Adsorption limitation investigation on olefins for Cu-BTC

Yang Xiao,Wang Yunbo,Cao Weihua,Jiang Ruizheng,Xie Guoxin,Cao Yuying,Qi Xiaowen

To utilize Cu-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) adsorbed lubricant oils in the self-lubricating field, the adsorption properties of Cu-BTC on different 1-olefins must be clarified. In this work, 1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-nonene, 1-decene, 1-undecene, and 1-dodecene were studied by the Monte Carlo method and experimentally. The adsorption limit of Cu-BTC for n-olefins was determined as 1-undecene by the adsorption isotherms. This suggested a limit for even straight-chain molecules to the adsorption of Cu-BTC. The maximum ratio of the olefin length of the largest pore diameter ( L / D ) of Cu-BTC was approximately 1.57. Furthermore, theoretical calculations (radial distribution function (RDF)) and experiments (infrared (IR) spectra) confirmed the interaction of n-olefin adsorbates and the Cu-BTC framework occurred between the -CH= of olefins and the Cu and O atoms of the Cu-BTC framework. This work adds to the understanding and investigation of the adsorption of liquid lubricants using Cu-BTC as a metal-organic framework (MOF).

Tannic acid functionalized Cu-BTC composite for electrochemical sensing of glucose

Wei Yunping,Wang Nan,Liu Xingcen,Lin Meng

In this experiment, a copper-based metal–organic framework (Cu-BTC) was successfully prepared and utilized to compose a copper-tannic acid (TA) complex by in situ tannic acid etching on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. The Cu-BTC was obtained by the electrodeposition method with a voltage of − 1.6 V. The TA-Cu complex retains the frame structure of the metal–organic framework and has good electrochemical properties. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and amperometric methods were used to estimate the performance of the TA-Cu-modified electrode in glucose detection. The current response of the TA-Cu sensor shows a linear relationship with glucose concentration at 0.5 V in NaOH solution. The modified electrode as an electrochemical glucose sensor exhibits good sensitivity with a low detection limit of 0.002 mM. The TA-Cu-modified electrode also exhibited good stability, anti-interference, and repeatability in glucose detection.

Tuning secondary building unit of Cu-BTC to simultaneously enhance its CO2 selective adsorption and stability under moisture

Yufang Wu,Zhenqiang Lv,Xin Zhou,Junjie Peng,Yuning Tang,Zhong Li

We report a bifunctional SBU-tuning strategy that simultaneously enhances the selective CO 2 adsorption capacity of Cu-BTC and its structural stability under moisture. A series of Gly@Cu-BTCs were prepared by grafting glycine (Gly) to the secondary building units (SBUs) of the commercially available Cu-BTC through the nano-seed assistant ultrafast room temperature synthesis. N 2 isotherms evidenced higher BET specific surface area and pore volume of Gly@Cu-BTCs than that of Cu-BTC. Hence, Gly 0.3 @Cu-BTC exhibited a superior CO 2 capacity of 5.4 mmol/g at ambient conditions, which is 12% higher than that of Cu-BTC. Besides, the adsorptive selectivity of Gly 0.3 @Cu-BTC for the equimolar CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 mixtures was separately up to 8.53 and 59.38, being 11% and 15% higher compared to that of Cu-BTC. More importantly, the stability of Gly 0.3 @Cu-BTC against moisture was improved. After 10 days’ exposure in 55% relative humidity, Gly 0.3 @Cu-BTC preserved 80% of its original CO 2 capacity, while only 9% CO 2 capacity remained for Cu-BTC. In addition, negligible CO 2 capacity loss of Gly 0.3 @Cu-BTC was observed in the subsequent 10 days in moisture after the initial exposure. Gly 0.3 @Cu-BTC exhibited excellent regenerability, and its CO 2 desorption efficiency reached up to 98% based on the consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The origination of the improved stability under moist of Gly 0.3 @Cu-BTC was interpreted with DFT calculation. The bifunctional SBU-tuning strategy demonstrated in this work enables the potential adsorptive separation application of Cu-BTC under moist working condition.

Enhancing selective adsorption of CO2 through encapsulating FeTPPs into Cu-BTC

Guangping Lei,Guojun Xi,Zihan Liu,Qibin Li,Huiyuan Cheng,Hantao Liu

Efficient capture and separation of CO 2 from flue gas and natural gas are highly promising to reduce carbon emissions and promote fuel calorific value. Here, a novel adsorbent (FeTPPs@Cu-BTC) for CO 2 separation was synthesized by encapsulating 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis (4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrinato iron (III) chloride (FeTPPs) into the cages of Cu-BTC through an in-situ packaging strategy. Such strategy efficiently overcomes the shortcoming of pore clogging and leaching induced by incorporating guest molecules through the wet impregnation method. Meanwhile, more tunable micropores and extra affinity sites for CO 2 adsorption were created after encapsulation of FeTPPs, which preferably enhanced the CO 2 uptakes of FeTPPs@Cu-BTC under low pressures and promoted the separation performances for CO 2 /N 2 (15:85, v/v) and CO 2 /CH 4 (50:50, v/v) mixtures. The corresponding selectivity of FeTPPs@Cu-BTC calculated by ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) respectively increase to 57.7 and 14.0 from 36.0 and 10.8 of the pristine Cu-BTC at 273 K and 100 kPa, which also exceeds most reported adsorbents. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations further elucidated that extra interaction with CO 2 and ‘sieve effect’ for N 2 or CH 4 after FeTPPs encapsulation immediately boost CO 2 uptakes and separation performance of FeTPPs@Cu-BTC. This study provides a new design idea for the development of new adsorbent materials.

Structural modulation of Cu-BTC/PS nanofiber membrane and its low resistance antimicrobial air filtration application

Zhicheng Feng,Yinghua Li,Jianzhang Mai,Weixing Yang

Increasing air pollution poses a serious challenge to human beings. In view of the contradiction between filtration efficiency and pressure drop and the single function of traditional air filtration materials, the present study synthesized Cu-BTC by room temperature solvent method, and then based on the strategy of in-situ modification of Cu-BTC, Cu-BTC/PS-2 composite membranes with low filtration resistance and antibacterial resistance were constructed by modulating the pore structure of polystyrene (PS) fibre membranes. The composite membrane achieved 99.79 % filtration efficiency against PM 0.3 with a pressure drop of only 50.1 Pa. The stability of the composite membrane was significantly better than that of the commercial electret melt-blown filters, and the antimicrobial rate of the composite membrane against E. coli was greater than 99.9 %. This study provides a new material design strategy for the development of a new generation of high-efficiency, low-resistance and antibacterial air filtration materials.

Interface synthesis of Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes and their selective adsorption activity toward Congo red

Defeng Hu,Zhongqiao Sun,Yide Han,Hao Meng,Xia Zhang

Considering the surface affinity of MOFs and separation advantages of polymer membranes, herein, a one-step interface synthesis strategy is used in the construction of Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes, in which Cu2+ ions and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) were dissolved in ionized water and n-octanol separately, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films were laid at the interface of two immiscible solvents. As a result, Cu-BTC was generated and readily self-assembled inside the PVDF films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method were used to characterize Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes, and Congo red (CR) was selected as the target dye to evaluate the surface adsorption activity of the hybrid membranes. Batch adsorption tests under various conditions were conducted to optimize the adsorption capacity, adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics, which were analyzed to further explore the adsorption behavior. Based on this, the adsorption mechanism was discussed. It is worth noting that because of the π–π stacking interaction and hydrogen bonding, an extraordinary adsorption capacity of CR was achieved, and the good separation advantage and the cyclic adsorption performances endow the resulting Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes with promising applications in the removal of organic dyes from practical wastewater.

Highly selective gas transport channels in mixed matrix membranes fabricated by using water-stable Cu-BTC

Shanshan Xu,Hongliang Huang,Xiangyu Guo,Zhihua Qiao,Chongli Zhong

Application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the field of gas separation has been widely explored, however most of the reported MOFs are sensitive to hydrolysis, restricting their applications under practical environments. In this work, Cu-BTC with distinguishing high resistance to hydrolysis was prepared through in-situ functionalization with sodium citrate (SC). The obtained Cu-BTC-SC can hold its structure integrity and preserve its original gas adsorption capacity even after 10 days' immersion in water. On this basis, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) containing different loadings of Cu-BTC-SC in Pebax® 1657 were fabricated and applied for CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 separation under humid conditions. The MMMs displayed excellent long-term stability towards humidified test conditions as well as improved CO 2 separation performance compared with the pristine Pebax® 1657 membrane. Specifically, the membrane incorporated with 15 wt% of Cu-BTC-SC demonstrated a CO 2 permeance of 1102.5 GPU together with a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 54.8 for the CO 2 /N 2 mixed gas, and a CO 2 permeance of 1069.6 GPU together with a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 32.5 for the CO 2 /CH 4 mixed gas, surpassing the Robeson upper bounds for CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 separation. These results demonstrate a potential effective strategy for improving the water stability of MOFs and suggest a promising candidate for the fabrication of high performance membranes for practical large-scale CO 2 separation applications.

Methyl-Shield Cu-BTC with High Water Stability through One-Step Synthesis and In Situ Functionalization

Shanshan Xu,Xiangyu Guo,Zhihua Qiao,Hongliang Huang,Chongli Zhong

Cu-BTC is a copper paddlewheel-based metal–organic framework (MOF) with great potential in gas adsorption and heterogeneous catalysis but has restricted practical applications because of its poor water stability. In this work, we propose a strategy for one-step synthesis and in situ functionalization of isopropanol (IPA)-modified Cu-BTC (Cu-BTC-IPA) with enhanced water stability. Successful incorporation of IPA into Cu-BTC was evidenced by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra. The introduction of methyl groups around unsaturated Cu sites can form a methyl-shielding microenvironment, endowing Cu-BTC-IPA with the ability to maintain the topology structure after being immersed in water even for 4 days. After soaking, Cu-BTC-IPA can preserve 95% of its original Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface areas and 90% of its initial CO2 adsorption capacity, while Cu-BTC completely lost its crystallinity. In addition, Cu-BTC-IPA managed to preserve its main crystal structure and 83% of its initial BET surface areas after 12 h of immersion in diluted HCl solution (pH = 3). The improved hydrolysis stability mechanism of Cu-BTC-IPA was investigated using density functional theory calculations. The results suggest that the strategy of incorporating IPA into Cu-BTC is very efficient in enhancing its structure stability against water and worthy of further exploitation in improving the structure stability of other MOFs with open metal sites.

CO2 adsorption on Cu-BTC to improve the quality of syngas produced from supercritical water gasification

Yan Mi,Zhang Yan,Grisdanurak Nurak,Wibowo Haryo,Yu Caimeng,Kanchanatip Ekkachai

One outstanding advantage of supercritical water gasification (SCWG) coupled with CO 2 capture and storage (CCS) technology is to realize the conversion of bio-waste into hydrogen-rich syngas. In this study, metal organic frameworks of copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) were synthesized via solvothermal method with different synthesis time and used as adsorbent for capturing CO 2 from SCWG model syngas. The effect of synthesis time, adsorption temperature, and adsorption pressure on CO 2 adsorption capacity of Cu-BTC was evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The Pareto chart showed that adsorption pressure had significant effect on CO 2 adsorption capacity, and the surface plot indicated that CO 2 adsorption capacity increased with higher adsorption pressure and lower adsorption temperature. Cu-BTC with 48-h synthesis time had the largest specific surface area (1737 cm 2 /g) and pore volume (0.73 cm 3 /g), and it exhibited the highest CO 2 capacity of 19.83 mmol/g and 13.56 mmol/g at 0 °C and 25 °C, respectively. The adsorption results showed that CO 2 concentration in multi-component gas decreased from 48.75 to 12.9%, and H 2 concentration increased from 38.75 to 75.45%. Therefore, Cu-BTC has the potential for removal of CO 2 from SCWG syngas, and more work is necessary to further improve the adsorption capacity and selectivity. Graphical abstract

Cu-BTC-based composite adsorbents for selective adsorption of CO2 from syngas

Yan Zhang,Haryo Wibowo,Li Zhong,Mika Horttanainen,Zunbo Wang,Caimeng Yu,Mi Yan

High CO 2 content exists in the raw syngas produced from supercritical water gasification of food waste, CO 2 removal to improve quality of the syngas is necessary before further utilization. In this study, Cu-BTC, Mg/Cu-BTC, Cu-BTC@MWCNT, and Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT were synthesized and characterized as CO 2 adsorbents. The adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the optimal adsorbent and adsorption conditions. The results indicated that Mg 2+ and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) doped into Cu-BTC influenced the physical properties of adsorbents. Among of all studied adsorbents, Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT had the maximum CO 2 adsorption capacity (3.63 mmol/g) and selectivity (14.28) at 25 °C and 100 kPa. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) exhibited that adsorption pressure had significant effects on CO 2 adsorption capacity of Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT. The influences of different operating parameters on CO 2 adsorption capacity and selectivity were discussed in Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT. The adsorption isotherms of gas components on Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT can be sorted as follows: CO 2  > CO > CH 4  > H 2 . In additional, the regeneration experiment with 5 times was conducted and the result showed that Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT has high stability.

Room-temperature synthesis of Fe/Cu-BTC for effective removal of tetracycline antibiotic from aquatic environments

Wei Xiang,Yueting Liao,Jinwei Cui,Yangyang Fang,Bining Jiao,Xuesu Su

Antibiotic adsorbents are getting significant attention due to the hazards posed by the accumulation of tetracycline antibiotics in water, which can adversely impact human and environmental health. Bimetallic organic frameworks (BMOFs) exhibit considerable potential in adsorption owing to their dense pore structures and synergistic effects. However, synthesizing efficient, low-cost, and easy-to-prepare BMOFs faces several challenges. Here, we describe the practical synthesis of a series of Fe/Cu-bimetallic organic frameworks (Fe/Cu-MOFs) using simple room-temperature aqueous solvent methods. The pore size structure of Fe/Cu-MOFs is determined by the Fe/Cu ratio employed in the synthesis process. Remarkably, when the Fe/Cu molar ratio was 1:2, the void ratio of Fe/Cu-MOFs increased to 0.7326 cm 3 /g, with a predominant mesoporous structure, and the maximum tetracycline (TC) adsorption capacity exhibited by Fe/Cu-BTC-1/2 was reported at a Q max of 1130.23 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics followed the quasi-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption isotherms were consistent. The Fe/Cu-BTC-1/2 was effective throughout a wide pH range (6.0–10.0), exhibiting resilience against ionic interference and enabling recycling. The predominant mechanisms of TC adsorption by Fe/Cu-BTC-1/2 include coordination, vacancy filling, and π-π stacking. Thus, our research provides an excellent adsorbent for TC antibiotics and novel insights into the simple synthesis of BMOFs and their application in environmental remediation.

Preparation of a Composite Material AC/Cu-BTC with Improved Water Stability and n-Hexane Vapor Adsorption

Manlin Li,Weiqiu Huang,Bo Tang,Fujiao Song,Aihua Lv,Xiang Ling

The Cu-BTC, a widely studied metal-organic framework (MOF), has been applied in various fields such as gas adsorption, separation, storage, and catalysis. However, the Cu-BTC collapses due to the replacement of the organic linker by water molecules under humid conditions, which limits its practical application in industries. In consideration of the undesirable water effect on the framework stability of Cu-BTC, a stable activated carbon (AC) was incorporated into it by the in situ method to yield a composite material AC/Cu-BTC with high water stability. XRD and SEM patterns proved that the AC7%/Cu-BTC successfully retains its crystal structure after being exposed to water molecules. The adsorption amount of n-hexane vapor of the AC7%/Cu-BTC after water vapor adsorption-thermal desorption is 307% of that of the Cu-BTC. The addition of the AC changes the adsorption active sites and reduces the strong affinity of the Cu-BTC to water molecules, resulting in the AC7%/Cu-BTC having a much lower adsorption rate for water vapor than the Cu-BTC. Therefore, the AC7%/Cu-BTC can be protected from a large amount of water molecules and avoid structural collapse caused by the disconnection between the copper center and the organic linker. The composite displays a potential value for stable applications of MOF-based materials under ambient conditions.
