The Cu 2 O/Cu modified shungite (ShC) absorbent (Cu 2 O/Cu-ShC) was synthesized by hydrothermal method, benefiting from the mineral backbone and Cu 2 O/Cu particles, Cu 2 O/Cu-ShC can remove ~ 96% of I − within 60 min, the batch experiments showed that the I − adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model with maximum adsorption capacity of 10.99 mg/g. The high binding affinity between Cu + and I − contributes effective removal of I − and excellent selectivity at high concentrations of competing ions. This work highlights the feasibility of Cu 2 O/Cu-ShC for the radioactive iodine separation, and provides a promising sorbent material for large-scale purification of radioactive iodine anions in wastewater.

The solar driven reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to high value-added carbon based fuel is a promising solution to mitidate climate and energy problems, however, improving the adsorption and conversion efficiency of CO 2 in the photoreduction process still faces severe challenges. In this work, Cd 0·7 Zn 0·3 Se solid solution was prepared by cation exchange: selenium (Se) vacancies are produced during ion exchange, which promotes the unsaturated coordination of the surrounding metal atoms. The adsorption of diethylenetriamine (DETA) on the surface limits the growth of Cd x Zn 1- x Se crystallites , resulting in insufficient coordination of the surface atoms, which then become active adsorption sites. Furthermore, a heterojunction was formed with Cu 2 O@Cu to accelerate the separation and transfer of photo-induced carriers of Cd 0·7 Zn 0·3 Se, and the optimized Cd 0·7 Zn 0·3 Se/Cu 2 O@Cu (CZS/CC) step-scheme heterojunction exhibited a CO release activity of 50.5 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 3.8 and 10.7 times higher than that of Cd 0·7 Zn 0·3 Se and Cu 2 O@Cu, respectively. This work is expected to open up new insight for the regulation of nanostructures and the design of selective catalysts.

A core–shell structure that can achieve effective adsorption of methyl orange (MO) can be prepared by using 26-facet Cu 2 O as a template for producing copper using a reducing agent. However, there are insufficient studies on this topic. Therefore, in this study, Cu 2 O@Cu composites were synthesized using a two-step liquid-phase reduction method. MO was used as a pollutant to test the adsorption properties of the materials. The adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process followed pseudo-first-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm. The maximum capacity of the adsorbent was 498 mg/g, and the adsorption occurred via spontaneous and exothermic physical adsorption. By the comparison of adsorbent before and after adsorption, it was found that the content of Cu + decreased and that of CuO increased, indicating that the material was oxidized during the adsorption process. Further, FTIR spectroscopy and zeta potential showed that the adsorption mechanism was the electrostatic attraction between positively charged adsorbent and the sulfonic acid group of the MO. Therefore, the porous core-shell structure and the positively charged adsorbent facilitated the adsorption of anionic dyes. 1 TD can be used as an effective adsorbent for MO.

In order to solve the problem of easy aggregation of copper oxides in environmental remediation, it is an effective method to confine copper oxides to suitable substrates. Herein, we design a novel Cu 2 O/Cu@MXene composite with a nanoconfinement structure, and it can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to produce . OH for degradation tetracycline (TC). Results indicated that the MXene with extraordinary multilayer structure and surface negativity could fix the Cu 2 O/Cu nanoparticles in the layer spaces and suppress the agglomeration of nanoparticles. The removal efficiency of TC reached 99.14 % within 30 min, and the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic constant was 0.1505 min −1 , which was 3.2 times that of Cu 2 O/Cu alone. The outstanding catalytic performance attributed that the MXene based on Cu 2 O/Cu@MXene could promote the adsorption of TC and electron transmittal between Cu 2 O/Cu nanoparticles. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of TC was still over 82 % after five cycles. In addition, based on the degradation intermediates provided by LC-MS, two specific degradation pathways were proposed. This study provides a new reference for suppressing the agglomeration of nanoparticles, and broadens the application of MXene materials in the field of environmental remediation.

The complex and time-consuming character of the current methods to synthesize cuprous catalysts hampers use of such compounds as replacements for noble metal catalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants . Herein, we report on the development of a simple one-pot method for synthesis of Cu 2 O/Cu nanoparticles . The method was comprised of adding benzyl alcohol during the process of nanoparticle synthesis, where the amount of benzyl alcohol used determined the content of Cu in the obtained nanoparticles . A thorough physicochemical characterization was carried out for the synthesized nanoparticles, where it was found that they could act as catalysts for ultra-fast degradation of phenolics and dyes. Thus, their catalytic activity for the degradation of 4-nitrophenol, methyl orange, and Congo red were evaluated, where pseudo-first-order kinetics were observed. The percentage degradation and rate constant (k app ) values were, respectively, 98% (in 60 s) and k app = 61.23 × 10 −3 s −1 for 4-nitrophenol, 96% (in 100 s) and k app = 31.5 × 10 −3 s −1 for methyl orange, and 97% (in 100 s) and k app = 35.5 × 10 −3 s −1 for Congo red. Comparisons with previously reported cuprous catalysts for degradation of these compounds revealed that the Cu 2 O/Cu nanoparticles of the present paper exhibited the fastest degradation rates.

The biochar-supported Cu 2 O/Cu composite (Cu 2 O/Cu/BC) was fabricated by direct pyrolysis of hemp hurds pretreated with KOH and CuCl 2 , in which the synchronous carbonization-activation-functionalization was achieved to produce copper-modified biochars. Cu 2 O/Cu/BCs were characterized by XRD , Raman, XPS , SEM and N 2 adsorption-desorption techniques. The adsorption methyl orange by Cu 2 O/Cu/BCs showed that the incorporation of Cu 2 O/Cu has improved the adsorption capacity. The adsorption obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 379.4 mg∙g -1 at 303.5 K. Furthermore, assisted with the photoactivity of Cu 2 O/Cu heterojunction the saturated adsorbent can be regenerated under simulated sunlight, and the re-adsorption capacity was still as high as 77.1% of the fresh adsorbent after six cycles. The regeneration efficiency was much better than traditional thermal regeneration and solvent treatment. This work should allow to provide a convenient preparation of functionalized biochars and to develop solar-driven, self-regenerative sorbents for water decontamination with high efficiency.

In this work, a solar responsive photocathode with the CuS/Cu 2 O/Cu cubic nanoparticles was developed to facilitate the separation of the electron/hole pairs so as to enhance the photoelectrochemical activity. The EIS and LSV results indicated the developed CuS/Cu 2 O/Cu photocathode showed better photoelectrochemical activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction than the Cu 2 O/Cu photocathode. Good stability of the developed CuS/Cu 2 O/Cu photocathode was confirmed by the photocurrent vs time measurement. Besides, the developed CuS/Cu 2 O/Cu photocathode was also assessed by incorporating it into a photocatalytic fuel cell with the lateral design for simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation. It was shown that higher cell performance was achieved than the Cu 2 O/Cu photocathode. The performance of the photocatalytic fuel cell with the developed photocathode was then studied under various operating conditions. Experimental results indicated that increasing the light intensity and the Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte concentration and decreasing the liquid flow rate in the testing range could improve the cell performance. This study provides a new photocathode design for the photocatalytic fuel cell applications and other photoelectrochemical systems.

Nano Cu 2 O/Cu modified activated carbon composite (nano Cu 2 O/Cu-C) was firstly synthesized by a simple and efficient hydrothermal method and used to adsorb iodide ion (I − ) from simulated radioactive wastewater . Nano Cu 2 O/Cu loaded and uniformly distributed on activated carbon with a diameter of 80–100 nm. The composite exhibited excellent adsorption performance, which was primarily attributable to the synergistic effect of nano Cu 2 O/Cu and activated carbon. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model accurately represented the experimental data of I − adsorption. On the basis of the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacity of I − by nano Cu 2 O/Cu-C was 41.2 mg/g, which is significantly higher than pure nano Cu 2 O and activated carbon. The adsorption was affected only slightly by pH and other interfering ions. Additionally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to elucidate the possible adsorption mechanism. This study provides new insight into the fabrication and practical application of high-performance adsorbent in removing radioactive I − from wastewater.

A highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose electrode based on truncated octahedral CuO-modified Cu 2 O@Cu composite was fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method combined with a two-step liquid-phase reduction process. Research on utilizing nanostructures to increase the contact opportunities between electroactive materials and target analytes, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic activity, is currently insufficient. In this study, we employed a reduction method to create a core–shell structure with copper shells encapsulating internal nanomaterials. This structure was designed to provide more active sites for glucose molecules, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic response current of glucose. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the morphology and components of the products obtained from each step, while the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu ternary composites were specifically analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For glucose detection, CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu composite was modified onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as a working electrode for electrochemical performance testing. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) test results indicate that the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu-GCE electrode exhibits a sensitivity of 771 μA cm −2 mM −1 within the glucose concentration range of 0 to 10 mM, with a detection limit of 3.39 μM. Chronoamperometry (CA) results demonstrate that the electrode achieves a sensitivity of 1067 μA cm −2 mM −1 in the glucose concentration range of 0 to 1 mM, with a detection limit of 0.56 μM. Exhibiting a broad linear response range, high sensitivity, minimal detection limit, and robust selectivity against common interferents, the electrode maintained 99 % stability over four days and retained more than 85 % of its current response for two weeks, also showing notable sensitivity in artificial sweat samples. Owing to its simple fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and outstanding electrochemical properties, the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu composite offers significant potential for application in non-enzymatic glucose sensing.

Electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is a promising alternative approach to oxygen evolution reaction for efficient hydrogen production. However, developing highly efficient and cost-effective MOR catalysts, coupled with the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction, is still a challenge. Herein, we used a Ni 2 P nanosheet array with Cu 2 O-Cu dendrites on nickel foam (Cu 2 O-Cu@Ni 2 P/NF) as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for MOR, which attained a low potential of 1.41 V at 100 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 44.99 mV dec –1 with excellent stability for at least 24 h in 1.0 M KOH solution with 1.0 M methanol. In situ Raman spectroscopy reveals that Cu 2 O-Cu promotes the generation of the β-NiOOH active phase, and converts to Cu(II)O under the electrolysis conditions. Furthermore, the methanol electrolysis cell utilizing Cu 2 O-Cu@Ni 2 P/NF as both the cathode and anode delivered a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.40 V, and the cell voltage decreased by 210 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 compared to water electrolysis. This work provides a new strategy to design the promising Ni-based phosphide as a bifunctional electrocatalyst in methanol electrolysis, enabling energy-saving H 2 production.

Compared to traditional haber–bosch process for synthetic ammonia, electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia (ERNA) offers a promising and sustainable technology to generate ammonia at ambient temperature. However, the performance of ERNA is impeded by lacking of sound strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalyst. Here, a Cu based electrode with Cu 2 O/Cu interface was prepared by pulse electrodeposition and electroreduction, achieving the fast rate constant of 0.14 min −1 for reducing nitrate with a high ammonia yield rate of 2.17 mg cm -2 h −1 (faradaic efficiency: 84.36%) and ammonia selectivity of 94.4% at −0.25 V vs. RHE. Particularly, density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the adsorption energy indicated that Cu 2 O/Cu interface alleviated adsorption energy of NO 2 - from −2.02 eV (pure Cu) to −1.59 eV, improving surface diffusion of adsorbed NO 2 - . And DFT calculations for electronic structure implied that Cu 2 O/Cu interface upshifted the d band center of Cu (-2.25 eV vs. −2.48 eV of pure Cu), boosting electron transfer to NO 3 - . Additionally, in-situ infrared spectroscopic analysis confirmed vital intermediates of NO 2 - and NH 2 OH on Cu 2 O/Cu to identify reaction pathway and Gibbs free energy diagram clarified this interface decreased reaction barrier of crucial step (reducing *NO 2 to *NO) from 0.31 eV (pure Cu) to −0.77 eV for the enhancement of ERNA. Thereby, these findings demonstrated that Cu 2 O/Cu interface tunes mobility of NO 2 - and electron transfer to NO 3 - on Cu based electrocatalyst is an efficient method to promote performance of ERNA with high efficiency and rate.
