Polymorphs of energetic materials generally exhibit distinct features, such as density, thermal stability, sensitivity, and detonation performance. These features are important in determining the appropriate applications of a given polymorph. To understand the thermal stability of new high explosive 4,4′,5,5′-tetranitro-1H,1′H- [2,2′-biimidazole]-1,1′-diamine (DATNBI), we systematically investigated its polymorphic transition (PT) under thermal stimulation and discovered a novel stable γ form of DATNBI. The results showed that the solid-solid PT path was β → α → γ . In this study, the three polymorphs of DATNBI were prepared through solvent recrystallization, and their PT processes in solution were explored. Crystal structure analysis of γ -DATNBI suggested that its special cross-cross grid crystal packing may be the main reason for its stable existence at room temperature and its lack of PT process before chemical decomposition, which starts at 240 °C. To further explore the PT process of DATNBI, the solid phase transition mechanism of DATNBI was analyzed using non-isothermal kinetics. The results demonstrated that the two high-temperature PT processes— β → α and α → γ —were not single-step reactions but complex multi-step reactions. The PT activation energy of the β → α process was slightly higher than that of the α → γ process. In addition, the influences of different polymorphs on the performance of DATNBI were explored. The results revealed that safety and detonation performance should decrease as a result of the incorporation of γ -DATNBI. This study contributes to understanding the PT behavior and the crystal structure evolutionary mechanism of DATNBI. This study provides practical support for formula design, process condition selection, and thermal stability evaluation of DATNBI explosives.

The ignition strategy of energetic materials using low-energy near-infrared (NIR) laser has garnered significant attention due to its enhanced safety and reliability. This study explores the use of a relatively photosensitive but mechanical insensitive energetic material, DATNBI, to facilitate the self-assembly of nano-CL-20 crystals into polycrystalline particles though solvothermal induction, yielding a rough structure conducive to NIR laser ignition. The findings demonstrate that by adjusting the content of DATNBI, it is possible to achieve micro-nano controllable spherical CL-20/DATNBI (C/D) particles, with CL-20 as the primary component and DATNBI as the auxiliary component. The incorporation of DATNBI and the rough surface structure enhance the light absorption of C/D particles in the NIR band. Additionally, the unique synergistic effect between CL-20 and DATNBI during thermal decomposition further promotes NIR laser ignition. As expected, the C/D particles achieved self-sustained combustion and exhibited excellent combustion performance under a 1064 nm laser, which is challenging to be achieved with raw CL-20 or raw DATNBI. Furthermore, the relatively insensitive DATNBI and spherical structure reduced the impact sensitivity of the C/D particles. This multifunctional material strategy, integrating energy, safety, environment-friendliness, and laser ignition performance, offers a novel approach for laser ignition of energetic materials.

Based on the characteristics of laser-induced surface ignition, energetic photosensitive films show promising potential to meet the ignition requirements of various energetic materials (EMs). In this study, DATNBI/ferric alginate (DI/FeA), DI/cobalt alginate (DI/CoA), and DI/nickel alginate (DI/NiA) films are fabricated by employing sodium alginate (SA) with a three-dimensional network structure as the film matrix, via ionic cross-linking of SA with Fe 3+ , Co 2+ , and Ni 2+ ions. The study demonstrates that the ionic cross-linking enhances the hydrophobic performance of the films, with the water contact angle increasing from 82.1° to 123.5°. Concurrently, the films’ near-infrared (NIR) light absorption improved. Furthermore, transition metal ions facilitate accelerated electron transfer, thereby catalyzing the thermal decomposition of DATNBI. Under 1064 nm laser irradiation, the DI/FeA film exhibits exceptional combustion performance, with an ignition delay time as low as 76 ms. It successfully acts as an NIR laser ignition medium to initiate the self-sustained combustion of CL-20. This study demonstrates the synergistic realization of enhanced hydrophobicity, improved photosensitivity, and promoted catalytic decomposition through microstructural design of the material, providing new insights for the design of additive-free EMs in laser ignition applications.

A novel type of 4,4′,5,5′-tetranitro-1H,1′H-(2,2′-biimidazole)-1,1′-diamine (DATNBI)/TNT energetic cocrystal (cocrystal-1) was prepared by the solvent evaporation method. The molar ratio of the cocrystal is 1:2 and the crystal density is 1.784 g cm−3 at 23°C. It belongs to the triclinic system with space group P1. The thermal stability, mechanical sensitivity and detonation performance of cocrystal-1 were studied. Compared with DATNBI, the mechanical sensitivity (H50 and FS, friction sensitivity) and thermal stability (Td, detonation temperature) of cocrystal-1 were significantly improved (H50, FS and Td of DATNBI and cocrystal-1 are, respectively, 27.8 cm, 160 N, 240°C and 65.6 cm, >360 N, 253°C). Combining these results with other characterizations, it was found that cocrystal-1 exhibited a polymorphic transformation, phase separation and melting of the two single components in succession. The ability to control the properties and understand the structural stability of this explosive cocrystal is of great value.

An all-energetic HNS/DATNBI composite enables efficient NIR laser ignition. • Surfactant-induced recrystallization enhances DATNBI NIR light absorption. • H-20%D achieves rapid 1064 nm laser ignition with a delay of 71 ms. • The composite exhibits a peak decomposition temperature of 334.6°C. • H-20%D/Al/PVDF film achieves rapid laser ignition with a 10 ms delay. Developing all-energetic composite materials with high laser responsiveness, thermal stability, and energy density is essential for advancing laser ignition technologies under harsh conditions. Herein, a surfactant-assisted recrystallization strategy was developed to construct an all-energetic HNS/DATNBI composite by integrating thermally stable hexanitrostilbene (HNS) with DATNBI as an energetic photosensitizer. Surfactant-regulated recrystallization effectively tailors the crystal morphology and surface microstructure of DATNBI, resulting in significantly enhanced near-infrared (NIR) absorption and photothermal response. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that HNS and DATNBI can spontaneously assemble into a stable composite structure through strong intermolecular non-covalent interactions, with a binding energy of −2.03 eV. The optimized HNS/DATNBI composite can be readily ignited by a 10 W, 1064 nm laser, exhibiting stable combustion with an ignition delay of only 71 ms. Meanwhile, the composite maintains relatively high thermal stability, with a decomposition peak temperature of 334.6°C, together with reduced mechanical sensitivity compared with pristine HNS, achieving a favorable balance between laser ignitability and safety. Furthermore, the NIR-responsive composite was successfully incorporated into an Al/PVDF energetic film, reducing the ignition delay to approximately 10 ms. These results demonstrate that surfactant-regulated recrystallization of an energetic photosensitizer provides an effective strategy for constructing thermally robust and highly NIR-responsive energetic composites.
