Boosting BaTi4O9 photocatalytic H2 evolution activity by functionalized CuNi alloy

Meng-Jie Cui,Shan-Shan Li,Tie-Zhen Ren,Abulikemu Abulizi,Ai-Sha Nulahong

H 2 evolution through photocatalysis possesses has the advantage for achieving the carbon neutral, that relies on the highly efficient catalysts. Non-noble metals have lower prices than noble metals, which is beneficial for their large-scale applications in industry. In this paper, functionalized CuNi alloy and BaTi 4 O 9 (BTO) composite (Cu x Ni y /BTO(Z)) photocatalyst were synthesized successfully through hydrothermal calcination method. The acetates were selected the raw material to avoid the use of hazardous chemicals and pollution of photocatalysts by other elements, while also providing C=O for the photocatalyst to further enhance its photocatalytic activity. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution rate of Cu 3 Ni/BTO is 184.14 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is 101.18 times that of pure BTO (1.82 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) under the same conditions. Combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental studies, it is concluded that electronic structural characteristics of BaTi 4 O 9 and the addition of CuNi alloy could provide more electrons and improve the photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity.

Role of electrons and H* in electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonium for CuNi alloy

Zhiwei Zou,Hongxiang Zhang,Xuefeng Pan,Hui Shen,Jianying Yu,Tengfei Guo,Yonghao Wang

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO 3 - ) to ammonium (NH 4 + ) is an environment friendly approach for treating nitrogen-containing wastewater. Consequently, electrocatalysts capable of effectively and selectively reducing NO 3 - to NH 4 + receives growing attention. However, Cu-based catalysts demonstrate limited efficiency and the drawback of generating toxic NO 2 - though it is prevalent in the field of electrocatalytic reduction of NO 3 - (NO 3 RR). In this work, a CuNi alloy was synthesized on a Co foil through electrodeposition (marked as CuNi@Co) and its electrocatalytic performance for NO 3 RR was evaluated. XRD, EDS mapping and XPS characterization indicate CuNi exists with alloy state. Electrocatalytic experiments demonstrate that CuNi@Co exhibits an exceptional FE NH3 of 99.12% at -0.64 V (vs. RHE). Importantly, no detrimental NO 2 - generated during NO 3 RR process because the reduction rate from NO 2 - to NH 4 + is faster than that from NO 3 - to NO 2 - . Mechanistic analysis suggests that Cu serves as a ‘reservoir’ to provide electrons to facilitate the reduction of NO 3 - to NO 2 - during NO 3 RR process and the synergistic effect of Ni and Cu promotes more active hydrogen (H*) to participate the reduction process of NO 2 - to NH 4 + not H 2 generation, ultimately improving FE NH3 . This work elucidates the role of electrons and H* in electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonium for CuNi alloy, providing new insights into the reduction process of NO 3 RR for Cu-based materials.

CuNi alloy for hydrazine oxidation assisted energy-saving urea production via proton exchange membranes

Xiang Ji,Yaodong Yu,Aixin Ma,Yujia Guan,Hongdong Li,Jianping Lai,Lei Wang

Nitrate (NO 3 - ) and hydrazine (N 2 H 4 ) are common nitrogen pollutants in groundwater. The electrochemical method can be used to synthesize the added product urea while treating N-pollution. Therefore, the development of sufficiently efficient electrosynthesis urea systems and efficient electrocatalysts is of great significance, but also challenging. In this paper, CuNi alloy nanosheets (Cu x Ni y /CF) on copper foam surface were synthesized by electrodeposition, and C-N coupled hydrazine oxidation (HzOR) system was constructed by proton exchange membrane (PEM). Cu and Ni in CuNi alloy act as double active sites and react with C-N coupling reaction and HzOR respectively. At −0.5 V potential, the Faraday efficiency of Cu 8 Ni 2 /CF for C-N coupling reaction is 51.66 %, and the urea yield is 254.09 μg h −1 cm −2 . At the same time, HzOR with low thermodynamic oxidation potential can quickly produce excess H + to supply protons to the cathode for C-N coupling reaction, thus significantly promoting the forward C-N coupling reaction. Cu 1 Ni 9 /CF also showed significant activity in the oxidation reaction of N 2 H 4 in KOH electrolyte. Therefore, we assembled a Cu 1 Ni 9 (+) || Cu 8 Ni 2 (-) electrolytic cell, which only needs 0.23 V working voltage up to 150 mA cm −2 , and can convert NO 3 - and CO 2 to urea at a power consumption of 5.09 kWh kg −1 while converting N 2 H 4 . Energy saving 37.6 % compared to conventional C-N coupled OER electrolytic system (about 8.16 kWh kg −1 urea). It can greatly reduce the cost of urea production, make the price of fertilizer and chemical raw materials more competitive, and promote the development of agriculture and chemical industry while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen pollutants in the ecological environment. This study reports a promising and effective strategy for the synthesis of urea and treatment of N contaminants at a small operating voltage.

Magnetic CuNi Alloy Nanoparticles for Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Nitroarene

Hongbin Shi,Xiaofeng Dai,Qing Liu,Teng Zhang,Yabing Zhang,Yuling Shi,Tao Wang

Magnetic CuNi alloy nanoparticles (CuNi NPs) for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of nitroarene were successfully prepared by the facile thermal decomposition of copper formate (Cuf) and nickel formate (Nif) simultaneously. Liquid paraffin served as solvent, and oleylamine (OAM) acted as both complexing agent and stabilizer. The particle size and Cu/Ni composition of CuNi NPs could be controlled by adjusting the amount of OAM and the Cu/Ni ratio of the precursor. The average diameter of the prepared CuNi NPs ranged from 10.2 to 56.9 nm. It had been confirmed that CuNi NPs were an alloy of Cu and Ni and effectively resistant to oxidation. The prepared CuNi NPs could be separated under an external magnetic field without any energy consumption since they were superparamagnetic. Among the prepared CuNi NPs with different compositions, the Cu3Ni7 NPs were the best catalyst for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitrobenzene with ethylene glycol (EG) as the hydrogen donor, giving a nitrobenzene conversion of 99% and an aniline yield of >97%. The conversion and yield remained above 95% and 80% respectively after 10 cycles of NOBF4-treated Cu3Ni7 NPs, demonstrating good reusability for the CTH reaction. This work reported a novel method for preparing magnetic CuNi NPs and also provided a new approach for the hydrogenation of nitroarene catalyzed by non-noble metals in a green environment.

Transfer hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone over acid site-modified CuNi alloy

Yu Nanxi,Lu Houfang,Yang Wei,Zheng Yuxin,Hu Qiang,Liu Yingying,Wu Kejing,Liang Bin

In the process of converting biomass into high value-added chemicals, transfer hydrogenation as a mild hydrogenation method has attracted more and more attention. The catalysts with hydrogenation sites (nano CuNi alloy) and acid sites (Al oxide) highly dispersed on the surface of a stable support (active carbon) were prepared and the importance of acid sites for the activity of CuNi catalysts in transfer hydrogenation was demonstrated. The catalysts showed promising catalytic activity on the transfer hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL). The CuNi-1Al/AC with 5 wt.% CuNi alloy and 5 wt.% Al got 97.2% GVL yield and 100% LA conversion at 220 ℃ in isopropanol for 2 h. The high activity of the catalyst is attributed to the promoted esterification by the supported acid sites. The Al-modified catalyst also showed activity for esterification reaction in different alcohol hydrogen donors. The catalyst occurs inactive during the cycle due to the shedding of the active components, and the stability of catalyst is effectively improved by a stepwise impregnation. Graphical abstract

Constructing CuNi dual active sites on ZnIn2S4 for highly photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Jingyi Jin,Yanren Cao,Ting Feng,Yanxin Li,Ruonan Wang,Kaili Zhao,Wei Wang,Bohua Dong,Lixin Cao

Noble metal Pt as an efficient cocatalyst is widely utilized in the photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution field while its application is restricted by high price and scarcity. Herein, a feasible strategy for depositing a non-noble bimetallic cocatalyst on a ZnIn2S4 surface has been put forward. The low-cost and earth-abundant CuNi bimetal cocatalyst was deposited via a simple one-step photoreduction method. In this novel photocatalytic system, CuNi bimetal served as dual active sites which can inhibit the recombination of charge carriers on ZnIn2S4. Compared with single Cu or Ni deposited ZnIn2S4 samples, CuNi bimetal decorated samples showed a significant enhancement in hydrogen evolution activity. Meanwhile, 12% Cu2Ni1–ZIS realized the highest hydrogen generation rate (7825 μmol h−1 g−1, AQE = 30.19%, λ > 420 nm). The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the spillover effect of H atoms from Ni to Cu and the synergistic effect between the metals. This work provides a novel strategy for optimizing the H2 evolution performance of a ZnIn2S4-based photocatalyst by utilizing a non-noble bimetallic cocatalyst as dual active sites.

Synergetic effect of bimetallic CuNi-ZrO2 catalysts for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural

Yinghui Sun,Jie Bai,Chenghu Zhang,Zezhou Xing,Ying Li,Tong Xu

Bimetallic synergy can competently optimize the electronic structure of the active metals and coordinate the interaction between metal components, which is a good strategy to effectively enhance the catalytic performance and stability of monometallic catalysts. Herein, we report a CuNi bimetallic catalyst supported on the mesoporous zirconia prepared via electrospinning technology, which can achieve high catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) performance with excellent cycle stability. The effect of bimetallic synergistic effect on CTH capacity was systematically investigated by precisely regulating Cu/Ni molar ratio. The optimized Cu2Ni1-ZrO2 catalyst exhibited exceptional performance, achieving 88.9% furfural conversion with 93.6% furfuryl alcohol selectivity in isopropanol under 170℃ for 12 h, accompanied by a notable TOF value of 4.90 h-1. The electron transfer between Cu and Ni promotes the generation of more Cu0/Cu+ active sites, which effectively enhances the CTH activity of the catalyst. Additionally, the Cu2Ni1-ZrO2 catalyst showed stable performance over 6 cycles with negligible activity decay. Finally, the hydrogen transfer path of furfural on the catalyst surface was studied via H isotope labeling mass experiments.

Selective tandem hydrogenation and rearrangement of furfural to cyclopentanone over CuNi bimetallic catalyst in water

Shujing Zhang,Hong Ma,Yuxia Sun,Xin Liu,Meiyun Zhang,Yang Luo,Jin Gao,Jie Xu

Tandem catalysis for the hydrogenation rearrangement of furfural (FA) provides an attractive solution for manufacturing cyclopentanone (CPO) from renewable biomass resources. The CuNi/Al-MCM-41 catalyst was synthesized and afforded excellent catalytic performance with 99.0% conversion and 97.7% selectivity to CPO in a near-neutral solution under 2.0 MPa H 2 at 160 °C for 5 h, much higher than those on other molecular sieve supports including MCM-41, SBA-15, HY, and ZSM-5. A small amount of Al highly dispersed in MCM-41 plays an anchoring role and ensures the formation of highly dispersed CuNi bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs). The remarkably improved catalytic performance may be attributed to the bimetallic synergistic and charge transfer effects. In addition, the initial FA concentration and the aqueous system pH required precise control to minimize polymerization and achieve high selectivity of CPO. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectra results indicated that polymerization was sensitive to pH values. Under acidic conditions, FA and intermediate furfuryl alcohol polymerize, while the intermediate 4-hydroxy-2-cyclopentenone mainly polymerizes under alkaline conditions, blocking the cascade of multiple reactions. Therefore, near-neutral conditions are most suitable for minimizing the impact of polymerization. This study provides a useful solution for the current universal problems of polymerization side reactions and low carbon balance for biomass conversion .

Highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution driven by adjustable bimetal CuNi derived hexagonal Ni(OH)2

Lingjiao Li,Jing Xu,Binyi Su

In the field of photocatalysis, most of the photocatalysts are semiconductors. Recent years, there have been many photocatalytic systems related to non-semiconductor catalysts. In this paper, a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution system of hexagonal Ni(OH) 2 derived from CuNi bimetal is obtained by classical hydrothermal method. The derived hexagonal Ni(OH) 2 can promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and greatly improve the effect of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The electron-hole pair comes from the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Cu from CuNi composite. It is worth noting that photoluminescence spectra and photoelectrochemical experiments have confirmed that the CuNi-5 complex can effectively improve space charge separation. The results of linear scanning voltammetry show that the material has high current response characteristics. This system gives a practical solution for planning and synthesizing non-semiconductor catalysts with high photocatalytic activity.

A CuNi-Loaded Porous Magnetic Soft Material: Preparation, Characterization and Magnetic Field-Controlled Modulus

Jingyuan Bai,Xuejiao Wang,Meilin Zhang,Jin Zhang,Xiaolin Chen,Yanan An,Renguo Guan

Novel porous magnetic soft materials (pMSMs) based on a poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) porous matrix filled with CuNi nanoparticles (NPs) of around 70 nm were synthesized. Initially, magnetic CuNi NPs were fabricated by the reduction of Ni and Cu ions with hydrazine hydrate in ethylene glycol medium in the absence of other capping agents. The pMSMs are subsequently fabricated by mixing CuNi NPs and PVA through freezing-drying process. The as-obtained pMSMs can respond to a magnetic field, i.e., the compressive modulus increase under a magnetic field of 0.23 T. The experimental results indicate that CuNi NPs can easily move to form chain-like structures under the application of a magnetic field. A combination of direct observation and finite element modeling has shown that under the influence of a magnetic field, chain-like aggregates of CuNi NPs lead to self-reinforcement of the pMSMs and, thus, to the increased compressive modulus. From a technological point of view, these materials with good magnetic responsiveness and moderate mechanical strength have potential applications in artificial muscle, soft actuators and drug release, to name a few.

Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by CuNi@C Derived from Metal–Organic Frameworks Precursor

Xue Huang,Jing Zhang,Xiao Zhang,Qing-Ping Wu,Chun-Hui Yan,Xue Huang,Jing Zhang,Xiao Zhang,Qing-Ping Wu,Chun-Hui Yan

Calcined Cu-based metal–organic frameworks impregnated with nickel nitrate catalysts (CuNi@C) were synthesised. X-Ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques were applied for the characterisation of the synthesised catalyst, which revealed an octahedral particle shape, rough surface, and metallic copper (Cu, CuO) and nickel (Ni, NiO) particles. CuNi@C was fabricated as a novel peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for the oxidative degradation of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in aqueous media. Results showed that the CuNi@C/PMS system can efficiently degrade nearly 100 % of 0.02 mmol L−1 AO7 within 60 min. In addition, the trapping experiments confirmed the participation of sulfate radicals (SO4•−) and hydroxyl radicals (HO•) as reactive species in the system. Furthermore, the effects of parameters including catalyst and PMS dosages, initial concentration of AO7, and pH were studied. Results showed that the decolourisation efficiency increased with the increase of catalyst dosage, but decreased with the increase of AO7 concentration. The optimal PMS concentration was 0.675 mmol L−1, and initial pH showed no significant effect on the degradation of AO7. Moreover, the CuNi@C could be reused four times with good activity and reusability. Findings revealed that the CuNi@C/PMS system shows potential for degrading contaminants in the environment, due to its catalytic activity and non-negligible adsorption.

A CuNi bimetallic cathode with nanostructured copper array for enhanced hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE)

Bo Liu,Hao Zhang,Qi Lu,Guanghe Li,Fang Zhang

To address the challenges of low hydrodechlorination efficiency by non-noble metals, a Cu Ni bimetallic cathode with nanostructured copper array film was fabricated for effective electrochemical dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) in aqueous solution. The Cu Ni bimetallic cathodes were prepared by a simple one-step electrodeposition of copper onto the Ni foam substrate, with various electrodeposition time of 5/10/15/20 min. The optimum electrodeposition time was 10 min when copper was coated as a uniform nanosheet array on the nickel foam substrate surface. This cathode exhibited the highest TCE removal, which was twice higher compared to that of the nickel foam cathode. At the same passed charge of 1080C, TCE removal increased from 33.9 ± 3.3% to 99.7 ± 0.1% with the increasing operation current from 5 to 20 mA cm −2 , while the normalized energy consumption decreased from 15.1 ± 1.0 to 2.6 ± 0.01 kWh log −1  m −3 . The decreased normalized energy consumption at a higher current density was due to the much higher removal efficiency at a higher current. These results suggest that Cu Ni cathodes prepared by simple electrodeposition method represent a promising and cost-effective approach for enhanced electrochemical dechlorination.
