In this work, we proposed one simple and effective chiral-sensing method for the discrimination of carnitine enantiomers. The gold nanorods (AuNRs) were used as colorimetric probes to recognize carnitine enantiomers in this method. l -Carnitine can induce rapidly the blue-to-gray change of AuNR solution color, whereas d -carnitine cannot induce the obvious change of the color. Based on this distinct difference of color, a visual method for recognition of carnitine enantiomers was suggested. This method has been applied to detect the enantiometric excess of l -carnitine in the range of − 100~100%. The presented chiral measurement can be performed with a simple ultraviolet-visible spectrometer and even the naked eyes. In this method, AuNRs need no modification with chiral molecule, and the chiral recognition is based on the inherent chirality of AuNRs. This new method opens up possibility for fast and easy assay of carnitine enantiomers.

In this study, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was employed to augment the array of chiral recognition sites, thereby enhancing the affinity of GQDs/β-CD composite for imprinting molecules and realizing heightened chiral selectivity. The incorporation of GQDs/β-CD into the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), synergizing with the host-guest inclusion properties of β-CD and the abundant carboxyl groups of GQDs, enhanced the chiral recognition capacity of MIPs materials. Consequently, a novel MIPs/(GQDs/β-CD) sensor with chiral recognition capabilities tailored for D-carnitine was successfully fabricated. The binding mechanism between GQDs/β-CD and D-carnitine was elucidated via Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The variation in the response signal (ΔI) of the probe molecule exhibited a linear correlation with the logarithm of D-carnitine concentration (lgC) in the range of 1.0 × 10−12mol/L to 1.0 × 10−9mol/L, and the detection limit (3δ/S) was calculated as 2.35 × 10−13mol/L. These results underscore a 7.15-fold enhancement in the selectivity of MIPs/(GQDs/β-CD) sensor for D-carnitine recognition. Moreover, the sensor presented commendable efficacy in real-world scenarios, yielding recovery rates ranging from 98.5% to 103.0% during the determination of D-carnitine content in real samples.

Chiral drugs are drugs with chiral or asymmetric centres in their molecular structure. Different enantiomers of the same chiral drug have noticeably different pharmacological activities and pharmacokinetic properties. However, its distinction has been perplexing scholars for many years in the qualitative and quantitative detection of antagonistic drugs. Conventional detection methods, such as polarimetry, circular dichroism, and high-performance liquid chromatography, are time consuming, cause sample loss and have cumbersome operations, and they can be applied only to the sampling method. In this paper, we propose a fast, accurate, qualitative and quantitative method for the study of chiral drugs based on linearly polarized terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and imaging technology. Taking ibuprofen as an example, based on the THz absorption spectra of the enantiomers RS-ibuprofen, (R)-(−)-ibuprofen, and (S)-(+)-ibuprofen, their characteristic peak frequencies, peak amplitude differences and peak area differences were extracted to qualitatively and quantitatively distinguish and identify the three substances. THz spectral imaging provides more intuitive results than those obtained from previous methods. In quantitative identification, the stability and detection accuracy of THz spectroscopy are much greater than those of Raman spectroscopy (88.8–99.8% vs. 21.42–94.62%, respectively). The qualitative recognition accuracy was 100%, and the quantitative recognition standard deviation was less than 0.01, and it is also a non-destructive testing method. Furthermore, the above method combined with principal component analysis (PCA) and the support vector machine (SVM) neural network classification algorithm was applied to the analysis of other chiral drugs. These results are significant for the rapid, accurate and non-destructive identification of chiral drugs.

Chiral enantiomers have different pharmacological and pharmacokinetic characteristics. It is important to strictly detect chiral component for avoiding being harmful to the human body due to side effects. Terahertz (THz) trace fingerprint detection is essential because the molecular vibrations of various biological substances such as chiral enantiomers are located in THz range. Recent reported enhanced trace fingerprint technologies have some drawbacks. For instance, multiplexing technology suffered from narrow operation range and limitation by frequency resolution of commercial THz time domain spectroscopy; Absorption induced transparency (AIT) identification for narrowband molecular oscillations suffered from random resonance frequency drift due to fabrication error. In this paper, we proposed frequency-selective fingerprint sensor (FSFS), which can experimentally achieve enhanced trace fingerprint detection by both broadband multiplexing technology and robust AIT identification. Such FSFS is based on polarization independent reconfiguration metasurfaces array. Broadband absorption lines of trace-amount chiral carnitine were boosted with absorption enhancement factors of about 7.3 times based on frequency-selective multiplexing at 0.95–2.0 THz. Enhanced trace narrowband α-lactose fingerprint sensing can be observed at several array structures with absorption enhancement factors of about 7 times based on AIT, exhibiting good robustness. The flexibility and versatility of proposed FSFS has potential applications for boosting trace chiral enantiomer detection as well as diversity of molecular fingerprints identification by both multiplexing and AIT.
