In this work, Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 was successfully synthesized using a microwave-assisted method [Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 (MW)] and employed as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for bisphenol A removal. A reference catalyst was prepared using the same preparation conditions but different heating mode and labeled as Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 (CH). The series of Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 was characterized using XRD, SEM, and N 2 adsorption to detect their crystallinity, morphology, and surface area, among others. Results indicated that both microwave and calcination significantly affected the characteristic and catalytic activity of the catalyst. Moreover, the microwave-irradiated catalyst calcined at 300 °C showed higher catalytic activity and mineralization percentage for BPA degradation than the conventionally heated catalyst calcined at the same temperature. Microwave temperature and microwave time of the proposed microwave-assisted method were also investigated. Compared with other catalysts, the present catalyst showed considerably superior preparation time and degradation efficiency. This study broadens a new horizon for advanced oxidation process using a PMS activator.

A novel Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 catalyst was synthesized by a microwave-assisted co-precipitation method and systematically characterized with multifarious techniques to investigate its crystallinity, morphology and chemical state of Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 . The catalytic activity of Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was assessed through bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. The results indicated that the catalyst synthesized by microwave irradiation and calcination treatment of 200 °C exhibited good stability, high catalytic activity and mineralization percentage of BPA degradation under a broad pH range in the Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 /PMS system. The BPA degradation in aqueous solution of 20 mg·L −1 reached almost 100% within 30 min by using 0.3 g·L −1 of catalyst and [PMS]/[BPA] = 5 at pH ranging from 3.0–9.0. The activation energy ( E a = 50.59 kJ·mol −1 ) was calculated under different reaction temperatures, indicating that the catalytic reaction occurred easily in the Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 /PMS/BPA system. According to the characterizations of catalyst, as well as the dissolving and trapping studies, it was illustrated that BPA molecules were degraded mainly by the surface-bound SO4 − radicals. At the same time, the increase of cobalt (III) content was caused by the catalytic reaction between PMS and cobalt (II) on the surface of catalyst. Overall, the study could lay groundwork toward the catalyst-activated peroxymonosulfate-based oxidation system in wastewater treatment.

In this study, a novel Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 catalyst was synthesized using a microwave-assistant method, and the corresponding characteristics were studied through XRD, SEM, and N 2 adsorption. As a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator, the catalytic activity of the synthesized catalyst was evaluated on Bisphenol A (BPA) removal, and the result showed that Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 catalyst promoted BPA degradation, where 100% BPA was degraded within 15 min under the condition of [catalyst] = 0.1 g·L −1 and [PMS]/[BPA] molar = 5. The Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 /PMS system presented a good catalytic activity when the solution pH varied from 3.0 to 11.0. Under the different concentrations of various inorganic anions in the Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 /PMS system, Cl − showed an inhibited effect at low concentration and a promoted effect at high concentration. CO 3 2− showed a slight inhibited effect, while H 2 PO 4 − showed a considerable inhibited effect. Additionally, both NO 3 − and SO 4 2− showed a negligible effect on BPA removal. For the real water bodies, both the drinking water and tap water showed a slight decrease in degradation efficiency of BPA but a distinctly negative effect on BPA mineralization, which might be contributed to the competition between BPA and indigenous organic matters in the two water matrices for their oxidation by radical species. The quenching experiment was enforced and it was found that both SO 4 − and OH on the surface-bound of catalyst were the main active radicals in this system. Overall, the Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 catalyst as a PMS activator is a promising catalyst in PMS activation for sulfate radical-based wastewater treatment.

Nickel foam (NF)-functionalized Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 nanoparticles (CBO@NF) synthesized using a facile one-step microwave-assistant method were employed as catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with bisphenol A (BPA) as the target pollutant. The crystallinity , morphology, and chemical valence state of the synthesized CBO@NF were analyzed using XRD, SEM , and XPS, respectively. Moreover, effects of the preparation parameters, including the calcination temperature and calcination time as well as the loading dosage, were evaluated in detail. A degradation efficiency of 95.6% was achieved within 30 min with the optimal degradation system. The CBO@NF/PMS system shows great catalytic activity in a pH range from 3.0 to 11.0. The stability and reusability of the CBO@NF supported catalyst was evaluated through a recycling experiment. In addition, the possible degradation mechanism was also explored using a quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection. The result shows that both the surface-bound SO 4 − and OH play significant roles during the degradation process, where the electron transfer of Co 2+ /Co 3+ , Bi 3+ /Bi 5+ , and Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ realizes the sustained regeneration of the active radicals. This work provides new insight for the practical applications of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) in wastewater treatment .

A hierarchical Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 composite was first prepared via an adsorption-calcination method using a bismuth-based MOF (Bi-BTC) as the precursor and substrate. In the composite, Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles are loaded on the outer layer of Bi 2 O 3 rods derived from Bi-BTC and show a uniform honeycomb-like morphology. In dyes degradation tests, the Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 composite exhibits much better peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation performance in RhB degradation than pure Bi 2 O 3 or Co 3 O 4 . The Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 /PMS system also shows high performance for various azo dyes and maintains good catalytic performance at wide pH range. Besides, the good chemical stability of Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 ensures it good reusability in four recycling tests. XPS and electrochemical analysis indicate the interaction of Bi species promotes the activation capacity of Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The results of radicals quenching tests and ESR analysis reveal the singlet oxygen and superoxide radicals are the dominant functional radical species in Co 3 O 4 -Bi 2 O 3 /PMS system and subsequently a reasonable activation mechanism is proposed.
