical basis and reference for the facile preparation of PMS catalysts and even envision this approach may open new vistas in the application of non-radical systems in refractory organic pollutant treatment.

This study presents a novel Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 functionalized ceramic membrane (Co-CN-M) for emerging contaminants removal by integrating visible-light photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate oxidation. The membrane was fabricated via in-situ growth of ZIF-67 on g-C 3 N 4 -modified substrates followed by calcination. The Co-CN-M overcomes the conventional trade-off between reactivity and permeability, simultaneously achieving outstanding degradation efficiency ( k = 0.24 min −1 for bisphenol A) and ultrahigh water flux (724 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ). This exceptional performance stems from: (1) the p-n heterojunction at g-C 3 N 4 /Co 3 O 4 interface that enhances charge transfer and Co 2+ /Co 3+ cycling, promoting h + /O 2 ·− -dominated degradation; and (2) a unique honeycomb morphology that facilitates mass transfer via enhanced surface properties and internal nanochannels. Application viability was also demonstrated by excellent antifouling and self-cleaning properties (>70 % flux recovery) and stable long-term (96 h) operation in surface water with minimal cobalt leaching (<0.007 mg·L −1 ). This work offers valuable insights into metal-organic framework (MOF)-based functional membrane fabrication for effective water purification.

In this work, Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 catalyst with highly efficient adsorption and degradation of antibiotics was developed based on the combination of three-dimensional (3D) porous morphological controls of g-C 3 N 4 and the loading of Co 3 O 4 quantum dots (Co 3 O 4 QDs). It was discovered that the catalyst can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) through a non-photochemical path, and a high tetracycline elimination rate of 99.7% can be achieved within 18 min. The characterization and density functional theory calculation results demonstrated that the porous 3D structure can not only promote the substrate adsorption reaction but also provide large surface area and countless exposed active sites for catalytic reaction . The introduction of Co 3 O 4 QDs lowered activation energy barrier and lead to high energy of PMS adsorption. More efficient charge migration between the catalyst and PMS further accelerated PMS activation. Thus, leading to the excellent catalytic performance. In addition, non-free radical mediated degradation mechanism of catalytic activity was also proposed. This work provides a scheme for designing novel and efficient PMS activators for the removal of abusive antibiotics from aqueous environments.

Water pollution is a significant social issue that endangers human health. The technology for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water can directly utilize solar energy and has a promising future. A novel Co3O4/g-C3N4type-II heterojunction material was prepared by hydrothermal and calcination strategies and used for the economical photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) in water. Benefitting the development of type-II heterojunction structure, the separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes in 5% Co3O4/g-C3N4photocatalyst was accelerated, leading to a degradation rate 5.8 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4. The radical capturing experiments and ESR spectra indicated that the main active species are •O2−and h+. This work will provide possible routes for exploring catalysts with potential for photocatalytic applications.Keywords:photocatalyst;type-II heterojunction;carrier separation;photodegradation

Electrocatalytic dehalogenation provides an efficient and sustainable strategy for cleaving carbon-halogen bonds, yet its practical efficiency is often limited by insufficient catalytic activity alongside inherent mass transfer constraints. To address this challenge, this study focused on both the catalyst and reactor levels. Herein, a non-noble metal catalyst, oxygen vacancy-rich Co 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 (O v -CoCN), was developed and integrated into a flow-through reactor for efficient electrocatalytic reductive dehalogenation, which significantly enhanced mass transfer and reaction kinetics. Using the halogenated antibiotic thiamphenicol (TAP) as the target pollutant, the system demonstrated outstanding degradation efficiency under continuous-flow operation. Under optimal conditions with a catalyst loading of 7.1 mg/cm 2 , pH 5, a flow rate of 2 mL/min, and a current density of 7 mA/cm 2 , nearly complete removal of 10 mg/L TAP was achieved. The introduced oxygen vacancies, engineered to modulate the electronic structure of CoCN, played a critical role in facilitating electron transfer and promoting the generation of the key reactive species, atomic hydrogen (H*). The catalyst exhibited excellent application potential, maintaining high removal efficiency across a broad pH range (3−11) and pollutant concentrations (1–50 mg/L), and showed remarkable stability over a 12-h continuous operation. This work provides new insights into the design of both reactors and catalysts for efficient electrocatalytic dechlorination.

The construction of heterostructured energy storage and conversion with special morphology has the potential to be an up-and-coming area of research. In this study, we designed and synthesized a Co₃O₄/g-C₃N₄ heterostructured electrode material with a distinctive morphology using a multistep fabrication approach. The heterojunction formed between Co₃O₄ and g-C₃N₄ induces interfacial charge redistribution, resulting in a built-in electric field that facilitates efficient electron transfer and enhances the electronic structure. Furthermore, the engineered morphology, comprising nanocages and hollow tubes, significantly increases the number of electrochemically active sites. The optimized electrode achieved an impressive specific capacity of 921.8 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , along with excellent cycling stability, retaining 82.88 % of its initial capacity after 10,000 cycles. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor constructed with Co₃O₄/g-C₃N₄ as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode demonstrated a stable and high energy density of 36.3 Wh kg −1 .

Cobalt is an interesting candidate to catalytically convert CO2 gas to value-added chemicals through a thermal hydrogenation reaction. However, its catalytic activity and long-term stability are strongly hindered by its dispersion and phase state. In this work, we deeply investigate the dispersion and reduction behavior of a Co3O4 nano-sized catalyst and precisely optimize its catalytic properties in CO2 hydrogenation by modulating the dispersion and metal–support interactions. Finally, it achieves a stable CO2 conversion of 28% with CH4 selectivity above 85% during a 30 hour longevity test. The improvement is attributed to the strengthened metal–support interaction between Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and the g-C3N4 carrier, which stabilizes the active metallic Co species and significantly boosts catalytic activity and durability. This study provides valuable insights into the structural requisites for optimizing CO2 hydrogenation catalysts and offers a feasible strategy for designing efficient non-noble metal catalysts for CO2 utilization.

The disastrous pollution resulting from antibiotics may traverse extensive distances through water, presenting a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems and human well-being. The catalyst-assisted heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has emerged as an intriguing technology for purifying such wastewater. Herein, we have designed cobalt tetroxide anchored over graphitic carbon nitride (Co 3 O 4 -g-C 3 N 4 ) catalysts through an impregnation and high-temperature calcination technique for the effective degradation of moxifloxacin (MOX) antibiotics from wastewater. The experiments revealed that the MOX degraded completely in 21 min in the Co 3 O 4 -g-C 3 N 4 /PMS system with a degradation kinetics constant of 0.1858 min −1 , faster than the Co 3 O 4 /PMS under optimal conditions ([Co 3 O 4 -g-C 3 N 4 ] = 0.5 g/L, [PMS] = 0.5 mM, [MOX] = 20 mg/L, pH = 6.3). Specifically, the higher degradation of MOX in the Co 3 O 4 -g-C 3 N 4 /PMS system can be credited to the larger surface area (97.22 m 2 /g) of the Co 3 O 4 -g-C 3 N 4 catalyst in comparison to the Co 3 O 4 (69.08 m 2 /g), which enhanced the accessibility of catalytic active sites and improved the PMS activating process. Further, the impression of varied operating factors and intervening anions on MOX abatement was also scrutinized. The production of reactive oxygen species was verified using quenching experiments and further validated by electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. The mechanistic degradation pathways of MOX were anticipated through the acquisition of degradation by-products. The mechanistic insight revealed that the PMS activation was caused by the transitions of Co 3+ /Co 2+ pairs in the reaction system. Overall, this study sheds new insights for subsequent research into the catalytic mechanism of heterogeneous catalysts utilizing PMS activation to degrade organic pollutants.
