CO2 adsorption performance of CuBTC/graphene aerogel composites

Ren Wen,Wei Zhenzhen,Xia Xiaoxiao,Hong Zhiwei,Li Song

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as promising adsorbents for carbon capture due to their ultrahigh surface areas and tunable properties. However, a majority of MOFs have strict requirements for preparation and high mass transfer resistance that limits the gas separation time. In order to improve the applicability of MOFs to practical applications, herein, we reported an experimental approach to prepare structured CuBTC/graphene aerogel (GA) composites using ionic liquid (IL) additives (CuBTC/GA-IL) at room temperature for CO 2 capture. The material was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area analysis, and CO 2 adsorption tests. It was demonstrated that CuBTC/GA-IL exhibited the higher CO 2 uptake than CuBTC/GA prepared without IL additives. Besides, the breakthrough experiments have shown that CuBTC/GA-IL exhibited the lower mass transfer resistance compared with CuBTC-IL and good cyclability. The effective approach of fabricating CuBTC into GA using IL additives to improve CO 2 adsorption in this study may be extensively applied for other MOF-based composites. Graphical abstract

Elevated performance of hybrid membranes by incorporating metal organic framework CuBTC for pervaporative desulfurization of gasoline

Shengnan Yu,Zhongyi Jiang,Weidong Li,Josue Quispe Mayta,He Ding,Yimeng Song,Zhe Li,Zhiwei Dong,Fusheng Pan,Baoyi Wang,Peng Zhang,Xingzhong Cao

Metal organic framework CuBTC nanoparticles were incorporated into polyether-block-amide (Pebax) to promote the transport of penetrant molecules in the membranes. The CuBTC nanoparticles can form hydrogen-bonds with the Pebax chains, thus interfered with the chain packing and tailored the free volume properties of Pebax. The channels and active metal sites of CuBTC promoted the transport of sulfur-containing molecules when the membranes were employed for gasoline desulfurization. When the filler content was 2   wt%, the optimal separation performance was achieved with a permeation flux of 4.4   kg/(m 2   h) and a thiophene enrichment factor of 6.0 at 40   °C, increased by 36% and 11% compared with the Pebax pristine membrane. The comprehensive performance of the membranes is more competitive than widely-used PDMS membranes, especially under high temperatures. A permeation flux of 16.45   kg/(m 2   h) is reached with an enrichment factor of 4.04 at 70   °C.

Elevated pervaporation performance of polysiloxane membrane using channels and active sites of metal organic framework CuBTC

Shengnan Yu,Zhongyi Jiang,He Ding,Fusheng Pan,Baoyi Wang,Jing Yang,Xingzhong Cao

Hybrid membranes with polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) as the polymer matrix and metal organic framework (MOF) CuBTC ([Cu 3 (BTC) 2 ]) as the filler were fabricated and applied in pervaporative separation of thiophene from model gasoline. CuBTC submicroparticles with size of 0.2–0.3   μm were synthesized through a facile method at room temperature. The morphology, crystal structure and pore parameters of CuBTC, together with the morphology, functional groups, thermal and mechanical property, free volume characteristics, sorption and separation performance of PDMS–CuBTC hybrid membranes were studied. Primary functions of CuBTC particles are summarized as follows: (i) the channels of CuBTC provide expressways with low resistance for the transport of permeates; (ii) the submicroparticles interfere with the packing of PDMS chains, generating extra free volume of the membrane; (iii) the active metal sites of CuBTC facilitate the transport of thiophene; and (iv) the channels of CuBTC sieve thiophene from the bulk of model gasoline. As a result, the normalized flux and selectivity of PDMS membranes are elevated simultaneously. The optimal separation performance is achieved when the weight ratio of normal CuBTC to PDMS reaches 8%, with a permeation flux of 194.2   kg   μm/(m 2   h) and an enrichment factor of 5.2 (increase by 100% and 75% compared with PDMS control membrane, respectively).

Thermal Activation of CuBTC MOF for CO Oxidation: The Effect of Activation Atmosphere

Xiuling Zhang,Zhibin Zhan,Zhuang Li,Lanbo Di

High performance catalysts for carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation were obtained through thermal activation of a CuBTC (BTC: 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) metal–organic framework (MOF) in various atmospheres. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photonelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N2adsorption–desorption measurement, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were adopted to characterize the catalysts. The results show that thermal activation by reductive H2may greatly destroy the structure of CuBTC. Inert Ar gas has a weak influence on the structure of CuBTC. Therefore, these two catalysts exhibit low CO oxidation activity. Activating with O2is effective for CuBTC catalysts, since active CuO species may be obtained due to the slight collapse of CuBTC structure. The highest activity is obtained when activating with CO reaction gas, since many pores and more effective Cu2O is formed during the thermal activation process. These results show that the structure and chemical state of coordinated metallic ions in MOFs are adjustable by controlling the activation conditions. This work provides an effective method for designing and fabricating high performance catalysts for CO oxidation based on MOFs.

Synthesis optimization of CuBTC derived carbon-zeolite supported copper-based catalyst for toluene catalytic oxidation

Jie Liu,Wenju Jiang,Zhongde Dai,Lu Yao,Junfeng Zheng,Dengrong Sun,Lin Yang

MOF/zeolite-derived composite catalysts represent a promising platform for designing high-efficiency catalytic systems for the abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, carbon-zeolite-supported Cu-C/Y catalysts were synthesized from CuBTC and Y-zeolite composites by systematically screening parameters such as the metal-to-ligand molar ratio, hydrothermal conditions, and ion concentration. These parameters directly influenced the structural properties and toluene oxidation performance. Key findings revealed that the deprotonation degree of H 3 BTC ligands and their coordination with Cu 2+ ions critically governed CuBTC nucleation dynamics. Excessive deprotonation weakened the interfacial interactions with the Y-zeolite substrates. The optimal conditions ([Cu]:[H 3 BTC] = 1.9, [Cu] = 22.3 mmol, 80 °C hydrothermal reacted for 12 h) balanced nucleation and crystal growth, producing hierarchically porous structures with enhanced crystallinity and uniformly dispersed active sites. The resulting Cu-C/Y- ht 12 exhibited superior redox activity, with a T 90 of 262.5 °C for toluene catalytic oxidation. Response surface methodology (RSM) identified the ideal parameters [Cu]:[H 3 BTC] = 1.9, [Cu] = 20.1 mmol, 69 °C for 17.4 h, yielding Cu-C/Y R catalyst with a T 90 of 261.0 °C. These results provide theoretical and practical guidance for the optimization of MOF/zeolite-derived catalysts for VOCs treatment.

The fabrication of CuBTC@PW12 with prominent peroxidase-mimicking activity for colorimetric detection of H2O2 and ascorbic acid via “on–off” switch

Wanyu Song,Peng Sun,Jihong Zhou,Xu Han,Qijun Dai,Fang Chai

The Keggin phosphotungstic acid (PW12) embedded metal–organic framework copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (CuBTC), CuBTC@PW12, was fabricated by a facile hydrothermal synthesis technique. With a unique tetrakaidecahedron structure and multiple active sites, the obtained CuBTC@PW12 exhibited peroxidase-mimicking activity, which promoted a novel strategy for qualitative and quantitative detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and sequential sensing of ascorbic acid (AA) via colorimetric evolution. Notably, with the advantages of strong redox performance of POMs and the unique porous structure of metal organic frameworks (MOFs), as peroxidase mimics, CuBTC@PW12 achieved highly selective and sensitive detection of H2O2via oxidizing TMB to a blue oxidation product (ox-TMB), with a limit of detection of 2.67 μM within the 0.01 to 1.0 mM scale. Concomitantly, the AA can be monitored consecutively by reducing the ox-TMB with fading blue color quantitatively with a limit of detection at 0.15 μM in the range of 0.01–0.10 μM. The recoveries for the determination of AA in human serum were obtained at 94.63–105%. These results manifested that CuBTC@PW12 could be used as a peroxide-mimetic enzyme for the continuous detection of H2O2 and AA with the advantages of simplicity, efficiency, sensitivity and accuracy.

Xiang Dong,Xiaoyu Jiang,Zhiyu Sun,Yan Ma,Yan Li,Zixin Lin,Shibin Nie,Konghu Tian

For the application of intelligent equipment in fire rescue and anti-terrorism, the urgent need of shell materials with comprehensive performance, including radar wave absorption and fire safety, is raised. This study presents the epoxy resin (EP) composite incorporating a floral-structured bimetallic Co/Ni@CuBTC (ACM) with enhanced EMW absorption, flame retardancy and thermal management. The results show that the absorption rate of ACM at 3 mm thickness reaches -42.25 dB for 11.5 GHz EMW, and the dissipation to radar waves at -180 o to 180 o in radar cross section (RCS) simulation reaches -40.2 dB. The EP composite with 5 wt% ACM can block cell phone (800 MHz) and Bluetooth signals (2.4 GHz) at 3 mm thickness. The EP composite with 3 wt% ACM-3 (EP/ACM 3 %) presented the lowest peak heat release rate of 811.2 kW·m -2 , which decreased by 39.5 % compared with pure EP, meanwhile it reached the V-1 rate in UL-94 test, showing a significant improvement in flame retardancy. The thermal conductivity (λ) of EP/ACM 3 % reached 0.811 Wm -1 K -1 , which is 21.9 % higher than that of pure EP, reducing the risk of heat accumulation. The EP/ACM composite, with its integrated capabilities in EMW absorption, flame retardant and thermal management, holds promising applications in unmanned fire rescue and anti-terrorism in future.

Enhanced Stability and Performance of Immobilized Lipase Using Hydrophobically Modified Single-Crystalline Ordered Macro–Microporous CuBTC as a Carrier Material

Zeqing Liu,Lingmei Dai,Dehua Liu,Wei Du

Single-crystalline ordered macro–microporous CuBTC (SOM–CuBTC) is a promising carrier for lipase immobilization due to enhanced mass transfer and stability toward fatty acids. However, the low yield per mass of the template during the preparation process and the water instability of the SOM–CuBTC carrier have posed significant limitations on its practical applications. In this study, we addressed these challenges by introducing a novel dual-solvent system consisting of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethanol to obtain a stable precursor solution with a concentration approximately 10 times higher than that in previous literature, yielding 21.4 mg of SOM–CuBTC per gram of the polystyrene template. However, the decomposition of SOM–CuBTC in an aqueous system of lipase immobilization was observed. We explored chemical vapor deposition and sol–gel methods for hydrophobic modification on SOM–CuBTC. SOM–CuBTC coated by hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via the sol–gel method possessed excellent chemical stability and exhibited great potential for lipase immobilization with a significant increase by 98.7% in the specific activity. The obtained immobilized lipase not only showed improved thermal stability and pH tolerance but also displayed excellent catalytic performance in the synthesis process of 1-oleoyl-2-palmitoyl-3-linoleoylglycerol (OPL) by acidolysis. This work reveals the great potential of SOM–CuBTC and provides new insights into the rational design of metal–organic frameworks for enzyme immobilization in extensive applications.

Enhancing water resistance of metal-organic frameworks

Shufan Li,Jianquan Li,Qingyu Ma

Developing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high water resistance is of high significance because it can largely extend their applications, such as catalysis and adsorption in aqueous solutions. Herein, we present a typical MOF, i.e., CuBTC [Cu 3 (BTC) 2 (H 2 O) 3 ] n (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) with high water resistance by post-modification reactions with six commercially available silanes at room temperature, resulting in CuBTC@SILANE. Various techniques demonstrated that the modification successfully incorporates organosilicon moieties on the surface of CuBTC without altering its original structure, significantly enhancing its water resistance. In contrast to pristine CuBTC, CuBTC@SILANE maintains its crystallinity, morphology, and pore structure even after prolonged exposure to water. The modified MOF also exhibits superior stability in various solvents and enhances CO 2 adsorption efficiency, retaining high CO 2 adsorption capacity even after exposure to water for 1 day. This simple silane modification approach not only addresses the water sensitivity of CuBTC but also holds promise for extending the aqueous applications of other similar MOFs, thereby broadening their potential uses in catalysis and adsorption.

Improved Desulfurization Performance of Polyethyleneglycol Membrane by Incorporating Metal Organic Framework CuBTC

Caibin Cai,Xiaotao Fan,Xiaolong Han,Jiding Li,Harsh Vardhan

In this paper, copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (CuBTC) was incorporated into polyethylenglyol (PEG) to prepare a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) for pervaporation desulfurization. The characterization results showed that the prepared CuBTC particles had an ideal octahedral shape and micropores. The Cu2+in CuBTC interacts with thiophene via π-complexation, thus enhancing the separation performance of the hybrid membranes. The effect of CuBTC content and the operating condition on the pervaporation performance of the MMMs was investigated. An optimal pervaporation separation performance was acquired with a permeation flux of 2.21 kg/(m2·h) and an enrichment factor of 8.79, which were increased by 100% and 39% compared with the pristine PEG membrane. Moreover, the CuBTC-filled PEG membrane showed a good stability in the long-term desulfurization under a high operating temperature of 75 °C for five days. Keywords:CuBTC nanoparticles;mixed matrix membranes;pervaporation desulfurization

Fabrication and Characteristics of Mn@ Cu3(BTC)2 for Low-Temperature Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3

Zhuo Yao,Dianli Qu,Yuxiang Guo,Yujing Yang,Hong Huang

Novel catalysts with high activity for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 (NH3-SCR) at low temperatures are highly demanded. In this study, mixed-node metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), e.g. Mn@CuBTC with controlled Mn composition in Cu3(BTC)2, were fabricated using postsynthetic exchange method and their structural characteristics and catalytic performances for NH3-SCR reaction were assessed. A series of analyses in terms of structure, surface morphology, texture, and chemical state determined that Mn ions were successfully incorporated into the Cu3(BTC)2 crystal lattice as well as adsorbed on the walls of nanopores in the framework. The pore sizes can be finely tuned in the presence of Mn ions in the cages, which significantly suppressed water adsorption. The NH3-SCR activity of Mn@CuBTC exhibited nearly 100% NOx conversion rate in the temperature range (230–260°C). The superior NH3-SCR performance is attributed to the proper pore sizes, reduced water content, and the synergistic effect between manganese and copper ions in the MOF structure, which enhanced NH3 bound to the active Lewis sites.

CuBTC-derivatives engineered into aerogel for water remediation: Solar-thermal desalination and pollutant degradation via peroxymonosulfate activation

Hongxiang Shu,Congming Tang,Xinli Li,Zhi Chen

Integrating derivatives of Cu-organic frameworks (CuBTC) into robust macroscopic architectures while preserving their intrinsic porosity and multifunctionality is crucial for advancing their practical application in environmental technologies. Herein, a multifunctional CuBTC-derivatives aerogel is engineered via a facile sol–gel process followed by vacuum drying for high-performance water purification. The resulting monolithic aerogel exhibits a hierarchically porous three-dimensional network with exceptional structural integrity and stability. This architecture demonstrates outstanding solar-thermal conversion capabilities, enabling highly efficient solar-driven interfacial desalination with an elevated evaporation rate and remarkable energy efficiency. Under 1 sun, the CuBTC-350-aerogel evaporator achieved water evaporation rate of 2.06 kg m⁻²h⁻¹ and efficiency of 91.5 % for pure water. The evaporator demonstrated exceptional stability, maintaining its evaporation capacity over 15 consecutive cycles of seawater desalination. Additionally, it exhibited remarkable salt-rejection performance, as evidenced by the rapid dissolution of 0.5 g of salt crystals pre-deposited on its surface under illumination. Moreover, the CuBTC-350 aerogel acts as a superior peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator, facilitating the rapid generation of active species for the effective degradation of organic pollutants, such as tetracycline (TC) and methyl orange (MO). The synergistic coupling of solar desalination and catalytic oxidation in one integrated aerogel system offers a sustainable and versatile platform for comprehensive water treatment, harnessing solar energy simultaneously for freshwater production and contaminant destruction.
