Nanocrystal (NC) CuInSe2 thin-film transistors (TFTs), consisting of nontoxic and relatively abundant elements, have great potential in environment-friendly and low-cost electronic devices. However, the high-performance CuInSe2 NC TFTs reported so far utilize toxic compounds, such as CdSe and hydrazine, which often require tedious and complex procedures. TFTs using directly synthesized CuInSe2 NCs as channel layers exhibit promising device performances but are still not comparable to the counterparts of cadmium and lead chalcogenide-based NCs. In this work, an efficient solution-based colloidal synthesis and ligand-exchange process have been developed to effectively remove bulky surfactant ligands from CuInSe2 NCs and produce unique inorganically connected NCs through metal-sulfide bonding using simple metal-free chalcogenide compounds. Such inorganically connected CuInSe2 NC thin films, combined with surface treatment, substantially affect charge transport through trap states and tunneling transport mechanism. The carriers tunneling through the barrier between neighboring NCs with much shorter interparticle distances significantly enhance electronic coupling and improve the electrical transport properties. CuInSe2 NC TFT exhibits the electrical performance with a mobility of 9.6 cm2/(V s), on/off current ratio over 104, and negligible hysteresis at low operating voltages, comparable to those for state-of-the-art II–VI- and IV–VI-type NC TFTs. As a proof of concept, the CuInSe2 NC TFTs are used as building blocks of integrated inverters to demonstrate their promise for low process temperature-fabricated NC circuits.

The facile and ecofriendly method for the synthesis of a suitable colloidal nanocrystal ink plays an important role in the field of solar cells. Here, we describe our recent efforts toward this direction by a simple one-pot colloidal method to engineer CuInSe 2 (CISe) nanocrystals with cubic zincblende (ZB) structure. The suitable band gap value and obvious photoresponse of the as-synthesized CISe nanocrystals indicate their potential application in the field of thin film solar cells. In addition, a possible crystal growth mechanism has been suggested for the formation of ZB CISe.

A range of different copper-based sulfide shells, such as CuInS2, CuInZnS2, CuInS2-xSex, and CuInZnS2-xSex, have been grown on CuInSe2 (CISe) nanocrystals (NCs) in order to improve their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Starting from initial CISe core NCs with PLQY of 0.4%, the deposition of the CuInS2 shell has increased the PLQY to 4.5%, while introducing Zn or Se elements into the CuInS2 shell to form cation-alloyed CuInZnS2 or anion-alloyed CuInS2-xSex shells improved their PLQYs to 8% and 11%, respectively. Limitations on PLQY for the mentioned shell materials were related to the lattice mismatch with the CISe core material, and the band gap alignment in the core/shell NCs for quasi type-II nanostructures. This could be mitigated by growing a multinary CuInZnS2-xSex shell on the CISe core NCs, which resulted in further improvement of their PLQY to 20% for the emission centered at 920 nm. This study offers guidance for the rational selection of copper-based sulfide shell materials that are able to significantly improve the PLQY of heavy-metal free CISe NCs in the near-infrared spectral range of 834–1028 nm, which is relevant for biological labeling, optoelectronics, and sensing.

Near-infrared-to-visible photon upconversion holds great promise for a diverse range of applications. Current photosensitizers for triplet-fusion upconversion across this spectral window often contain either precious or toxic elements and have relatively low efficiencies. Although colloidal nanocrystals have emerged as versatile photosensitizers, the only family of nanocrystals discovered for near-infrared upconversion is the highly toxic lead chalcogenides. Here we report zinc-doped CuInSe 2 nanocrystals as a low-cost and lead-free alternate, enabling near-infrared-to-yellow upconversion with an external quantum efficiency reaching 16.7%. When directly merged with photoredox catalysis, this system enables efficient near-infrared-driven organic synthesis and polymerization, which in turn solves the issue of reabsorption loss for nanocrystal-sensitized upconversion. Moreover, the broadband light capture of these nanocrystals enables very rapid reactions under indoor sunlight. Extending the reach of ‘solar synthesis’ into the near-infrared may realize the century-long dream of conducting high-added-value chemical transformations using sunlight.
