Numerous chiral drugs have been developed for neurological diseases, but chiral drug safety and pharmacological research still faces great challenges in enantioselectivity and sensitivity of chiral analysis. A rapid, stable and high-efficiency gold nanodendrite-based electrochemical sensing method was proposed as a versatile differential potential ratiometric strategy for highly selective chiral recognition of dual 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) enantiomers . Using simple electrochemical deposition, the gold nanodendrite (AuND) membrane was steadily modified on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with high specific chiral identifiability and robust signal amplifiability. Based on a sequence of systematic optimization, an apparent potential difference (PD) was detected up to 108 mV from oxidation peaks of DOPA enantiomers . Furthermore, according to a regulatable concentration range from 10 μM to 100 μM, different proportions of L-/ d -DOPA had a good linear relationship with corresponding peak potentials ( Eps ) in the racemic mixture. Superior to traditional enantiorecognition of single chiral drug, both DOPA enantiomers enabled to be simultaneously distinguished with high repeatability, selectivity, and anti-interference ability on the AuND/GCE. This unique semi-quantitative AuND-based potential sensing strategy was proposed to efficiently quantify the proportion of L-/ d -DOPA for chiral drug recognition, emerging positive potential for numerous applications in pharmacology and clinical diagnosis.

In this work, we present a pair of chiral PEDOT derivatives named poly((R)-2-(chloromethyl)-2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxine) ((R)-PEDTC) and poly((S)-2-(chloromethyl)-2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxine) ((S)-PEDTC), which were employed as excellent chiral recognition materials for fabricating chiral sensors and then discriminating between 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) enantiomers. Importantly, the mechanism of the stereospecificity of the interaction between the DOPA enantiomers and chiral polymers was discussed specifically. A series of performances of corresponding polymers were characterized in some detail using different strategies including CV, CD, FT-IR, UV-vis, SEM, and TG. The CD spectrum indicated that (R)-PEDTC and (S)-PEDTC are mirror symmetric. CV shows that the polymers had superior redox reversibility in CH3CN–Bu4NPF6. Finally, different electrochemical methods including CV, square wave voltammetry (SWV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were introduced for the discrimination of DOPA enantiomers. Satisfactory measurement results demonstrated that (R)-PEDTC/GCE and (S)-PEDTC/GCE exhibited excellent enantioselectivity of DOPA enantiomers and the tendency was for anisotropic interaction between (R)-PEDTC and L-DOPA, and (S)-PEDTC and D-DOPA. This implied that the obtained polymer films could be promising candidates as enantioselective materials in the electrochemical sensor field.

An electrochemical sensor was explored for recognizing 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) enantiomers based on L-cysteine covalently binding with the multi-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid (MWCNTs-PTCA-Cys). Here two different ways of square wave voltammetry (SWV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were utilized to investigate the stereospecific interaction between the MWCNTs-PTCA-Cys nanocomposite and DOPA enantiomers. The D-DOPA and L-DOPA exhibited different response in both CV and SWV, in addition, the difference in SWV was more obvious and reached to 264.9 μA, suggesting that the enantiomers could be successfully distinguished by MWCNTs-PTCA-Cys nanocomposite, and the selection of electrochemical technique played an important role in enantioselective recognition. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limits of D-DOPA and L-DOPA were 2.5 μM and 4.6 μM (S/N = 3), respectively, with a linear range of 1.0 × 10−5 M to 5.0 × 10−3 M. This work provided a simple method to recognize and determine DOPA enantiomers with rapid response, excellent recognition ability, high sensitivity and good stability.

A new nanocomposite of L-tryptophan functionalized graphene-supported platinum nanoparticles (L-Trp-rGO@PtNPs) was synthesized utilizing a facile ultrasonic method via π–π conjugate action between graphene-supported platinum nanoparticles and L-tryptophan (L-Trp) molecules. The prepared nanomaterial, which dispersed well in water and presented excellent conductivity, was modified on a glassy carbon electrode (L-Trp-rGO@PtNPs/GCE) for the chiral sensing of DOPA enantiomers. The immobilization process of L-Trp-rGO@PtNPs/GCE was characterized by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrometry and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical reactions of DOPA enantiomers were investigated via differential pulse voltammetry. The proposed electrochemical method showed excellent enantiospecificity for DOPA enantiomers and exhibited a stronger enantiospecificity for D-DOPA. In addition, the experimental parameters such as the concentration, the amount of L-Trp-rGO@PtNPs and the pH values were optimized. Under optimum conditions, the linear response ranges for the discrimination of DOPA were from 5.0 × 10−8 to 5.0 × 10−3 mol L−1 with a detection limit of 1.7 × 10−8 mol L−1 (S/N = 3).
