X1 (MeO-TPD) is an inexpensive and easily synthesized π -conjugated molecule that has been used as a hole-transport material (HTM) in solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (ssDSSCs), achieving relatively high efficiency. In this paper, we characterize the physicochemical properties of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and show that it is a promising p-dopant in a spin-coating solution with X1 as the HTM. The doped ssDSSCs showed an increase in short-circuit current density from 5.38 mA cm –2 to 7.39 mA cm –2 , and their overall power conversion efficiency increased from 2.9% to 4.3%. Also, ssDSSCs with DDQ-doped X1 were more stable than the undoped samples, demonstrating that DDQ can act as a p-type dopant in X1 as an HTM for highly efficient, stable ssDSSCs.

In this study, two counterexamples of lignin preoxidation-hydroconversion were reported. First, two lignin feedstocks were preoxidized with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) in acetonitrile with various dosages (15%, 30%, and 60%). Then, these preoxidized lignins (HELOs and MWLOs) were hydroconverted in supercritical ethanol catalyzed by Cu/CuMgAlO x . Total yields from HELOs were all higher than those from HEL , indicating the good promotion of DDQ preoxidation on the subsequent hydroconversion of HELOs, especially with the DDQ dosage of 15%. Differently, the promotion effect of DDQ preoxidation on the hydroconversion of MWLOs depended on the DDQ dosage as well as the reaction time. Through the comparison of two counterexamples, this work bursted the myth that preoxidation can always promote the subsequent hydroconversion of lignin, revealed the influence of lignin property, preoxidation degree, and reaction conditions on the subsequent hydroconversion of preoxidized lignin, and presented the new insight into the preoxidation-hydroconversion strategy for lignin.

DDQ-assisted ball milling is valid in oxidizing lignin and activating cellulose. • The pretreatment promotes corn stalk humification at relatively low temperatures. • DDQ serves as a nitrogen source to improve the nitrogen content in resultant A-HA. • The A-HA markedly enhances the soybean drought resistance. • The enhanced antioxidant capacity and osmotic regulation are drought contributors. The production of artificial humic acid (A-HA) via hydrothermal humification offers a promising route for the valorization of waste biomass. However, its practical application is often hindered by several limitations, including low yield, inadequate nitrogen content, and limited reactivity resulting from a deficiency in oxygen-containing functional groups. To address these challenges, this study developed a DDQ-assisted ball milling pretreatment to facilitate the corn stalk humification. After hydrothermal treatment at 105 °C for 24 h, the proposed method increased the artificial humic acid (A-HA) yield from 14.91% to 18.71% and artificial fulvic acid (A-FA) yield from 3.12% to 5.06%. This improvement was ascribed to DDQ’s role in selectively oxidizing lignin and activating cellulose, which consequently enhanced the depolymerization and conversion of these recalcitrant components, thus promoting humification. Moreover, DDQ also served as a nitrogen source, collectively leading to the formation of A-HA with a higher nitrogen content and more oxygen-containing functional groups. These modified characteristics contributed to the superior effectiveness of the resulting A-HA in improving soybean drought resistance over its unpretreated counterpart. This study established a circular model from “agricultural waste to synthetic humic acid and ultimately back to agricultural application”, providing a viable technical strategy for advancing sustainable agriculture. PFO-DDQ is a donor−acceptor (D–A) type conjugated polymer, with its backbone consisting of 95% 9,9-di-octylfluorene (DOF) and 5% 2,3-dimethyl-5,8-dithien-2-yl-quinoxalines (DDQ). PFO-DDQ nanoparticles (NPs) suspensions are prepared using the nanoprecipitation method by varying the precursor solution concentration. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of the nanoparticles is determined by the energy transfer between the fluorene and the narrow-bandgap DDQ segments. The fluorescence of the NPs can be tuned from orange to blue by adjusting the concentration of the precursor solution. PFO-DDQ, the nonfullerene acceptor small molecule (ITIC), and PFO-DDQ/ITIC bulk heterojunction (BHJ) NPs suspensions are prepared using the nanoprecipitation method, and their photocatalytic antibacterial properties are evaluated. The results showed that, under 2 h of exposure to a 35 mW cm − 2 LED light, the antimicrobial rates of the three 40 µg mL −1 nanoparticles suspensions against Escherichia coli ( E . coli ) are 98.28%, 100%, and 99.88%, respectively. The enhanced light absorption, improved charge transfer efficiency, and the crystalline phase of ITIC contributed to the faster photocatalytic antibacterial rate of PFO-DDQ/ITIC BHJ nanoparticles.
