Summary A Cu@MoS 2 microtube-based micromotor with a unique composite structure in which MoS 2 was “wrapped” on the surface of Cu microtubes confers excellent photoresponsive properties due to the unique hybridized structure. Micromotor swarms demonstrate spontaneous oscillatory motion in pure water with constant light input, without any external field changes or energetic toxic fuels. This macroscopic periodic oscillatory motion synchronized with the cycle of increasing and decreasing protons (H + ) produced by the micromotor. The H + gradient is the core of cellular ATP (adenosine triphosphate) synthesis and decomposition. Oscillating proton signals released by the micromotor can be coupled to cardiomyocytes to achieve synchronized oscillations of cell membrane potential/calcium ions and to initiate ATP hydrolysis in cardiomyocytes. The oscillatory behavior was considered to be caused by the different conversion levels of bistable reactions or by non-linear kinetics and mass transport. Specifically, MoS 2 photocatalytic hydrogen production, MoS 2 hydrolysis reactions, dynamic diffusive matter exchange from electroosmotic flow, and interfacial effects contribute to this phenomenon.

The application of peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes , facilitated by the incorporation of metal-deposited MoS 2 catalyst, has attracted considerable interest in recent years within the scientific community. Nevertheless, investigating the structure-performance relationship between MoS 2 and deposited metal still presents a formidable challenge, yet a highly desirable pursuit. In this study, a Cu-MoS 2 single-atom catalyst (SAC) was successfully synthesized by a photo-deposition method, wherein Cu ions were deposited on the MoS 2 surface. The Cu-MoS 2 /PMS system exhibits exceptional degradation performance for tetracycline (TC), with a removal efficiency reaching 96% at 60 min. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) is applied to investigate the coordination microenvironment of the catalyst by depositing of Cu. Experimental and theoretical calculations results exhibit that, on one hand, the introduction of Cu decreases the adsorption energy barrier and enhances the adsorption capacity of the catalyst for PMS. On the other hand, the abundant presence of Cu on the surface of the MoS 2 facilitates an accelerated transfer of electron , availing the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via the distinct pathway: MoS 2 → transition metal → PMS. Concurrently, the synergistic interaction between Mo and Cu expedites rapid valence evolution of Mo 4+ /Mo 5+ /Mo 6+ and Cu + /Cu 2+ , thereby further enhancing the PMS activation. Hence, adjusting the coordination microenvironment of the catalyst represents a promising strategy for enhancing the catalytic activity.

Cu@MoS 2 simultaneously enables NO 3 adsorption and *H supply. • Cu@MoS 2 -2 exhibits excellent structural stability and consistent catalytic performance. • Under light irradiation, Cu@MoS 2 -2 generates abundant high-energy hot electrons. • Cu@MoS 2 -2 achieves 94% FE and 0.526 mmol h −1 cm −2 NH 3 yield at − 0.5 V vs. RHE. Electrochemical nitrate (NO 3 − ) reduction (NO 3 RR) to ammonia (NH 3 ) is a sustainable strategy for converting nitrate-contaminated wastewater into valuable resources. However, the process involves a complex proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) that requires eight electrons and nine protons. Herein, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) arising from Cu nanoparticles anchored on MoS 2 nanosheet arrays (Cu@MoS 2 ) is harnessed to regulate electron dynamics and enhance active hydrogen (*H) availability for NO 3 RR. Under simulated sun irradiation, the optimized Cu@MoS 2 heterostructure delivers a stable NH 3 evolution rate of 0.526 mmol h −1 cm −2 with a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 94.0% at − 0.5 V, which is about 7.2 and 12 times higher than bare MoS 2 (0.073 mmol h −1 cm −2 ) and Cu (0.0438 mmol h −1 cm −2 ), respectively. This work demonstrates the capability of plasmonic cocatalysts to convert supplementary photon flux into multiple catalytic driving forces, opening a new avenue toward boosting catalytic activity through direct utilization of free solar energy. Xanthine (XA) and hypoxanthine (HA) are key biochemical markers of meat freshness, yet rapid, wide-range, and enzyme-free quantification in complex meat matrices remains challenging. Here we report a density functional theory (DFT)-guided Cu–MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure electrochemical sensor for broad-range non-enzymatic detection of XA and HA. The heterojunction prepared via a hydrothermal and ultrasonic strategy provides an efficient charge-transport pathway and enriched catalytic interfaces. DFT calculations reveal pronounced interfacial charge redistribution and strong adsorption of XA and HA on the Cu–MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 surface, with adsorption energies of − 0.98 eV for XA and − 2.16 eV for HA, explaining the boosted electrooxidation response. The sensor achieves low detection limits of 0.15 μM for XA and 0.28 μM for HA and wide linear ranges from 0.913 to 1643.5 μM and from 0.918 to 1653.1 μM, respectively, and enables simultaneous quantification from 0.5 to 400 μM with excellent linearity. Good stability, reproducibility, and anti-interference capability are obtained. In real meat samples, recoveries from 90.7% to 108.3% for XA and from 91.3% to 111.4% for HA agree well with high-performance liquid chromatography, supporting rapid meat freshness evaluation.

Achieving a balance between catalytic efficiency and structural durability remains a key challenge in heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like systems. Herein, we report a robust sodium alginate hydrogel (ACCN) with hard–soft dual interpenetrating networks, constructed by incorporating Cu@MoS 2 nanosheets and carbon dots-modified cellulose nanofibrils (CNF@CDs). This structural design enables pan-regional photo-Fenton-like catalysis via structural optimization and directed electron transport, thereby ensuring sustained ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. Three key features synergistically enhance both catalytic performance and material integrity: (1) a dual interpenetrating network comprising Cu 2+ -crosslinked sodium alginate (SA, soft phase) and hydrogen-bonded CNF@CDs (rigid phase), which reinforces mechanical strength and prevents Cu@MoS 2 leaching; (2) the SA/CNF@CDs network exhibits an ultrahigh CIP adsorption capacity, which spatially concentrates pollutants and accelerates reaction kinetics; and (3) CNF@CDs facilitates electron transfer from Cu@MoS 2 to Cu 2+ crosslinking sites, promoting pan-regional Cu 2+ /Cu + redox cycling. This spatial–electronic integration endows ACCN with a CIP degradation rate constant of 0.0426 min −1 —7.5-fold higher than that of Cu@MoS 2 . Furthermore, ACCN demonstrates excellent durability and reusability, maintaining over 95 % catalytic activity after 10 cycles, with Mo leaching below 8 ppb. This work provides a sustainable strategy for integrating structural and electronic modulation to enable high-efficiency, durable antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Novel Fenton-like catalyst HKUST-1(Cu)/MoS2-3-C with a non-equilibrium-state surface was constructed for selective degradation of phenolic contaminants. Electron-polarized distribution facilitated the formation of σ-Cu-ligand between electron-poor Cu centre and phenolic compounds, which not only enhanced radicals generation but also accelerated the Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox. Meanwhile, ≡Mo–OOSO3−complexes formed by the electron-rich Mo centre and peroxymonosulfate (PMS), could directly oxidize phenolic contaminants with the generation of SO4•−. The radical quenching experiments and EPR tests indicated that both SO4•−and•OH played a dominant role in the reaction. Additionally, O2could be reduced to O2•−by OVs and subsequently converted into1O2over the Mo centre. DFT calculation, FT-IR, and in situ Raman spectra analysis results demonstrated that phenolic compounds and PMS were respectively adsorbed by electron-poor Cu centre and electron-rich Mo centre, favouring the electrons transfer from phenolic contaminants to Mo centre for PMS activation. With synergistic effects of σ-Cu-ligand and ≡Mo–OOSO3−complexes, HKUST-1(Cu)/MoS2-3-C achieved a high degradation rate of phenolic contaminants and utilization efficiency of PMS.Keywords:fenton-like catalyst;non-equilibrium-state surface;σ-Cu-ligand;≡Mo–OOSO3−complex;phenolic contaminants degradation
