In the present work, a novel poly(arylene ether ketone) with a unique molecular design that included concentrated flexible sulfoalkyl groups and a silane cross-linked network (C-SPAEK) was prepared and used as a PEM for DMFCs . The chemical structures , sulfonation degree and phase-separated morphology were characterized and identified by 1 H NMR, FT-IR and SAXS. The resulting copolymers exhibited excellent thermal stability (T 5% >263.8 °C) and mechanical properties (tensile strength>52.88 MPa). Additionally, the high IEC values and obvious hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase-separated structure (d > 2.71 nm) ensured that the C-SPAEK membranes possessed high proton conductivities . The C-SPAEK PEMs also displayed enhanced methanol resistance and dimensional stability, which were much better than those of a recast Nafion membrane under the same conditions. The C-SPAEK-0.4 membrane maintained a low methanol absorption of less than 48.7%, even in 4 M methanol solution. In particular, the C-SPAEK-0.6 membrane exhibited the best comprehensive performance, with a high proton conductivity (0.164 S cm −1 ), low methanol uptake (52.1%) and permeability (3.63 × 10 −7 cm 2 s −1 ), and maximum power density (83.2 mW cm −2 ), when immersed in 2 M methanol at 80 °C in a DMFC single-cell. These results suggested that the C-SPAEK membranes were sufficiently tough and had the potential to overcome the problems caused by the high methanol permeability of PEMs. The unique molecular design of C-SPAEK guaranteed a rare combination of high proton conductivity and enhanced methanol resistance, which are the key determining factors for DMFC applications .

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), as an important reaction carried out on the cathode of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC), directly affects the performance of the cell. Previous experimental studies have shown that there are some interactions between the defect structure and N doping to promote the ORR performance of the catalysts. In this work, the binder was first utilized to reduce the lignin content in the cotton straw (CS) system, thereby increasing the defective structure of the carbon substrate. Here, we obtained 5C-NP-Fe catalysts by increasing the defectivity of the carbon substrate through binder. The coordination environment surrounding the Fe-N 4 sites is optimized by the synergistic action of the N and P atoms and the faulty structure, as shown by DFT theoretical calculations. In alkaline medium, half-wave potentials as high as 0.88 V in the three-electrode system and a peak power density of 10.8 mW cm −2 in a direct methanol fuel cell at 60℃. Compared to a 20 wt% commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.84 V, 7.5 mW cm −2 ), 5C-NP-Fe showed good ORR activity. The binder modification strategy provides a simple and green approach to the structural optimization of biomass-based catalysts.

The development of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) that combine high proton conductivity with long-term durability remains a key challenge in fuel cell technology. This study proposes a strategy that constructs multiple proton transport channels through anchoring phosphoric acid via basic groups and incorporating a phosphotungstic acid (HPW)-functionalized expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) framework. By immobilizing phosphoric acid (PA) through alkaline groups on the sulfonated polyimide (SPI) backbone, the composite membrane maintains high proton conductivity even under low water uptake conditions. Meanwhile, the ePTFE framework effectively suppresses membrane swelling and enhances its mechanical strength. Specifically, the reinforced composite membrane (SPIC50PA-0.22-HPW) demonstrates excellent overall performance: at 80 °C, it achieves a proton conductivity of 0.47 S/cm, a swelling ratio of only 1.6% and a methanol permeability of 0.08 × 10⁻⁶ cm²/s. Furthermore, the membrane exhibits outstanding PA retention capability, maintaining over 90% of its conductivity after 720 h of water immersion. In single-cell tests at 80 °C, the composite membrane delivers a peak power density of 212 mW/cm², outperforming Nafion 212 (186 mW/cm²). These advancements significantly enhance the potential of SPI-based PEMs in clean energy applications.

The electrocatalyst of oxygen reduction reactions is one of the basic components of a fuel cell. In addition to costly Pt/C benchmark catalysts, cost-effective carbon-based catalysts have received the most attention. Enormous efforts have been dedicated to trade off the catalyst performance against the economic benefit. Optimizing composition and/or structure is a universal strategy for improving performance, but it is typically limited by tedious synthesis steps. Herein, we have found that directly introducing CNT into MOF-derived carbonaceous nanopolyhedra, i.e., introduced carbon nanotubes (CNTs) penetrated porous nitrogen-doped carbon polyhedra (NCP) dotted with cobalt nanoparticles (denoted as CNTs-Co@NCP), can optimize the catalytic activity, stability, and methanol tolerance. The hierarchical architecture combines the 0D/1D/3D Co/CNT/NCP interfaces and 1D/3D CNT/NCP junctions with the frameworks with a greatly exposed active surface, strengthened mass transport kinetics, stereoscopic electrical conductivity networks and structural robustness. The sterical self-consistency of MOF-self-assembly triggered by introduced CNTs demonstrates tactful ORR electrocatalytic activity regulation. Eventually, the CNTs-Co@NCP showed a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.86 V and a diffusion-limited current density (JL) of 5.94 mA/cm2in alkaline electrolyte. The CNTs-Co@NCP was integrated into the cathode of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) with an anion-exchange membrane, and an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.93 V and a high power density of 46.6 mW cm−2were achieved. This work successfully developed a catalyst with competitive ORR performance through plain parameter fine-tuning without complex material design. Keywords:oxygen reduction reaction;sterical self-consistency;carbon-based catalyst;stereoscopic conductive network;DMFC

Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-graft-poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PVDF-g-PSBMA) proton exchange membranes were synthesized via single-step grafting sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) onto PVDF. Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) was the initiator, and the PVDF was initially modified by tetramethylammonium
hydroxide (TMAH) in the liquid phase. Microstructure morphologies and sulfur distributions in the membrane were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), respectively. The PVDF formed C=C
double bonds following dehydrofluorination by TMAH. SBMA was grafted onto the modified PVDF backbones, forming a homogeneous sulfur distribution in the interior and exterior of the membrane. Proton conductivities and methanol permeabilities of PVDF-g-PSBMA membranes increased with the increasing
of the TMAH mass fraction in methanol. When the mass fraction was 20%, the proton conductivity of the membrane was 0.0892 S·cm-1 at 20 , and the methanol permeability was 4.04 × 10-7 cm2·s-1 at ambient temperature, respectively.
The membrane exhibited good thermal stability up to 270 , as verified by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). With this membrane, the peak power density of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was 17.06 mW·cm-2.

To enhance the large-scale manufacture of zinc-air batteries (ZAB) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC), high-performance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts must be developed. In this study, corn stalk binder (CS binder) was added to corn stalk (CS), the ratio between the two was adjusted, and the structure and morphology of the carbon material was altered to create a biocarbon substrate material (15 wt% N/C (CS)) with ORR catalytic activity. It had a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) that was 29 mV greater than the pure carbon substance from CS (0 wt% N/C(CS)). Using Fe and N coordination-Hemin, an iron single-atom catalyst (15 wt% Fe N/C (CS)) was created based on this. Commercial Pt/C catalysts are anticipated to be replaced by the 15 wt% Fe N/C (CS), which demonstrated exceptional peak power density in both DMFC and ZAB cell tests. The catalytic mechanism of 15 wt% Fe N/C (CS) is explained by density functional theory (DFT), whereby the 15 wt% N/C (CS) carbon substrate rich in faulty structures creates space for the effective use of the iron single-atom reactive sites. Furthermore, the Fe N sites reduced the overpotential of ORR, which promoted the adsorption and reduction of oxygen molecules at the active sites.

Proton exchange membranes with high ionic conductivity and good chemical stability are critical for achieving high power density and long lifespan of direct methanol cells (DMFCs). Herein, a zwitterionic molecule was grafted onto the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers to obtain functionalized PVDF porous substrate (SBMA-PDA@PVDF). Then, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was filled into the pores of SBMA-PDA@PVDF, and further ionic cross-linked via H 2 SO 4 to prepare the composite membrane (SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK). The basic groups on the zwitterionic interface could not only establish ionic cross-linking with SPEEK to increase chemical stability and reduce swelling, but also serve as the adsorption sites for subsequent H 2 SO 4 cross-linking to significantly enhance proton conductivity. Super-high proton conductivity (165.34 mS cm −1 , 80 °C) was achieved for the membrane, which was 2.12 times higher than that of the pure SPEEK. Moreover, the SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK membrane exhibited remarkably improved oxidative stability of 91.6 % mass retention after soaking in Fenton’s agent for 12 h, while pure SPEEK completely decomposed. Satisfactorily, the DMFC assembled with SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK exhibited a peak power density of 99.01 mW cm −2 , which was twice as much as that of commercial Nafion 212 (48.88 mW cm −2 ). After 235 h durability test, only 11 % voltage loss was observed.
