Graphical Cu-based compound containing Cu 3 N is synthesized through a simple one-step pyrolysis method, applied it to electrocatalytic NO 3 RR, and tested the performance of the Zn-NO 3 − battery. The Cu 3 N exhibits NH 3 yield of 173.7 μmol h −1 cm −2 , with FE NH3 reaching 91.0 % at −0.3 V vs . RHE, which assembles a Zn-NO 3 − battery. Nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) involves an 8-electron transfer process and competes with the hydrogen evolution reaction process, resulting in lower yields and Faraday efficiency (FE) in the process of NH 3 synthesis. Especially, Cu-based catalysts (Cu 0 and Cu + ) have been investigated in the field of NO 3 RR due to the energy levels of d -orbital and the least unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) π * of nitrate's orbital. Based on the above, we synthesized a Cu-based compound containing Cu 3 N (Cu + ) through a simple one-step pyrolysis method, applied it to electrocatalytic NO 3 RR, and tested the performance of the Zn-NO 3 − battery. Through various characterization analyses, Cu-based catalysts (Cu + ) are the key active sites in reduction reactions, making Cu 3 N a potential catalyst for ammonia synthesis. The research results indicate the application of Cu 3 N catalyst in NO 3 RR shows the best NH 3 yield of 173.7 μmol h −1 cm −2 with FE NH3 reaching 91.0 % at −0.3 V vs . RHE, which is much higher than that of Cu catalyst without N. In addition, the Zn-NO 3 − battery based on Cu 3 N electrode also exhibits an NH 3 yield of 39.8 μmol h −1 cm −2 63.0 % FE NH3 , and a power density of 2.7 mW cm −2 as well as stable cycling charge-discharge stability for 5 hours. This work guides the application of Cu 3 N enhanced regulation of the active site in the electrocatalytic synthesis of NH 3 from NO 3 RR.

Copper-based catalysts have been established as highly effective for facilitating the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (ECO 2 RR), particularly in the synthesis of multi-carbon (C 2+ ) compounds. However, issues of product selectivity and reaction stability persist, posing significant challenges in the context of high-current-density industrial applications. In this study, we introduce a Cu-enriched Cu 3 N composite catalyst, synthesized via a straightforward magnetron sputtering technique. This catalyst is capable of activating CO 2 and efficiently adsorbing CO, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic performance for the targeted reactions. At a potential of −1.2 V vs. RHE, the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of the C 2+ product reaches the highest value of 80.39 % with the current density of 267.78 mA cm −2 . Remarkably, the precisely engineered catalyst architecture integrated with a metallic copper (Cu) protective layer demonstrates significantly enhanced ECO 2 RR stability, maintaining C 2+ FE above 79 % for over 10 h at 200 mA cm −2 current density. These results provide a feasible approach for designing and implementing efficient and stable ECO 2 RR catalysts to generate C 2+ products for industrial applications.

In response to the critical issues of delamination and cracking that plague CrN films within oil lubrication systems, this work designed and prepared multilayer alternating sputtering CrN/Cu 3 N films, and investigated the tribological properties under PAO10 lubrication, with particular emphasis on the influence of the composition, structure, coating arrangement and the mechanical properties of these films. The results showed that the composite film CrN/Cu 3 N (FH-Cu), which was alternately sputtered and capped with copper nitride, exhibited the optimal tribological properties, achieved a stable friction coefficient of 0.065 and the lowest wear rate (9.20 ×10 −8 mm 3 ·N −1 ·m −1 ). FIB-TEM analyses and Raman spectra indicated that a lubricating film containing graphene was in-situ generated at the friction interface. The DFT simulation results showed that the adsorption effect of copper nitride on the surface layer of the composite film FH (Cu) reduces the dissociation energy of PAO10 by 48 %. The results of differential charge density and Bader charge indicate that Cu 3 N (100) transfers 0.08e to PAO10 during friction, thereby demonstrating the frictional catalytic mechanism of Cu 3 N at the frictional interface. This work provides important insights into design of high-performance CrN/Cu 3 N composite films, highlighting the interactions among microstructure, catalytic activity, and friction-induced carbon films.

Exploring nonprecious, efficient and stable electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of great importance, but it is also challenging. In this study, N-doped carbon@ CoN/Cu3N/copper foam (namely, NC@CoN/Cu3N/CF) nanoarrays with a hollow tubular structure have been successfully synthesized through a facile method. The as-produced NC@CoN/Cu3N/CF with a 3D hierarchical structure was highly beneficial for electrocatalysis; it displayed improved electrical conductivity, abundant exposed active catalytic sites, numerous “highways” for charge transport and synergistic effect of each component. The enhanced characteristics resulted in largely improved kinetics and activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The NC@CoN/Cu3N/CF electrode exhibited low overpotentials of 303 mV to reach a current density of 50 mA cm−2 for OER and 134 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for HER in an alkaline solution. Furthermore, as an electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, NC@CoN/Cu3N/CF served as both the anode and cathode, delivering a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a quite low cell voltage of 1.62 V, and it displayed excellent long-term stability (15 h at 20 mA cm−2). This study provides a rational strategy and approach to fabricate transition metal nitrides with 3D hierarchical structures as efficient electrocatalysts in renewable energy applications.

Perovskite oxides with flexible compositions and electronic structures have great potential for application in electrocatalytic water oxidation reactions. However, few studies have focused on the application of perovskite oxides in electrocatalytic oxidation reactions of organic molecules, probably due to the absence of active species because of the poor conductivity and high energy barrier of the surface reconstruction. Herein, we report Cu 3 N nanosheets with a typical antiperovskite structure as electrocatalysts for selectively converting methanol to formate. The as-prepared antiperovskite nitride Cu 3 N samples exhibit a Faradic efficiency exceeding 90% for methanol to formate over a wide potential range, which was further confirmed by online electrochemical mass spectrometry and in situ infrared reflectance absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and in situ Raman spectroscopy results indicate that the core-shell structure formed by generating surface Cu(II) species triggers the electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction activity, whereas the pristine Cu 3 N core facilitates the electron transport inside the catalyst during the electrocatalytic process. This study provides a modelable scheme for the highly selective conversion of methanol and introduces a novel nonoxide perovskite material for the electrochemical conversion of small-organic molecules.

Chemoselective hydrogenation of quinoline and its derivatives is widely applicable in fine chemical production, yet it still faces grand challenges to obtain high activity and satisfactory selectivity simultaneously under mild conditions. In this study, we tuned the compositions of metallic Cu and Cu 3 N species by NH 3 treatment on CuO precursor at different temperatures. The specific catalyst after 375 °C treatment demonstrates excellent performance in the chemoselective hydrogenation of quinoline, achieving 98.8% conversion and >99% selectivity of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline under mild reaction conditions (90 °C, 1 MPa), which significantly surpasses the performance of previously reported Cu-based catalysts. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits remarkable stability and substrate versatility. Various characterizations and DFT calculations reveal that there is obviously synergistic effect between metallic Cu and Cu 3 N species. Specifically, metallic Cu facilitates hydrogen dissociation, while Cu 3 N enhances the adsorption of quinoline molecules. These findings highlight the potential of Cu-based catalyst with dual active sites as a robust and efficient alternative for chemoselective hydrogenation.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using solar energy as a driving force is considered to be one of the most promising approaches to alleviate energy and environmental problems. However, the problem of low solar conversion efficiency resulted from the easy recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in semiconductor catalysts needs to be solved urgently. Theoretical calculations were firstly taken to prove that copper nitride (Cu 3 N) exhibits a matched D-band center position and hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (ΔG H∗ ), which can improve the H 2 adsorption/desorption balance and then achieve an effective promotion of photogenerated charge kinetics. Cu 3 N was herein chosen as a co-catalyst to enhance photocatalytic HER performance. Two-dimensional carbon nitride (2D CN) was chosen as the catalyst due to the layer structure which could shorten electronic transmission distance. The results showed that the HER activity of Cu 3 N/2D CN is 117 times higher than that of 2D CN (2721.55 vs. 23.18 μmol/g/h) and an apparent quantum yield of 3.78% at 420 nm. Compared with other Cu(I)-based composite catalysts, Cu 3 N/2D CN also exhibits the highest HER activity. This work investigates the transfer process of photogenerated carriers and reveals the photocatalytic mechanism through a combination of theoretical calculations and experimental characterization.

Rational interfacial engineering is crucial to designing non-precious electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here we report a Cu3N/1T-MoS2 heterojunction in which ultrathin 1T-MoS2 nanosheets are conformally grown on conductive p-type Cu3N nanocubes. Spectroscopy and microscopy reveal intimate lattice contact and interfacial strain, while XPS indicates charge redistribution across the junction. In 0.5 M H2SO4, the optimized 1:1 composite delivers an overpotential of 387 mV at 50 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 57 mV dec−1, outperforming both constituents (MoS2 ≈ 456 mV; Cu3N inactive at this current density). Continuous operation for 150 h demonstrates excellent acid stability. Electrochemical impedance and double-layer capacitance analyses show the lowest charge-transfer resistance and the highest electrochemically active surface area among all samples (Cdl = 103.6 mF cm−2), corroborating rapid electron transport and abundant accessible sites. The activity enhancement arises from a p–n heterojunction with a built-in field that promotes directional electron flow to MoS2 active edges, together with strain-induced defect exposure. This work identifies Cu3N as an effective platform to stabilize conductive MoS2 and provides design rules for interface-engineered HER catalysts.

Transition metal nitride (TMN)-based nanostructures have emerged as promising materials for diverse applications in electronics, photonics, energy storage, and catalysis due to their highly desirable physicochemical properties. However, synthesizing TMN-based nanostructures with designed compositions and morphologies poses challenges, especially in the solution phase. The cation exchange reaction (CER) stands out as a versatile postsynthetic strategy for preparing nanostructures that are otherwise inaccessible through direct synthesis. Nevertheless, exploration of the CER in TMNs lags behind that in metal chalcogenides and metal phosphides. Here, we demonstrate cation exchange in colloidal metal nitride nanocrystals, employing Cu3N nanocrystals as starting materials to synthesize Ni4N and CoN nanocrystals. By controlling the reaction conditions, Cu3N@Ni4N and Cu3N@CoN core@shell heterostructures with tunable compositions can also be obtained. The Ni4N and CoN nanocrystals are evaluated as catalysts for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Remarkably, CoN nanocrystals demonstrate superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 286 mV at 10 mA·cm–2, a small Tafel slope of 89 mV·dec–1, and long-term stability. Our CER approach in colloidal TMNs offers a new strategy for preparing other metal nitride nanocrystals and their heterostructures, paving the way for prospective applications.

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction to multi‑carbon products offers a sustainable route to fuels and chemicals, yet suffers from sluggish C C coupling and competing hydrogen evolution. Here, we report a rationally engineered Cu 3 N/Cu@C heterostructure catalyst that delivers markedly enhanced CO 2 electroreduction performance. The optimized catalyst achieves a 65.3% Faradaic efficiency toward multi‑carbon products and a half-cell energy efficiency of 35.3% at −1.1 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Combined in situ attenuated total reflectance surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal that interfacial charge transfer at the Cu 3 N/Cu junction modulates the electronic structure of Cu sites, elevates local pH, strengthens CO 2 adsorption and activation, and suppresses hydrogen evolution. Importantly, the tailored interface facilitates asymmetric C C coupling between *CO and *COH intermediates, stabilizing the key *OCCOH species and accelerating multi‑carbon products formation. This work underscores heterointerface engineering as a powerful strategy to control reaction microenvironments and C C coupling pathways, guiding the development of high-performance copper-based CO 2 reduction reaction catalysts.

The development of efficient and stable cuprous-oxide-based photocathodes for CO 2 reduction is hindered by the intrinsic trade-off between rapid photocorrosion and inefficient charge separation. Herein, we construct a Cu 2 O@Cu 3 N heterojunction photocathode featuring a unique hierarchical architecture, which integrates atomic-scale coherent interfaces (N–Cu–O bonds) with microscale geometric field enhancement from abundant nanoscale tips at pore vertices. This rational integration is designed to simultaneously improve charge transport and favor reactant accumulation at the active sites. As a result, the optimized electrode achieves a CO Faradaic efficiency of 96% at a mild potential, maintains >90% selectivity across a broad voltage window, and operates stably for over 3 h. This work demonstrates that co-designing atomic-scale interfaces and microscale morphology is a powerful pathway to high-performance solar fuel generation.
