Porous sphere-like tricobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4)–cobalt chloride hydrate (CoCl2·6H2O, CCH) heterojunctions are obtained using a one-step facile solution combustion route. The heterostructure is confirmed by XRD, HRTEM, and XPS measurements. Their photocatalytic performances are evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and the reduction removal of Cr(VI) ions under visible light irradiation. The heterojunction containing 81.5 wt% Co3O4 and 18.5 wt% CCH exhibits the highest photocatalytic performance, for which the pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant is 10.0 and 8.7 times that of pure Co3O4 towards MO degradation and Cr(VI) reduction, respectively. This enhancement in activity can be attributed to the effective electron transfer from the conduction band of Co3O4 to that of CCH, which is verified with a double increase of the photocurrent valve of the heterojunction sample electrode in comparison with the bare Co3O4 sample electrode. Electron paramagnetic resonance, fluorescence spectrophotometry and scavenger experiments indicate that photo-induced holes, and hydroxyl and superoxide anion radicals are the active species responsible for the photo-oxidation of MO. The reasons for the formation of these species are discussed and proposed based on the band gap structures of Co3O4 and CCH. The recycling experiment results indicate that the activity can be regained by a remedial experiment.
In this work, the effects of the coupling between montmorillonite and CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O on pyrolysis behavior, products distribution and characteristics of liquid fuel were investigated by the combination of pyrolysis experiment and kinetic analysis. The mass fraction of the MMT in oil shale was 3–9%, and the mass fraction of CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O was 10–25%. The results showed that the coupling effect promoted the formation of shale oil. The maximum yield of shale oil (17.75 wt%) was obtained at 20CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O5MMT. Catalytic pyrolysis behavior and kinetic analysis indicated that the presence of CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O and montmorillonite led to the prominent advance of kerogen decomposition temperature and the decrease of apparent activation energy. Significantly, the addition of the 20CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O5MMT led that the average apparent activation energy was decreased by about 122.42 kJ/mol compared to the catalyst-free pyrolysis. The strong cracking ability produced by their coupling effect was considered to be the main reason. Montmorillonite and CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O enhanced the decarboxylation and free-radical reaction, resulting in a decrease of acids yield and an increase of aliphatic hydrocarbons yield. The relative content of aliphatic hydrocarbons increased from 41.55% to 51.27%. These results demonstrated that the combined use of montmorillonite and CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O was beneficial to the generation of saturated hydrocarbon production.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are well-known as novel solvents due to their unique properties, which are indispensable for the development of green chemistry in the future. CoCl2·6H2O and NiCl2·6H2O-based DESs, which could be called magnetic DESs (MDESs) for short in view of their responsive behavior to an external magnetic field, have been widely used in many industrial applications, such as biomass treatment, electrolytes, and material preparation. For better application and full-scale development of these MDESs in various fields, eleven MDESs were prepared in this work by using CoCl2·6H2O and NiCl2·6H2O as hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) with alcohols, carboxylic acids and amides as hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), respectively. The intermolecular interactions between the components of MDESs were characterized via FTIR, 1H NMR and DSC analysis. In addition, physicochemical properties including density, viscosity, conductivity, ionicity, pH values, surface tension, thermostability and solvatochromic parameters were investigated. All MDESs exhibit acid characteristics and have good conductivity comparable with ionic liquids (ILs) and other DESs used for electrolytes. The results show that stronger H-bonding networks in Ni-based MDESs make them have higher density, viscosity, polarity and surface tension values than Co-based MDESs. Moreover, all prepared MDESs possess a good conductivity behavior which could be comparable to that of common organic solvents and ILs. According to this work, we could better comprehend the behavior of Co/Ni-based MDESs and choose the appropriate one for particular applications.
