Transition metal phosphides and selenides hold immense promise for advancing energy storage technologies. However, sluggish reaction kinetics and limited rate performance present major challenges to large-scale energy storage. Herein, a highly tunable metal–organic framework (MOF) template was employed to design CoNiP@CoNiSe through a strategy that integrates both nanostructures and heterostructures. The nanosheet structure enables rapid electron and ion transport while providing abundant electroactive sites, which in turn improves electrical conductivity and specific capacity. Furthermore, the heterostructure between CoNiP and CoNiSe optimizes the electronic structure of the host material, facilitating OH– adsorption and desorption, accelerating electron transfer and enhancing the efficiency of redox processes. Benefiting from the structural advantages and synergistic effects, the obtained CoNiP@CoNiSe electrode showcases a high specific capacity of 931 C g–1, an ultrafast rate capacity (652 C g–1 at 30 A g–1, 70% retention) and outstanding long-term cycling durability, with a capacity retention of 83% after 10,000 cycles. Beyond that, when configured in an asymmetric supercapacitor setup as CoNiP@CoNiSe//AC, it attains a notable energy density of 47.3 W h kg–1, coupled with a robust power density of 266.7 W kg–1. Moreover, the configuration maintains an impressive 78% of its capacitance even after enduring 10,000 cycles. This innovative approach to heterostructure construction offers a valuable blueprint for elevating the electrochemical performance of transition metal-based electrodes in supercapacitor applications.

Efficient and low-cost catalysts for the hydrolysis of Ammonia borane (AB) are highly required for the hydrogen economy. Here we report a highly efficient CoNiP nanobox on graphene oxide (GO) for the hydrolysis of AB. By modulating the electronic structure of Co in the catalyst with small amount of doped Ni (1.7 wt%), the hydrolysis activity can be significantly enhanced up to 4 times of the original activity. The CoNiP/GO catalyst can thus achieve a remarkable TOF value of 134.6 (H 2 ) mol/((Cat-metal)mol·min), which is one of the best values ever reported for noble metal-free catalysts. The catalyst also shows a low activation energy of 44.12 kJ/mol and a good durability of 84.6% after five cycles. Synchrotron radiation based X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that the high performance can be mainly attributed to the slightly modulated chemical state of Co, which is suitable for the hydrolysis reaction. The favorable nanobox morphology and GO support also contribute to the high performance.

The development of highly active and robust OER catalysts is the key to address the constraints on the efficiency of electrocatalytic water splitting technology. Herein, CoNi-pristine was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method, further phosphorylation treatment and construction of heterojunctions to synthesize efficient oxygen evolution catalysts. The OER catalytic performance of the material was greatly enhanced by the advantages of proper self-supporting 3D morphology, formation of heterogeneous interfaces and the synergistic effect of CoNiP and NiFe LDH. In 1 M KOH, CoNiP@NiFe LDH/NF only requires an overpotential of 207 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and operates at high current densities for more than 120 h without significant decay. It provides assistance for the rational design of interface-engineered heterostructures based on the synthesis of OER catalysts with high catalytic activity.

Electron spin polarization plays a vital role on photocatalysis but rarely considered. Herein, a double-layer hollow yolk-shell Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructure photocatalyst is prepared via two ion exchanges approach using Co-MOF as a template. It shows ferromagnetic characteristics and obvious photothermal effect due to the special structure. Interestingly, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is enhanced about twice under external magnetic field compared to field-free. The improvement can be ascribed to the enhanced electron spin polarization of the vacancy defects for Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructure and the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions promoting efficient photogenerated charge separation and prolonging the lifetimes obviously. The special double-layer hollow yolk-shell superstructure is another reason for the optimized photocatalytic performance, which could expose adequate surface active sites for photocatalytic reaction. Moreover, the high stability of this defective Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructure indicates the potential applications in field of photocatalysis. This strategy may provide new insights for fabricating high-efficient superstructure photocatalysts with electron spin polarization.

A novel porous amorphous-crystalline heterostructured CoNiP nanowire arrays ((a-c)CoNiP/CC) is presented. TEM observations and compositional calculations revealed ≈14.5% of the amorphous regions (a-CoNiP) are interleaved in the crystalline regions (c-(Co 3.6 Ni 0.4 )P 4 ), forming massive amorphous-crystalline heterogenous interfaces composed of the same elements. Only 38 and 64 mV overpotentials for the (a-c)CoNiP/CC catalyst are required to reach the current density of −10 mA cm 2 in acid and alkaline electrolyte, respectively, which is very close to the overpotentials (35 and 55 mV) of the commercial Pt/C HER catalyst. The theoretical calculation revealed that the (a-c)CoNiP/CC has a completely different enhancement mechanism of HER reaction in acid-base electrolytes. In particular, due to the natural corrosion resistance of the amorphous interface, the HER performance of this catalyst under the high current density condition is much better than that of the Pt/C catalyst either in acidic or in alkaline, suggesting its prospect for commercial applications.

Cost-effective metal-based electrocatalysts are desirable for industrial water and seawater electrolysis, triggering the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with high efficiency. Here, we report the loading of ultralow-content Ru-Os dual-atom onto NiCoP nanoneedles significantly enhancing HER in seawater splitting. The localization of 0.16% Ru and 0.58% Os atoms within NiCoP induces changes in the electronic structure and coordination environment of the Ni active sites. This catalyst achieves low overpotentials (29 and 303 mV in alkaline solution, 68 and 331 mV in alkaline seawater) at 10 and 800 mA/cm 2 , respectively, demonstrating remarkable stability by maintaining performance at 500 mA/cm 2 for 24 h in alkaline and simulated seawater. Experimental and theoretical studies indicate that ultralow content Ru and Os dual atoms are immobilized on the surface of NiCoP/NF through Ru-P and Os-P bonds, leading to electron transfer and changes in the coordination environment. These results enhance the activity of Ni active sits on support, demonstrating superior HER performance in alkaline solution and seawater. Ultralow content Ru and Os dual atoms in NiCoP@Ru-Os/NF play a crucial role in reducing the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption and lowering the d -band position of the catalyst, thereby accelerating the HER kinetic.

In this work, a kind of three-dimensional (3D) needle branch-like array nanostructured PANI/CoNiP hybrid electrode self-supported on nickle foam (NF) is explored. This 3D needle branch-like array nanostructured PANI/CoNiP–NF electrode can not only expose more activity sites but also effectively capture protons from hydrated ions to form protonated amino groups due to abundant lone pair electrons in the nitrogen of PANI. The as-synthesized nanostructured PANI/CoNiP–NF electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding catalytic activity, achieving 10 mA cm–2 current density at a lower overpotential of 61 mV. Density functional theory calculation shows that the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH*) of PANI/CoNiP is lower than that of CoNiP, further proving theoretically that polyaniline (PANI) can accelerate the hydrogen evolution reaction kinetic process and improve the catalytic activity, which is consistent with the experimental results. Especially, the Ni site of PANI/CoNiP has the lowest Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH*) of −0.059 eV, close to 0, providing a basis for designing and preparing materials, that is, to expose the crystal planes with more Ni active sites as much as possible, thus improving the catalytic performance of the PANI/CoNiP materials.

Developing efficient, robust and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalyst with high activity and strong stability for overall water splitting has received extensive attention. Herein, a 3D porous nanoflower spherical catalyst Co 6 Ni 4 P/NF was synthesized by one-step pulse electrodeposition, and regulating morphology of nanostructure through tuning the ratio of Co 2+ and Ni 2+ in the planting bath. This morphology combined the superiorities of the 3D spherical and the 2D film structures, which not only retain a large specific surface area, but also ensure the high-density of active sites. The as-prepared Co 6 Ni 4 P/NF only needs overpotentials of 336 mV and 373 mV to reach the large current density 1000 mA cm −2 for HER and OER and shows long-term stability under alkaline condition. Meanwhile, to drive overall water splitting requires only the cell voltages of 1.56 V, 1.61 V and 2.19 V to reach 50, 100 and 1000 mA cm −2 . In this work, the influence of catalyst morphology is discussed specifically, and we find the nanoflower spherical Co 6 Ni 4 P/NF presents the best performance compared with nanospheres and nanosheets in overall water splitting process, which is appealing to practical application at large current condition.

Rational construction of self-template catalysts for efficient electrolytic water splitting reactions is being a challenging prospect in sustainable energy production. For the first time, owing to these aims, we report a self-template representation of self-assembled iron-modulated cobalt-nickel phosphide (Fe-CoNiP) grown on 3D-nickel foam (NF) using a facile amine hydrolysis-approached synergetic phosphorylation strategy. Due to its unique vertically standing self-template hierarchical nanoarrays and atomic modulated multicomponent system, these Fe-CoNiP nanoarchitectures exhibit excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions with very low applied overpotentials of 110 and 280 mV to obtain 10 mA cm–2, respectively, and an overpotential value of 390 mV (J10) obtained for overall water splitting overtakes most precious-metal/phosphide-based electrocatalysts in an alkaline medium. Moreover, the rationally cocrystallized Fe-CoNiP binder-free electrocatalyst as a multifunctional electrode has robust physicochemical stability above 2 days with very little degradation during alkaline electrolysis. These demonstrated results may lead to new insights into constructing an alternative electrocatalyst with hierarchical nanoarchitecture to boost the overall water splitting.

The industrial application of powder-based catalytic electrodes is heavily restricted by powder shedding, inhibition of active sites, and poor long-term stability. Herein, a porous titanium carbonitride (TiC 0.5 N 0.5 ) ceramic substrate with open straight finger-like holes is first made by a simple approach of phase-inversion tape-casting and pressureless sintering, and then a Co x Ni 1- x P active layer is in situ formed by a hydrothermal technique and phosphorization to achieve integrated Co x Ni 1- x P/TiC 0.5 N 0.5 self-supported ceramic electrodes. Electrochemical tests reveal that the optimized Co 0.9 Ni 0.1 P/TiC 0.5 N 0.5 electrode exhibits overpotentials of 76.5 and 79.8 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , Tafel slopes of 47.3 and 40.5 mV dec −1 , in 0.5 m H 2 SO 4 and 1 m KOH, respectively. Furthermore, its superior long-term stability and resistance to corrosion can be achieved for more than 20 h in both media at 100 mA cm −2 . In addition, the Co 0.9 Ni 0.1 P/TiC 0.5 N 0.5 electrode has much better performance than Pt/C at high current density in neutral media. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the Ni substitution of 1/10 Co in CoP leads to the more optimal |Δ G H* | among the Co x Ni 1- x P catalysts. Compared with other CoP or NiP-based electrodes, the Co 0.9 Ni 0.1 P/TiC 0.5 N 0.5 electrode benefits from high strength, unique pore structure, tight and compatible bonding, and high hydrophilicity.

This study investigated a novel electrocatalyst with a core–shell structure of CoNiP@N,P-C. The unique carbon shell of this catalyst serves a dual purpose: exposing numerous active sites and safeguarding CoNiP nanoparticles from dissolution caused by the electrolyte. As a result, the CoNiP@N,P-C nanoparticles exhibit exceptional electrochemical properties. The CoNiP@N,P-C catalyst displays overpotentials of 234 and 314 mV for the HER and OER, respectively, within a simulated seawater solution (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl), indicating its outstanding catalytic performance. Moreover, when subjected to full seawater splitting, the CoNiP@N,P-C catalyst exhibited high activity, achieving a 1.71 V cell voltage at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. As revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the CoNiP@N,P-C catalyst exhibits Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH* = −0.19 eV) that is decreased in comparison with CoP@N,P-C, NiP@N,P-C, and N,P-C (−0.321 eV, −0.434 eV, and 0.723 eV, respectively). This finding confirms that the core–shell structure plays a role in enhancing the HER kinetics and improving the catalytic performance, which is consistent with the experimental observations. Consequently, this study introduces the concept of utilizing bimetal phosphide core–shell structures for overall seawater splitting, offering a novel approach in this field of research.

Electronic structure and morphology modulation are challenging for the construction of efficient electrocatalysts towards water splitting. Herein, a facile hydrothermal strategy and subsequent phosphorization process are utilized to synthesize urchin-like CoNiP integrated by nanowires. The synthesized urchin-like CoNiP can be applied as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline, neutral, and acidic media. In particular, the optimal urchin-like CoNiP exhibits superior HER activity in alkaline electrolytes, with small overpotentials (157, 317, and 437 mV) at the current density 10, 100, and 200 mA cm−2, respectively, and a small Tafel slope (49.6 mV dec−1) in 1 M KOH, which is comparable to that of Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, when urchin-like CoNiP is employed as both the cathode and anode in 1 M KOH, a low cell overpotential of 490 mV is required to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2, suggesting the efficient electrocatalyst toward overall water splitting. The superior performance of urchin-like CoNiP can be associated with the sharp-tip enhancement effect since the hierarchical structure composed of nanowires with high curvature tips benefits the accumulation of electrons on the tip of the nanowires to serve as effectively active sites for reactions and the mass transfer, as well as the fast electron transfer due to the good electrical conductivity of the bimetallic phosphide. This work opens up a promising approach to rationally construct low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting.
