This study has successfully prepared three kinds of surface enhanced raman scattering (SERS) substrates, namely AgNP/CuNPs/Bragg-PSi (porous silicon, PSi), AgNPs/CuNPs/PSi and AuNPs/CuNPs/Bragg-PSi by use of an anode electrochemical etching method and a dip plating method. Results show that: the AgNPs/CuNPs/Bragg-PSi substrate has optimal SERS performance and is capable of detecting the Raman spectrum (R2 = 0.9315) of a 10−5 M–10−11 M crystal violet (CV) solution. By virtue of optimizing the concentration of copper nitrate for soaking the AgNPs/CuNPs/Bragg-PSi substrate and the annealing temperature for the AgNPs/CuNPs/Bragg-PSi substrate, this study has explored the influence of different preparation conditions on the performances of the substrate. Results show that: the optimal soaking concentration of the copper nitrate solution is 0.75 M, and the AgNPs/CuNPs/Bragg-PSi substrate annealed at 180 °C shows a more uniform microscopic structure and a stronger surface-enhanced effect. Finally, the annealed AgNPs/CuNPs/Bragg-PSi substrate is capable of realizing the high-sensitivity detection (R2 = 0.9898) on diphenyl phthalate within a concentration range of 10−3 M to 10−9 M. The AgNPs/CuNPs/Bragg-PSi substrate has the advantages of easiness and convenience in preparation, low cost, high sensitivity and the like, thus providing a broad prospect for application of SERS technology in the fields of chemical analysis and biological analysis and laying a foundation for developing more sensitive and reliable detection methods.

An electrochemical aptamer sensor for the sensitive detection of aflatoxin B1(AFB1) in corn samples was developed using nanocomposites loaded with copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), which were modified on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The CuNPs@ZIF-8 nanocomposites served as modifying materials for electrodes, exhibiting a high specific surface area and excellent compatibility with aptamers, thereby enhancing the electron transfer rate and increasing the aptamer loading and immobilization efficiency. The electrochemical properties before and after modification were investigated and validated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques, while the sensor’s performance was analyzed through quantitative detection via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Furthermore, various conditions, including the volume of ZIF-8 dispersion, electrodeposition time of copper nanoparticles, aptamer concentration, and AFB1incubation time, were optimized. The results indicated that the sensor exhibited a wide linear range (10.0 to 1.0 × 106pg/mL), with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 1.13 pg/mL under optimized conditions, outperforming other reported aptamer sensors. The spiked recoveries in corn samples ranged from 96.663% to 105.72%. In conclusion, this sensor presents a novel solution for low-cost and high-sensitivity detection of AFB1.

In this study, a water-soluble fluorescent probe based on copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) was synthesized using a hydrothermal method with bovine serum albumin (BSA) (BSA@CuNPs) as a protectant, and it was utilized to efficiently detect the concentration of tetracycline (TC). Upon the addition of TC to the BSA@CuNPs probe, its fluorescence intensity is obviously diminished due to the keto-enol functions C=O group in TC connects with the hydroxyl group on the BSA@CuNPs probe to form a non-fluorescent complex, which can be successfully utilized for detecting TC concentration. Linear range and detection limit for TC detection are 0.1–130 µM and 90 nM. Furthermore, the BSA@CuNPs probe was applied to detect TC concentrations in real meat samples, with recoveries ranging from 95.40% to 102.13%, and the relative standard deviation ( RSD ) was below 2.73%. Therefore, BSA@CuNPs probe exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for TC, which will be used for the study of TC analysis in meat.

Poly(thymine)-hosted copper nanoparticles (poly T-CuNPs) have emerged as a promising label-free fluorophore for bioanalysis, but its application in RNA-related studies is still rarely explored. Herein, by utilizing duplex-specific nuclease (DSN) as a convertor to integrate target recycling mechanism into terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated superlong poly T-CuNPs platform, a specific and sensitive method for microRNA detection has been developed. In this strategy, a 3′-phosphorylated DNA probe can hybridize with target RNA and then be cut by DSN to produce 3′-hydroxylated fragments, which can be further tailed by TdT with superlong poly T for fluorescent CuNPs synthesis. As proof of concept, an analysis of let-7d was achieved with a good linear correlation between 20 and 1000 pM (R 2 = 0.9965) and a detection limit of 20 pM. Moreover, both homologous and heterologous microRNAs were also effectively discriminated. This strategy might pave a brand-new way for designing label-free and sensitive microRNA assays.

A fluorescent probe composed of 2-mercaptopyridine–copper nanoparticles (2MP-CuNPs) was synthesized through a hydrothermal method utilizing CuCl 2 and 2-mercaptopyridine (2MP). The experimental results indicate that the 2MP-CuNPs probe exhibited an excellent fluorescence emission peak at 525 nm with an excitation wavelength of 200 nm. Furthermore, this emission peak was accompanied by a substantial Stokes shift of 325 nm, which effectively minimized the overlap between the excitation and emission spectra, thereby enhancing detection sensitivity. In tetracycline (TC) detection, the dimethylamino group on TC undergoes protonation in acidic conditions, resulting in a H + ion. Consequently, the nitrogen atom within the pyridine moiety of the 2MP-CuNPs probe forms a coordination complex with H + via multi-toothed n-bonding interactions, leading to a significant reduction in fluorescence intensity at 525 nm. Based on this mechanism, a quantitative detection method for TC was successfully established with a linear range spanning from 0.1 to 240 µM and an impressive detection limit of 120 nM. Furthermore, during actual sample analyses involving milk and chicken feed, this analysis method based on the 2MP-CuNPs probe achieved absolute recovery rates ranging from 94% to 98%, underscoring its considerable potential for practical applications.

Previous studies investigating the risk of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) to biological wastewater treatment have primarily tested NPs individually; however, limited data are available on the impact of NPs on the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process. In this study, the toxicity of CuNPs on anammox granules was investigated individually and in combination with CuONPs or ZnONPs. Exposure to CuNPs at 5 mg g −1 suspended solids (SS) decreased the anammox activity to 47.1 ± 8.5%, increased the lactate dehydrogenase level to 110.5 ± 3.4% and increased the extracellular N 2 H 4 concentration by 16-fold but did not cause oxidative stress. The presence of CuONPs or ZnONPs at 5 mg g −1 SS did not significantly aggravate or alleviate the toxicity of the CuNPs; however, the introduction of EDTA or S 2− could attenuate the adverse effects of the CuNPs, CuONPs and ZnONPs on the anammox granules. EDTA captured Cu ions, whereas S 2− shielded and deactivated Cu ions and passivated CuNPs. Therefore, our results indicated that the toxicity of NPs was dependent on the amount of active metal reaching the anammox cells. Overall, the results of this study have filled knowledge gaps and provided insights into the combined toxicity of NPs on anammox biomass.

The poly(thymine) (poly T) can effectively template the in situ formation of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) within several minutes under ambient conditions, offering great potential as fluorescence probe for biochemical analysis without complicated modifications. However, the exploration of poly T-templated CuNPs (poly T-CuNPs) for biochemical applications is still at its very early stage. Herein, a novel fluorescent assay has been developed for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and its inhibitor detection based on poly T-CuNPs. In the absence of AChE, the high affinity between Cu 2+ and thymine leads to the formation of fluorescent CuNPs. In the presence of AChE, the fluorescence of poly T-CuNPs is quenched based on the reaction between Cu 2+ and thiocholine generating from the hydrolysis of ATCh by AChE. This detection assay is simple without the requirement for complex labeling of probe DNA and the multiple preparation procedure of fluorescent compounds. The detection assay is highly sensitive for sensing AChE in the concentration ranging from 0.11 to 2.78 mU mL −1 with a detection limit of 0.05 mU mL −1 and is feasible for screening AChE inhibitor. This method paves a new way for exploring the biosensing applications of the poly T-CuNPs.

A fluorometric method for the determination of histamine has been developed based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect of D-penicillamine capped copper nanoparticles (DPA-CuNPs). The fluorescent DPA-CuNPs were synthesized by a one-pot method using D-penicillamine as both reducing agent and stabilizing ligand. The size, morphology and physical chemical properties of DPA-CuNPs were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fluorescence spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and absorption spectroscopy. The DPA-CuNPs exhibit AIE effect and show intense red fluorescence (650 nm). In the presence of histamine, DPA-CuNPs are dispersed into small homogeneous particles, causing fluorescence quenching. Based on this reaction, a histamine sensor is constructed. The fluorescence of the CuNPs solution has a good linear relationship with histamine concentration in the range 0.05 μM to 5 μM and the determination limit (3σ/slope) is 30 nM. The estimated method was successfully applied to the determination of histamine in fish, pork and red wine.
Schematic representation of copper nanoparticles for histamine analysis. In the presence of histamine, the strong red fluorescence of copper nanoparticles is obvious decreased through interaction of copper nanoparticles and histamine.

Folic acid (FA) is essential for human health, particularly for pregnant women and infants. In this work, a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified by a bimetallic layer of Cu/Co nanoparticles (CuNPs/CoNPs) as a synergistic amplification element by simple step-by-step electrodeposition, and was used for sensitive detection of FA. The proposed CuNPs/CoNPs/GCE sensor was characterized by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Then, under optimal conditions, a linear relationship was obtained in the wide range of 110.00–1750.00 μM for the detection of FA with a limit of detection (LOD) of 34.79 μM ( S/N = 3). The sensitivity was calculated as 0.096 μA μM −1 cm −2 . Some interfering compounds including glucose (Glc), biotin, dopamine (DA), and glutamic acid (Glu) showed little effect on the detection of FA by amperometry ( i-t ). Finally, the average recovery obtained was in a range of 91.77–110.06%, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 8.00% in FA tablets, indicating that the proposed sensor can accurately and effectively detect the FA content in FA tablets.

Donut-like Cu-Zn-MOF@CuNPs were synthesized via facile two-step approaches. • Cl − amplifies Cu signal via formation of highly electroactive CuCl. • Ag + inhibits the signal by competitive binding with Cl − to form AgCl. • The sensor detects Ag + with a low LOD of 1.4 nM and wide linear range. • It shows good selectivity, stability, and real water sample recovery. Silver ions (Ag + ) are highly toxic heavy metal pollutants. Conventional electrochemical methods for Ag + detection typically involve complex ionophore preparation, long preconcentration/stripping steps, or costly biorecognition agent. Here, we report a Cu-Zn-MOF supported CuNPs composite (Cu-Zn-MOF/CuNPs) for Ag + detection. The composite is prepared via a two-step room temperature mixing process. The nest-like Cu-Zn-MOF, composed of stacked two-dimensional nanosheets, provides a high specific surface area and accessible active sites for CuNPs deposition, which improves conductivity and generates a detectable redox signal. The presence of Cl − enhances the Cu redox signal due to the formation of electroactive CuCl. In the presence of Ag + , this signal enhancement is suppressed due to the competitive binding that forms AgCl precipitates. Leveraging this “amplification-inhibition” response, the Cu-Zn-MOF/CuNPs modified electrode allows for Ag + detection with two linear ranges (5 nM–100 nM and 100 nM–1100 nM), a detection limit of 1.4 nM, and recoveries ranging from 96.5% to 104.5% in spiked real water samples. The preparation procedure and detection protocol are relatively straightforward, and the sensing mechanism offers an alternative pathway for heavy metal ion detection. A donut-like Cu-Zn-MOF/CuNPs composite enables sensitive and selective electrochemical detection of Ag + via a novel amplification-inhibition mechanism: Cl − enhances the Cu redox signal through CuCl formation, while Ag + competitively binds Cl − to suppress the signal. The sensor achieves a low detection limit of 1.4 nM and good performance in real water samples. Download: Download high-res image (121KB) Download: Download full-size image

In this study, a micro/nano hybrid filler comprised of Al 2 O 3 @CuNPs is synthesized through a chemical reduction method. The incorporation of Cu nanoparticles serves as a bridge, addressing the contact issues within the filler and substantially enhancing its ability to establish a thermal conductivity network. The filler loading was kept at a constant level up to 70 wt%; however, the copper amount was varied between 0 and 10 wt%. The resulting thermal conductivity of the Al 2 O 3 @CuNPs/EP composite exhibits a gradual increase with the filler content, reaching 1.06 W/mK at a total filler content of 70 wt%. This represents a remarkable growth rate of 457.9% compared to pure EP. This material holds promising potential for applications in thermal conductivity materials. In this work, aptamer (Apt) immobilized on sensing interface utilizing one step co-electrodeposition technology was first proposed and applied in an electrochemical aptasensor to detect organophosphorus pesticide. This method was simple and facile, solving the complicated problem of aptasensor preparation process. Specifically, in the preparation of the electrodeposition solution, graphene oxide (GO) was used to connect aptamer modified with NH 2 , offering the basis for aptamer fixation. And, the introduction of Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) into the Apt-GO mixed solution enhanced the conductivity of the electrodeposition film, leading to superior electrochemical performance. In addition, during electrodeposition of the prepared solution on screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) surface by CV technology, GO was electrochemically reduced to reduced graphene oxide (rGO), providing better electrical conductivity. The Apt/rGO-CuNPs composite coating was characterized using SEM and CV technique. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the low detection limit of 0.003 nM for profenofos, 0.3 nM for phorate, 0.03 nM for isocarbophos and 0.3 nM for omethoate were obtained. The aptasensor was also successfully applied for the analysis of phorate in vegetables. Because the developed aptasensor with simple preparation process had extremely good stability, high selectivity and great sensitivity, it would show great potential for other fields.
