Background: In previous work, we successfully prepared CuO/Al2O3 catalysts and evaluated their catalytic activity, kinetics and degradation mechanism for Fenton-like oxidation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) under microwave irradiation. However,
we did not study the effect of important preparation parameters on the activities of catalysts. Objectives: (1) The effect of preparation conditions: CuSO4 concentration of the impregnating solution, Al2O3 to CuSO4
solution ratio, type and concentration of precipitant and calcination temperature on the physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity were studied. (2) The catalytic performance of the Fenton-like oxidation reaction of PNP under microwave irradiation was evaluated and correlated with
the characterization results. (3) The stability and catalytic mechanism of the catalysts were investigated. Methods: The CuO/Al2O3 catalyst was prepared by the impregnation deposition method. The 20 g pretreated Al2O3
particles were immersed in 0.6 mol/L Cu (NO3)2 solution and 0.4 mol/L NaOH solution for 24 h before and after. After cleaning and drying, the samples were calcined in an air muffle furnace for 4 h at a certain temperature to obtain CuO/Al2O3
catalyst. Then the catalyst was characterized and catalyzed. Results: XRD, BET and FESEM results have demonstrated that the catalyst claimed at 300 and 350°C showed a smaller size, a higher specific surface area and a better distribution of the CuO species than their counterparts prepared
at higher calcination temperatures. The CuO/Al2O3 catalyst claimed at 300 and 350°C also showed higher removal efficiencies for PNP than other catalysts prepared at higher calcination temperatures. Conclusion: It was found that the catalysts
prepared at 350°C as calcination temperature showed higher surface area, smaller CuO particle size, and uniform CuO particle size distribution, and consequently showed better catalytic activities with better stability and reusability. Moreover, the XPS results of the catalysts showed a
decrease in the Isat/Ip ratio after microwave enhanced Fenton- like reaction, confirming that CuO species has been reduced to Cu2O to some extent.

CuO/Al2O3 was synthesized successfully by the impregnation-deposition method and used as a heterogeneous catalyst in a microwave assisted Fenton-like process (MW/FL). The morphology and physico-chemical properties of the CuO/Al2O3 catalyst were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) was investigated by different processes, including microwave irradiation (MW) alone, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidation under microwave irradiation without the catalyst (MW/H2O2), a Fenton-like (FL) process, a MW/FL process and a thermally-assisted Fenton-like (TH/FL) process. The results showed that the CuO/Al2O3 catalyzed MW/FL could generate more hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and remove PNP more effectively compared to other processes. The effects of initial pH, dosage of H2O2 and catalyst, microwave power and radiation time, and PNP concentration on the removal efficiency were also studied. The results showed that 93% removal efficiency of PNP was obtained within 6 min under optimized conditions. Moreover, the catalyst had a good stability and reusability, thus expanding the scope of non-iron based catalysts in the Fenton-like reactions.

CeO2–CuO/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by three different methods and their activities for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 were investigated. As can be seen from the experimental results, the catalyst prepared by the single-step sol–gel (SG) method showed the best SCR activity and resistance to SO2 and H2O. In order to investigate the relationship between the preparation method and the performance of SCR catalysts, the catalysts were characterized by using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray diffraction, temperature programmed reduction with hydrogen, temperature programmed desorption with ammonia, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared and thermo-gravimetric analysis techniques. It was found that the excellent performance of CeO2–CuO/Al2O3 catalyst prepared by the single-step SG method should be resulted from its large surface area, low crystallinity, high oxygen storage capacity, high NH3 adsorption capacity, high concentration of surface chemisorbed oxygen, weak sulphation process and weak water absorption.

In this work, CuO-Al 2 O 3 composites were synthesized at higher temperatures to control the leaching of metal ions , which can activate sulfite (S(IV)) to degrade organic contaminants by generating reactive oxygen species (ROSs). The synthesized catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy , Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, Raman spectroscopy , and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry . Sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) was almost completely removed (>99%) at pH 6.8, and the leaching amount of Cu accounted for 0.027% of the total amount of Cu after the reaction. Notably, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was found for the first time in the activated sulfite system, which removed organic pollutants together with sulfate (SO 4 •- ) and hydroxyl (∙OH) radicals. And Al 2 O 3 plays an important role in the catalyst, including anti-sintering, reducing the leaching of copper ions , and promoting the generation of oxygen vacancies. Based on the types of ROSs and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results, a possible ROSs generation mechanism was proposed. In addition, the stability of the catalyst and the effect of different factors on the degradation of SCP, including operating parameters and water quality, were further investigated. The intermediates were detected by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and a developmental toxicity assessment of the intermediates was defined based on the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST). Overall, this paper not only provides a new strategy for sulfite activation but also promotes more attention to non-radical processes in activated sulfite systems.

A series of supported CuO-based nanoparticle catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method and used for the synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol and CO2in the presence of 2-cyanopyridine as a dehydrant and DMF as a solvent. The effects of supports (activated alumina, silicon dioxide, graphene oxide, graphene, and activated carbon), CuO loading amount, calcination temperature, and reaction parameters on the catalytic activity of the catalyst were investigated in detail. XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET, and CO2-TPD were used for the characterization of the prepared catalysts. It is found that CuO/Al2O3shows a higher catalytic activity, which depends on the CuO loading amount and calcination temperature. The surface area and number of basic sites of the catalyst exhibit a crucial effect on the catalytic activity of CuO/Al2O3. Furthermore, there is a synergistic effect between the catalyst and 2-cyanopyridine where the former has a higher activation ability for glycerol and the latter acts not only as a dehydrant, but also as a promoter for CO2activation. Recycling experiments reveal that this catalyst can be reused for at least five cycles without any inactivation. Based on the experiment results and FTIR characterization, a possible reaction mechanism for the carbonylation of glycerol and CO2is proposed. Keywords:glycerol;glycerol carbonate;carbon dioxide;2-cyanopyridine;CuO/Al2O3

Abstract Selective detection of trace (weakly reducing) dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in highly humid exhaled breath using metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, with the presence of strong reducing H2S interference gas, is essential for the early diagnosis of hepatic diseases. However, it remains a big challenge in principle. Herein, a bilayer MOS sensor with a Pd–WO3 sensing film and a CuO/Al2O3 filtering overlayer was proposed. The temperature-dependent H2S catalytic oxidation experiment suggests that CuO could effectively filter H2S even under room temperature. Dispersing the CuO particles into insulative Al2O3 carrier could not only selectively remove H2S without significant consumption of DMS but also isolate the underlying Pd–WO3 sensing layer’s response signal from interference caused by that of CuO. By adding the CuO/Al2O3 1:9 filtering overlayer, the response ratio of DMS to H2S was significantly enhanced from 3.3 to 50.4, furthermore, an ultrahigh response (701.3) to 10 ppm DMS, and a low limit of detection of 10 ppb under 90% RH were achieved, which promises the future breath disease diagnosis.
