Chirality is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature. The advent of nanomaterials has led to a gradual evolution of chiral studies from the molecular scale to the nanoscale. The emergence of carbon dots (CDs) has inaugurated a novel domain in the scientific and technological realms of carbon nanomaterials. In recent years, CDs have attracted increasing attention due to their luminescent properties, excellent biocompatibility and remarkable bioactivity. However, little attention has been paid to the chirality of the CDs and, in particular, the differences between CDs synthesized from racemic compounds and other chiral CDs, as well as the differences in the biological effects of chiral CDs, remain to be explored. Here, chiral CDs were synthesized from L-/D-/DL-arginine, and the differences in various aspects of chiral CDs were evaluated. We found that L-CDs without extreme differences in structure had brighter fluorescence and a more significant ability of NO generation and lipid droplet inhibition than the other two chiral CDs. Combined with its better drug loading and release ability, we validated its superior efficacy in tumor treatment. Therefore, this study provides a basis for further research on chiral carbon dots and their differences.

Mesoporous carbon hollow spheres coated with MoS 2 (C@MoS 2 ) were synthesized to obtain a material with large specific surface area, fast electron transfer efficiency and good water dispersibility. The composite material was applied as a matrix for the analysis of small molecules by surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SALDI-TOF MS). The use of a core-shell C@MoS 2 matrix strongly reduces matrix background interferences and increases signal intensity in the analysis of sulfonamides antibiotics (SAs), cationic dyes, emodin, as well as estrogen and amino acids. The composite material was applied to the SALDI-TOF MS analysis of selected molecules in (spiked) real samples. The ionization mechanism of the core-shell C@MoS 2 as a matrix is discussed. The method exhibits low fragmentation interference, excellent ionization efficiency, high reproducibility and satisfactory salt tolerance.
Schematic representation of the method for fabrication of MoS 2 -coated mesoporous carbon hollow spheres (core-shell C@MoS 2 ). As a new matrix, the nanocomposites were applied to analysis of small molecules by surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

In this work, a novel core–shell structured gold@graphitized mesoporous silica nanocomposite (Au@GMSN) was synthesized by in situ graphitization of template within the mesochannels of mesoporous silica shell on gold core and demonstrated to be promising nanomaterials for surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (SALDI-TOF MS). The integration of the graphitized mesoporous silica with the gold nanoparticles endowed Au@GMSN with large surface areas of graphitic structure, good dispersibility, and strong ultraviolet (UV) absorption. Au@GMSN exerted the synergistic effect on the efficient detection of small-molecular-weight analytes including amino acids, neutral saccharides, peptides, and traditional Chinese medicine. The Au@GMSN-assisted laser desorption/ionization exhibited the following superiorities: high ionization efficiency, low fragmentation interference, favorable salt tolerance, and good reproducibility. Moreover, because of the large hydrophobic inner surface area of the graphitized mesoporous silica shell, the Au@GMSN demonstrated its promising capacity in the pre-enrichment of aromatic analytes prior to SALDI-TOF MS, which favored rapid and sensitive detection.

Poor efficacy in solid tumor immunotherapy mainly ascribed to few CD8 + T cells infiltration with low activity in tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment (TIME). Ferroptosis can be harnessed for activating system immune response for more CD8 + T cells infiltration. However, the activity of infiltrated CD8 + T cells will be heavily weakened by the nutrient barrenness and immunosuppressive microenvironment, which formidably impaired the biologically closed-loop reciprocal process between active CD8 + T cells and cellular ferroptosis. Considering the above two key influence factors, we herein elaborately labeled l -Arginine (Arg) with 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (PA) via reversible Schiff-base bond, and then drive nanoassembly of PA-Argby iron ions mediation (Fe@PA-Arg NPs). Iron released from Fe@PA-Arg NPs in acidic tumor environment could produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thus successfully induce immunogenic ferroptosis of cancer cells. Subsequently, promoting the dendritic cells maturation and CD8 + T cells infiltration. Meanwhile, ROS could also induce the lipid peroxidation of tumor associated macrophages that contributed to mitochondrial dysfunction, thereby repolarized M2 to M1 phenotype to relieve the immunosuppression. Arg released from Fe@PA-Arg NPs as nutrient supply to restore infiltrated T cells’ activity by combining Arg metabolic adaption with immunosuppressive mitigation. Reciprocally, restored activated CD8 + T cells could secrete high levels of Interferon-γ, which in turn enhances ferroptosis, thereby successfully initiating and forming a closed-loop, and the tumor inhibition rate of 63.5% was achieved. This study highlights a novel and facile strategy to improve the immunotherapeutic efficiency of murine 4T1 solid tumors.
