Effect of Ce Doping on Catalytic Performance of Cu/TiO2 for CO Oxidation

Li Chaoqun,Yang Yang,Ren Wei,Wang Jian,Zhu Tingyu,Xu Wenqing

Abstract CO is toxic and detrimental to human beings and the atmosphere. The presence of CO has become one of the important indicators for evaluating ambient air quality. Iron and steel sintering generate large amounts of flue gas emissions containing approximately 1% CO, which has become an important factor restricting the improvement of air quality in steel cities. The catalytic oxidation method is the simplest and most effective method for CO emission control. In this work, a series of Cu x Ce y /TiO 2 catalysts with different Ce doping levels were prepared by a one-step impregnation method and subsequently tested for catalytic CO oxidation. The Cu 0.5 Ce 0.5 /TiO 2 sample has the best catalytic activity under the conditions of 1% CO and 10% H 2 O. The catalysts were next characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, H 2 -TPR, XPS and in-situ DRIFTS methods. The characterization results show that Ce doping promotes the dispersion of copper species on the catalyst surface and improve the redox performance of the catalyst. The results of in-situ experiments showed that both Cu/TiO 2 and Cu 0.5 Ce 0.5 /TiO 2 catalysts followed Mars and van Krevelen mechanism, and Ce doping enhanced the adsorption and activation of oxygen, thus improving the low-temperature reaction activity of the catalysts. Precursor self-derived Cu@TiO2 hybrid Schottky junction for enhanced solar-to-hydrogen evolution

Pei Qiu,Yong Zhang,Gang Cheng

Solar-to-hydrogen production has attracted increasing attention since it possesses great potential in alleviating energy and environmental crises to some extent. The key issue is to develop efficient photocatalysts exhibiting superior hydrogen production capability. In this work, Cu@TiO 2 hybrid (Cu nanoparticles encapsulated in TiO 2 ) has been successfully prepared by Cu 2 O self-template reduction through solvothermal treatment in ethylene glycol-water mixed solvent. When octahedral Cu 2 O is involved in the reaction system, the Cu 2 O@Ti-precursor octahedral structure is first formed and subsequently the Cu@TiO 2 hybrid is prepared with the reduction of ethylene glycol (EG). The Cu@TiO 2 hybrid derived with different mass of Cu exhibits improved photocatalytic hydrogen production performance compare to pure TiO 2 and P25. Among those photocatalysts, the Cu@TiO 2 -10% (the copper content is 10 wt%) shows the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 4336.7 μmol g −1  h −1 , and it is twice as much as the pure TiO 2 and 1.9 times as much as P25, respectively. Based on the photo/electrochemical results, an efficient photo-generated electron-hole separation contributes to the enhancement of photocatalytic H 2 evolution upon the Cu@TiO 2 hybrid. When replacing octahedral Cu 2 O with cubic and truncated octahedrons ones, the Cu@TiO 2 hybrid photocatalysts are also obtained and they also display superior solar-to-hydrogen evolution than pure TiO 2 and P25. It is expected this work could develop an approach to design Cu-encapsulated hybrid photocatalysts for hydrogen generation .

Visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of kaolinite: Sensitized by in situ growth of Cu-TiO2

Zhengjiang Liu,Anqi Wang,Qiancheng Zhang,Juming Liu,Huiyan Ma,Di Li,Lei Xing

Sensitized kaolinite with improved visible-light catalytic activity was prepared via a facile in-situ growth of nanosized Cu-TiO 2 on the surface of the sulfated kaolinite impregnated in Cu-TiO 2 sol. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized in terms of various techniques. The transmission electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer results revealed that Cu-TiO 2 could grow on the surface of the pretreated kaolinite and the aggregation of Cu-TiO 2 was successfully inhibited. The X-ray photoelectron spectrum confirmed the formation of Al  O  Ti bonds between Cu-TiO 2 and sulfated kaolinite in the sensitized kaolinite composite. The sensitized kaolinite composite exhibited significantly improved performance in the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), leading to about 87% of RhB degradation in 180 min, which is superior to that of the kaolinite, calcined kaolin, and sulfated calcined kaolin under visible-light irradiation. The superior photodegradation activity of the sensitized kaolinite composite was primarily attributed to the synergetic effect of Cu-TiO 2 sensitization and sulfation, resulting from the efficient transfer and separation of the photo-induced charge carriers between Cu-TiO 2 and kaolinite.

High-performance of Cu-TiO2 for photocatalytic oxidation of formaldehyde under visible light and the mechanism study

Min Chen,Honghong Wang,Xueyan Chen,Fei Wang,Xiaoxiao Qin,Changbin Zhang,Hong He

Photocatalysis is regarded as a promising method for indoor formaldehyde (HCHO) removal, and there remains a strong demand for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts for HCHO oxidation under visible light. Herein, by grafting nano CuO x clusters onto TiO 2 , the higher performance is achieved over Cu-TiO 2 for the photocatalytic oxidation of HCHO under visible light compared with the typical photocatalysts N-TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 . It is found that the presence of water greatly promotes the activity of HCHO oxidation on Cu-TiO 2 . The characterization results indicate that the CuO x clusters on TiO 2 exhibit high redox reversibility between Cu (II) and Cu (I) and greatly facilitate the migration of electrons. The mechanism of photocatalytic oxidation of HCHO was explored by using in situ DRIFTS measurements and DFT calculations. It is shown that HCHO is firstly oxidized to dioxymethylene (DOM), and then DOM is transformed into formate species under visible light irradiation. DFT calculations results indicate that the OH species are responsible for surface formate decomposition, which is the rate-determining step, while O 2 − radical is not active in formate decomposition. Our findings improve the understanding on the photocatalytic oxidation of HCHO, and the Cu-TiO 2 catalyst is a promising candidate for practical application in indoor air purification.

Enhancement of the activity of Cu/TiO2 catalyst by Eu modification for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Liu Yuan-zhen,Xu Qi-yan,Guo Rui-tang,Duan Chao-peng,Wu Gui-lin,Miao Yu-fang,Gu Jing-wen

The Cu/TiO 2 catalysts with the addition of Eu were developed by the sol-gel way for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x by NH 3 . Activity tests revealed that CuEu/TiO 2 -0.15 catalyst showed the optimal de-NO x performance in a wide temperature range (150–300 °C), along with an admirable SO 2 tolerance. According to characterization analysis, the relationship between the NH 3 -SCR performance and physicochemical characters of samples was explored. The adjunction of Eu on Cu/TiO 2 catalyst can contribute to the formation of a large amount of Cu 2+ , adsorbed oxygen, and acid sites on the catalyst surface. Moreover, the Eu addition on Cu/TiO 2 is favorable to the generation of activated NO x and NH 3 substances adsorbed on the catalyst surface, which would conduce to the NH 3 -SCR process by Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism effectively.

Experimental study on preparing Cu/TiO2 photothermal catalysts using photodeposition one-step method and its application in catalytic hydrogen production from glycerol

Linhao Wang,Dongqiang Lei,Yue Lv,Ruishen Guo,Ying Wu,Zhifeng Wang

In the study, a novel photodeposition one-step method for preparing Cu/TiO 2 photothermal catalysis was proposed to catalyze hydrogen production from glycerol. The biomass glycerol was used as a sacrificial agent to provide electrons for Cu 2+ loading during the catalyst preparation stage, and the remaining biomass glycerol was used directly as a reactant for photothermal-catalyzed hydrogen production. The catalysts were characterized using XRD, SEM, and TEM to obtain their phases and structures. The Cu/TiO 2 photodeposition process evaluation method based on image analysis and processing, and its experimental platform were established. The influence of parameters such as irradiation intensity, temperature, and catalyst concentration on the loading rate of photodeposited Cu 2+ was analyzed. The results demonstrated that enhancing the irradiation intensity, increasing the temperature, and decreasing the catalyst concentration can increase the loading rate of Cu. The Cu/TiO 2 photothermal catalyst prepared by this method showed a hydrogen production rate 1.6 times higher than that of the deposition and precipitation method under the same reaction conditions, which proved that the catalyst had a high photothermal catalysis hydrogen production activity. The hydrogen production rate at an irradiation intensity of 250 mW/cm 2 was 628.16 μmol/(g·h), which was 1.9 times that at an irradiation intensity of 100 mW/cm 2 . Both elevated temperature and increased irradiation intensity can significantly improve the photothermal catalysis glycerol hydrogen production activity.

Cu/TiO2 adsorbents modified by air plasma for adsorption–oxidation of H2S

Yongqi Yan,Xinyu Yang,Ping Ning,Chi Wang,Xin Sun,Fei Wang,Peng Gao,Kai Li

In this study, non-thermal plasma (NTP) was employed to modify the Cu/TiO 2 adsorbent to efficiently purify H 2 S in low-temperature and micro-oxygen environments. The effects of Cu loading amounts and atmospheres of NTP treatment on the adsorption-oxidation performance of the adsorbents were investigated. The NTP modification successfully boosted the H 2 S removal capacity to varying degrees, and the optimized adsorbent treated by air plasma (Cu/TiO 2 -Air) attained the best H 2 S breakthrough capacity of 113.29 mg H 2 S/g adsorbent , which was almost 5 times higher than that of the adsorbent without NTP modification. Further studies demonstrated that the superior performance of Cu/TiO 2 -Air was attributed to increased mesoporous volume, more exposure of active sites (CuO) and functional groups (amino groups and hydroxyl groups), enhanced Ti-O-Cu interaction, and the favorable ratio of active oxygen species. Additionally, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated the main reason for the deactivation was the consumption of the active components (CuO) and the agglomeration of reaction products (CuS and SO 4 2− ) occupying the active sites on the surface and the inner pores of the adsorbents.

Thermo-photo synergic effect on methanol steam reforming over mesoporous Cu/TiO2–CeO2 catalysts

Xianglei Liu,Chuang Bao,Zhonghui Zhu,Hangbin Zheng,Chao Song,Qiao Xu

Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is considered as an effective method for hydrogen storage and generating high-quality hydrogen for fuel cells. In this work, mesoporous Cu/TiO 2 –CeO 2 catalysts are proposed to achieve efficient MSR based on synergetic effects of thermal and photon energies . Optimal Ti/Ce molar ratio is found to be 2:1, for which excellent methanol conversion of 100% and extremely low CO selectivity of 2.2% are achieved for thermal catalysis. Further applying UV light (280–400 nm) irradiation while keeping the same temperature, the hydrogen production rate is enhanced to be 78.8 mmol/h/g from 58.6 mmol/h/g. The underlying mechanism is attributed to photogenerated electron hole pairs promoting the REDOX reaction of intermediate product methyl formate based on in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS). This work provides a new method to enhance methanol steam reforming performance via thermo-photo synergic effects, and paves a way for the development of direct solar driven MSR techniques.

A new synthesis method for supported composite oxides: preparation of Ce-Cu/TiO2 catalysts by ice-melting method

Cao Shuang,Zhang Haixiang,Wang Xueman,Peng Miquan,Huang Renhua,Hong Wei,Fu Hailu,Chen Xiongbo,Lin Zejian

In SCR denitrification technology, the conventional coprecipitation method has the disadvantages of high temperature and difficulty in controlling the precipitation rate. Various Ce x CuTiO 2 catalysts were synthesized using ice-melting (Ce x CuTi-Ice) and conventional coprecipitation (Ce x CuTi-Con) methods for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH 3 . Ce 0.4 CuTi-Ice catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity among the Ce x CuTiO 2 catalysts, and 80% NO x conversion was achieved within a temperature range of 250–375 °C, exceeding that of Ce 0.4 CuTi-Con catalyst by 20%; in addition, N 2 selectivity was nearly 100%. To elucidate the release characteristics of the precursor solution during ice-melting synthesis, the changes of Cu and Ce concentrations in the solution were investigated by ICP-OES. The precursor solution was released at a slow rate via the ice-melting method, resulting in a large surface area, small crystallite sizes, and effective uniform nanoparticles with abundant active species and increased surface acidity. The promoted mechanism could be attributed to the enhanced oxidation of NO to NO 2 at low temperatures and the rapid reaction between NO species and coordinated NH 3 at high temperatures. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Integrated p-n/Schottky junctions for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution upon Cu@TiO2-Cu2O ternary hybrids with steering charge transfer

Pei Qiu,Jinyan Xiong,Mengjie Lu,Lijun Liu,Wei Li,Zhipan Wen,Weijie Li,Rong Chen,Gang Cheng

Solar-driven photocatalytic H 2 evolution could tackle the issue of fossil fuels-triggered greenhouse gas emission with sustainable clean energy. However, splitting water into hydrogen with high performance by a single semiconductor is challenging because of the poor charge separation efficiency. Herein, a novel ternary Cu@TiO 2 -Cu 2 O hybrid photocatalyst with multiple charge transfer channels has been designed for efficient solar-to-hydrogen evolution. Indeed, the ternary Cu@TiO 2 -Cu 2 O hybrid by coupling Cu@TiO 2 with Cu 2 O nanoparticles shows highly-efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation with rate of 12000.6 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is 4.4, 2.1, and 1.9 times higher than the pure TiO 2 (2728.8 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ), binary Cu@TiO 2 (5595.5 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ), and TiO 2 -Cu 2 O (6076.8 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) composite, respectively. In such a Cu@TiO 2 -Cu 2 O hybrid, the formed internal electric field in the TiO 2 -Cu 2 O p-n junction allows the electrons in Cu 2 O to migrate to TiO 2 , while the electrons in the CB of TiO 2 could flow into Cu via the Schottky junction at the Cu@TiO 2 interface. In this regard, a multiple charge transfer is achieved between the Cu@TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, which facilitates promoted charge separation and results in the construction of electron-accumulated center (Cu) and hole-enriched surface (Cu 2 O). This p-n/Schottky junctions with steered charge transfer assists the hydrogen production upon the Cu@TiO 2 -Cu 2 O ternary photocatalyst.

N-Methylation of N-Methylaniline with Carbon Dioxide and Molecular Hydrogen over a Heterogeneous Non-Noble Metal Cu/TiO2 Catalyst

Ke Liu,Zhenbo Zhao,Weiwei Lin,Qiang Liu,Qifan Wu,Ruhui Shi,Chao Zhang,Haiyang Cheng,Masahiko Arai,Fengyu Zhao

Graphical Another drop of copper : A non-noble metal catalyst of Cu/TiO 2 is effective for the heterogeneous N -methylation of N -methylaniline with CO 2 and H 2 , in which CHO* is formed as methyl reagent, and it reacts with N -methylaniline to produce intermediate N -methylformanilide followed by its hydrogenation to N,N -dimethylaniline. A non-noble heterogeneous catalyst of Cu/TiO 2 was prepared for N -methylation of N -methylaniline (MA) with CO 2 and H 2 . 5 wt.–% Cu loaded TiO 2 (P25) catalyst exhibited a high performance, with 82 % MA conversion and 98 % N,N -dimethylaniline (DMA) selectivity under the reaction conditions used (4 MPa H 2 , 2 MPa CO 2 , 180 °C, 36 h). The Cu/TiO 2 catalyst was more effective with respective to the total conversion and the DMA selectivity as compared to 5 wt.–% Cu loaded catalysts on CeO 2 , ZnO and activated carbon materials. The possible active species of Cu/TiO 2 catalyst should be both Cu + and Cu 0 which contributed to the high activity as the reaction conversion increased linearly with them exposed on the surface of catalyst. Moreover, the reaction pathways involved were studied; it was likely that the reaction took place via an intermediate of formaldehyde that was formed from CO 2 and H 2 , as confirmed by in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, then it reacted with MA to give N -methylformanilide (MFA), and finally MFA was hydrogenated to DMA.

Effect of humic acid on visible light photocatalytic inactivation of bacteriophage f2 with electrospinning Cu-TiO2 nanofibers: insight into the mechanisms

Cheng Rong,Xia Jin-cheng,Shen Liang-jie,Shen Zhi-peng,Shi Lei,Zheng Xiang,Zheng Jian-zhong

Photocatalytic disinfection is a promising technology with low cost and high efficiency. However, most of the current studies on photocatalytic disinfection ignore the widespread presence of natural organic matter (NOM) in water bodies, so the incomplete conclusions obtained may not be applicable. Herein, this paper systematically studied the influence of humic acid (HA), one of the most important components of NOM, on the photocatalytic inactivation of bacteriophage f2 with electrospinning Cu-TiO 2 nanofibers. We found that with the addition of HA, the light transmittance of the solution at 550 nm decreased from 94 to 60%, and the band gap of the photocatalyst was increased from 2.96 to 3.05 eV. Compared with reacting without HA, the degradation amount of RNA of f2 decreased by 88.7% after HA was added, and the RNA concentration increased from 1.95 to 4.38 ng·μL −1 after the reaction. Hence, we propose mechanisms of the effect of HA on photocatalytic disinfection: photo-shielding, passivation of photocatalysts, quenching of free radicals, and virus protection. Photo-shielding and photocatalyst passivation lead to the decrease of photocatalyst activity, and the reactive oxygen species (ROSs) (·OH, ·O 2 − , 1 O 2 , H 2 O 2 ) are further trapped by HA. The HA in water also can protect the shape of phage f2 and reduce the leakage of protein and the destruction of ribonucleic acid (RNA). This work provides an insight into the mechanisms for the influence of HA in photocatalytic disinfection process and a theoretical basis for its practical application.
