CuO-CeO 2 -ZrO 2 /cordierite catalysts have been successfully prepared by the impregnation reduction method. The effects of processing parameters such as the condition of reduction process, calcination temperature, the addition of surfactant on the size and shape of catalyst particles were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The catalytic performance of the as-prepared catalysts for CO oxidation were evaluated by using a microreactor-GC system. The results indicate that the processing parameters influence greatly the size and shape of catalyst particles. Fragmental shape catalysts were formed when the impregnated samples were reduced in the thermostat water bath. However, spherical-like particles were obtained by ultrasonic-assisted in the reduction process. Tiny flower-like catalyst particles were found when the surfactant were used. When the calcination temperature decreased, the grain size of catalysts has reduced, and the catalytic activity for CO oxidation has been improved. The introduction of ultrasonic and surfactant resulted in larger specific surface area and better catalytic performance.

Achievement of the intrinsic activity by in situ electrochemical reconstruction has been becoming a great challenge for designing a catalyst. Herein, an effective electrochemical strategy is proposed to reconstruct the surface of the CF–CuO/CeO2 precursor. Under the stimulation of oxidative/reductive potential, abundant active sites were successfully generated on the surface of CF–CuO/CeO2. Remarkably, the implantation of oxygen vacancy-rich CeO2 synergistically optimizes the chemical composition and electronic structure of CF–CuO/CeO2, greatly promoting the generation of active species. Systematic electrochemical experiments indicate that the superior catalytic performance of reconstructed CF–CuO/CeO2 could be attributed to CuOOH/CeO2 and Cu2O/Ce2O3 active species, respectively. The oxidative-/reductive-activated CF–CuO/CeO2 was further employed in a paired cell for the synergistic catalysis of hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation with 4-nitrophenol hydrogenation. As a result, nearly 100% Faraday efficiency for furandicarboxylic acid/4-aminophenol production was achieved in the paired system (−0.9 V vs Ag/AgCl, 1.5 h). Therefore, the electrochemical reconstruction via oxidative/reductive activation has been confirmed as a feasible approach to significantly excite the intrinsic activity of a catalyst.

The impregnation method is one of the most popular methods for preparing various types of supported catalysts. However, the preparation of highly active catalysts by the conventional impregnation method is still a great challenge. In this paper, a modified impregnation method (MI) was developed to prepare CuO/CeO 2 catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of ethyl acetate (EA). It was found that the 5 %CuO/CeO 2 catalyst (5-MI-500) prepared by MI method achieves 100% EA conversion at a low temperature of 200 °C. However, the temperature for 100% EA conversion over the 5 %CuO/CeO 2 catalyst prepared by the conventional method is as high as 300 °C. Notably, the 5-MI-500 catalyst exhibits the highest proportion of well-dispersed CuO and Cu-O-Ce structures, which synergistically enhance catalyst activity. The well-dispersed CuO particles enhance the redox ability of the catalyst, while the Cu-O-Ce structure provides high activated oxygen via oxygen vacancy and better thermal stability during catalytic reaction. Accordingly, the possible reaction mechanism over the 5-MI-500 catalyst for EA oxidation was proposed. This study demonstrates that the MI method reported in this paper can provide a feasible methodology to prepare highly active catalysts with unique structures.

A heterogeneous catalyst CuO–CeO2 with a hollow structure was successfully synthesized by assembling CuO on the outer surface of CeO2 hollow spheres through a layer-by-layer deposition strategy. Further reduction under a H2 atmosphere was carried out to modify its surface state, resulting in sample r-CuO–CeO2. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). SEM and TEM showed that the synthesized catalysts had a hollow sphere structure, which can expose more active sites and promote mass transfer. The results of XPS revealed that the content of Cu0&Cu+ increased from 13.6 to 19.0% after H2 reduction, which was conducive to the activation of terminal alkyne to promote the annulation/A3-coupling reaction. The conversion of this cascade reaction with the r-CuO–CeO2 catalyst can reach more than 95%, while the value was only 55% by using CuO–CeO2 as a catalyst. Moreover, the r-CuO–CeO2 catalyst showed a good recycle property and group compatibility in the general applicability of the cascade annulation/A3-coupling reaction, providing a series of propargylamine derivatives in good chemoselectivity.

CuO–CeO2 nanocatalysts with different amounts of Mn dopping (Mn/Cu molar ratios of 0.5 : 5, 1 : 5 and 1.5 : 5) were synthesized by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) method and tested in the catalytic oxidation of CO. The physicochemical properties of the synthesised samples were characterized systematically, including using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), oxygen-temperature programmed desorption (O2-TPD), hydrogen-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). The results showed that the 1Mn–Cu–Ce sample (Mn/Cu molar ratio of 1 : 5) exhibited superior catalytic activity for CO oxidation, with the temperature of 90% CO oxidation at 131 °C at a high space velocity (SV = 60 000 mL g−1 h−1), which was 56 °C lower than that of the Cu–Ce sample. In addition, the 1Mn–Cu–Ce sample displays excellent stability with prolonged time on CO stream and the resistance to water vapor. The significantly enhanced activity was correlated with strong synergetic effect, leading to fine textual properties, abundant chemically adsorbed oxygen and high lattice oxygen mobility, which further induced more Cu+ species and less formation of carbon intermediates during the CO oxidation process detected by in situ DRIFTS analysis. This work will provide in-depth understanding of the synergetic effect on CO oxidation performances over Mn doped CuO–CeO2 composite catalysts through FSP method.

Several NiO–CuO–CeO 2 catalysts were prepared via different methods and characterized by different techniques. Structure-activity relationships of the catalysts were demonstrated, and the effect of preparation methods on CO oxidation behaviors was illustrated. Catalytic results evidenced that the NiCuCe-CP and NiCuCe-SG catalysts prepared by co-precipitation and sol-gel methods exhibited better CO oxidation activities and kinetic performance, as evidenced by their lower T 50 values (102 °C and 100 °C) and apparent activation energies (48.80 and 59.28 kJ/mol) as well as higher reaction rates (3.84 and 3.45 μmol/g/s). The XRD and HRTEM results suggested that the active species showed uniform dispersion with minimum crystallite size in the desired catalysts. The XRD, XPS , H 2 -TPR and Raman analysis suggested the formation of Ce 1- x Cu x O 2- δ and Ce 1- x Ni x O 2- δ solid solutions, indicating that the co-precipitation and sol-gel methods reinforced the interactions amongst the ternary metal oxides . This would afford the catalysts more oxygen vacancies for boosted CO oxidation activity. The mechanism was then proposed with the dual synergetic effects in solid solutions for facilitated oxygen mobility and the amorphous active metal oxides for promoted CO chemisorption . The desired NiCuCe-CP and NiCuCe-SG catalysts show potential application for CO abatement in closed-loop air revitalization.

The effect of several catalyst supports with large specific surface area (such as SiC, Al 2 O 3 , SiC–Al 2 O 3 –ball, and SiC–Al 2 O 3 ) on catalytic activity was evaluated in this study. CuO–CeO 2 supported on SiC–Al 2 O 3 exhibited high stability and activity, which was considerably close to the thermodynamic equilibrium curve at 625 °C during the stability test for 50 h. The SO 3 decomposition temperature decreased from 750 °C to 625 °C. SiC–Al 2 O 3 contained numerous micropores and mesopores and had a large specific area, indicating strong adsorption, as determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption measurement. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the surface of SiC–Al 2 O 3 consisted of Al 2 O 3 , SiC, and SiO 2 and that the cerium oxide surface had the largest number of defects. Temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) results indicated that the cerium–copper oxides on the surface of powdered SiC–Al 2 O 3 had the strongest redox potential and that CuO had the lowest reduction temperature.

CuO-CeO2nanocatalysts with varying CuO contents (1, 5, 9, 14 and 17 wt %) were prepared by one-step flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) and applied to CO oxidation. The influences of CuO content on the as-prepared catalysts were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption-desorption at −196 °C, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and hydrogen-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR). A superior CO oxidation activity was observed for the 14 wt % CuO-CeO2catalyst, with 90% CO conversion at 98 °C at space velocity (60,000 mL × g−1× h−1), which was attributed to abundant surface defects (lattice distortion, Ce3+, and oxygen vacancies) and high reducibility supported by strong synergistic interaction. In addition, the catalyst also displayed excellent stability and resistance to water vapor. Significantly, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) showed that in the CO catalytic oxidation process, the strong synergistic interaction led readily to dehydroxylation and CO adsorption on Cu+at low temperature. Furthermore, in the feed of water vapor, although there was an adverse effect on the access of CO adsorption, there was also a positive effect on the formation of fewer carbon intermediates. All these results showed the potential of highly active and water vapor-resistive CuO-CeO2catalysts prepared by FSP.Keywords:flame spray pyrolysis;synergistic interaction;CO oxidation;CuO-CeO2nanocatalyst;water resistance;carbon intermediate

The high-temperature H 2 S removal at 500–700 °C was conducted over CuO-CeO 2 /ZSM-5 composites prepared with sol-gel method. 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 partially reacting at 500 °C yielded Cu 7 S 4 and Cu 2 S. The major sulphidation products at 600 °C were Ce 2 O 2 S, Cu 2 S, CuS, and S. Sulphidation of 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 at 700 °C yielded Ce 2 S 3 , Cu 2 S, Cu 2 S, and S. Sulphidation of 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 with 20 % H 2 and 20 % CO generated the same products Ce 2 O 2 S, Cu 2 S, Cu 2 S, and S. Increase in the degree of crystallinity of 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 resulted in the decrease of sulphur capacity during the sulphidation and regeneration process. Experimental results showed that the activity of CuO improved by adding Ce; 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 performed the optimal sulphiation behaviour at 600 °C with sulphur capacity of 1429 μmol/g (micromoles of sulphur per gram) due to the synergy of CuO and CeO 2 . H 2 repressed sulphur removal, causing the reduction of sulphur capacity from 1429 to 1014 μmol/g. CO had little impact on sulphidation reaction; sulphur capacity only reduced from 1429 to 1221 μmol/g due to the presence of 20 % CO.

Methoxycarbonylation of aniline (AN) with dimethyl carbonate (DMC) to produce methyl N-phenylcarbamate (MPC), a key intermediate in non-phosgene diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) synthesis, is facilitated using a newly developed CuO–CeO2 catalyst. This catalyst demonstrated a high AN conversion rate of 95.1% and an MPC selectivity of 92.7% at an nDMC/nAN ratio of 10. The catalyst's effectiveness is attributed to the synergistic interaction between CuO and CeO2, which enhances oxygen vacancy generation and increases the acid amount, as well as Lewis acid sites. Weak Lewis acid sites are conducive to MPC synthesis. There are three distinct copper species present in the CuO–CeO2 catalyst, among which the copper species doped into the CeO2 lattice is beneficial to MPC synthesis. The deactivation of the catalyst, due to the reduction of CuO by methanol, and catalyst regeneration through calcination are discussed. The catalytic mechanism is explored with in situ FT-IR, providing deeper insight into the methoxycarbonylation process.

Harnessing inherent organic pollutants in wastewater to drive self-accelerated Fenton-like degradation establishes a sustainable water purification paradigm, wherein the central challenge centers on strategically regulating catalyst-pollutant interaction to optimize phenoxyl radical formation and leverage its inherent catalytic synergy. Here, we demonstrate that a CuO-CeO 2 heterostructure combining Cu(II) active centers with Ce(IV) electron reservoirs achieves unprecedented enhancement in phenoxyl radical generation efficiency. This breakthrough arises from two synergistical mechanisms: strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) elevates the d -band center of Cu to thermodynamically favor spontaneous electron abstraction from pollutants, while the electron buffering capability of CeO 2 accelerates the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycle for efficient active site regeneration. The optimized CuO-CeO 2 /persulfate (PDS) system exhibits 19.2-fold enhanced kinetic constant ( k obs ) for p -chlorophenol (4-CP) degradation compared to the CuO/PDS counterpart, alongside remarkable pH versatility across 3.5-10. Crucially, the phenoxyl radical-mediated oxidation demonstrates exceptional operational stability with consistent 100% 4-CP removal over eight consecutive cycles, contrasting sharply with the 56.3% efficiency decline observed in CuO. This work establishes a strategic framework for advancing phenoxyl radical-mediated AOPs (PR-AOPs) toward sustainable water purification technologies.

Real-time monitoring of toxic and harmful hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is crucial in the extraction process of fossil fuels. However, in the process of detecting H 2 S, there will be difficulties in desorption, low response, poor anti-interference ability, and poor long-term stability. The multidimensional copper oxide (CuO) composite cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) was synthesized by hydrothermal method and calcination techniques, and a gas sensor with easy desorption, high response, strong anti-interference ability, and excellent long-term stability for monitoring H 2 S was effectively prepared. Through various characterization tests such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), it was found that the composite material has multidimensional characteristics. When detecting 100 parts per million (ppm) of H 2 S at the optimal operating temperature of 180℃, the CuO/CeO 2 gas sensor with the optimal ratio (n Cu : n Ce =1:1) showed an extremely high response (2010). At the same time, the gas sensor has extremely strong anti-interference ability and excellent long-term stability. In addition, these excellent H 2 S sensing properties are attributed to the excellent oxygen storage characteristics of CeO 2 and the synergistic effect of CuO and CeO 2 . This provides more active sites for the absorption of H 2 S. Finally, to achieve real-time monitoring and alarm of H 2 S, a portable real-time monitoring and alarm device was made. When detecting different concentrations of H 2 S, it will flash corresponding color lights and give an alarm to achieve the monitoring function and ensure the safety and health of workers. The multi-dimensional CuO/CeO 2 prepared has excellent gas sensing performance, providing a new method for H 2 S detection.
