A number of M-Cu-ZSM-5 (M = La, Ni, La-Ni) samples were prepared via an aqueous solution ion-exchange method. The co-doping with Ni and La into a Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst enhanced the NO decomposition activity in a temperature range 350–550 °C. The characterization results indicate that doping with La effectively improved the dispersion of the Cu species forming more Cu 2+ ions in the sample, while the effect of Ni is likely to facilitate the implantation of Cu 2+ to form (Cu 2+ -O 2– -Cu 2+ ) 2+ dimers. The synergistic effect of La and Ni contributes to the increased (Cu 2+ -O 2− -Cu 2+ ) 2+ content in the co-doped sample, thus enhancing the NO decomposition activity.

BACKGROUND Cu-ZSM-5 was prepared on paper-like sintered stainless steel fibers (PSSF) by ion-exchange method for the catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of phenol in a fixed bed reactor. The prepared Cu-ZSM-5/PSSF catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunner−Emmet−Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform InfraRed (FT-IR), Ultraviolet–visiblespectroscopy (UV–vis) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). RESULTS The XRD results showed that the ZSM-5 membrane was loaded well over PSSF with good crystallinity, even after the process of ion-exchange. The UV–vis inferred that isolated copper was the predominant species over ZSM-5 pores of the catalyst. Then, the effects of different catalyst bed heights, reaction temperatures, and feed flow rates on catalytic performance were investigated to obtain optimum reaction conditions. CONCLUSIONS Finally, the catalytic reaction kinetics analysis over Cu-ZSM-5/PSSF catalyst were carried out with the Power-rate Law Kinetic model. The experimental results showed that the reaction order was the first-order reaction, and the activation energy of the oxidation reaction was Ea = 72.9 kJ/mol. The initial oxidation rate equation (−r A0 = 5.36 × 10 8 e −72 994/RT C A ) was obtained for phenol degradation using Cu-ZSM-5/PSSF catalyst. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

A heterogeneous catalyst (Cu/ZSM-5) was prepared by a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method under nitrogen atmosphere using Cu(acac) 2 as the copper precursor, and further characterized by XRD , AAS , SEM, BET, H 2 -TPR and XPS as well as catalytic activity performance for the oxidation of toluene. N 2 adsorption data revealed that the samples (CVD-4) prepared by MOCVD with calcination at 500 °C for 4 h possessed higher surface areas than that (CVD-BC) not calcined. The results of XPS demonstrated that CVD-4 exhibited higher redox property and more surface oxygen species compared with CVD-BC and IM (Cu/ZSM-5 catalyst prepared by impregnation). In particular, the CVD-4 catalysts prepared by MOCVD with calcinations showed the highest catalytic activity for toluene oxidation with 90% conversion of toluene at 293 °C with the feed concentration of 1000 ppm and GHSV of 15,000 h −1 , which was lower than IM (310 °C). The results of a reaction durability test revealed that the Cu/ZSM-5 catalysts prepared by MOCVD possessed excellent durability for toluene oxidation for 63 h, while the conversion of toluene fell down from 90% to 60% after 48 h over IM catalyst.

Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by chemical vapour deposition for catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of phenol in a fixed bed reactor. Firstly, Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts with Cu loading of 0.5, 2, and 6 wt% were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The characterization results demonstrated that CuO was uniformly dispersed on ZSM-5 with slight effect on the structure properties of the support. Then, several variables, such as the copper loading, reaction temperature, catalyst bed height and feed flow rate were investigated in the CWPO of phenol in aqueous solution at high concentration (1000 ppm). Compared with the catalyst prepared by the impregnation method, the Cu-ZSM-5 prepared by chemical vapour deposition has a better capacity of further oxidizing the intermediate organic products into carbon dioxide and water with less metal loading. Based on the Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst with Cu loading of 6 wt%, complete removal of phenol and a high TOC reduction (around 70%) have been achieved at the temperature of 80°C feed flow rate of 2 ml min−1 and catalyst bed height of 3 cm. Moreover, this catalyst maintained high catalytic activity after three runs with high phenol conversion (94%) under this optimum operating condition. Finally, the reaction mechanism was studied based on the intermediates detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Pt@Cu-ZSM-5@CuO x catalyst was constructed for the catalytic oxidation of acetonitrile (AN), which achieved a complete mineralization rate and more than 95 % N 2 selectivity within 300–450 °C. Characterization results revealed that the satisfactory synergistic action of hydrolysis and oxidation pathways was well achieved. The NO x release from CN oxidation reaction on out-layer CuO x species and NH x species over-oxidation over Pt sites could be eliminated by NH 3 from CN hydrolysis reaction on Cu ions via internal selective catalytic reduction mechanism. The deep oxidation of carbon-containing intermediates (such as CO etc.) during CN decomposition over Cu species effectively occurred over Pt site. The encapsulation of Pt inner ZSM-5 zeolite not only strengthened low-temperature mineralization rate compared to Cu/ZSM-5 sample, but also inhibited NO x release caused by over-oxidation of AN at an elevated temperature with co-impregnation of Pt species over Cu/ZSM-5. This work provided a viable strategy for designing catalysts to effective abatement of NVOCs.

The industrial utilization of methane to methanol is based on the indirect pathway with syngas as an intermediate product, but the reaction conditions are very harsh and the costs in equipment and operations are extremely high. Therefore, the direct oxidation of methane to methanol (DOMTM) under mild conditions is more desirable. In this paper, coupling of non-thermal plasma and Cu–zeolite (Cu–ZSM-5 and Cu–S-1) catalysts have been studied for DOMTM. The effect of Si/Al ratios (Cu–ZSM-5 and Cu–S-1 catalysts) on the reaction performance has been investigated. Cu–S-1 catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance, i.e., 5.8% methane conversion and 50.6% methanol selectivity. The employed catalysts have been characterized by XRD, UV–Vis, XPS and FT-IR. The results show that Cu–ZSM-5 catalysts with high Si/Al ratio are conducive to the formation of isolated Cu 2+ species, and Cu–S-1 catalyst exhibits the most abundant isolated Cu 2+ species. Furthermore, Cu–S-1 catalyst shows the most abundant O ads species. The plentiful surface silicon defects on S-1 is the reason why Cu–S-1 catalyst shows the most abundant isolated Cu 2+ and O ads species, and these two species are interdependent to form a Si–O–Cu species, which may be the active site for DOMTM. Based on these findings, the possible catalytic mechanism was proposed.

A novel hierarchical Cu/ZSM-5 was prepared over alkaline treatment and incipient wet impregnation method for the catalytic ozonation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Under the optimum preparation conditions, hierarchical Cu/ZSM-5 exhibited an excellent mineralization performance during the PVA degradation process, and the removal rate of TOC after 60 min of reaction was 47.86%, much higher than that of ozonation alone (5.40%). Its high catalytic activity could attribute to the large pore volume (0.27 cm 3 /g) and pore size (6.51 nm) which are beneficial for the distribution of loaded copper and adsorption performance for PVA. Compared to ·OH, 1 O 2 (2.66 times in 10 min) contributed more to the removal of PVA. The degradation of PVA was a combined process of direct ozone oxidation, catalytic ozonation and adsorption. With its high catalytic performance and stability, hierarchical Cu/ZSM-5 has a very broad application prospect in the process of catalytic ozonation of refractory pollutants.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a widely used sulfonamide antibiotic, is a persistent aquatic pollutant due to its resistance to conventional treatment. Here, a Cu-ZSM-5/Ti 3 C 2 composite catalyst was fabricated by electrostatic self-assembly for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Characterization by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and zeta potential analysis confirmed the successful integration of the components. The catalyst achieved 97.59% removal of 10 mg/L SMX within 30 min. Quenching and EPR results indicated that 1 O 2 was the major reactive species. The enhanced performance under alkaline conditions was associated with the negatively charged composite surface (-38.8 mV at pH 9), the deprotonated state of SMX, and favorable interfacial interactions that may promote preferential oxidation of the isoxazole moiety. Control experiments using a physically mixed sample showed markedly lower activity, especially at pH 11, highlighting the importance of the intimate heterointerface created by self-assembly. The superior activity was attributed to the synergistic interaction between Cu species in Cu-ZSM-5 and Ti-based sites in Ti 3 C 2 . This work provides insight into designing selective PMS activation catalysts for antibiotic-contaminated water treatment.

Ammonia (NH 3 ) has emerged as a promising zero‑carbon energy source for energy and transportation. However, its utilization leads to the emission of NH 3 , which contributes to PM 2.5 formation and disrupts the global nitrogen cycle. Selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) represents a mainstream technology for NH 3 treatment, yet achieving both sufficient activity and high N 2 selectivity across a broad temperature window remains challenging. Here, a core-shell Pt@Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst was employed for NH 3 catalytic abatement by encapsulating metallic Pt clusters (Pt 0 ) inside the channels of Cu ion-exchanged ZSM-5. The optimal sample achieved a complete NH 3 conversion below 250 °C and maintained over 92% N 2 selectivity from 250 to 500 °C due to the synergism between the Pt Cu dual sites. Mechanistic studies revealed that NH 3 oxidation preferentially occurred on Pt 0 sites with excellent redox capacity to produce N 2 O and NO x at relatively low and high temperatures, respectively. And the presence of Cu ions (Cu δ+ ) could efficiently both inhibit the formation of N 2 O on Pt 0 sites and reduce NO x emission, thereby improving the N 2 selectivity. At relatively low temperatures, NH 3 -solvated Cu + (NH 3 ) 2 could migrate to the adjacent Pt sites and reduce the adsorbed NO* species from NH 3 oxidation, damping the formation of N 2 O. At high temperatures, the NO and NO 2 emitted from Pt 0 sites could be reduced on Cu δ+ sites via a typical selective catalytic reduction. This study provides new insights into the rational design of bifunctional SCO catalysts and offers a comprehensive understanding of the synergistic effects in Pt Cu dual-site systems.

Cu/zeolite catalysts have attracted considerable attention for cold-start applications; however, their efficiency in propylene adsorption remains limited. To address this challenge, Cu/ZSM-5 catalysts with enhanced metal-support interactions were successfully constructed via a seed-assisted, template-mediated synthesis method, leading to improved propylene capture and oxidation efficiency. The catalysts were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), N 2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), NH 3 -TPD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), and in situ infrared spectroscopy to investigate the influence of acid site density and metal-support interactions on propylene adsorption behavior. The results demonstrated that Cu@ZSM-5 catalysts synthesized with different structure-directing agents exhibited distinct acidity profiles and varying strengths of metal-support interaction. Among them, the Cu@ZSM-5-130 sample prepared using the TPAOH template showed a high specific surface area (474 m 2 /g) and a more optimal acidity balance. It was found that an excessive density of strong acid sites can be detrimental to propylene adsorption and oxidation. The intimately associated Cu species within the zeolite matrix facilitated selective adsorption of hydrocarbons, particularly propylene. In situ infrared spectroscopy further revealed a temperature-dependent oxidation pathway of propylene over the Cu@ZSM-5-TPAOH-130 catalyst, starting with epoxide formation at low temperatures, progressing to partial oxidation products ( e.g. , acrolein) at intermediate temperatures, and ultimately yielding complete oxidation products, such as CO 2 and H 2 O at higher temperatures. The selective oxidation of methane to methanol under mild conditions remains a significant challenge due to its stable C-H bond and the propensity for overoxidation of products. Herein, we investigated the Fe- and Cu-modified ZSM-5 catalysts using H2O2as an oxidant for the selective oxidation of methane. It was found that the Fe/Cu ratio had a great impact on methanol yield. The Fe3Cu1displayed the highest methanol yield of 29.7 mmol gcat−1h−1with a selectivity of 80.9% at 70 °C. Further analysis revealed that Fe3Cu1showed the highest Fe3+and Cu+contents. The optimal dual valence cycle not only facilitates the efficient utilization of H2O2, promoting the activation of methane to •CH3at the Fe site, but also suppresses the deep oxidation caused by the Fenton-like effect of Fe/H2O2, thus maintaining the high yield and high selectivity of methanol.
