Synthesis of CuO/g-C3N4 composites, and their application to voltammetric sensing of glucose and dopamine

Huang Yanli,Tan Yi,Feng Chuanqi,Wang Shiquan,Wu Huimin,Zhang Guangxue

The preparation of 3 kinds of carbonaceous nanocomposites by hydrothermal treatment and subsequent calcination described. The first comprises a nanomaterial of type CuO/g-C 3 N 4 , with g-C 3 N 4 in mass fractions of 2, 5 and 7 wt%, respectively. The second comprises CuO/porous carbon (5 wt%), and the third comprises CuO/carbon spheres (5 wt%). All of them were employed to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to obtain electrochemical sensors for glucose and dopamine. The GCE modified with CuO/g-C 3 N 4 (5 wt%) displays the highest electrocatalytic activity towards glucose and dopamine. Figures of merit for sensing glucose (in 0.1 M NaOH solution) include a wide linear range (0.5 μM to 8.5 mM), a detection limit of 0.150 μM, and a sensitivity of 0.274 μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 (at a working potential of 0.60 V vs. Ag/AgCl). The respective data for dopamine (in pH 7.0 solution) are linear ranges from 0.2-16.0 μM and 16.0-78.7 μM, a lower detection limit of 60 nM, and an electrochemical sensitivity of 0.834 and 0.331 μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 (at a working potential of 0.22 V vs. Ag/AgCl). The good performance of the modified GCE is attributed to the synergetic interactions between CuO and the appropriate fraction of g-C 3 N 4 , and the improvement of conductivity. Schematic presentation of a electrochemical sensor based on CuO/g-C 3 N 4 for the determination of glucose and dopamine.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants over a CuO/g-C3N4 p–n heterojunction under visible light irradiation

Lejie Zhu,Jianmin Luo,Guohui Dong,Yun Lu,Yinlong Lai,Jun Liu,Guanmei Chen,Yi Zhang

As a kind of metal-free organic semiconductor photocatalyst, g-C3N4 has been widely explored for use in photocatalysis. However, the low quantum yield, small absorption range, and poor conductivity limit its large-scale application. Introducing another kind of semiconductor, particularly an oxide semiconductor, can result in some unexpected properties, such as an improved change transfer, enhanced light absorption, and better conductivity. In this work, CuO/g-C3N4 is successfully prepared through an impregnation and post-calcination method. A series of measurements support the formation of an organic-inorganic hybrid p–n heterojunction at the CuO (p-type) and g-C3N4 (n-type) interface. Furthermore, the photoactivity of the composite is evaluated via photocatalytic NO removal and the visible degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Results show that the photocatalytic properties of CuO/g-C3N4 are almost twice as high as those of g-C3N4. In comparative tests, the photocatalytic degradation performance of Mix-CuO/g-C3N4 (the mixture of CuO and g-C3N4 nanosheets prepared by mechanically mixing) is even lower than that of pure g-C3N4. The degradation of RhB is only 19.7% under visible light after 30 min of irradiation. The improvement in the photoactivity of CuO/g-C3N4 results from the built-in electric field close to the formed p–n heterojunction, which switches the electron transfer mechanism from a double-charge transfer mechanism to a Z-scheme mechanism. In addition, the formed p–n heterojunction favors charge transfer, and thus the photocatalytic performance is significantly improved.

CuO/g-C3N4 nanocomposite for elemental mercury capture at low temperature

Liu Dongjing,Lu Cheng,Wu Jiang

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) with unique and versatile properties has gained increasing research concerns. Here, CuO/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite is fabricated and employed for gas-phase mercury (Hg 0 ) removal at low temperature. Pure g-C 3 N 4 performs well toward Hg 0 adsorption at 40–200 °C with the optimal Hg 0 removal efficiency of ~ 54.5% at 120 °C. CuO-modification can significantly promote the Hg 0 capture ability of g-C 3 N 4 , probably due to the intimate interface contact of CuO and g-C 3 N 4 . The Hg 0 removal efficiency of g-C 3 N 4 first increases and then decreases with rising temperature, while temperature shows a promotional effect on Hg 0 removal efficiency of CuO/g-C 3 N 4 . Hg 0 is oxidized into HgO by the chemisorbed oxygen originated from the O–C–N structure of g-C 3 N 4 and the lattice oxygen of CuO. g-C 3 N 4 can be efficiently activated by modifying with CuO toward enhanced Hg 0 oxidation ability, presumably attributed to the electron transfer at the interface of CuO and g-C 3 N 4 .

Ternary SiO2@CuO/g-C3N4 Nanoparticles for Solar-Driven Photoelectrocatalytic CO2-to-Fuel Conversion

Zhen Li,Kwang Leong Choy

Electrocatalytic CO2reduction driven by renewable electricity offers a sustainable approach to producing valuable chemicals, though it is often hindered by low activity and selectivity. CuO, an important transition metal oxide, exhibits unique advantages in photoelectrocatalysis due to its high intrinsic catalytic activity and ability to serve as an active site for CO2reduction. SiO2, a widely used substrate, facilitates Cu loading and increases the specific surface area of the catalyst. Meanwhile, g-C3N4provides excellent visible-light responsiveness and efficient charge carrier mobility. Together, CuO, SiO2, and g-C3N4are earth-abundant, low-cost, and chemically stable, making them ideal for solar-to-fuel applications. Here, a novel ternary heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed using SiO2, CuO, and g-C3N4. The heterostructure significantly improves light-harvesting efficiency, promotes efficient charge separation and transport, and simultaneously mitigates photogenerated carrier recombination and catalyst corrosion. The resulting SiO2@CuO/g-C3N4catalyst demonstrates outstanding CO2conversion performance, achieving a CO yield of 17 mmolg−1h−1at 1.2 VRHEwith nearly 100% selectivity. Moreover, this work systematically investigates the electrocatalytic CO2reduction reaction (CO2RR) mechanism on Cu-based catalysts, offering insights into the formation of high-value multicarbon products and highlighting the potential of rational heterojunction design in enhancing solar-driven fuel production efficiency.

A room-temperature ppb-level H2S sensor based on MoO3/CuO/g-C3N4 via a simple synthesis

Cheng Feng,Congting Zhang,Chang Xu,Shuang Lin,Baohua Zhang,Huanxing Wu,Zheng Zhang,Xinming Guo,Haineng Bai,Fuqiang Guo

The detection of H 2 S for biomarkers or special occasions often requires a lower detection limit. In this work, the ppb-level H 2 S sensor based on MoO 3 /CuO/g-C 3 N 4 (MCC) was presented by a simple method. The characterized results show that MCC-2 possesses a larger specific surface area, and has more adsorbed oxygen and oxygen vacancy compared to MoO 3 and MoO 3 /CuO. The gas-sensitive test results show that the response of the MCC-2 sensor to 1000 ppb H 2 S is up to 8.24 at room temperature , which is 1.31 times of MoO 3 /CuO (6.28). More importantly, the theoretical detection limit of the MCC-2 sensor is as low as 1.1 ppb, which is the lowest in the recent H 2 S sensor. In addition, the MCC-2 sensor has reliable repeatability, excellent selectivity to H 2 S, and still maintains a high response after continuous test for 5 weeks. Simultaneously, the MCC-2 sensor also keeps an outstanding response at high relative humidity. The excellent gas sensing properties are due to the larger specific surface area that can enable more gases to be adsorbed on the material surface. In addition, the oxygen vacancy reduces the energy required to adsorb the target gas and the formed heterojunctions by MoO 3 /CuO/g-C 3 N 4 expedite carrier migration.

3D spherical CuO@g-C3N4 composites activating peroxymonosulfate for high efficient degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol: The mechanism of 1O2 generation

Sainan Wang,Chao Yuan,Wei Chen,Yifan Niu,Yexi Yan,Fan Li,Hongmei Jiang

A series of CuO@g-C 3 N 4 composites with different contents of g-C 3 N 4 and different morphologies of CuO have been designed and prepared by hydrothermal method and applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP). The results showed that 3D spherical shape CuO-1@g-C 3 N 4 -3, being able to activate PMS to produce a large amount of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), not only had good catalytic performance, but also reduced the dissolution of Cu 2+ . By comparing the morphological characteristics, catalytic performance, free radical species, decomposition rate of PMS and surface properties of three kinds of CuO, the generation mechanism of 1 O 2 and key reasons of CuO for producing 1 O 2 were deeply explored and finally deduced. Besides, under the conditions of initial pH 7.0, catalyst dosage 50 mg·L −1 , PMS dosage 0.3 mmol·L −1 and initial concentration of 2,4,6-TCP 10 mg·L −1 , the removal rate of 2,4,6,-TCP reached 94 % at 25 min in the first cycle, and 85 % in the fifth cycle. When CuO-1@g-C 3 N 4 was applied in actual water samples, 65 % of 2,4,6-TCP was removed in the Yangtze River, and 60 % of 2,4,6-TCP in Xuanwu and Yueya Lake in 40 min. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were used to indentify active species during degradation process and the degradation intermediates of 2,4,6-TCP and possible degradation pathways were determined and proposed by high performance liquid chromatography-time of flight-mass spectrometry (HPLC-TOF-MS 2 ). This study shed light on the 1 O 2 generation mechanism of catalyst and provided theoretical basis and guidance for the design of 1 O 2 catalysts rich in non-radical active species.

CuO/g-C3N4 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts as efficient peroxymonosulfate activators under visible light for oxytetracycline degradation: Characterization, efficiency and mechanism

Min Wang,Chongyue Jin,Jin Kang,Jiayun Liu,Yiwu Tang,Zhilin Li,Siyan Li

In the current work, a CuO/g-C 3 N 4 (Cu/CN) 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalyst was precisely designed to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible light irradiation. The as-fabricated catalysts were explored in detail on the base of the characterization results. The optimum 5Cu/CN can degrade almost 100% of oxytetracycline (OTC) by activating PMS under visible light in 10 min, and also displays high degradation efficiency toward tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP), levofloxacin (LVX) and sulfadiazine (SDZ). Additionally, the effect of experimental conditions on OTC degradation was investigated, and the stability of the catalysts was evaluated. The electron spin resonance (ESR) and quenching results verified the generation of multiple reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the size of their roles in OTC degradation followed the sequence •OH & SO 4 •−  >  1 O 2  > h +  > •O 2 − . The possible mechanism of higher OTC degradation efficiency in the 5CuO/CN/PMS/Vis system and the OTC degradation pathway were deeply explored. This work supplies a worthy reference for developing an efficient g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalytic technology for rapid and efficient antibiotic elimination from the environment.

A biophotoelectrocatalytic system for pollutant removal based on carbon fiber cloth supported TiO2 photoanode with oxygen vacancy defects and CuO/g-C3N4 photocathode

Jianqiao Liu,Kai Yan,Jingdong Zhang

As an advanced oxidation technology, photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) has been widely explored to degrade refractory contaminants in the environment. Meanwhile, enzymatic biodegradation provides an effective approach to removal of organic pollutants under mild conditions. Herein, we developed a biophotoelectrocatalytic system to remove bisphenol A (BPA) based on the combination of PEC and enzymatic biodegradation. We utilized carbon fiber cloth (CFC) as substrate to construct a dual-photoelectrode biophotoelectrocatalytic system based on three dimensional (3D) nanostructured TiO 2 photoanode with oxygen vacancy defects (Ov-TiO 2 /CFC) and enzyme-coupled CuO/g-C 3 N 4 /CFC photocathode. The excellent PEC performance of Ov-TiO 2 /CFC photoanode significantly promoted the formation of reactive radicals for the degradation reaction, ascribed to efficient separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. The proposed system displayed good synergistic effect between PEC and enzymatic catalysis for BPA removal, with more than 99% degradation efficiency after 90-min treatment. This work demonstrates CFC as a useful substrate material for constructing highly efficient biophotoelectrocatalytic degradation system for organic pollutant removal.

Design and synthesis of MOF-derived CuO/g-C3N4 composites with octahedral structures as advanced anode materials for asymmetric supercapacitors with high energy and power densities

Ziyang Zhu,Chuanying Wei,Di Jiang,Xinru Wu,Min Lu

In this study, two-component composites consisting of transition metal copper oxide (CuO) and graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were successfully synthesized. Firstly, a typical metal–organic framework (MOF) material, namely CuBTC, was prepared by the hydrothermal method. Then, the hollow porous CuO/g-C3N4 composite with an octahedron structure was obtained by introducing a certain amount of g-C3N4 into the system using ultrasonic treatment and rapid thermal annealing. The synthesized CuO/g-C3N4 not only retains the unique octahedral morphology of the CuBTC template, but also is coated by a uniform carbon layer. This CuO/g-C3N4 displays a high reversible specific capacity (1530.4 F g−1, 2 A g−1) as an anode material. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with self-made NiCoMOF as the cathode and CuO/g-C3N4 as the anode achieves an excellent energy density of 50.8 W h kg−1 at a power density of 800 W kg−1 and stable cycling performance (70.1% capacity retention over 3000 cycles). These outstanding electrochemical properties are attributed to the synergistic effect between transition metal oxides and carbon-based materials as well as the unique structure of the composites, which also provides a facile design and synthesis idea to construct high-performance transition metal compounds with a unique hollow structure and C-coating for developing asymmetric supercapacitors with high energy and power densities.
