MOF-derived CoP/C catalyst for efficient dibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization

Liang-Liang Zhang,Kai-Xuan Yang,Cai-Long Xue,Wan-Xi Li,Bo-Qiong Li,Yi-En Du,Yong-Qiang Chen,Ya-Jie Liu

The design of an active and sulfur-resistant catalyst for dibenzothiophene (DBT) hydrodesulfurization (HDS) in crude oil purification is highly desirable but remains a grand challenge. Here, two carbon-supported cobalt phosphide catalysts Co 2 P/C and CoP/C, and a reference sample Co/C are successfully synthesized using a metal–organic-frameworks (MOFs) precursor. A P/Co ratio dependence on crystal phases is found, leading to the formation of two pure-phase cobalt phosphide catalysts CoP/C and Co 2 P/C. Catalyst evaluation in HDS of DBT shows that the CoP/C catalyst exhibits a higher activity and stability than Co 2 P/C and Co/C, giving a 93.7 % DBT conversion with 100 h stability under 3 MPa and 380 ◦C. Moreover, a 67.4 % biphenyl yield characterizes the dominance of the direct desulfurization (DDS) pathway. The obtained catalytic performance over the CoP/C catalyst is also superior to the published cobalt phosphide catalysts. Multiple characterization techniques co-evidence that the copious specific surface area, efficient electron transport from Co to P, high thermal stability of Co nanoparticles (NPs), and strong sulfur resistance account for the enhanced catalytic performance of CoP/C. The findings of this report suggest that phosphorus-modified cobalt over the carbon support can act as a promising catalyst for the HDS of DBT.

Improving the electrocatalytic property of CoP for hydrogen evolution by constructing porous ternary CeO2-CoP-C hybrid nanostructure via ionic exchange of MOF

Laifei Xiong,Jinglei Bi,Liqun Wang,Shengchun Yang

Developing cheaper but efficient electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are highly desirable for the sustainable energy conversion techniques. The nanostructured CoP has been proved to be one of the most efficient non-noble metal HER catalyst. However, to further improve their performance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is still a challenging task. In the present work, we prepare the nanohybrid CeO 2 -CoP-C catalyst with high porosity through a co-ionic-exchange with Co and Ce ions using the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as template followed with a low-temperature phosphorization route. The high porosity of the catalysts is conductive to the diffusion and mass transfer of the reactants on the catalyst surface . Meanwhile, the doping of rare earth (RE) element modulates the electronic structure of the CoP nanoparticles , and the carbon skeleton left over from the annealed MOF is beneficial to the electronic conduction in the catalyst. Electrochemical tests showed that the ternary CeO 2 -CoP-C/CC hybrid nanostructure presented overpotential of 71 mV at 10 mV cm −2 (η 10 ), which is much higher than that of the binary CoP-C/CC catalysts (i.e., 132 mV). In addition, the ternary catalyst also presented a superior long-term durability in an acidic electrolyte. This work opens up a potential strategy for designing more efficient CoP-based catalysts toward electrochemical water splitting.

Fe-CoP/C composite nanoplate derived from 2D porphyrin MOF as an efficient catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Ying-Xia Du,Lian Liu,Yong-Ke Li,Rui Liu,Wang-Ting Lu,Ji-Xiang Wang,Geng Zhang,Fei-Fei Cao

The preparation of two-dimensional (2D) composite material consisting of an active metal-based phase and carbon matrix is still a challenge. Herein, the 2D bimetal Co-TCPP(Fe) metal–organic framework (MOF) is synthesized and then adopted as the precursor to prepare a 2D composite electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). After carbonization and phosphorization, the 2D MOF is transformed into a composite nanoplate formed by Fe-doped CoP nanoparticles and a carbon matrix (Fe-CoP/C). This Fe-CoP/C composite exhibits a favorable OER performance in 1 M KOH with a low overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which is better than that of counterparts without Fe and 2D morphology. The in situ formed metal (oxy)hydroxide is considered to be the main active species for the OER. The improved OER performance of Fe-CoP/C could be attributed to the Fe-doping in Co (oxy)hydroxide as well as the high electrochemical surface area induced by the 2D nanoplate morphology and conductive carbon network.

Constructing Chainmail-Structured CoP/C Nanospheres as Highly Active Anodic Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Yang Nan,Tianpeng Liu,Wenhao Liu,Dong Cao,Daojian Cheng

Constructing highly active and noble metal-free electrocatalysts is significant for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, uniform carbon-coated CoP nanospheres (CoP/C) are developed by a direct impregnation coupling phosphorization approach. Importantly, CoP/C only takes a small overpotential of 230 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm–2 and displays a Tafel slope of 56.87 mV dec–1. Furthermore, the intrinsic activity of CoP/C is 21.44 times better than that of commercial RuO2 under an overpotential of 260 mV. In situ Raman spectroscopy studies revealed that a large number of generated Co–O and Co–OH species could facilitate the *OH adsorption, effectively accelerating the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the carbon shell with a large number of mesoporous pores acts as the chainmail of CoP, which could improve the active surface area of the catalyst and prevent the Co sites from oxidative dissolution. This work provides a facile and effective reference for the development of highly active and stable OER catalysts.

Morphology-controlled synthesis of hollow spherical and sea urchin-like CoP/C composites via sodium citrate regulation for pseudocapacitive lithium storage

Jie He,Wei Xiong,Fupeng Liu,Zhicong Ni,Lin Zeng,Jiaming Liu,Xue Li

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have emerged as promising high-capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their practical application remains constrained by the dual challenges of intrinsic low conductivity and structural degradation during cycling. In this study, CoP/C composites with hollow spherical (denoted as s-CoP/C) and sea urchin-like (u-CoP/C) morphologies were synthesized in a morphology-controlled manner using sodium citrate as a structure directing agent, aiming to elucidate the structure-performance relationship in lithium storage. Systematic characterization reveals the hollow spherical architecture of s-CoP/C effectively enhances charge transfer kinetics and buffered volume variations during cycling, outperforming its u-CoP/C counterpart. As a result, s-CoP/C delivered a stable reversible specific capacity of 527.5 mAh g −1 after 600 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Kinetic analysis demonstrates a dominant pseudocapacitive contributes of 85.6 % at a sweep rate of 1.5 mV s −1 . In addition, robust interfacial chemical bonding between CoP and carbon matrix through C–P and Co– O –C linkages ensures structural integrity during prolonged cycling. This work establishes a synergistic strategy combining morphological engineering with interfacial optimization to develop durable TMP-based anodes for advanced energy storage systems.

MOF nanosheet-derived carbon-layer-coated CoP/g-C3N4 photocatalysts with enhanced charge transfer for efficient photocatalytic H2 generation

Yan Ma,Dianjun Chi,Yuping Tao,Shengjun Liu,Lei Dong,Yu Chen,Lifang He,Kui Zhang

Catalysts with low cost, high efficiency, and no need for precious metal cocatalysts are the key to realizing the maximum utilization of solar energy-efficient hydrogen (H2) production. In this study, a series of graphitic carbon nitride-derived catalysts (g-C3N4/CoP@C) were successfully obtained by in situ phosphating of g-C3N4/Co-BDC. A CoP@C cocatalyst developed with Co-BDC nanosheets as precursors can accelerate the H2 generation of g-C3N4. The close interface between CoP@C and g-C3N4 increased the electron–hole separation efficiency. Moreover, the CoP@C surface carbon accelerated electron transfer and increased the light absorption range. The prepared g-C3N4/CoP@C composite material exhibited H2 production capability up to 1968 μmol g−1 (3 h), approximately 129.9 times that of g-C3N4. Therefore, the CoP@C cocatalyst is proposed as an alternative to non-precious metal cocatalysts based on the findings of the study.

Co engineered CoP catalyst for photochemical CO2 reduction with accelerated electron transfer endowed by the space-charge region

Yong Xu,Ping Wang,Di Tian,Man Zhang,Weili Dai,Jianping Zou,Shenglian Luo,Xubiao Luo

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has been regarded as an ideal method to simulate photosynthesis for achieving carbon neutralization. However, poor charge transfer efficiency limits its development. Herein, an efficient Co/CoP@C catalyst was prepared with compact contact of Co and CoP layer by using MOF as precursor. At the interface of Co/CoP, the difference in functionality between the two phases may result in uneven distribution of electrons, thus forming a self-driven space-chare region. In this region, spontaneous electron transfer is guaranteed, thus facilitating the effective separation of photogenerated carriers as well as boosting the utilization of solar energy. Furthermore, the electron density of active site Co in CoP is increased and more active sites are exposed, which promotes the adsorption and activation of CO 2 molecules. Together with suitable redox potential, low energy barrier for *COOH formation and easy desorption of CO, the reduction rate of CO 2 catalyzed by Co/CoP@C is 4 times higher than that of CoP@C.

Oxygen-coordinated MOF membrane facilitated construction of supported Co2P/CoP@C heterostructures for water electrolysis

Chongxi Zhang,Fengting Li,Dong Wu,Qingmeng Guo,Zhanning Liu,Zhikun Wang,Zixi Kang,Lili Fan,Daofeng Sun

Integration of cobalt phosphides (Co2P and CoP) in a carbon matrix shows great promise for developing high-performance catalysts for water electrolysis. Nevertheless, the controlled synthesis of these two phases with an effective interface, uniform dispersion, and a simplified synthesis process is still challenging. Herein, we proposed a strategy that involves pre-construction of the Co/CoO@C heterostructure followed by post-conversion by phosphorization to achieve the precise synthesis of the Co2P/CoP@C heterostructure, which was realized by utilizing a MOF as the self-sacrificial template. The oxygen-coordinated MOF that shows advantages in building the Co/CoO heterostructure was employed in this work and grown into a high-quality membrane via cathodic electrodeposition on the graphite substrate (Gss). The obtained catalyst (Gss-Co2P/CoP@C-800) requires 146 and 365 mV overpotentials to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2 for the HER and OER, respectively, and 1.54 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for water electrolysis. Beyond the significantly enhanced conductivity that originates from the robust interaction between the MOF and Gss, the establishment of an effective Co2P/CoP interface also plays a pivotal role in contributing to the high performance of Gss-Co2P/CoP@C-800. As revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the unique d-orbital electron distribution of Co2P/CoP and the enhanced state density near the Fermi level facilitate its efficient electron transport and render the Co2P/CoP heterostructure region a crucial active site for water electrolysis. This study will provide new insights into the rational design and construction of heterostructures based on MOFs for efficient and green energy conversions.

Ultrathin 2D flower-like CoP@C with the active (211) facet for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting

Xiaowei Shi,Ping Yang,Yongyong Cao,Chao Dai,Weiqing Ye,Lingxia Zheng,Zhefei Zhao,Jianguo Wang,Huajun Zheng

Designing non-noble-metal electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and stability towards hydrogen evolution reaction is vitally necessary for the demands of renewable and clean energy sources. Herein, an advanced water reduction electrocatalyst with a two-dimensional (2D) morphology based on CoP embedded on the surface of nanocarbon (CoP@C) is fabricated, which is derived from 2D Co-MOF by low-temperature phosphorization. Benefiting from the unique 2D morphology as well as more exposed (211) facet, such electrocatalyst exhibits superior catalytic activity in both alkaline and acid media in comparison to the traditional three-dimensional (3D) structure CoP@C with the overpotentials of 127 and 236 mV for HER at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Density functional theory simulations unveil that the binding energies of the adsorbed intermediate species become more appropriate on the (211) facet compared with that on the (011) facet. This could improve the dissociation of H2O and desorption of H*, and thus facilitate the electrocatalytic activity. Moreover, the 2D electrocatalyst demonstrates enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction performance compared with its 3D counterparts. When the 2D CoP@C is employed as both the anode and cathode, a potential of 1.67 V is required to achieve the 10 mA cm−2 current density. In addition, it still exhibits good durability and even continued to work for 50 h.

Hierarchical Microcables Constructed by CoP@C⊂Carbon Framework Intertwined with Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient Lithium Storage

Kangkang Guo,Baojuan Xi,Ruchao Wei,Haibo Li,Jinkui Feng,Shenglin Xiong

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs)-based electrode materials with high capacity have attracted considerable interest as a promising anode material for lithium−ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a hierarchical cable-like structure composed of CoP@C core−shell nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in one-dimensional (1D) porous carbon framework intertwined with N-doped carbon nanotubes (CoP@C⊂PCF/NCNTs) is synthesized by a self-templating, self-catalytic, and subsequent vapor-phase phosphorization strategy. The unique nanoarchitecture regime provides multiple advantages. The 1D carbon framework allows for quick ion and electron access, maintaining the integrity and accommodating the volume change of the structure during repeated discharging/charging. The internal carbon shell can prevent the direct aggregation of CoP NPs on cycling. The external NCNTs on the surface supply a staggered conductive network to promote electrolyte penetration and charge transportation. Impressively, the as-fabricated hybrid nanocables deliver a reversible capacity of 712 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 for over 700 cycles with excellent rate capability as an anode material for LIBs. The significantly improved lithium storage properties of CoP@C⊂PCF/NCNTs reveal the importance of reasonable design and engineering of novel hierarchical structures with higher complexity.

CoP/C composites synthesized by an in situ phosphorization method as high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Xinyue Zhang,Fulei Liu,Jiachang Zhao,Jun Jin

Because of their great capacity to store lithium, cobalt-based phosphides are utilized as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, in practice, they are prone to capacity fading and volume expansion, which restrict their long-term use. Herein, a simple method was proposed to prepare CoP nanoparticles encapsulated in a Co-MOF-71 derived carbon layer (CoP/C). The carbon in the composites greatly improved the cycling stability and rate capability of CoP/C when compared with pure CoP. CoP/C exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 823 mA h g−1, a cycling durability of 338 mA h g−1 over 100 cycles, a good initial coulombic efficiency of ca. 76%, and an excellent rate capability (1 A g−1: 318 mA h g−1 and 2 A g−1: 284 mA h g−1).
