Realization of blue-white light emission in Zn2+-doped CsCdCl3 metal halides

Kaihuang Huang,Shuaigang Ge,Chaowei Huang,Yongqi Yang,Bingsuo Zou

In recent years, metal halides have attracted much attention because of their fascinating optical properties. However, realizing an emission with efficient white light afterglow is still a great challenge. Here, high-purity Zn 2+ -doped CsCdCl 3 crystals have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Part of the Zn 2+ ions replace part of the Cd 2+ ions in the coplanar octahedron, so atomically confined excitons are formed around the coplanar octahedron. This exciton produces blue emission with a center wavelength of 422 nm at room temperature, but also produces weak STE at 595 nm. This is due to the dominance of confined exciton ( Cd CE) luminescence and suppression of intrinsic STE with PLQY reaching 44.53 %. Doping of Zn 2+ emits a white afterglow at room temperature. Raman and pyroelectric spectroscopic analyses show that the A 1g 246 cm −1 phonon mode plays an important role in the electron-phonon coupling process and dominates the afterglow luminescence process. In addition, white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) were fabricated with Zn 2+ doped CsCdCl 3 to show their potential in lighting applications.

Color-Tunable CsCdCl3 Perovskite for Low-Temperature Anticounterfeiting and Information Storage Applications

Xue Hao,Ting Wang,Xuanyu Zhu,Lihui Hou,Lin Nie,Haozhe Liu,Yang Yue,Xin An,Qingshan He,Xue Yu

Low-temperature anticounterfeiting technologies play a crucial role in ensuring the authenticity and integrity of temperature-sensitive products such as vaccines, pharmaceuticals, and food items. In this work, a low-temperature anticounterfeiting route based on the differentiated photoluminescence (PL), PersL, and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) behaviors of metal halide perovskite, pure CsCdCl3, and CsCdCl3:10% Te4+ is proposed. The CsCdCl3 host exhibits pronounced color shifts, encompassing PL, PersL, and TSL behaviors, ranging from blue to yellow and orange as the temperature rises from 100 K to room temperature. This color change is attributed to a change in the luminous center (from the D3d octahedron to the C3v octahedron). Conversely, the addition of Te4+ as the luminescence center inhibits the matrix emission, maintains the characteristic orange emission of Te4+, and regulates the trap distribution of the matrix at low temperature and the TL luminescence intensity. This work highlights the significant promise of CsCdCl3:10% Te4+ and CsCdCl3 phosphors as innovative low-temperature anticounterfeiting technologies, especially for cold-chain vaccine safety monitoring.

Realizing Efficient Emission in Three-Dimensional CsCdCl3 Single Crystals by Introducing Separated Emitting Centers

Yan Zhang,Lei Zhou,Dan Li,Hui Li,Lei Zhang,Wei Shen,Ming Li,Rongxing He

Hitherto, three-dimensional (3D) perovskite single crystals with a low exciton binding energy generally possess inferior photoluminescence (PL) performance due to the spatially unconfined nature of excitons. In this work, 3D CsCdCl3 single crystals with multiple emissions from self-trapped excitons (STEs) have been developed, which unsurprisingly exhibit a discouraging PL quantum yield (PLQY) of ∼4.8%. To improve the luminescence efficiency, Mn2+ and Sn2+ are introduced into the lattice as dopants, respectively. By embedding Mn2+ ion into CsCdCl3, the long Mn–Mn distance enables the resultant material to produce an intense orange emission (∼100% PLQY) from the d–d orbital transition (4T1–6A1) of Mn2+. Intriguingly, the embedded Sn2+ triggers the formation of Jahn–Teller-like STEs that induces a subsequent deep red emission with a PLQY of ∼28.22%, which is quite high for 3D bulk perovskites. Such a remarkable PL efficiency is attributed to the distinctive bonding mode of CsCdCl3 that encourages the expression of the Sn 5s2 lone pair. Furthermore, a white-light-emitting diode (WLED) is also fabricated with Mn2+-doped CsCdCl3 to show its potential in lighting application. This work paves a new avenue to improve the luminescence performance of bulk 3D perovskite materials.

Excitation-dependent persistent luminescence in CsCdCl3: Mn2+, Sb3+ phosphors for multi-dimensional optical encryption

Qing Li,Bowang Liu,Kaixin Guo,Ruirui Cui,Xu Wang,Chaoyong Deng

Mn 2+ ,Sb 3+ co-doping enables excitation-dependent afterglow in CsCdCl 3 phosphors. • Mn 2+ ,Sb 3+ co-doping prolongs CsCdCl 3 afterglow compared with singly doped samples. • Multi-dimensional optical encoding based on excitation- and time-dependent afterglow enables dynamic anti-counterfeiting. Excitation-dependent persistent luminescence materials attract growing interest for optical encryption, as emission colour and decay behaviour enable multi-parameter information encoding. Achieving high brightness, stable afterglow over a wide temperature range, and controllable emission output within a single material system remains challenging. In this work, CsCdCl 3 : Mn 2+ , Sb 3+ phosphors are synthesized via a room-temperature solution method, which offers a simple and scalable route. The materials exhibit distinct afterglow responses under ultraviolet excitation at 254, 310, and 365 nm. Sb 3+ exhibit cyan emission originating from the 3 P 1 → 1 S 0 transition, while Mn 2+ gives rise to orange-red emission ( 4 T 1 ( 4 G) → 6 A 1 ( 6 S)), sensitized by energy transfer from Sb 3+ to Mn 2+ . The relative contributions of these emission centres vary with excitation wavelength. Excitation-dependent afterglow decay behaviour is therefore achieved. Thermoluminescence analysis reveals a quasi-continuous trap distribution. This distribution supports stable afterglow over a wide temperature range. It also determines the decay behaviour. Excitation-dependent trap filling causes variations in afterglow lifetime. Time-resolved luminescence output is achieved. These properties enable dynamic optical anti-counterfeiting. Information is encoded and decoded through excitation wavelength, emission colour, and afterglow duration. Multi-dimensional and time-dependent data display is realised. This work offers great potential for designing persistent luminescence materials for advanced optical encryption applications.

Efficient energy transfer from self-trapped excitons to Mn2+ dopants in CsCdCl3:Mn2+ perovskite nanocrystals

Zhang Anran,Zhou Xinquan,Gu Ranran,Xia Zhiguo

Mn 2+ doping has been adopted as an efficient approach to regulating the luminescence properties of halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). However, it is still difficult to understand the interplay of Mn 2+ luminescence and the matrix self-trapped exciton (STE) emission therein. In this study, Mn 2+ -doped CsCdCl 3 NCs are prepared by hot injection, in which CsCdCl 3 is selected because of its unique crystal structure suitable for STE emission. The blue emission at 441 nm of undoped CsCdCl 3 NCs originates from the defect states in the NCs. Mn 2+ doping promotes lattice distortion of CsCdCl 3 and generates bright orange-red light emission at 656 nm. The energy transfer from the STEs of CsCdCl 3 to the excited levels of the Mn 2+ ion is confirmed to be a significant factor in achieving efficient luminescence in CsCdCl 3 :Mn 2+ NCs. This work highlights the crucial role of energy transfer from STEs to Mn 2+ dopants in Mn 2+ -doped halide NCs and lays the groundwork for modifying the luminescence of other metal halide perovskite NCs.

All-inorganic Mn2+-doped metal halide perovskite crystals for the late-time detection of X-ray afterglow imaging

Sijian Wu,Lifang Yuan,Geng Chen,Chaoyue Peng,Yahong Jin

All-inorganic metal halide perovskite (MHP) materials have been widely studied because of their unique optoelectronic properties, whereas there has been little research reported on their X-ray afterglow imaging properties. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of Mn2+-doped hexagonal CsCdCl3 MHP crystals with excellent X-ray scintillation and X-ray induced afterglow. The orange emission from Mn2+ shows a red shift due to the strong interaction of the Mn2+–Mn2+ dimers formed at higher doping concentrations. The high-energy X-rays with higher electron filling capacity to feed the shallow (0.71 eV) and deep (0.90–1.08 eV) traps enable a long orange afterglow for more than 300 min. The afterglow emission can be rejuvenated effectively by 870 nm stimulus or heating even after 72 h of decay. Finally, we demonstrate the proof-of-concept applications of the fabricated flexible scintillator films for real-time online X-ray imaging with a spatial resolution of 12.2 lp mm−1, as well as time-lapse X-ray imaging recorded by a cell phone, which shows promise for being able to do offline late-time detection of X-ray afterglow imaging in the future.
