This work investigated the effect of Desulfovibrio caledoniensis (D. caledoniensis) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) on the microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) behaviour of 70Cu-30Ni alloy using surface analysis and electrochemical techniques. The results demonstrated that the mixed medium containing D. caledoniensis and P. aeruginosa further accelerated the MIC of 70Cu-30Ni alloy compared to the single species medium. The addition of exogenous pyocyanin (PYO) to the D. caledoniensis medium increased the maximum pit depth on 70Cu-30Ni alloy from 5.40 μm to 6.59 μm, and the corrosion current density (icorr) increased by one order of magnitude. From the perspective of bioenergetics and extracellular electron transfer (EET), the comprehensive MIC mechanism of 70Cu-30Ni alloy induced by D. caledoniensis and P. aeruginosa was proposed.

Fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) is the key demethylase that reverses the abnormally altered N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification in eukaryotic cells under environmental pollutants exposure. Arsenic is an environmental metalloid and can cause severe symptoms in human mainly through drinking water. However, there is no specific treatment for its toxic effects due to the uncovered mechanisms. We previously revealed that exposure to arsenic increased the level of m6A via down-regulation of FTO, which might serve as a potential target for intervention against arsenic-related disorders. In this study, our results demonstrated that chronic exposure to arsenic significantly disrupted the intestinal barrier and microenvironment. Also, this administration resulted in the enhancement of m6A modification and the reduction of FTO expression in the intestine. By using both CRISPR/Cas9-based FTO knock-in strategy and adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated overexpression of FTO in the intestine, we established for the first time that up-regulation of FTO remarkably ameliorated arsenic-induced disruption of intestinal barriers and altered microenvironment of mice. We also firstly identified a dominant gut microbial species, Desulfovibrio fairfieldensis, which was sharply reduced in arsenic-exposed mice, was able to proceed arsenic-induced neurobehavioral impairments by declining the levels of its major metabolite hydrogen sulfide. Administration of Desulfovibrio fairfieldensis could significantly alleviate the neurotoxicity of arsenic. Intriguingly, the beneficial effects of FTO against arsenic neurotoxicity possibly occurred through a novel gut–brain communication via Desulfovibrio fairfieldensis and its produced hydrogen sulfide. Collectively, these findings will provide new ideas for understanding the mechanisms of arsenic-induced toxic effects from a gut–brain communication perspective, and will assist the development of explicit intervention strategy via regulation of a new potential target FTO for prevention and treatment against arsenic-related both intestinal and neurological disorders.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has gained increasing attention among researchers due to its significance in energy conversion. However, the sluggish kinetics of the OER present notable challenges. In this work, we present an energy-efficient, cost-effective, widely applicable, and scaled-up biological preparation method to prepare OER catalytic materials with high activity and stability based on bacteria and inexpensive Ni-Fe foam under mild conditions. Anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio caledoniensis and aerobic Pseudomonas stutzeri are the typical microorganisms and the OER performance of their products is not clear. Electrochemical measurements show that the catalyst prepared via D. caledoniensis exhibits a low overpotential of only 247 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 and a low Tafel slope of 46 mV dec -1 , while the catalyst prepared via P. stutzeri has an overpotential and Tafel slope of 259 mV and 71 mV dec -1 , respectively. Therefore, these catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activities. Furthermore, they have a good stability of more than 40 h at 10 mA cm −2 which is far superior to that of the majority of reported NiFe-based OER catalysts. This work shows new insights into the preparation and development of high-performance OER catalysts in mild conditions.

Uranium (U) mining and nuclear operations introduce U into the environment, posing a dual threat of radioactive and heavy metal pollution. Given its economic feasibility and high selectivity, bioremediation technology plays a crucial role in this endeavor. Herein, a sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) Desulfovibrio multispirans H1MTZ23 was isolated from U mine soil. This study investigated the removal efficiency and underlying mechanisms of low-concentration U by this microorganism, with a particular focus on its mediated biomineralization process. Results indicated that the optimal pH for uranium adsorption by H1MTZ23 was 6, with a maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of 212.8 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics of H1MTZ23 followed the pseudo-second-order model. Under varying hydrochemical conditions in growth systems (U: 0.25–5.0 mg/L; SO 4 2- : 338–6000 mg/L), the U removal efficiency ranged from 77.33% to 100%. The removal of U by strain H1MTZ23 resulted from the synergy of three processes: biosorption, bioreduction, and biomineralization. A potential biomineralization process of U by H1MTZ23 has been proposed, involving the following stages: surface adsorption, amorphous precipitation, crystallization, and crystal growth. This process begins with the formation of amorphous uranium precipitates, which subsequently transform into crystalline phases and gradually grow, ultimately resulting in the formation of large, needle-like, and schistose U minerals. These minerals are distributed both on the cell surface and within the periplasmic space. In summary, H1MTZ23 exhibits strong removal efficiencies for U and SO 4 2- , indicating significant potential for bioremediation of weakly acidic, U-containing wastewater with high sulfate content.

D-phenylalanine (D-Phe) was tested for its effect on the corrosion of Q235 carbon steel caused by Desulfovibrio sp. which belongs to sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). Weight loss results indicated that the corrosion rate of Q235 coupons exposed to D-Phe was reduced. Much less pits were found on the surface of these coupons. It was found that pH and dissolved oxygen content of bacteria cultures as well as the growth of bacteria were not affected by D-Phe. However, the cell shape of D . sp. was changed to a more filamentous or spherical shape by treatment with D-Phe, and the structure of biofilms formed by bacteria with transformed shapes was looser and thinner. Moreover, the hydrogen sulfide production of D . sp. was inhibited by D-Phe. These results suggest that D-Phe may inhibit the corrosion process through two ways, i, D-Phe alters the bacteria shape, which inhibits the formation of biofilm and changes the structure of it consequently; ii, D-Phe reduces the production of hydrogen sulfide .

Sulfate-containing wastewater has a serious threat to the environment and human health. Microbial technology has great potential for the treatment of sulfate-containing wastewater. It was found that nano-photocatalysts could be used as extracellular electron donors to promote the growth and metabolic activity of non-photosynthetic microorganisms. However, nano-photocatalysts could also induce oxidative stress and damage cells. Therefore, the interaction mechanism between photosynthetic nanocatalysts and non-photosynthetic microorganisms is crucial to determine the regulatory strategies for microbial wastewater treatment technologies. In this paper, the mechanism and regulation strategy of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) on the growth of sulfate-reducing bacteria and the sulfate reduction process were investigated. The results showed that the sulfate reduction efficiency could be increased by 6.4% through CdS NPs under light conditions. However, the growth of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans C09 was seriously inhibited by 55% due to the oxidative stress induced by CdS NPs on cells. The biomass and sulfate reduction efficiency could be enhanced by 6.8% and 5.9%, respectively, through external addition of humic acid (HA). At the same time, the mechanism of the CdS NPs strengthening the sulfate reduction process by sulfate bacteria was also studied which can provide important theoretical guidance and technical support for the development of microbial technology combined with extracellular electron transfer (EET) for the treatment of sulfate-containing wastewater.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) play a crucial role in the microbial remediation of groundwater contaminated with radioactive uranium. In this study, EPSs were extracted from Desulfovibrio vulgaris UR1, a highly efficient uranium-reducing bacterium isolated from a uranium mining area, using six different treatment methods: heating, ultrasonication, centrifugation, pH adjustment, the addition of EDTA-2Na, and the use of a cation exchange resin. The physicochemical properties of the extracted EPSs were characterized through adsorption experiments and spectroscopic analyses. Compared with the other methods, heating at 318 K resulted in the highest EPS extraction amount of 63.36 mg·g –1 dry cell, while the cell viability was maintained above 80%. The extraction method significantly influenced the contents of protein and polysaccharide in the EPSs. EPSs obtained by heating at 318 K exhibited a uranium adsorption capacity of up to 454.85 mg·g –1 , with carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in proteins identified as the primary functional groups responsible for adsorption. This work investigated the extraction methods and uranium adsorption performance of EPSs from Desulfovibrio vulgaris UR1, contributing to a better understanding of the adsorption mechanisms and resistance strategies of microorganisms in anaerobic groundwater environments contaminated with uranium.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an efficient approach to converting energy existing in waste into electricity. However, MFCs still face problems such as low electron transfer rate and low power density. Herein, the anode properties dominate the performance of MFC. This study manufactured a high-performance MnCo 2 S 4 –CoS 1.097 /carbon black carbon felt (T-MCS-CS/CB-CF) anode through a two-step hydrothermal method . T-MCS-CS/CB catalyst exhibited superior surface roughness and mesoporous structure. Besides, the excellent electrocatalytic activity of the T-MCS-CS/CB catalyst with the heterostructure resulted in the higher power output. After biofilm formation, T-MCS-CS/CB-CF anode exhibited lower Rct (9.29 Ω) than MnCo 2 S 4 -Co 4 S 3 / carbon black carbon felt (MCS-CS/CB-CF (15.83 Ω)), carbon black carbon felt (CB-CF (29.52 Ω)) and CF anode (116.1 Ω), exhibiting higher electrochemical activity. T-MCS-CS/CB-CF anode enhanced extracellular electron transfer (EET) and improved the power density, which was 12.29 times higher (1299.27 mW/m 2 ) than the bare CF (105.70 mW/m 2 ). The relative abundance of Geobacter for T-MCS-CS/CB-CF (21.65 %) was 7.24 times higher than the control CF anode (2.99 %). Moreover, T-MCS-CS/CB modification enriched exoelectrogens/sulfate-reducing bacteria, Desulfovibrio , 4.69 % higher than the CF anode, which attributed to the introduction of CoS 1.097 . The excellent electrocatalytic activity, surface properties and biocompatibility of T-MCS-CS/CB-CF promoted the power output in MFC. This study provided an effective way of anodic electrocatalyst fabrication for enhancing the power generation of MFC.

Biosynthetic metal sulfides showed great application prospects in the environmental treatment against high-valence metal pollutants. However, the efficiency of biosynthesis, agglomeration during the reaction process, and the formation of the passivation layer during the reduction process were always the important factors restricting its development. This study explored the composition of the culture medium to promote the growth of highly corrosive sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and its metabolism to produce FeS nanoparticles (NPs). The results showed that reducing the carbon source (CS) and adding electron carriers in the culture medium effectively promoted the production of small, dispersed, and loose FeS NPs in cells. At pH = 7, 24 °C and 10 min reaction time, 0.1 g/L FeS NPs produced by SRB under the conditions of 10 % CS with 10 ppm cytochrome c medium could achieve 100 % removal efficiency of 1 mM hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Under this condition, FeS NPs could be produced by intracellular metabolism in SRB cells, and environmental factors such as pH, metal cations, and Cl − had little effect on the removal of Cr(VI) by this FeS NPs. The surface proteins of FeS NPs significantly enhanced their antioxidant properties. After 7 days of natural environment exposure, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency of FeS NPs was only reduced by 16 % compared with the initial sample. This work provided an in-depth understanding of Cr(VI) removal by SRB biosynthesis of FeS and contributes to the widespread application of FeS in the future.

A high-fat diet (HFD) causes hyperlipidemia, which worsens disturbances in bile acid (BA) metabolism and gut microbiota. This study aimed to investigate the regulation of flavonoids from whole-grain oat (FO) on BA metabolism and gut microbiota in HFD-induced hyperlipidemic mice. The experiment results showed that FO improved serum lipid profiles and decreased body weight and lipid deposition in HFD-fed mice. Through real-time qualitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blot assays, by up-regulating the expression of PPARα, CPT-1, CYP7A1, FXR, TGR5, NTCP, and BSTP, and down-regulating those of SREBP-1c, FAS, and ASBT, FO suppressed lipogenesis, promoted lipolysis and BA synthesis, and efflux to faeces via the FXR pathway. 16s rRNA sequencing revealed that FO significantly increased Akkermansia and significantly decreased Lachnoclostridium, Blautia, Colidextribacter, and Desulfovibrio. Spearman’s correlation analysis showed that these bacteria were strongly correlated with hyperlipidemia-related parameters. Therefore, our results indicated that FO possessed an antihyperlipidemic effect via regulating the gut–liver axis, i.e., BA metabolism and gut microbiota.

Poria cocos, a widely accepted function food in China, has multiple pharmacological activities. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect and molecular mechanism of Poria cocos oligosaccharides (PCOs) against dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced mouse colitis. In this study, BALB/c mice were treated with 3% (w/v) DSS for seven days to establish a colitis model. The results showed that oral administration of PCOs (200 mg per kg per day) significantly reversed the changes in the physiological indices in colitis mice, including body weight, disease activity index scores (DAI), spleen index, and colon length. From the qRT-PCR assay, it was observed that PCOs suppressed the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as Tnf-α, Il-1β, and Il-6. In addition, PCOs protected the intestinal barrier from damage by promoting the expression of mucins and tight junction proteins at both mRNA and protein levels. Upon 16S rDNA sequencing, it was observed that PCO treatment partly reversed the changes in the gut microbiota of colitis mice by selectively regulating the abundance of specific bacteria. And Odoribacter, Muribaculum, Desulfovibrio, Oscillibacter, Escherichia–Shigella, and Turicibacter might be the critical bacteria in improving colitis via PCOs. Finally, using antibiotic mixtures to destroy the intestinal bacteria, we documented that PCO fermentation broth (PCO FB) instead of PCOs prevented the occurrence of colitis in gut microbiota-depleted mice. In conclusion, PCOs showed a protective effect on colitis by reversing gut microbiota dysbiosis. Our study sheds light on the potential application of PCOs as a prebiotic for treating colitis.
