Maximizing the Cu–ZnO interface is regarded as the best strategy to promote methanol synthesis activity over CuZn catalysts. Reducing the ZnO particle size can enhance the Cu–ZnO interaction, but its synthesis with a sub-5 nm size still remains a challenge. Moreover, the fabrication of an active powder catalyst with an inverse ZnO/Cu configuration is still very rare. In this work, we report a facile synthesis of inverse ZnO/Cu catalysts by direct calcination of Cu@ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8). The particle size of ZnO and Cu can be tuned by changing the Cu loading as well as the calcination temperature. Importantly, inverse ZnO/Cu catalysts with sub-5 nm ZnO were obtained under gentle calcination at 623 K. In the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, the highest methanol synthesis activity reached 933 g kgcat−1 h−1 at 533 K and 4.5 MPa, with a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.013 s−1, over an optimized C2Z-623 catalyst, which exceeds the commercial CuZnAl catalyst (HiFuel R120, Johnson Matthey) and has ranked the top reported value over advanced CuZn catalysts under comparable conditions. Such excellent activity is attributed to the inverse structure of Cu particles covered by sub-5 nm ZnO, which promotes the intimate Cu–ZnO interface with enhanced SMSI. Moreover, we find that the methanol turnover frequency (TOF) monotonically increases with decreasing the particle size of ZnO as well as Cu. It is proposed that reducing the ZnO size favors the spillover of reducible ZnOx species onto the Cu surface while lowering the Cu size is responsible for the enhanced amount of exposed Cu steps for accommodating Zn species, both of which could facilitate the formation of Zn covered Cu steps as active sites for methanol synthesis.

The application of biopolymers in adhesive design holds immense potential for advancing the sustainable manufacturing of high-performance materials. In this study, chitosan (CS), a renewable and biodegradable biopolymer, serves as the structural backbone for developing an innovative organic-inorganic hybrid resin Cu/ZIF-8@CS-MCS@BN. Initially, CS was chemically functionalized via crosslinking with maleic anhydride (MA) to form a maleated chitosan network (CS-MCS), exploiting the biopolymer's abundant amino and hydroxyl groups for covalent bonding. This chitosan-based network was subsequently reinforced with boron nitride nanosheets (BN) and copper-doped ZIF-8 metal-organic frameworks (Cu/ZIF-8), synergistically combining the flame-retardant and mechanical-enhancing properties of inorganic fillers with the organic network of the chitosan matrix. The Cu/ZIF-8@CS-MCS@BN resin was processed into two distinct wood composites: (1) plywood fabricated by hot-pressing poplar veneers with the resin exhibited exceptional interfacial adhesion, achieving a boiling-water-resistant shear strength of 1.01 MPa, which surpasses the requirements of the Chinese national standard GB/T 9846–2015; (2) lightweight aerogels prepared by freeze-drying resin-wood flour mixtures demonstrated outstanding compressive resistance (compressive modulus: 45.23 MPa) and fire safety (limiting oxygen index (LOI) = 42.8 %, UL-94 V-0 rating). This work establishes a green paradigm for fabricating multifunctional wood composites, highlighting the pivotal role of biopolymer engineering in next-generation construction materials.

Caries as a result of acid demineralization is the most common oral microbial infection disease. Due to the small and complex intraoral operating space, it is challenging to completely remove Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and other cariogenic bacteria. As an intelligent acid-responsive photosensitive nanomaterial, O2-Cu/ZIF-8@Ce6/ZIF-8@HA (OCZCH) was chosen to adapt the anaerobic and acidic microenvironment to inactivate S. mutans. In this work, OCZCH not only has a regular nanomorphology under the SEM and TEM images but also has an intelligent acid responsiveness as evidenced by the release of Ce6 and oxygen. When excited by near-infrared light at 650 nm, Ce6 released reactive oxygen species (ROS) that act synergistically with internal oxygen to significantly enhance the antimicrobial therapeutic effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT). In vitro, antimicrobial experiments showed that OCZCH could achieve an impressive sterilization effect against S. mutans and the biofilm. Notably, the acid-producing ability of the bacteria was also significantly inhibited. Considering its oxygen-carrying photosensitizing properties, excellent responsiveness to acidic environments, and antimicrobial capacity under anaerobic conditions, OCZCH is considered an innovative candidate for clinical application in treating dental caries.

The moist wound environment of the human body immediately following injury is highly susceptible to microbial colonization and subsequent infection, potentially triggering a prolonged inflammatory response. Existing dressings tend to be more monofunctional, making it difficult to cope with wound bleeding and bacterial growth at the same time. The development of more effective wound dressings is a critical priority in contemporary wound care. In this study, we developed a hydrogel wound dressing comprising two components: (1) antimicrobial particles of curcumin (Cur)-loaded bimetallic organic framework (Cu/ZIF-8), and (2) a carrier hydrogel formed by methacryloylated gelatin (GelMA) cross-linked with methacryloylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA). The experimental results confirmed the successful loading of curcumin with 45.6% for Cu/ZIF-8@Cur. In addition, the material exhibits pH-responsive behavior, excellent biocompatibility (>80% cell survival), low hemolytic activity (<5%), and potent antimicrobial activity (≥99%) against E. coli and S. aureus. It is stable under neutral conditions and releases bactericidal particles under bacterial infection (in an acidic environment) to achieve sterilization. This study addresses the limitations of gelatin-based dressings, such as inadequate hemostatic capacity and weak antimicrobial performance, and it demonstrates promising potential for clinical translation.

Recently, the combination of chemotherapy and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has become a desirable strategy in the treatment of cancer. However, a satisfactory therapeutic outcome is often difficult to achieve due to the deficiency of endogenous H2O2 and O2 in the tumor microenvironment. In this study, a CaO2@DOX@Cu/ZIF-8 nanocomposite was prepared as a novel nanocatalytic platform to enable the combination of chemotherapy and CDT in cancer cells. The anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was loaded onto calcium peroxide (CaO2) nanoparticles (NPs) to form CaO2@DOX, which was then encapsulated in a copper zeolitic imidazole ester MOF (Cu/ZIF-8) to form CaO2@DOX@Cu/ZIF-8 NPs. In the mildly acidic tumor microenvironment, CaO2@DOX@Cu/ZIF-8 NPs rapidly disintegrated, releasing CaO2, which reacted with water to generate H2O2 and O2 in the tumor microenvironment. The ability of CaO2@DOX@Cu/ZIF-8 NPs to combine chemotherapy and CDT was assessed by conducting cytotoxicity, living dead staining, cellular uptakes, H&E staining, and TUNEL assays in vitro and in vivo. The combination of chemotherapy and CDT of CaO2@DOX@Cu/ZIF-8 NPs had a more favorable tumor suppression effect than the nanomaterial precursors, which were not capable of the combined chemotherapy/CDT.

Repair of periodontal and maxillofacial bone defects is a major challenge in clinical. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is considered one of the most effective methods. However, the efficacy of currently available GBR membranes for repair is frequently limited by their poor osteogenic potential and lack of antibacterial activity. The first step in this investigation was to construct a zinc-based zeolite-imidazolate framework loaded with copper ions ( [email protected] ). Following that, a novel polycaprolactone/polylactic acid/nano-hydroxyapatite/ [email protected] (PCL/PLA/n-HA/ [email protected] ) GBR membrane was developed using a simple porogen with nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) approach. The produced membrane with asymmetric porous structure (one smooth side and one rough side) possesses hydrophilicity corresponding to the roughness of its two sides. The superior mechanical property, stability of degradation, and ion release capability of the membrane all contribute to the clinical feasibility. Additionally, in vitro biological experiments demonstrated that the PCL/PLA/n-HA/ [email protected] membrane had favorable osteogenic and antibacterial properties, which suggests the high potential for application in the GBR procedure.

Recently, superhydrophobic coating modified magnesium alloys are extensively utilized for anti-corrosion, anti-fouling and anti-bioadhesion fields due to their unique surface characteristics. However, lack of antibacterial and osteogenic properties have restricted the development of medical magnesium alloys for clinical implantation. Here, a facile superhydrophobic wettability transformation strategy is proposed to impart medical magnesium alloys with outstanding corrosion resistance , protection against bacterial infection and promotion of osteogenesis process. The copper (Cu 2+ )-doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) coatings were synthesized upon the surface of HA-modified Mg alloy via solvothermal method and then followed hydrophobic treatment in a mixed ethanol solution of dodecyl mercaptan (DDM) and myristic acid (MA) to obtain superhydrophobic properties. This particular superhydrophobic coating can be irradiated by visible light to make ligand-to-metal charge transfer produce photoelectrons and be captured upon the Cu@ZIF-8 coating surfaces as paramagnetic Zn 2+ sites, and then generated reactive oxygen species which can scavenge off the reductive dodecyl mercaptan, thus converting to hydrophilic. This wettability transition allows for the regulation of implant surface properties according to the functional requirements of the implant at different clinical stages. Furthermore, the composite coatings modified Mg alloy after wettability transformation from superhydrophobic to hydrophilic can significantly kill pathogenic bacteria and promote osteoblast attaching behavior.

Hypoxia and overexpression of glutathione (GSH) are typical characteristics of the tumor microenvironment, which severely hinders cancer treatments. Here, we design a novel biodegradable therapeutic system, O2–Cu/ZIF-8@Ce6/ZIF-8@F127 (OCZCF), to simultaneously achieve GSH depletion and O2-enhanced combination therapy. Notably, the doped Cu2+ doubles the O2 storage capacity of the ZIF-8 matrix, which makes OCZCF an excellent pH-sensitive O2 reservoir for conquering tumor hypoxia, enhancing the photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficiency of chlorin e6 (Ce6) under 650 nm laser irradiation. Moreover, the released Cu2+ can act as a smart reactive oxygen species protector by consuming intracellular GSH. The byproduct Cu+ will undergo highly efficient Fenton-like reaction to achieve chemodynamic therapy (CDT) in the presence of abundant H2O2. The accompanying O2 will further alleviate hypoxia. The in vitro and in vivo experimental data indicate that OCZCF could cause remarkable tumor inhibition through enhanced synergetic PDT and CDT, which may open up a new path for cancer therapy.

The tumor microenvironment (TME), characterized by hypoxia, limited H 2 O 2 availability, and elevated glutathione (GSH) concentrations, challenges reactive oxygen species (ROS)-based therapies. To address these, we developed a GOx@Cu-ZIF-8/DOX (GCZD) nanoplatform combining chemotherapy (CT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), and starvation therapy (ST). This system utilizes Cu-incorporated ZIF-8 (Cu-ZIF-8) as a versatile carrier to load glucose oxidase (GOx) and doxorubicin (DOX). Under acidic TME conditions, GCZD disintegrates, releasing GOx, Cu 2+ , and DOX. GOx catalyzes intratumoral glucose oxidation, producing gluconic acid and H 2 O 2 to achieve a triple-therapeutic effect. Gluconic acid maintains a weakly acidic environment for continuous GCZD degradation. Glucose depletion induces metabolic starvation. Generated H₂O₂ serves as substrate for Cu 2+ -mediated Fenton-like reactions, boosting ROS production. Cu 2+ exhibits catalytic activity, efficiently converting TME and GOx-generated H 2 O 2 into cytotoxic ·OH. Increased ROS concentration enhances biological macromolecule oxidation damage, intensifying CDT. Additionally, Cu 2+ oxidizes GSH to form GSSH and Cu + . This inhibits GSH-mediated ROS degradation and leverages excellent Fenton-like activity of Cu + to further enhance CDT. Simultaneously, DOX exerts chemotherapeutic effects by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, blocking tumor cell proliferation. This integrated approach, combining enhanced ROS generation, tumor cell metabolic intervention, and DNA damage, demonstrates enhanced antitumor efficacy by simultaneously targeting multiple cancer cell vulnerabilities.

Background Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) faces challenges of low catalytic ion efficiency and ROS production. We developed a ROS nano-bomb, Cu/ZIF-8@GA-Fe, to address these issues. Methods The nano-bomb was synthesized by doping copper into ZIF-8 and assembling Fe3+ and gallic acid (GA). It was tested for reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in acidic conditions and its photothermal properties. Results In an acidic micro environment, Cu/ZIF-8@GA-Fe effectively released Fe3+ and Cu2+, depleting GSH and generating ROS. The GA-Fe coating provided photothermal heat and was used to enhance Fenton reactions via dual ions for increasing ROS production. In vivo and in vitro experiments, Cu/ZIF-8@GA-Fe inhibited tumor growth with minimal side effects. Conclusion Cu/ZIF-8@GA-Fe shows promise for safe and effective CDT, offering a synergistic approach to tumor therapy.

Ag NPs@Cu-ZIF-8: ZIF-8 modified by partial Cu 2+ doping and Ag NPs loading. • The electrode maintains 128.2 mg・g −1 capacity after 10 Br − cycles. • At optimal conditions, the electrode achieves 147.2 mg·g −1 maximum Br − capacity. • DFT proves Cu 2+ -Ag modification enhances Br − adsorption. Bromide ions (Br − ) are finite and non-renewable strategic resources, and their highly selective recovery is of great significance for the sustainable utilization of brine resources and ecological environmental protection. To address the shortcomings of conventional adsorbents such as poor electrical conductivity and insufficient active sites, an Ag NPs@Cu-ZIF-8 composite was successfully constructed via a synergistic modification strategy involving copper framework doping and silver nanoparticle loading in this study. The composite not only retains the inherent porous structural advantages of ZIF-8 but also effectively overcomes its poor electrical conductivity. Systematic material characterizations combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to reveal the microscopic adsorption mechanism of the composite toward Br − in aqueous solution. The results demonstrate that the introduction of silver nanoparticles significantly enhances the electrical conductivity of the material and provides abundant active adsorption sites for Br − capture. Electrochemical test results reveal that the Ag NPs@Cu-ZIF-8 membrane electrode achieves a maximum bromide adsorption capacity of 147.2 mg·g −1 under optimal experimental conditions. The adsorbed bromide can be converted into elemental bromine through extraction, realizing efficient resource recovery. Cycling experiments indicate that the adsorption capacity only drops from 139.7 mg·g −1 to 93.5 mg·g −1 after ten adsorption-desorption cycles under conventional conditions, which reflects outstanding cycling stability. This material presents prominent advantages for the green and efficient recovery of bromine resources. Download: Download high-res image (104KB) Download: Download full-size image

To develop an efficient bifunctional material for bisphenol A (BPA) removal, a nitrogen-rich hierarchical porous Cu x @N-CM composite was synthesized by pyrolyzing Cu@ZIF-8 encapsulated with dicyandiamide (DCD). DCD introduced more pyridinic N, graphitic N, and Cu-N x active sites, and enhanced the material’s surface area and pore size. This unique structure endows the material with both superior adsorption capacity and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation ability, enabling efficient BPA removal from water. Specifically, after adsorption enrichment, 0.1 g L −1 of Cu x @N-CM can remove 75 % of BPA (20 mg L −1 ). Subsequent addition of 0.1 mmol L −1 PMS achieves complete BPA removal within 15 min. Furthermore, this material and process effectively minimize PMS consumption, exhibit a broad pH application range, and good cycling stability. Mechanistic studies show that adsorption occurs through pore filling, hydrophobic interactions, π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions, and complexation. PMS activation is driven by radical and non-radical synergies. In addition, the adsorption active sites and PMS activation sites do not overlap, and the adsorption process prolongs the residence time of pollutants on the catalyst surface, thereby promoting the degradation process. This study provides valuable insights into designing catalysts for removing high-concentration, refractory organic pollutants from water.
