A novel organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite crystal, [ClC6H4(CH2)2NH3]2CuBr4 (1), having experienced an invertible high-temperature phase transition near Tc (the Curie temperature Tc = 355 K), has been successfully synthesized. The phase-transition characteristics for compound 1 are thoroughly revealed by specific heat capacity (Cp), differential thermal analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry tests, possessing 16 K broad thermal hysteresis. Multiple-temperature powder X-ray diffraction analysis further proves the phase-transition behavior of compound 1. Moreover, compound 1 exhibits a significant steplike dielectric response near Tc, revealing that it can be deemed to be a promising dielectric switching material. The variable-temperature fluorescence experiments show distinct photoluminescence (PL) changes of compound 1. Further investigation and calculation disclose that the fluorescence lifetime of compound 1 can reach as long as 55.46 μs, indicating that it can be a potential PL material. All of these researches contribute a substitutable avenue in the design and construction of neoteric phase-transition compounds combining high Curie temperature and PL properties.

The toxicity and the instability of lead-based perovskites might eventually hamper the commercialization of perovskite solar cells. Here, we present the optoelectronic properties and stability of a two-dimensional layered (C6H5CH2NH3)2CuBr4 perovskite. This material has a low Eg of 1.81 eV and high absorption coefficient of ∼1 × 105 cm–1 at the most intensive absorption at 539 nm, implying that it is suitable for light-harvesting in thin film solar cells, especially in tandem solar cells. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption spectra, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirm the high stability toward humidity, heat, and ultraviolet light. Initial studies produce a mesoscopic solar cell with a power conversion efficiency of 0.2%. Our work may offer some useful inspiration for the further investigation of environment-friendly and stable organic–inorganic perovskite photovoltaic materials.

A Dion–Jacobson lead-free copper perovskite (BDA)CuBr₄ with a narrow 4.5 Å interlayer spacing. • Single-crystal X-ray detector achieves high sensitivity of 520.2 μC Gy⁻¹ cm⁻² at 50 V. • Detection limit as low as 283 nGy s⁻¹, well below the medical diagnostic dose rate. • Strong N–H···Br hydrogen bonding and tight stacking ensure excellent long-term stability. Metal halide perovskite materials, especially lead-based systems, have become a research hotspot for high-performance X-ray detectors due to their excellent optical absorption coefficients and high carrier mobilities. However, the environmental and biological risks associated with lead-containing components hinders their widespread commercial adoption, making the development of lead-free alternatives an urgent priority. Copper-based perovskites show considerable promise because of their non-toxicity and abundant raw material reserves, but their X-ray detection performance and stability still require further improvement. In this work, a Dion–Jacobson (DJ)-type lead-free copper-based perovskite, (BDA)CuBr₄, was synthesized via a slow cooling solution method. The incorporation of the diamine 1,4-butanediamine (BDA) enables adjacent inorganic layers to be connected through covalent bonds, which not only enhances structural stability but also results in a narrow interlayer spacing of 4.5 Å, thereby facilitating efficient interlayer carrier transport. The single-crystal X-ray detector fabricated from this material delivers outstanding performance: a sensitivity of 520 μC Gy -1 cm -2 at a bias of 50 V, an extremely low dark current drift of 4.21 × 10 -6 nA cm -1 s -1 V -1 , and a limit of detection as low as 283 nGy s⁻¹. No evident fatigue is observed under multiple on/off switching cycles at high-dose-rate X-ray irradiation, and the device performance remains stable after 60 days of storage. This lead-free copper-based perovskite provides an effective solution to balance the performance and environmental compatibility of conventional detection materials, paving the way for the development of next‑generation high‑performance, lead‑free X‑ray detectors.

Molecular ferroelectric materials are widely applied in piezoelectric converters, non-volatile memorizers, and photovoltaic devices due to their advantages of adjustable structure, lightweight, easy processing, and environmental friendliness. However, designing multifunctional molecular ferroelectrics with excellent properties has always been a great challenge. Herein, a multiaxial molecular ferroelectric is successfully designed by modifying the quasi-spherical cation dabco with CuBr2 to obtain halogenated [Bretdabco]CuBr4 (Bretdabco = N-bromoethyl-N′-diazabicyclo [2.2.2]octane), which crystallizes in polar point groups (C6). Typical ferroelectric behaviors featured by the P–E hysteresis loop and switched ferroelectric domain are exhibited. Notably, the molecular ferroelectric shows a high TC of 460 K, which is rare in the field and could greatly expand the application range of this material. In addition, the band gap is adjustable through the regulation of halogen. Both the UV absorption spectra and theoretical calculations indicate that the molecular ferroelectrics belong to a direct band gap (2.14 eV) semiconductor. This tunable and narrow band gap semiconductor molecular ferroelectric material with high TC can be utilized more effectively in the study of optoelectronics and sensors, including piezoelectric energy harvesters. This research may provide a promising approach for the development of multiaxial molecular ferroelectrics with a tiny band gap and high TC.
