The separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite in porphyry copper–molybdenum ores is challenging owing to their similar floatabilities, making the use of depressants necessary. Inorganic depressants are commonly employed in the flotation industry to increase the difference in hydrophobicity between chalcopyrite and molybdenite; however, these depressants pose significant environmental risks. Recently, novel organic depressants have attracted considerable interest because of their abundance and low toxicity. This study investigated the use of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD), an activator recently employed in copper oxide flotation, as a depressant for the separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. Micro–flotation experiments demonstrated that DMTD exhibits a notable selective depression effect, significantly suppressing the flotation of chalcopyrite without adversely affecting the flotation of molybdenite. Furthermore, DMTD maintained its depression effect on chalcopyrite flotation even in the presence of xanthate. Contact angle measurements were used to analyze changes in hydrophobicity, corroborating the micro–flotation results, while SEM-EDS elemental distribution maps further confirmed the selective adsorption of DMTD on the chalcopyrite surface. XPS and AFM analyses were conducted to elucidate the microscale interaction mechanism between DMTD and chalcopyrite. The specific interaction sites on the chalcopyrite surface were identified through changes in elemental binding energies, while the evolution of surface morphology revealed how DMTD interacts with chalcopyrite in the xanthate system.

Self-healing coatings doped by nano-containers loaded with inhibitors have shown remarkable anti-corrosion efficiency and durability in extending metal life and slowing down coating failure. However, low loading capacity of corrosion inhibitors in nano-containers is a problem plaguing the further development and application of smart coatings. In this study, mesoporous silica with large pore sizes (MSN) was synthesized using the soft template method which significantly increased the loading capacity of the corrosion inhibitor, and a smart self-healing composite coating was designed, which could protect carbon steel from corrosion and provide durable protection for it. Specifically, the composite coating (EP/DMTD@MSN-PAA) was prepared by incorporating mesoporous silica nano-containers embedded with 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) molecules into the epoxy resin coating. The results of BET test showed that the prepared MSNs had high specific surface area (734.97 m 2 /g) and large pore volume (0.85 cm 3 /g). The thermogravimetric (TG) analysis showed 35.7% of loading amount of corrosion inhibitors in the nano-materials. Response release experiments showed that the DMTD@MSN-PAA had of acid-response release characteristics. When pH value of the system decreased from 7 to 3, the release amount of the DMTD molecules increased from 40.3% to 93.7%. The contact angle test showed that the epoxy resin (EP) coating had a contact angle value of 57.7°, while those of the composite coatings doped with 1 wt%, 3 wt% and 6 wt% DMTD@MSN-PAA (EP/DMTD@MSN-PAA) were 65.1°, 75.2° and 67.2°, respectively. These results indicated that the composite coatings had better hydrophobicity compared to the EP coating, and were conducive to prolonging the coating service time. The anti-corrosion performances of both the EP and the composite coatings with different doping amounts of DMTD@MSN-PAA were evaluated by EIS measurements. The R ct value of the EP coating decreased from 190.3 to 25.1 Ω · cm 2 within the time of 48 h of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, while ones of the EP/DMTD@MSN-PAA coatings doped with 1 wt%, 3 wt% and 6 wt% of DMTD@MSN-PAA increased from 303.1, 720.7.7, 523.4–1426.4, 2113.8, 1066.3 Ω · cm 2 , respectively. In addition, the corrosion resistance of the EP and composite coatings were further evaluated by etching experiments. The results showed that after 35 d of immersion, compared with that of the EP coating, surface corrosion degree of the composite coatings was lower, and the scaling off speed of the coatings slowed down, which further proved that the composite coating had strong corrosion resistance and special self-healing characteristics.

Lead (Pb(II)) contamination is common in liquid foods and can result from Pb(II) being present in the raw materials or during handling processes. However, due to the complexity of food matrices, there is limited data available concerning Pb(II) ion removal from food sources. This study focused on fabricating a PVA/PAA/DMTD electrospun nanofibrous membrane (ENFM) to efficiently and selectively remove Pb(II) ions from liquid foods. The PVA/PAA/DMTD ENFM had a maximum adsorption capacity of 138.3 mg/g for Pb(II) ions and demonstrated high selectivity toward the removal of Pb(II) ions. Negative values of the Gibbs free energy (Δ G °) showed that the spontaneous nature of the adsorption process was feasible at different temperatures. Moreover, it successfully removed Pb(II) ions from selected samples of commercially available drinks. Therefore, this adsorbent exhibits significant potential for removing Pb(II) ions from liquid food products, thereby reducing daily dietary exposure to Pb(II).

The deep purification of trace heavy metals in drinking water is of great significance and has received considerable attention worldwide. 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) functionalized magnetic ZIF-8 adsorbent (Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8-DMTD) using a novel one-pot post coordination modulation method at room temperature could effectively adsorb trace heavy metals from drinking water through cooperating with the abundant functional groups and surface charges. The negative surface charges promoted the rapid accumulation of trace heavy metals on the surface of the adsorbent, meanwhile, the abundant thiol/nitrogen sites contributed to their adsorption, thus the adsorption rate and adsorption capacity of trace heavy metals were greatly improved. For trace Pb(II) (150 ppb), the effluent concentration could meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standard (≤10 ppb) within 10 s after adsorption by Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8-DMTD, and the cumulative adsorption capacity that met WHO standard was 12.11 mg/g. Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8-DMTD also showed high stability in a broad pH range and excellent adsorption performance in a wide low concentration range. The effluent concentration still could meet the WHO standard when the initial Pb(II) concentration was 11.70 ppm, and the corresponding adsorption capacity reached 35.00 mg/g. Moreover, the capture experiments for multiple heavy metals that coexisted in tap water showed that the effluent concentrations of Hg(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III) could be lower than the allowable limits in a few minutes. The adsorbent could also be easily recovered using magnets and regenerated by thiourea solution, which showed great application potential for the purification of trace heavy metals in drinking water.

The commercialization of Li-S batteries is constrained by the unstable interface, severe shuttle of polysulfides, and sluggish kinetic conversion reactions. Electrolyte regulation is a straightforward and efficient way to tackle those mentioned issues. Herein, a multifunctional electrolyte additive of 2,5-Dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) is introduced in the ether-based electrolyte, which can be lithiated into Li 2 -DMTD when contacted with the Li or Li 2 S during the discharge process. The generated Li 2 -DMTD can operate as a highly ionic-conducting protective coating on the Li surface, inhibiting the formation of Li dendrites, and increasing interface stability. Then, it is reversibly oligomerized with Li 2 S, forming two organosulfur oligomers during the ensuing electrochemical process. Such a modified reaction routine can reduce the shuttle effect and speed up the reaction kinetics of Li 2 S at the cathode, preventing cathode passivation and boosting active material utilization. As a result, The Li||Li symmetric cells with DMTD exhibit about 5-fold cycle life than the reference cell under 5 mA cm −2 current density. Meanwhile, the initial charge voltage of Li||Li 2 S battery is greatly decreased from 3.7 V to 3.0 V with DMTD, and the assembled Li-S cell shows an improved capacity retention from 45.7 % to 81.2 % after 320 cycles. Therefore, this work successfully tackled the critical issues by designing functional organosulfur electrolyte additives in LSBs, which provides theoretical guidance for the electrolyte design in LSBs.

Chrysocolla exhibits low flotation recovery because of its strong surface hydrophilicity and the structural constraint of surface Cu active sites, hindering the effective action of activators and collectors. In this study, an EDA–DMTD synergistic activation system was constructed to regulate the surface chemical state of chrysocolla and elucidate its flotation enhancement mechanism. Micro-flotation results showed that, after EDA–DMTD treatment, the recovery of chrysocolla increased to 87.69%, whereas the maximum recovery was only 40.32% when DDTC alone was used. FESEM–EDS and FIB-TEM/HRTEM analyses showed that a continuous interfacial product film with a thickness of approximately 30–33 nm was formed on the chrysocolla surface. XPS detected newly introduced N and S species and identified Cu(I)–S bonding features, confirming the chemical reconstruction of the mineral surface. ICP-OES and ToF-SIMS results showed that EDA promoted the release and migration of Cu, whereas EDA–DMTD enhanced the adsorption of DMTD and DDTC-related species and decreased the signals of hydrophilic species. Correspondingly, the contact angle improved from 20.72° to 91.36°. These results revealed the interfacial mechanism of the synergistic activation of chrysocolla by EDA–DMTD.

In industrial production, copper oxide ore can be effectively enriched using 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) as an activator. However, the effects of copper oxide components in the slag have not been studied. In this study, the chemical state and spatial distribution of activated species were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations clarified the molecular adsorption geometry of DMTD on CuO surfaces. In addition, zeta-potential characterization confirmed the reagent-mediated alteration of CuO surface electrical characteristics. Time-of-flight secondary mass ion spectrometry revealed the distribution characteristics of the activated products on the CuO surface. Finally, contact-angle analysis indicated the change in the surface wettability of CuO after treatment. This work establishes a theoretical foundation for ecofriendly processing of copper smelting slag and is of considerable significance for promoting efficient and economical Cu extraction.

A widely applicable Zn-DMTD-MOGs was prepared via direct construction strategy. • Zn-DMTD-MOGs shows great potential for trace heavy metals removal from real water. • DFT provides a local coordination cluster model for amorphous MOGs at atomic scale. • Synergistic chelating/monodentate coordination and LMCT enable efficient lead capture. Metal-organic gels (MOGs) have attracted extensive attention in the field of heavy metal removal, owing to their advantages including ease of surface modification, good stability, hierarchical pore structure, tunable functional groups, and mild and facile preparation conditions. However, the existing MOGs still leave considerable room for performance improvement. To produce MOGs with enhanced adsorption sites, high specific surface area, and greater pore volume, this study combined ultrasound-assisted nucleation with a high-concentration reaction strategy and triethylamine-mediated deprotonation, thereby enabling direct coordination between 2,5-Dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) and Zn 2+ . Then, Zn-DMTD-MOGs material with higher-density N and S adsorption sites was successfully synthesized. The material exhibits a disordered particle-stacked amorphous structure with abundant mesopores (3–24 nm). Adsorption experiments demonstrate that the material achieves a trace Pb(II) removal efficiency of 96.98% within 10 s. The material achieves wide applicability over a low concentration range (≤ 42 mg/L) and a broad pH range (3.5–10.5), along with favorable stability, good reusability, and applicability to real water matrices. A local coordination cluster model was obtained through density functional theory (DFT) geometry optimization, and a synergistic chelating/monodentate coordination and ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism was established. The analysis reveals that the material adsorbs Pb(II) primarily through chelation at dual N/S sites and monodentate coordination at single S sites. This mechanism endows Zn-DMTD-MOGs with ultrafast adsorption kinetics and excellent cyclic stability, making them promising candidates for heavy metal remediation in drinking water sources. A key challenge in trace heavy metals removal from drinking water by adsorption technology is to achieve high adsorption capacity and rapid uptake speed of adsorbent. Herein, we report a functionalized double modified covalent organic framework (DMTD–COF–SH) bearing high-density sulfur and nitrogen chelating groups provided simultaneously by 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) and 1,2-ethanedithiol, which was prepared via a facile one-pot thiol-ene “click” reaction. PXRD , FTIR, XPS, SEM, BET and 13 C MAS NMR confirmed their successful graft, and DMTD was found to be more easily grafted on the COF surface layer than 1,2-ethanedithiol. The as-prepared DMTD–COF–SH showed remarkable adsorption capacity and ultrafast uptake dynamics to trace heavy metals owing to the synergistic effects resulting from densely populated sulfur and nitrogen chelating groups within ordered COF mesopores and at the COF surface. On the basis of the drinking water treatment units standard NSF/ANSI 53–2020, when the adsorbent dosage was 10 mg/30 mL and 20 mg L −1 calcium ions coexisted, the lead concentration decreased from initial 150 μg L −1 to 2.89 μg L −1 within 10 s, far below the allowable limit of world health organization (WHO) drinking water standard (10 μg L −1 ), and the maximum adsorption capacity meeting the standard attained 14.22 mg g −1 . The adsorbent also exhibited excellent stability, wide applicable pH range and outstanding adsorption performance for coexisting trace lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium (VI) and copper in tap water, indicating that the DMTD–COF–SH material has excellent application prospect for trace heavy metals removal from drinking water.
