Abstract The solubility of DL-malic acid in methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, ethyl acetate and acetonitrile in the temperature range 283–318 K was measured by acid–base titration method. The solubility of DL-malic acid increased with elevating temperature. The solubility data were correlated by the modified Apelblat, Buchowski–Książczak, Van’t Hoff, Wilson, and non-random two-liquid equations. The calculation results showed that these equations provide good prediction with the acceptable ARD values and RMSD values among all the satisfactory fitting results given by each equation. The mixing Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy of real solution were derived based on the Wilson equation and the measured solubility data.

In the present work, the synergistic corrosion inhibition effects between sodium fluoride (NaF) and DL-malic acid (DMA) on Mg-Al-Mn magnesium alloy in the pH neutral NaCl solution were studied through a visual identification based high-throughput screening method and a series of characterization techniques. The highest inhibition efficiency (94.1%) and synergistic factor (3.8) were achieved when an equal amount (0.05 M) of components was mixed. This excellent anti-corrosion performance was achieved by the formation of a particle-refined perovskite (NaMgF 3 ) film on the alloy surface resulting from the incorporation of DMA in the nucleation and growth of NaMgF 3 .

This study employed ultrasound (US) pretreatment with different media—water (W), ethanol (EtOH), dl -malic acid aqueous solution (DLMA-W), and dl -malic acid ethanol solution (DLMA–EtOH)—on Chinese yam ( Dioscorea opposita ), with no US as control, to systematically investigate the effects of pretreatment methods on infrared-assisted spouted bed drying (IRSBD) characteristics and product quality. The results showed that all pretreatments reduced the drying time and specific energy consumption to varying degrees. However, only US + W and US + DLMA-W treatments significantly increased the moisture diffusion coefficient in IRSBD. Among all pretreatments, US + DLMA-W effectively enhanced water gain (which facilitated the opening of natural pores in the yam matrix) and reduced bound water content, resulting in a 40.07% reduction in drying time for IRSBD compared to control. The treated samples also exhibited the highest rehydration ratio (RR) (1.79 ± 0.03) and total phenol content (91.43 ± 7.84 mg GAE/100 g DW), as well as superior 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging capacity (35.58 ± 1.27 mg VCE/100 g DW). In contrast, EtOH-associated pretreatments (EtOH, DLMA–EtOH, US + EtOH) showed no significant improvement in RR, total phenolic content, or DPPH scavenging capacity compared to the control group ( p > 0.05). Therefore, US + DLMA-W pretreatment emerges as the optimal approach, offering a promising solution for industrial-scale agricultural product drying that simultaneously improves processing efficiency and end-product quality.

Nowadays, the practical application for high-performance silicone rubber (SR) was constrained and limited by its intrinsic flammability, which would be usually solved by the incorporation of halogenated or heavily loaded phosphorus-based flame retardants. The extensive reliance on halogen-/phosphorus-based retardants would not only pose the irreversible risk to human health and ecological environment, but also raise the serious sustainability concerns about the progressive depletion of phosphate resources. Moreover, the insertion of these conventional flame retardants would inevitably compromise the mechanical properties of SR materials, which was not feasible for enhancing the application value and scopes in real life. Inspired by hierarchical structure of onion, a halogen-/phosphorus-free and bio-based flame retardant system (CMs@PDA@LDH@MM) was rationally engineered via a hierarchical assembly strategy by integrating renewable glucose-derived carbon microspheres with polydopamine (PDA), Ni-Al layered double hydroxides (LDH), and melamine-malic acid complex (MM). When the content of CMs@PDA@LDH@MM was 16 %, a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 29.9 % and a UL-94 V-0 rating of SR composites were achieved together with substantial peak heat release rate (PkHRR) reduction of 56 % and smoke production rate (SPR) of 67 %, suggesting the excellent flame retardancy and fire safety performance. This fact was ascribed to the integration of multiple flame-retardant mechanism into a single hierarchical CMs@PDA@LDH@MM hybrid via the synergistic action between catalyzed charring and gaseous dilution/heat absorption ability. Furthermore, SR composites were endowed with the excellent resistance to flame impact and glow-wire ignition (GWFI > 960 °C). Most of all, the mechanical robustness of SR composites was significantly improved with a Young’s modulus increment of 708 % and the elongation at break of 332 %, which would thereby enable the structural self-sustainability under load-bearing condition. In a nutshell, the intrinsic limitation of conventional additive approach was addressed in simultaneously achieving the balanced flame retardancy and mechanical performance, which was expected to provide a new and clean insight for the rational design of sustainable and halogen-/phosphorus-free flame-retardants in the fields of construction and buildings, cables and wire, new energy vehicles and aerospace.

This study presents an improved ethanol-mediated solvothermal method for synthesizing malic acid/urea-derived carbon dots (MUCDs) for the highly selective and sensitive detection of mercury ions (Hg2+). The detection limit was enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to previous methods employing similar precursors, achieving a limit of detection of 88.46 nmol L−1, which meets the European Union standard for mercury discharge in industrial wastewater (250 nmol L−1). Pyrophosphate (P2O74−) has been used as a highly effective masking agent for Fe3+, substantially boosting the probe's performance in complex matrices. With practical application in mind, the environmental safety of these carbon dots was proactively evaluated using a zebrafish model. The assessment demonstrated no significant toxicity at concentrations up to 100 mg L−1, establishing a 10-fold safety margin relative to the operational dosage. Fluorescence imaging revealed accumulation specifically in the intestinal tract, with no distribution to vital organs, confirming their environmental safety. Under optimized conditions, the MUCDs achieved a quenching efficiency of 0.82 in the presence of 25 µmol per L Hg2+ at a concentration of 10 mg L−1, while also demonstrating thermal stability and pH tolerance. Spike-recovery tests in tap water, river water, and metallurgical wastewater samples yielded satisfactory recoveries ranging from 93.85% to 101.86%. Based on the characterization of MUCDs and the MUCDs–Hg2+ complex, the observed quenching mechanism was explained by chelation between Hg2+ and surface functional groups, leading to aggregation, static quenching, and enhanced Rayleigh scattering. This study highlights the critical importance of incorporating comprehensive environmental safety assessments into the development of functional nanomaterials.

Tumor-resident microbiota are identified as a critical modulator in the carcinogenesis and progression of cervical malignancies. However, the mechanisms linking these microbiota to cervical cancer remain poorly understood. In this study, we find that patients with cervical cancer exhibit increased microbiota diversity, characterized by eight distinct bacterial species that distinguish them from control subjects. Intratumoral or intravenous administration of an isolated strain, Gordonia polyisoprenivorans GP-2, derived from tumor-resident microbiota, significantly promotes the growth and metastasis of cervical cancer in mice. Further investigation reveals that GP-2 metabolizes host-derived choline to produce the bacterial metabolite lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC). We propose and validate the biosynthetic pathway for lysoPC in strain GP-2 and demonstrate that lysoPC activates the classical tumorigenic genes c-Jun / c-Fos using cervical tumor organoids derived from patients. These findings elucidate the mechanisms underlying microbiota-host crosstalk in cervical cancer and highlight a potential therapeutic target for intervening in tumor-resident bacteria.

Indisciplinable dendrite growth, harsh side reactions, and sluggish kinetics at the Zn electrode/electrolyte interface severely obstruct the commercialization of zinc-metal batteries. Besides, the development of wearable devices has set a higher demand for the safety and biocompatibility of batteries. Herein, an in situ acid dipping approach is devised to spontaneously construct a functional and antibacterial interfacial layer containing carbonyl oxygen groups on the surface of zinc foils, using aqueous malic acid (denoted as MZ@Zn electrode) to tackle the above issues. The interfacial layer possesses satisfactory zincophilicity, promoting the ion kinetics and homogenizing the Zn deposition/dissolution. The MZ layer tightly adhered to the Zn electrode, and the deliberately exposed (0 0 2) Zn planes assure favorable anticorrosive quality. Moreover, the MZ layer possesses high antimicrobial activity, ensuring biological safety. Consequently, the MZ@Zn electrodes display ultralong cycle stability over 3500 h at 5 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the full cells installed with LiFePO 4 /C (LFP/C) and NH 4 V 4 O 10 (NVO) cathodes exhibit superior electrochemical performances. Therefore, the stabilized zinc-metal anode achieved by acid etching to spontaneously construct a functional interfacial layer provides a simple and effective strategy for aqueous zinc-metal batteries.

Nitrite, as a widely present nitrogen oxide compound in nature, and is extensively distributed in production and daily life; precise and rapid detection of it is of great significance for ensuring human health. This study developed nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) using malic acid and 3-diethylaminophenol as precursors by one-step hydrothermal treatment. The obtained N-CDs exhibited strong green fluorescence with a high quantum yield of 20.86%. More importantly, they served as a highly effective fluorescent probe for NO2−sensing, demonstrating a low detection limit of 28.33 μM and a wide linear response range of 400 to 1000 μM. The sensing mechanism was attributed to an electrostatic interaction-enhanced dynamic quenching process. Notably, the probe enabled dual-mode detection: a distinct color change from light pink to dark brown under daylight for visual semi-quantification, and quantitative fluorescence quenching. The N-CDs showed excellent selectivity over common interfering ions. Furthermore, their low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility allowed for successful bioimaging of exogenous and endogenous NO2−fluctuations in live HeLa cells. This work presents a facile green strategy to synthesize multifunctional N-CDs that realized the sensitive, selective, and visual detection of NO2−in environmental and biological systems.

In this study, the hexane extract of Asters tataricus was used as the carbon source, and ethylenediamine and 4-bromophenylene diamine were selected as dopants to prepare nitrogen and bromine co-doped carbon dots (N,Br-CDs) by the hydrothermal synthesis method. The obtained fluorescent probe has a uniform particle size distribution, good water solubility and high stability, with a fluorescence quantum yield of 48.43%. Under 420 nm excitation conditions, N,Br-CDs exhibited the strongest fluorescence emission at 513 nm, indicating that the sensing system was in the “ON” state. Subsequently, TA was introduced as a quencher to induce static quenching of the N,Br-CDs system, significantly weakening the fluorescence intensity and switching the sensing system from “ON” to “OFF”. Finally, after EM was introduced into the N,Br-CDs/TA system, EM preferentially formed a complex with TA and weakened its quenching effect on the quantum dots, thereby achieving fluorescence recovery and returning the sensing system from the “OFF” state to the “ON” state. Based on the above mechanism, an “ON-OFF-ON” fluorescence sensing system with N,Br-CDs as the luminescent substrate was constructed for the sensitive detection of TA and EM. The results showed that the system exhibited good linear response to TA, with the linear ranges being 1.50–22.94 μM and 34.88–348.42 μM, respectively, and the limits of detection being 0.2168 μM and 2.1797 μM, respectively (LOD, S/N = 3). The linear range for EM was 1.93–377.08 μM, with a detection limit of 0.6693 μM. Furthermore, the sensor system was capable of quantitatively determining TA and EM in human serum, Huangshui River water, and milk matrices, demonstrating its potential for broad application in environmental monitoring and bioanalysis.

A pulsed ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) strategy enabled high-efficiency tannin extraction from chestnut burr waste, yielding 104.40 ± 4.31 mg TAE/g DW—2.1-fold higher than conventional aqueous extraction. Comprehensive mechanistic investigations revealed synergistic effects: DES components enhanced hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction with tannins, while a favorable solvation energy barrier (ΔG = −85.15 kcal/mol) facilitated extraction. Advanced spectroscopic analysis (FT-IR, HPLC-IT-TOF-MS 2 ) demonstrated DES-induced structural stabilization of hydrolysable tannins, with key components exhibiting a 3.1-fold increase in relative abundance. Specifically, DES was found to suppress water activity while forming protective tannin-DES complexes, as evidenced by characteristic upfield 1 H NMR shifts (Δδ = −0.19 ppm) and distinct vibrational frequency changes. The sustainability of this method was validated through five successful recycling trials and comprehensive green metric assessments. DES-extracted tannins demonstrated >1.2-fold enhanced antioxidant capacity and superior antibacterial activity compared to aqueous extracts. This work establishes an innovative method for agroforestry waste valorization and advances green extraction technologies.

Extraction of Paeoniae Radix Rubra polysaccharide (PRRP). • Firstly, the PRRP was extracted by Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent (NADES). • Firstly, the PRRP was extracted by ChCl-CA (1.5, 3:2) with 40% ( w / w ) water. • AGREEprep and BAGI confirmed ChCl-CA’s greenness: polysaccharide yield >9%, solvent recovery >80%. • Firstly, the neuroprotective activity of PRRP in Parkinson's disease was evaluated. Firstly, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) were used to extract polysaccharides from Paeoniae Radix Rubra (PRR). Using polysaccharide yield and neuroprotective cell activity as evaluation criteria, a solvent composed of 40% ( w / w ) water, choline chloride (ChCl), and citric acid (CA) was selected as the optimal solvent. It exhibited low viscosity, high surface tension, moderate polarity, and strong acidity. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra of the ChCl-CA confirmed the formation of hydrogen bonding. Response surface methodology (RSM) optimized conditions: molar ratio: 1.5 (3:2), extraction temperature: 60 °C, extraction duration: 64 min, solvent-solid ratio: 36 mL·g −1 , the polysaccharide yield reached 16.74%, which was 1.89 times that of the hot water extraction, and the SH-SY5Y cell activity in the methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP + )-induced PD model was 86.86%. The obtained PRR polysaccharides (PRRP) were further characterized, with protein content of 5.23% and uronic acid content of 19.09%. PRRP was mainly composed of arabinose, glucose, and galacturonic acid. Its molecular weights are 73.381, 11.475, and 3.539 kDa. PRRP was characterized via Ultraviolet-Visible (UV–Vis) and FT-IR spectroscopy, confirming typical polysaccharide structures. After 6 cycles, the polysaccharide yield of recycled NADES decreased from 16.26% to 9.22% in the final extraction, a 43.30% decrease. Two classical green evaluation models quantitatively confirmed the process's environmental friendliness. In addition, in vitro experiments showed that PRRP could increase dopamine (DA) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) levels, reduce lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and decrease α -synuclein ( α -Syn) accumulation. This study highlights the efficiency of ChCl-CA as a green extractant and reveals the neuroprotective effect of PRRP. The accurate non-enzymatic electrochemical detection of glucose is constrained by sluggish charge transfer kinetics and non-optimized adsorption of reaction intermediates on single-phase transition metal oxide. Herein, we rationally design heterojunction Co 3 O 4 /NiMoO 4 hierarchical arrays, where a spontaneous built-in electric field (BEF) is formed at the p-n hereo-interface due to the precise work function difference in NiMoO 4 and Co 3 O 4 . This BEF directionally drives electrons from NiMoO 4 to Co 3 O 4 at 0.16 |e|, as confirmed by DFT charge density and Bader charge analysis, thereby accelerating glucose electrocatalytic oxidation kinetics. Moreover, the hierarchical structure of Co 3 O 4 nanoneedles grown on NiMoO 4 nanorods enhances the electrochemical active area and introduces dual catalytic sites of Co and Ni atoms, whose d-band centers are modulated to weaken excessive adsorption at Co sites while maintaining Ni activity. As a results, the assembled sensor achieves an ultrahigh sensitivity of 28,470 μA mM −1 cm −2 , a low detection limit of 0.396 μM and excellent recovery rates (94.6%–105.6%) in complex real samples. This work demonstrates that resolving the charge transfer and adsorption trade-off via BEF-engineered heterostructure offers a generalizable route for high-performance sensing.
