The existence of energy transfer channels from the self-trapped exciton (STE) emission to lanthanide (Ln3+) ions in double perovskites (DPs) opens up new possibilities for high security anti-counterfeiting applications. In the present investigation, we synthesized Sb3+/Ho3+/Er3+ doped Cs2NaGdCl6 rare-earth-based DPs using a simple solvothermal method, whose luminescence could be quenched by water and restored after drying. The efficient down-shifting (DS) red emission from the 4f–4f transition of Ho3+ was enhanced 8-fold due to the energy transfer of STEs → Ho3+ ions via Sb3+ sensitization. The DS and up-conversion (UC) dual-mode multicolor emissions were obtained by further introducing Er3+. Specifically, the DS luminescence of the tri-doped sample under the UV region and that under 448 nm irradiation were white and red, respectively; and the UC luminescence under 980 nm irradiation was green. In view of their stimulus response to water and dual-mode multicolor luminescence properties, advanced anti-counterfeiting materials based on the obtained samples were designed.

Single-host white light-emitting diodes with good stability and simple fabrication methods have attracted extensive attention from researchers. In this study, Cs2NaGdCl6:Sb3+ with blue emission is synthesized by introducing Sb3+ into Cs2NaGdCl6. After doping Tb3+ into Cs2NaGdCl6:Sb3+, the sample achieves a tunable ion emission from blue to green. The energy transfer relationship between Sb3+ and Tb3+ is explored. White phosphors with CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.33) are obtained by introducing Ho3+ into Cs2NaGdCl6:Sb3+/Tb3+ double perovskites. This work provides a new option for white light emission of halide perovskites doped with Ln3+.

The realization of white light emission in a single matrix has always been a problem that researchers are working on. As a new luminescent material, lead-free halide double perovskites(DPs) has made this idea possible due to its wide emission spectrum. However, the drawback of low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) originated from self-trapping excitons (STEs) has seriously hindered their development and applications. In this study, we focused on Cs 2 NaGdCl 6 (CNGC) DP nanocrystals, and enhanced the STEs, corresponding to the much developed blue emission intensity at about 470 nm by introducing Sb 3+ , associated with the significant increase of PLQY up high to 90.09 % at the optimal doping level. To achieve the all-spectrum white light within this phosphor, the lack wavelengths at green and red region has to be compensated and Sm 3+ is an ideal candidate. Therefore, the spectrum of CNGC:Sb 3+ was expanded via further co-doping Sm 3+ and consequently the emission color is tuned from blue to white contributed by the effective energy transfer from STEs to Sm 3+ . Finally, an UV-excited LED device based on CNGC:Sb 3+ /Sm 3+ phosphor was fabricated and strong white light emitting was achieved. The CIE of the device coordinates in the cold white region of (0.33, 0.30), associated with the color temperature of 5794 K. All the results indicate that the CNGC:Sb 3+ /Sm 3+ phosphor possesses great potential in the application of full spectrum lighting as prominent single-component white light emitter.

Lead-free halide perovskites are highly appealing for optoelectronic applications due to their non-toxic nature and exceptional optical properties. In this study, we report the co-doping of Sb 3+ and Sm 3+ in the rare-earth-based double perovskite Cs 2 NaGdCl 6 . The incorporation of Sb 3+ ions effectively tunes the electronic structure, achieving a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of up to 87.9 %. The Sb 3+ /Sm 3+ -co-doped Cs 2 NaGdCl 6 exhibits excitation wavelength-dependent emission characteristics, transitioning from blue emission under 260 nm excitation to white emission under 365 nm excitation. Furthermore, the Sb 3+ /Sm 3+ -co-doped Cs 2 NaGdCl 6 material demonstrates advanced multifunctional applications in light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and fluorescence anti-counterfeiting technologies. These findings hold significant implications for the utilization of rare-earth-based double perovskites in optoelectronic devices.

Efficient and versatile materials that are both non-toxic and environmentally sustainable have become paramount in our pursuit of greener and more durable illumination solutions. In this study, we investigated the optical properties of rare-earth-based all-inorganic perovskite (AIP) crystal Cs2NaGdCl6 (CNGC) with various substitutions to explore its potential applications in lighting devices. The primitive crystal CNGC exhibits intrinsic blue emission due to its self-trapped excitons (STEs) but singly-doping with Bi3+ ions results in weak blue emission, indicating quenching of the STE emission. Alloying by introducing Ag+ ions into the CNGC:Bi3+ lattice, replacing the Na+ ions, caused the disruption of the crystal field symmetry, which lifts the parity-forbidden selection rule and allows for s–p transitions of the Bi3+ ions. Thus, the co-doping with Ag+ ions in addition to Bi3+ leads to intense broad-band warm white emission covering a wide spectral range of 470–800 nm, with a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4512 K and a color rendering index (CRI) of 79. The findings from this study provide valuable insights for the development of efficient and high-quality lighting devices using a simple technique.

In lead-free halide double perovskites, doping and alloying are key strategies for optical performance enhancement. However, achieving stable full-spectrum white emission in single-component phosphors remains challenging. Herein, high-quality single-phase white emission is realized in Cs2NaGdCl6 via Sb3+/Tb3+/Mn2+ codoping. Pristine Cs2NaGdCl6 shows a weak sky-blue emission, while Sb3+ doping significantly enhances the self-trapped exciton (STE) intensity. Density functional theory calculations show that Sb3+ doping creates new sensitizing states, boosting the STE emission. Under Sb3+ sensitization, STE energy transfers to Tb3+ and Mn2+. The incorporation of Tb3+ elevates the photoluminescence quantum yield from 0.66% (pristine) to 68.38% (CNGC: Sb3+, Tb3+), while the broadband red emission from Mn2+ plays a critical role in achieving full-spectrum coverage. Tunable white-light emission is achieved via a dopant ratio optimization. Combining the phosphor with a 340 nm commercial light-emitting diode chip produces a white light-emitting diode with a correlated color temperature of 4658 K and a color rendering index of 91.9. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra confirm ratiometric sensing capability, yielding maximum relative sensitivities (Sr) of 1.06%/K (I463 nm/I608 nm) and 1.12%/K (I548 nm/I608 nm) at 298 K. These results demonstrate that this material exhibits multifunctional application potential in the fields of white-light illumination, optical thermometry, and fluorescent anticounterfeiting.

The rare-earth based double perovskites (DPs) can effectively solve the poor controllability of lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ) doping concentrations in traditional double perovskites. In this study, we reshape the UV excitability of Er 3+ by constructing an energy transfer (ET) channel from STE to Er 3+ in the rare-earth based Cs 2 NaGdCl 6 DPs, achieving efficient green emission with the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 82.78 %. Excitingly, high-sensitivity temperature measurement within the temperature range of 303–430K is achieved based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR). The maximum relative sensitivities S R (I 526 nm /I 552 nm ) and S R (I 526 nm /I 460 nm ) of Cs 2 NaGd 0.965 Cl 6 : 0.005Sb 3+ , 0.03Er 3+ reach 1.11 % K −1 and 0.90 % K −1 , respectively, indicating that Cs 2 NaGd 0.965 Cl 6 : 0.005Sb 3+ , 0.03Er 3+ is promising optical temperature sensing material. Furthermore, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) device was fabricated using Cs 2 NaGd 0.965 Cl 6 : 0.005Sb 3+ , 0.03Er 3+ and commercial red phosphor CaAlSiN 3 : Eu 2+ with a 365 nm chip, which exhibited a color rendering index (CRI) of 95.1, a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4989 K, and CIE coordinates of (0.3443, 0.3397). This work broadens the application of rare-earth based Cs 2 NaGdCl 6 DPs.
