To develop continuous broadband emission near-infrared (NIR) phosphors compatible with blue LED chips, numerous Cr 3+ -Yb 3+ co-doped phosphors have been synthesized. However, the emission spectra of Cr 3+ vary significantly across different matrix materials, while Yb 3+ maintains a relatively stable emission spectrum. This variation leads to notable luminescence depressions between 850 and 900 nm in many Cr 3+ -Yb 3+ co-doped phosphors. To address this emission spectrum gap, we utilized Cr 3+ as a sensitizer and introduced Nd 3+ as the luminescence center within the La 3 Sc 2 Ga 3 O 12 matrix material, establishing a Cr 3+ -Nd 3+ energy transfer channel. Under 480 nm excitation, we tuned emission peaks at 800 nm (Cr 3+ ) and 881 nm (Nd 3+ ). The stable NIR emission of Nd 3+ effectively compensates for the missing spectrum in Cr 3+ -Yb 3+ co-doping. The Cr 3+ -Nd 3+ energy transfer process was thoroughly analyzed using diffuse reflection spectrum, excitation spectrum, and fluorescence decay curves. The LSGO:0.125Cr 3+ , 0.03Nd 3+ compound with the best optical performance was packaged with a 480 nm LED chip to create a NIR light source. At a working current of 10 mA, it achieved a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 9.45 %, demonstrating its potential for applications in non-destructive detection and luminescence thermometry. This work presents a novel strategy for tuning NIR spectral distribution and developing continuous broadband NIR phosphors.

Near-infrared (NIR) mechanoluminescence (ML) holds significant promise for in vivo biomechanical detection and imaging due to its self-powered excitation and self-recovery capabilities. However, its broader application remains constrained by the limited availability of suitable ML materials and the narrow spectral range of NIR emission. In this study, we report the Y 3 Ga 5 O 12 (YGO): Cr 3+ , Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ /polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) NIR-ML composite with broadband NIR emission tunable from 600 to 1100 nm, covering both the NIR-I and NIR-II windows. The ML of composite device is driven by an interfacial triboelectric effect arising from the mechanical interaction between the inorganic particles and the polymer matrix. Comparative studies on photon penetration through biological tissues reveal that co-doping with Nd 3+ and Yb 3+ markedly enhances tissue penetration depth. Specifically, the luminescence decay rate in biological tissues is reduced by 20.8% relative to Cr 3+ single doping, indicating improved optical persistence and signal transmission. These findings demonstrate the potential of full-spectrum NIR-ML devices for high-resolution, deep-tissue biomechanical sensing and imaging. This work provides a generalizable design strategy for the development of broadband NIR-ML materials tailored for in vivo mechanical diagnostics.

Tuning the luminescence properties of efficient near-infrared (NIR) phosphors is critical to expanding their applications in NIR spectroscopy. In this paper, a series of novel Cr 3+ -doped LaZnAl 11 O 19 (LZAO: Cr 3+ ) phosphors are synthesized via a high-temperature solid-phase method. These phosphors exhibit NIR emission in the range of 650–900 nm, with the LZAO: 0.10Cr 3+ achieves an excellent internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 89.9 %. Notably, it demonstrates excellent thermal stability, maintaining 97.2 % of the initial photoluminescence intensity at 513 K. Through co-doping with Nd 3+ , the NIR emission broadens across the 650–1100 nm range, and leads to a substantial enhancement in Nd 3+ emission intensity due to efficient Cr 3+ →Nd 3+ energy transfer. Remarkably, the optimum LZAO: Cr 3+ , Nd 3+ phosphor exhibits a high IQE (82 %) and an outstanding anti-thermal quenching behavior (118.0 % @ 513 K), with the underlying mechanism of its thermal stability further elucidated through defect level model. In addition, the synthesized phosphors show great promise for multifunctional applications in NIR phosphor-converted light emitting diodes, plant growth lighting, non-destructive testing, luminescence thermometry and solar cells.

Persistent luminescence nanophosphors (PLNPs) emitting in the second near-infrared window (1000–1700 nm, NIR-II) are emerging as one promising class of in vivo bio-imaging agents due to their unique advantages including non-autofluorescence and low optical scattering in tissues. Currently, it remains a great challenge to synthesize nanosized lanthanide-doped inorganic NIR-II phosphors with a good persistent luminescence performance. Herein, we present a salt microemulsion method for synthesizing Ce3+, Cr3+, Nd3+ codoped Y3(Al/Ga)5O12 nanocrystals, which generate multi-wavelength persistent luminescence in the visible (∼508 nm, 5d1 → 4f of Ce3+), the first near-infrared window (∼890 nm, 4F3/2 → 4I9/2 of Nd3+) and NIR-II (∼1063 nm, 4F3/2 → 4I11/2 of Nd3+) regions. Under illumination of a 410 nm diode (3 W) for 10 min, the observed duration time of NIR-II persistent luminescence is as long as 60 min at room temperature. Moreover, the persistent luminescence can be excited efficiently by multiple excitation sources including a blue diode, white LEDs and an X-ray generator, which is crucial for deep tissue imaging applications. By comparing the penetration depth between NIR-I and NIR-II persistent luminescence through chicken breast, we prove that NIR-II photons exhibit a deeper optical penetration length (3.9 mm) than that of the NIR-I ones (2.5 mm). In addition, the NIR signals can still be detected 3 min after ceasing the excitation source by a small animal imaging system (InGaAs detector) when the thickness of the covering chicken breast is 20 mm. These results show great promise for Y3(Al/Ga)5O12:Ce3+,Cr3+,Nd3+ nanocrystals as a PLNP for bio-imaging applications with deep penetration depth and a high signal-to-noise ratio.
