The ever-increasing counterfeiting issues have triggered a research upsurge in multi-modal fluorescence anti-counterfeiting materials. All inorganic metal halide double perovskites possess the advantages of facile preparation procedures and high thermal stability, which also provide suitable doping sites to regulate the emission behavior and highlight the potential for serving as multi-modal fluorescence anti-counterfeiting materials. Herein, a series of Sb 3+ , Er 3+ , and Yb 3+ solely or codoped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 are successfully prepared, and the optical properties are dependent on the doping ratio of Sb 3+ and lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ). Notably, due to the participation of energy-transfer and cross-relaxation processes, the tri-doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 (0.3%Sb 3+ -20%Er 3+ -50%Yb 3+ -Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 ) shows luminescence responses to the excitation sources with different photon energies, which is employed to construct anti-counterfeiting fluorescence patterns by combining the Sb 3+ , Er 3+ , and Yb 3+ solely or codoped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 . Besides the multi-modal luminescence behavior, NIR emission from Er 3+ and Yb 3+ can be used in the night-vision device. Remarkably, the 20%Er 3+ -doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 shows an excellent light yield of 30767 photons MeV −1 and low limit of detection (LoD) of 108 nGy s −1 , highlighting the potential in X-ray imaging. This work provides a rational route to design multi-functional materials that can be used in anti-counterfeiting, night vision, and X-ray imaging.

Currently, lanthanide (Ln 3+ ) doped double perovskites (DPs) suffer from poor controllability of doping and the high concentration quenching phenomenon. Herein, a novel efficient energy transfer (ET) host of Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 Rare-earth-based (RE-based) DPs via Ag + /Bi 3+ co-doping for further Ho 3+ doping is developed. Benefiting from Ag + /Bi 3+ - manipulated the parity of the wavefunction of the self-trapped exciton, intense self-trapped excitons (STEs) broadband warm white visible emission is boosted. Specifically, photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of co-doping with Bi 3+ and Ag + ions in Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 under 350 nm excitation is dramatically promoted to 86.19 % with half maximum (FWHM) of 224 nm. Although the pristine crystal Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 exhibits intrinsic blue emission with FWHM of 75 nm. Furthermore, the ET channel from STEs to Ho 3+ was constructed by tri-doping Ho 3+ , and the effective red and near-infrared (NIR) emission of Ho 3+ was obtained. Finally, NIR light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and white LED based on Ho 3+ doped/undoped Cs 2 Na 0.8 Ag 0.2 Lu 0.98 Bi 0.02 Cl 6 DPs were prepared with different application features. Specifically, white LEDs showed higher color rendering index and lower associated color temperature, while NIR LEDs showed good night vision imaging. This work provides a new strategy for the design of an ET host suitable for Ln 3+ doping, avoiding the effects of the concentration quenching phenomenon that always occurs in heavily doped hosts and realizing controllable doping.

Lead-free double perovskites (LFDPs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to their distinctive optical characteristics. While multi-component phosphor blends dominate commercial white light-emitting diode (WLED), the pursuit of efficient white light generation from a single crystalline lattice has yet to overcome critical bottlenecks in emission harmonization. In this study, we present a triple-doped rare-earth double perovskite, Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : Sb 3+ , Tb 3+ , Sm 3+ . We pioneer a competitive energy transfer engineering strategy in this material, in which orchestrated energy routing from Sb 3+ to Tb 3+ and Sm 3+ enables precise spectral harmonization. This overcomes the long-standing efficiency-color quality trade-off in single-matrix WLEDs, which can be precisely controlled via dopant ratio optimization. Both steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used to investigate the synthesis and luminescence behavior of the triple-doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : Sb 3+ , Tb 3+ , Sm 3+ . Analysis of the PL spectra reveals three key energy transfer mechanisms: (i) Sb 3+ → Tb 3+ , (ii) Sb 3+ → Sm 3+ , and (iii) Tb 3+ → Sm 3+ . Temperature-dependent PL spectra demonstrate exceptional thermal stability, and the luminous intensity decreases by only 8.8 % at high temperatures of 473 K. By fine-tuning the dopant concentrations, precise control over the CIE coordinates within the white-light region is achieved, driven by competitive energy transfer dynamics. In addition, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) reaches 38.29 % in a Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 Single Crystal (SC) co-doped with 0.5 % Sb 3+ , 60 % Tb 3+ , and 25 % Sm 3+ . When incorporated into WLED devices, these phosphors deliver a color rendering index (CRI) of 94.7, a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5018 K, and a near-ideal white light emission with CIE coordinates of (0.344, 0.338). This work provides a high-performance single-matrix white light emitter for WLEDs and a practical energy transfer design strategy for rare-earth-doped LFDPs, promising to advance lead-free perovskite applications in solid-state lighting.

Presently, there is a need to expand the near-infrared (NIR) emission range, especially in the bio-transparent window, to improve the internal quantum efficiency and external quantum efficiency, and to minimize the shortcomings of luminescence properties. In this work, an ultra-broadband NIR emission Cr3+-doped Cs2NaLuCl6 all-inorganic metal halide perovskite phosphor was synthesized by a grinding–sintering method. Under 300 nm excitation, Cs2NaLuCl6:Cr3+ phosphors exhibited ultra-broadband NIR emission of 800–1400 nm, which covers nearly the entire NIR-I (700–1000 nm) and NIR-II (1000–1400 nm) regions; the emission peaked at around 960 nm, with a full width at half maximum of ∼182 nm. Noticeably, the internal- and external-quantum efficiencies of the optimized Cs2NaLuCl6:Cr3+ phosphor were as high as ∼92.9% and ∼60.75%, respectively. We showed through analysis and simulation that the weak crystal field strength is conducive to increasing the odd term of the crystal field, and therefore it partially released the restriction imposed by the parity prohibition law and improved the energy absorption efficiency of Cr3+. As the size of the phosphor approaches the wavelength of NIR luminescence, the apparent Mie scattering effect starts to take effect, which enhances the light extraction of NIR luminescence in the radial direction.

Wide band emission has aroused widespread focus in various fields such as display, plant lighting, and solar cells due to its spectral continuity. Here, a series of Sb 3+ /Mn 2+ doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 double perovskites with wide blue and red emissions were synthesized through a precipitation method. Enhanced self-trapped exciton (STE) emission and red emission of Mn 2+ ion are achieved by doping Sb 3+ ion to construct energy transfer channels. The temperature dependent fluorescence spectra exhibit that the emission intensity at 418 K remains 66.4% of that at 298 K in Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : 1% Sb 3+ , 10% Mn 2+ microcrystal. Importantly, the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of STE and Mn 2+ ion emissions show obvious broadening as the temperature increases, which is attributed to the enhanced electron-phonon interaction. The optical temperature sensing method based on FWHM of STE and Mn 2+ emissions is designed, the corresponding maximum relative sensitivity ( S r ) values are 0.14% at 298 K and 0.61% at 448 K, respectively. Furthermore, due to the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) between STE and Mn 2+ ion is highly temperature-dependent, the temperature sensing based on FIR technique is investigated. The maximum S r values reach 1.31% K −1 at 448 K under 317 nm excitation. The minimum temperature resolution ( δT ) is calculated as 0.26 K at 448 K. The dual-mode temperature measurement methods based on FWHM and FIR can achieve more accurate remote temperature measurement. These results indicate the microcrystal has potential application in the fields of optical temperature thermometry.

Incorporating rare-earth (RE 3+ ) ions into lead-free halide double perovskites represents a promising strategy for modulating their optical properties through energy transfer mechanisms. In this study, Dy 3+ ions were successfully incorporated into Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 :Sb 3+ double perovskites via a facile hydrothermal method. The synthesized crystals not only exhibit intense blue emission originating from self-trapped excitons (STEs) but also display effective Dy 3+ characteristic emissions, thereby broadening the emission spectrum from the visible to the near-infrared region. The energy transfer from STEs to Dy 3+ is confirmed and extends across various RE 3+ ions. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra reveal insights into the excitation and emission processes, as well as thermal quenching mechanism. Additionally, the characteristic emissions of Dy 3+ demonstrate varied anti-thermal quenching behaviors, indicating the remarkable thermal stability of the synthesized crystals. The thermally coupled sub-levels of Dy 3+ ions are employed to develop optical thermometers with notable sensitivity. Finally, the light-emitting diodes fabricated by encapsulating the optimized samples onto commercial chips highlight the great potential of Dy 3+ -doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 :Sb 3+ materials for photoelectric applications.

Developing efficient near-infrared (NIR) luminescence materials is crucial for next-generation NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs). Cr 3+ -activated materials exhibit broadband NIR emission, however, they suffer from low efficiency and severe thermal quenching at wavelengths beyond 900 nm. To overcome these drawbacknd Membrane Technology, School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Sun Yat-sen Uns, an efficient energy transfer pathway from Cr 3+ to Ln 3+ (Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ ) in Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 (CNLC) double perovskite single crystals was established. The Cr 3+ singly doped crystal shows broadband NIR emission peaking at 970 nm with an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 73.1%. Through effective Cr 3+ sensitization, the NIR-II emissions at 996 nm (Yb 3+ ) and 1222 nm (Tm 3+ ) are enhanced, along with the significantly improved luminescent thermal stability. Moreover, the co-doped system also exhibits superior IQE of 86.6% for CNLC:3 mol%Cr 3+ ,9 mol%Yb 3+ and 71.6% for CNLC:3 mol%Cr 3+ ,5 mol%Tm 3+ . The developed crystals integrated into a 540 nm-driven NIR LED delivers a NIR radiation power of 80.4 mW at a driving current of 600 mA, enabling high-resolution bioimaging and night vision applications. This work provides insight into energy transfer engineering to boost the luminescent efficiency and thermal stability in NIR-emitting materials.

Lead-free halide double perovskites are attractive luminescent materials owing to their low toxicity and structural stability, but their white-light performance is often limited by weak long-wavelength emission and inefficient energy regulation. Herein, Sb 3+ single-doped and Sb 3+ , Mn 2+ co-doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 phosphors were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Sb 3+ introduces broadband blue emission associated with localized excited states, while Mn 2+ incorporation produces orange-red emission through the 4 T 1 → 6 A 1 transition. The coexistence of these two emission components enables tunable dual-emission and single-host white-light generation. Time-resolved PL analysis confirms the shortening of the Sb 3+ -related lifetime after Mn 2+ incorporation, and the energy-transfer efficiency reaches 31.25% for the optimized Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : 0.005Sb 3+ , 0.05Mn 2+ sample. Temperature-dependent PL and Arrhenius analysis reveal improved thermal-quenching resistance, with the activation energy increasing from 0.13777 to 0.21293 eV. The optimized phosphor-based WLED exhibits neutral-white emission with CIE coordinates of (0.3287, 0.3565), a CCT of 5688 K, and a CRI of 72.4. These results provide insight into emission regulation and energy-transfer dynamics in Sb 3+ , Mn 2+ co-doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 phosphors for proof-of-concept white-light and optical anti-counterfeiting applications.

All-inorganic lead-free halide double perovskites (HDPs) with unique soft lattice structure have attractive photoluminence (PL) from self-trapping excitons (STEs). However, pristine HDPs suffer from low PL quantum yiled and narrow color gamut, collectively hindering their applications. Here, heavy metal ion Sb 3+ is introduced into rare-earth-based Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 HDPs to enhance the blue emission intensity of STEs and the mechamism is illustrated through DFT calulation. Then lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ = Er 3+ , Ho 3+ ) are added in blue light emissive Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : Sb 3+ and typical green and red light emission can be obtained via the energy transfer (ET) from STEs to Er 3+ and Ho 3+ , respectively. Luminescence chromaticity modulation and white emission is achieved by adjusting the doping content of Ln 3+ . Leveraging the distinct thermal responses of STEs and Er 3+ emissions in Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : Sb 3+ , Er 3+ , a dual-mode fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometer is proposed by integrating non-thermally coupled energy levels (NTCL) and thermally coupled energy levels (TCL) of STEs and Er 3+ . The dual-mode FIR thermometer exhibits pronounced chromaticity variation (CIE Δy = 0.072) with temperature range from 294 to 473 K, elevated sensitivity (S r = 1.24 %) at 293 K and better repeatability test, demonstrating its application for high-precision visualized optical temperature sensing.

The ability to regulate the luminescence in rare earth-activated materials via photo-stimulation plays a pivotal role in non-contact optical thermometer and dynamic information security. However, achieving multimode emissions in simple rare-earth systems through controlled energy transfer remains challenging. Herein, we designed an Er 3+ -activated non-core-shell luminescent material based on the all-inorganic double perovskite Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 with an ultralow phonon energy, enabling high-efficiency and color-tunable emission. Multimodal luminescence is realized via precisely tailored energy migration among Er 3+ ions under diverse excitation wavelengths ( λ ex = 1550, 980, 808, 376 nm). By further introducing Yb 3+ as a sensitizer, the upconversion (UC) intensity and polychromatic emission are significantly enhanced via efficient Er 3+ →Yb 3+ energy transfer under 980 and 376 nm excitation. Additionally, a ratiometric thermometer is developed based on the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) of the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) in Er 3+ ions, achieving superior relative sensitivity ( S r = 1.12%/K) and resolution (δ T = 1.20 K). Moreover, a high-security encryption/decryption system is constructed by exploiting the tunable luminescence under 376 and 980 nm excitation, enabling multi-wavelength-decoded Chinese Pinyin encoding and ASC-II binary encoding schemes. This work establishes a feasible strategy of precise ion-functionalization in an ultralow-phonon host, demonstrating high-performance capabilities in remote optical thermometry and information encryption, and providing a versatile platform for next-generation photonic applications.

Lead-free double perovskites (LFDPs) usually exhibit poor luminescent performance, and doping lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ) presents a promising solution to solve this problem. However, most Ln 3+ ions face difficulties in incorporating into LFDPs due to the mismatch in radius or valence state. Here, we successfully synthesized rare-earth (RE 3+ ) based Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 (CNLC) LFDPs and achieved efficient green emission through doping Tb 3+ into CNLC. Introducing Sb 3+ improves the absorption efficiency of CNLC: Tb 3+ from 25.1 % to 73.5 % by establishing an energy transfer channel from Sb 3+ to Tb 3+ . Benefiting from the energy transfer, the CNLC: 0.01Sb 3+ , 0.10Tb 3+ phosphor produces blue-green dual emissions, highlighting its potential in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). In addition, an anti-counterfeiting pattern composed of CNLC: Sb 3+ , CNLC: Tb 3+ , and CNLC: Sb 3+ , Tb 3+ samples was fabricated, which shows their promising prospect in anti-counterfeiting applications.

The demand for advanced luminescent perovskites with tunable emission and excellent thermal stability is rapidly growing in secure optical encryption and high-precision temperature sensing. Herein, we develop a multifunctional Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : Sb 3+ /Ho 3+ /Yb 3+ (CNLC: Sb-Ho-Yb) perovskite that achieves coordinated control of color modulation and thermal robustness. By enabling efficient Sb 3+ →Ho 3+ energy transfer in downshifting (DS) and simultaneously suppressing Ho 3+ nonradiative losses in upconversion (UC), the Sb 3+ -doped strategy significantly enhances both Ho 3+ DS and Ho 3+ -Yb 3+ UC emissions, serving as a foundation for color-coded encryption. The CNLC: Sb-Ho-Yb system further enables dual-mode thermometry by exploiting the contrasting thermal behaviors of its UC (enhanced) and DS (quenched) emissions, allowing for temperature sensing tailored to the specific thermal responses of the respective luminescence mode through two independent fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) methodologies. Specifically, excitation-wavelength-controlled color switching enables high-security and multi-dimensional optical encryption with strong anti-interference capability, while the high luminescence sensitivity and reversible thermal response ensure high-precision temperature sensing with excellent signal fidelity. Overall, this work establishes a new design paradigm that bridges thermal stability and tunable luminescence in perovskite systems, paving the way toward next-generation intelligent optical encryption and reliable thermal sensing technologies.
