The exceptional specificity of biological olfactory sensing has motivated efforts to tackle the persistent challenge of low selectivity in chemiresistive-type gas sensors. In this paper, we draw inspiration from biological recognition mechanisms for organophosphonates and develop n-type hydroxylated reduced graphene oxide (HRGO) as a molecular olfactory sensor for the sarin surrogate, methyl dimethylphosphonate (DMMP). HRGO is synthesized through a controlled selective reduction of graphene oxide, converting most of the oxygen-containing groups into hydroxyl groups. The corresponding sensor demonstrates ultrahigh selectivity for DMMP at room temperature, with a fast response time of approximately 5 seconds and a detection limit as low as 5 ppm. Furthermore, we grafted calix[6]arene onto HRGO via van der Waals forces, significantly enhancing the Schottky contact between HRGO and the Au electrode, which in turn improved the sensor's stability. Additionally, the introduction of the hydrophobic aromatic rings in calix[6]arene boosted the sensor's humidity resistance of low-concentration detection resolution. A possible bionic sensing mechanism was then proposed, in which DMMP was first adsorbed by the electron-rich conjugated benzene rings of n-type HRGO, followed by phosphonylation at the hydroxyl sites. This work offers valuable insights into the field of molecular olfactory sensing as well as artificial olfaction.

HighlightsWhat are the main findings?A 2 mol% Sn2+-doped CuFe2O4sensor was produced for DMMP detection. The sensor demonstrated suitable sensing performance and selectivity toward DMMP.What is the implication of the main finding? The superior response–recovery characteristics and enhanced moisture resistance compared to the undoped sensor are relevant in gas-sensing applications.Sarin poses a serious threat to human health, necessitating the development of an appropriate sensing technology.Sarin is an extremely toxic and fast-acting chemical warfare nerve agent that poses a serious threat to human health, necessitating the development of appropriate sensing technologies. Dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), which has a chemical structure similar to that of sarin but is non-toxic, is often used as a simulation agent in related research. Among promising gas-sensing materials, CuFe2O4exhibits suitable thermal stability. It is easily produced and has low toxicity. Its performance can be enhanced using heterogeneous ion doping to increase the number of surface defects and content of adsorbed oxygen. Therefore, a solvothermal method was adopted in this study to prepare CuFe2O4hollow microspheres that were subsequently doped with different ratios of Sn4+or Sn2+. Detailed characterizations of the obtained materials were conducted, and the corresponding CuFe2O4-based gas sensors were fabricated. Their gas-sensing performance against DMMP was studied to analyze and discuss the gas-sensing and sensitization mechanisms associated with Sn4+and Sn2+doping. The CuFe2O4-based sensor doped with 2 mol% Sn2+exhibited excellent gas-sensing performance in response to a 1 ppm concentration of DMMP, with response and recovery times of 12 and 63 s, respectively. Notably, its response to 1 ppm DMMP (16.27) was 3.3-fold higher than that to 1 ppm 2-CEES (4.98). The doped CuFe2O4sensor exhibited superior response–recovery characteristics and enhanced moisture resistance compared to the undoped sensor.

The metal oxides-based chemiresitive gas sensors have attracted enormous interest because of their exellent sensing perforamcnes, which have emerged as very promising candidates for gas monitoring. However, from the view of organophosphorus compounds detection, a unique combination of low detection limit and fast respons/recovery rate remains challenging. Herein, the synersgitic effects of oxygen vacancy engineering and surface gold decoration enabling excellent sensing performances for detection of dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP, a typical organophosphorus) is reported. To demonstrate the proof of concept, Au nanoparticles (NPs) decorated oxygen vacancy-enriched SnO 2 hybrids (designated as Au-O-SnO 2 ) were designed as sensing materials, where the O-SnO 2 samples were fabricated by introduction of oxygen vacancies onto commercial SnO 2 through organometallic chemistry-assisted approach using (CH 3 ) 2 SnCl 2 as precursor, followed by deposition of Au NPs by an in-situ reduction routine. After optimizing Au NPs content in hybrids (1 wt%, 3 wt%, 5 wt% and 7 wt%), O-SnO 2 decorated with 5 wt% Au NPs (designated as Au-O-SnO 2 -5) exhibits excellent DMMP sensing performances, such as, an enhanced recoverable response of 1.67 to 680 ppb DMMP, low detection limit of 4.8 ppb, short response time of 26 s and recovery time of 32 s, as well as good selectivity , which are much better than that of commercial SnO 2 (C-SnO 2 ) and O-SnO 2 , and Au NPs decorated C-SnO 2 . Based on the detailed investigation, the enhanced DMMP sensing performances of Au-O-SnO 2 hybrids can be mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of increasing surface active sites induced by oxygen vacancies, the chemical and electronic sensitization of Au NPs. As a result, Au-O-SnO 2 -5 hybrids display relatively low activation energy of 24.11 kJ/mol for DMMP oxidization, which is lower than that of O-SnO 2 (35.54 kJ/mol). Our results provide a feasible method for boosting sensing performances for DMMP detection, paving new way for fabrication of metal oxides-based gas sensors for rapid detection of trace organic compounds with complexed structures.

The graphene-based room-temperature chemiresistive gas sensors have low sensitivity (especially for ppb-level organophosphorous compounds, OPCs), limiting their practical applications. Herein, a novel coupling single-atom Cu and N-enriched, π-conjugated carbon nanodots (NCDs) strategy is proposed to synthesize graphene-based sensing materials with excellent room-temperature DMMP sensing performances. Taking rGO-NCDs-Cu as the example, the N-enriched structures facilitate the adsorption of DMMP by providing more active sites and strengthening the hydrogen bonding interactions between -NH 2 and DMMP molecules. The π-conjugated structures can construct large π-delocalization network promoting charge generation and transport. The N-enriched and π-conjugated structures also result in narrowing band gap of NCDs, effectively enabling the increase of carrier transfer rate. Moreover, the introduction of single-atom Cu sites with Cu-N 2 Cl 2 structure further strengthens the hydrogen bonding interactions between sensing materials and DMMP molecules. Benefiting from this novel coupling strategy, rGO-NCDs-Cu sensor shows high response value of 13.95 % towards 340 ppb DMMP at room temperature. Meanwhile, rGO-NCDs-Cu sensor exhibits short response time (77 s) and recovery time (198 s), low practical limit of detection (34 ppb), excellent repeatability and high selectivity. Our work offers a new strategy for rational design of graphene-based materials for detection of OPCs at room temperature.

Dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) is commonly used as a simulant for sarin in calibrating organophosphorus detectors. Among various DMMP sensors, surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors are gaining significant attention for their attributes of wireless monitoring, digital outputs, and cost-effectiveness. However, there is a significant challenge remained as it is difficult to simultaneously improve sensitivity and reduce limit of detection (LOD) when monitoring the DMMP at room temperature. In this study, a comprehensive strategy was developed by applying Cu ion-doped ZrO 2 (Cu-ZrO 2 ) nanocomposite as a high-performance sensitive layer coated onto an ultrahigh frequency (4.98 GHz) SAW sensor for detecting low concentration DMMP at room temperature under ultraviolet (UV) light activation. The developed ultrahigh frequency SAW DMMP sensor demonstrated an exceptional sensitivity of 1198.2 kHz/ppm, ∼1198 times higher than that of a conventional SAW sensor operated at a frequency of 162.4 MHz. It showed an ultralow LOD of 10 ppb, rapid response/recovery times of 39 s/25 s, and a long-term stability up to 30 days. Such the exceptional performance is primarily attributed to the Cu-ZrO 2 sensitive layer, of which the doped Cu ions lead to the formation of more unsaturated Zr 4 + ions, increasing the Lewis acid sites and promoting the effective interactions between Lewis sites and DMMP molecules. In addition, attributed to the ultrahigh resonant frequency of the SAW device, a giant elastic loading effect was identified to significantly enhance the sensing performance. This study provides a promising and versatile methodology for achieving ultrahigh sensitivity DMMP detection based on the SAW technology.

Mesoporous TiO 2 -SiO 2 functionalized with p-hexa-fluoroisopropanol aniline (HFIP) was designed and synthesized to achieve highly sensitive and selective sensing toward nerve agent simulant dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) due to a hydrogen bonding between target DMMP and TiO 2 -SiO 2 -HFIP. The sensing experiments were conducted by coating compounds onto quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) transducers. It was found that the observed frequency shifts gradually and turned saturated in the range from 10 to 60 ppm. Gas sensing test results revealed that sensors had enhanced sensitivity due to the decoration of HFIP on TiO 2 -SiO 2 in a ppb level. Furthermore, when the doping of HFIP reached 20 wt%, the sensors achieved the best sensing performance. In conclusion, the QCM sensor coated with mesoporous TiO 2 -SiO 2 -HFIP exhibited fast response, excellent reversibility and high selectivity to nerve agent stimulant DMMP vapor, implying that mesoporous TiO 2 -SiO 2 -HFIP may be a good candidate for sensing DMMP.

Development of room-temperature gas sensors with excellent sensing performances for detection of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP, a simulant of organophosphate) has aroused considerable attention. However, the weak adsorption ability of sensing materials toward DMMP molecules causes poor sensing performances. In this work, a multisite strategy for enhancing sensitivity was proposed by introduction of both N-doped carbon nanoparticles (N-CNPs) and copper ions onto the surface of rGO (designated as GNC). Impressively, optimal GNC-3 exhibits the response value of 10.2% toward 100 ppm DMMP, which is 5.3 times higher than that of pristine rGO. This mechanism for multisite-assisted enhanced DMMP sensing performances was investigated by combined characterizations of Fourier-transform infrared spectra, UV-Vis spectra, photoluminescence spectra and Mott-Schottky curves. Besides the construction of multisite, improvement of hydrogen bonding interactions between DMMP molecules and N-CNPs in hybrids assisted by copper ions, and decrease of conduction band potential by formation of ternary hybrids also contribute to enhance the sensitivity of DMMP sensors. These findings not only provided new insights into designing high-performance room-temperature gas sensors, but also promoted the fundamental research on sensing mechanism for room-temperature gas sensors.

A Pt@CeLaCoNiOx/Co@SnO2laminated MOS sensor was prepared using Co@SnO2as the gas-sensitive film material and Pt@CeLaCoNiOx as the catalytic film material. The sensor was verified to exhibit good sensing performances for dimethyl methylphosphonate, a simulant of Sarin, under a temperature modulation, and characteristic peaks appeared in the resistance response curves only for dimethyl methylphosphonate. The Article Swarm Optimization-Backpropagation Neural Network had a good ability to identify the resistance response data of dimethyl methylphosphonate. The identification accuracy increased as the concentration of dimethyl methylphosphonate increased. This scheme can effectively identify whether the test gas contained dimethyl methylphosphonate or not, which provided a reference for achieving the high selectivity of the MOS sensor for Sarin.

Oxide chemiresistors have gained considerable attention for detecting warfare nerve agents such as sarin gas over the years, yet have failed to materialize due to poor selectivity. To address this challenge, we presented the design of a bilayer DMMP chemiresistor, where using Au nanoparticles (NPs)-loaded ZnFe 2 O 4 as sensing layer, and zeolite as filtering layer, for detecting dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP)—as stimulant nerve agent sarin. Compared with monolayer Au-ZnFe 2 O 4 chemiresistor showing acetone sensing properties, the bilayer sensor could detect trace-level (50 ppb) DMMP exclusively with high selectivity, repeatability, and stability, which was attributed to the pre-decomposing of interfering gases on zeolite overlayer as confirmed by the mass spectrometer. Additionally, the highly active Au NPs, that promoted the adsorption and activation of oxygen, facilitates DMMP sensing reaction occurs on the surface of Au-ZnFe 2 O 4 sensing layer, which was further researched on quasi-in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). This work opened up a way for sarin gas detection using bilayer oxides chemiresistors.

The development of fast-response, high sensitivity and selectivity gas sensors for monitoring of organophosphorus is essential, where two dimensional graphene-based materials possessing exceptionsal carrier mobility are considered as promising candidates for room-temperature organophosphorus detection. However, it is challenging to fabrication of graphene-based gas sensors for detection of organophosphorus with excellent sensing performances. Herein, we develope a self-redox strategy to synthesize polypyrrole decorated-reduced graphene oxide hybrids (PPy-rGO) by redox reactions between pyrrole and GO during hydrothermal treatment process. This self-redox strategy results in the formation of perfact interfical strucutre between PPy and rGO through the π-π interactions without the impurity from the conventional oxidation/reducing agents. Most importantly, such PPy-rGO hybrids can be used as novel sensing materials for detection of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) at room temperature. Specially, the response of PPy-rGO-based sensor towards 100 ppm DMMP can reach 12.9 %, which is 3-fold higher than that pristine rGO-based sensor. Meanwhile, PPy-rGO-based sensor exhibits short response time/recovery time (43 s/75 s), low detection limit (5 ppm), excellent repeatability, and high selectivity. By combination of FT-IR and N 2 sorption isotherms, the enhanced DMMP sensing performances of PPy-rGO hybrids are concluded as following two aspects. Firstly, the formation of hydrogen bonds between PPy-rGO hybrids and DMMP molecules regulates the adsorption/desorption of DMMP. Secondly, increasing BET surface area by introduction of PPy into rGO matrix is beneficial to DMMP diffusion among the sensing materials. Our work would offer a new strategy for rational development of graphene-based materials for detection of organophosphorus at room temperature.

There is an urgent need for effective and portable gas sensors toward organophosphorus (OP) vapors in the areas of anti-terrorism and pesticides residue monitoring. Herein, we report a series of urea-functionalized SBA-15 (UXs/SBA-15: U1/SBA-15, U2/SBA-15 and U3/SBA-15) prepared by post-grafting methods and their applications in trace-level dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP, lab simulate of toxic OP agents) sensing by means of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) transducers. U3/SBA-15 based QCM sensors exhibited excellent responses and remarkable selectivity toward DMMP vapors. A frequency shift (Δ F ) of −50 Hz was achieved when the DMMP vapors reached 30 ppb. And the limit of detection (LOD) of QCM sensor modified with U3/SBA-15 was found at 12.25 ppb. Moreover, the simulated adsorption enthalpies (Δ H ) of UXs and DMMP molecules were calculated with Gaussian 09 to investigate the sensing mechanism. The results indicated the existence of chemisorption between UXs and DMMP molecules caused by hydrogen-bonding interactions, among which a minimum Δ H (−71.96 kJ mol −1 ) between U3 and DMMP molecule was found, resulting a maximum response to DMMP compared with U1-DMMP (−52.53 kJ mol −1 ) and U2-DMMP (−57.01 kJ mol −1 ). Therefore, the well-defined UXs/SBA-15 lead to a great potential on the detection of OP vapors.

The development of room-temperature chemiresistive gas sensors with low limit of detection, high sensitivity, and selectivity for dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) detection remains a challenge. Herein, a synergy of the two intermolecular hydrogen bond-promoted approach was proposed to fabricate a room-temperature DMMP sensor with enhanced performances. As a proof of concept, ternary p-hexafluoroisopropanol phenyl (HFIP) functionalized polypyrrole-reduced graphene oxide hybrids (HFIP-PPy-rGO) were rationally designed. During the sensing process, rGO serves as a conductive carrier, ensuring that the sensors operate at room temperature, and both HFIP and PPy act as adsorption sites for DMMP through hydrogen bonding interactions. As expected, the HFIP-PPy-rGO sensor exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to DMMP. Besides, the HFIP-PPy-rGO sensor also possesses excellent linear response to DMMP and long-term stability. Experimental results and quartz crystal microbalance measurements prove that the specific recognition of DMMP is realized by forming two intermolecular hydrogen bonds between HFIP and DMMP, as well as PPy and DMMP. Additionally, the introduction of HFIP groups also contributes to adjusting device conductivity, enhancing signal conversion function. To put the DMMP sensor into potential practical application, the obvious sensing response to different DMMP concentrations in soil was confirmed, and a wireless detection system was built to realize real-time monitoring of DMMP concentrations in the surroundings. Overall, this study provides a facile and practical solution for improving the sensing performance of room-temperature sensors based on the hydrogen bond theory.
