Humic acid (HA) is the main component of organic matter in effluent from wastewater treatment. The effective removal of HA is significant. In this study, a novel catalyst was prepared using a transition metal oxide as the active component and Al 2 O 3 as a granular carrier. The mechanism of catalytic ozonation of HA under neutral pH conditions and its efficiency were investigated. Under the chosen conditions (an ozone concentration of 2.2 mg/L, 50 mg/L HA solution, catalyst dosage of 5 g/L and initial pH of 6.49), the Cu/Ce–Al 2 O 3 bimetallic catalyst led to 54.79% TOC removal rate after 30 min; the removal rate by ozone alone was only 20.49%. The characteristics of organic compounds determined by FT-IR and GC–MS showed that organic compounds were degraded significantly by the catalytic treatment. The addition of catalysts could effectively degrade toxic intermediates and reduce the acute toxicity produced by ozonation. Humic acid substances were largely removed and transformed into biodegradable intermediates. This study proposes a new and efficient ozonation catalyst for practical applications in advanced wastewater treatment.

A composite Mn-Cu-Ce tri-metal oxide supported on γ-Al 2 O 3 (Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 ) catalyst was prepared by an impregnation-calcination method and investigated in the catalytic ozonation treatment of real coal chemical wastewater (CCW). The catalyst was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XRF, BET, and XPS techniques. The results showed that Mn, Cu, and Ce metal oxides were evenly distributed on the Al 2 O 3 surface and the catalyst maintained a large surface area and a high pore volume compared with the pristine Al 2 O 3 . The synergy between Mn, Cu, and Ce oxides greatly enriched the catalytic active sites and enhanced the ozonation performance. The catalytic ozonation process with Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 increased the removal rate of total organic carbon (TOC) by 31.6% compared with ozonation alone. The ketones, aromatic compounds, phenols, and nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds in CCW have been effectively degraded and mineralized by Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 catalytic ozonation process, and its biodegradability has also been significantly improved. The experimental results of ∙OH scavengers revealed that the mechanism of Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 catalytic ozonation was to promote the generation of ∙OH radicals. The catalytic activity of Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 was only a slight decrease in six consecutive catalytic ozonation treatments, showing good stability. Therefore, Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 can be used as a candidate catalyst for the advanced treatment of refractory organic wastewaters upon catalytic ozonation.

It is important to develop a catalyst that has high catalytic activity and can improve the degradation efficiency of refractory organic pollutants in the catalytic ozonation process. In this study, Fe-Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 was synthesised via impregnation calcination for catalytic ozonation of bio-treated coking wastewater. The physical and chemical characteristics of the catalysts were analysed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller nitrogen adsorption–desorption methods. The effects of catalyst dosage, pH, and reflux ratio on the degradation efficiency of wastewater were examined in laboratory-scale experiments. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of bio-treated coking wastewater was estimated to be 52.76 % under optimal conditions. The experiments on the catalytic mechanism demonstrated that the surface hydroxyl formed by the Lewis acid sites on the surface of the catalyst can react with ozone as the active site forming the active oxygen (·OH, ·O 2 – , and 1 O 2 ), thereby efficiently degrading the organic pollutants in coking wastewater. Furthermore, a pilot-scale experiment on the catalytic ozonation of bio-treated coking wastewater was carried out using an Fe-Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, while the effects of the initial pollutant concentration, ozone concentration, and gas flow on the COD removal rate were studied on a pilot scale. It was found that the COD removal rate of the wastewater was ∼ 60 % under optimal parameters. After the treatment, the wastewater steadily reached the coking wastewater discharge standard (COD < 80 mg/L), while the operating cost of catalytic ozonation reached ∼ 0.032$/m 3 , thereby paving the way toward economic engineering applications. The COD degradation kinetics in the bio-treated coking wastewater followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Three-dimensional fluorescence and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry revealed that macromolecular organic pollutants in the bio-treated coking wastewater were greatly degraded. In summary, Fe-Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 exhibited good reusability, high catalytic activity, and low cost and has a wide application prospect in the treatment of coking wastewater.
