Development of non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are of great significance under alkaline electrolytes for overall water splitting. In this work, CoP/FeP has been designed and constructed in situ on carbon fiber paper by using the bimetallic metal organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesis strategy. The heterogeneous CoP/FeP displays excellent catalytic activities in both HER and OER of the fully hydrolyzed semi-reaction. Remarkably, CoP/FeP is applied as the bifunctional electrode in anode and cathode to construct an overall water splitting apparatus, resulting in the low cell voltage and excellent stability. The exceptional electrocatalytic performance may be mainly attributed to the heterogeneous interface, which constructs a built-in electric field to provide electron to Co with electron-rich structure, resulting in the strong adsorption of H and weak adsorption of O 2 on Co. This study provides an effective and controllable method for the design of self-supporting bimetal phosphide catalysts.

Graphical A CoP−FeP heterostructure catalyst with abundant P vacancies (Vp−CoP−FeP/NF) on nickel foam is constructed through impregnation and phosphorization. It demonstrates excellent hydrogen evolution performance and has practical application prospects in high-current overall water splitting. The catalyst‘s unique hierarchical nanosheet structure, plentiful P vacancies and synergistic effect of CoP and FeP accelerate HER kinetics, resulting in its superior performance. The development of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts with high performance under large current density is still a challenge. Introducing P vacancies in heterostructure is an appealing strategy to enhance HER kinetics. This study investigates a CoP−FeP heterostructure catalyst with abundant P vacancies (Vp−CoP−FeP/NF) on nickel foam (NF), which was prepared using dipping and phosphating treatment. The optimized Vp−CoP−FeP catalyst exerted prominent HER catalytic capability, requiring an ultra-low overpotential (58 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 ) and displaying robust durability (50 h @ 200 mA cm −2 ) in 1.0 M KOH solution. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated superior overall water splitting activity as cathode, demanding only cell voltage of 1.76 V at 200 mA cm −2 , outperforming Pt/C/NF (−) || RuO 2 /NF (+) . The catalyst‘s outstanding performance can be attributed to the hierarchical structure of porous nanosheets, abundant P vacancies, and synergistic effect between CoP and FeP components, which promote water dissociation and H* adsorption and desorption, thereby synergically accelerating HER kinetics and enhancing HER activity. This study demonstrates the potential of HER catalysts with phosphorus-rich vacancies that can work under industrial-scale current density, highlighting the importance of developing durable and efficient catalysts for hydrogen production.

The sluggish redox reaction kinetics and “shuttle effect” of lithium polysulfides (LPSs) impede the advancement of high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Transition metal phosphides exhibit distinctive polarity, metallic properties, and tunable electron configuration , thereby demonstrating enhanced adsorption and electrocatalytic capabilities towards LPSs. Consequently, they are regarded as exceptional sulfur hosts for LSBs. Moreover, the introduction of a heterogeneous structure can enhance reaction kinetics and expedite the transport of electrons/ions. In this study, a composite of hollow CoP-FeP cubes with heterostructure modified carbon nanotube (CoFeP-CNTs) was fabricated and utilized as sulfur host in advanced LSBs. The presence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) facilitates enhanced electron and Li + transport. Meanwhile, the active sites within the heterogeneous interface of CoP-FeP suppress the “shuttle effect” and enhance the conversion kinetics of LPSs. Therefore, the CoFeP-CNTs/S electrode exhibited exceptional cycling stability and demonstrated a capacity attenuation of merely 0.051 % per cycle over 600 cycles at 1C. This study presents a highly effective tactic for synthesizing dual-acting transition metal phosphides with heterostructure, which will play a pivotal role in advancing the development of efficient LSBs.

Reasonably designing and constructing transition metal based compounds with controllable composition and structure is a promising option for obtaining economically efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. This paper presents a one-pot self-templated epitaxial growth, phase transition and self-dissolution strategy for constructing hollow nanoboxes/solid nanocubes of CoFe bimetallic Prussian blue analogues (PBAs). The CoFe mixed phosphide with a porous hollow nanoboxes structure obtained after subsequent phosphating heat treatment exhibite enhanced OER electrocatalytic activity in alkaline media, exhibiting a low overpotential of 230 mV and a Tafel slope of 35.5 dec −1 at 10 mA cm −2 , as well as excellent stability for 48 h. The excellent OER activity of CoP-FeP nanoboxes (CoP-FeP NBs) can be attributed to the combination effect between their composition and structure. Structurally, the exquisite porous hollow nanoboxes structure greatly expands the surface area, reduces ion diffusion pathways, and reduces charge transfer resistance. Compositionally, the inner transition metal phosphide exhibits good conductivity and undergoes surface reconstruction during OER, forming high valence Co(Fe)OOH active substances in situ. The strong interface coupling effect of CoOOH/FeOOH optimizes the electronic structure. This work presents a facile and efficient strategy for the construction of PBAs hollow structural materials and the exploitation of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts.

Slow mass transport and charge transfer restrict the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of FeP. Herein, we synthesized Fe-based bimetallic Prussian blue analogues (CoFe, NiFe, and CuFe-PBAs), and further prepared nitrogen-doped carbon anchored FeP-based heterostructures namely CoP-FeP/NC, Ni 2 P-FeP/NC, and Cu 3 P-FeP/NC using template-assisted and phosphating annealing strategies. It is worth noting that CoP-FeP/NC shows a hollow nanocubic structure, shortening the ion transport pathway and facilitating surface atom exposure, thus improving reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the similar atomic radius of Co and Fe promotes the formation of stable CoP-FeP heterointerfaces with the same crystal system components and low lattice mismatch, inducing the electron transfer from Co to Fe and generating more low-valent Fe cations, thereby enhancing activity. Besides, Co and Fe sites underwent surface reconstruction into CoOOH and FeOOH active species, therefore achieving efficient synergistic electrocatalytic OER. As a result, CoP-FeP/NC exhibits superior OER activity (254 mV@10 mA cm −2 ) than Ni 2 P-FeP/NC and Cu 3 P-FeP/NC in 1.0 M KOH solution, even exceeds commercial RuO 2 (266 mV@10 mA cm −2 ), and presents no obvious performance decay (11.26 %) after continuous electrolysis at 100 mA cm −2 for 100 h, showing practical application prospects. Our work provides a general approach for preparing efficient and stable FeP-based heterostructures as OER electrocatalysts.
