Due to the good hydrophobicity and chemical resistance of poly(ethylene trifluoroethylene) (ECTFE), it has been an attractive potential material for microfiltration, membrane distillation and more. However, few porous hydrophobic ECTFE membranes were prepared by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) for membrane condenser applications. In this work, the diluent, di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP), was selected to prepare the dope solutions. The calculated Hassen solubility parameter indicated that ECTFE has good compatibility with DnOP. The corresponding thermodynamic phase diagram was established, and it has been mutually verified with the bi-continuous structure observed in the SEM images. At 30 wt% ECTFE, the surface contact angle and liquid entry pressure reach their maximum values of 139.5° and 0.71 MPa, respectively. In addition, some other basic membrane properties, such as pore size, porosity, and mechanical properties, were determined. Finally, the prepared ECTFE membranes were tested using a homemade membrane condenser setup. When the polymer content is 30 wt%, the corresponding results are better; the water recovery and condensed water yield is 17.6% and 1.86 kg m−2h−1, respectively. Keywords:membrane condenser;hydrophobic membrane;ECTFE membrane;thermally induced phase separation

As a new separation technology, membrane condensation requires simple equipment and mild operating conditions and has wide application potential and value in the process of water vapor recovery and chemical concentration and recovery. In this paper, we have proposed a new application process to incorporate nano-SiO2 into ECTFE membranes and apply them in the membrane condensation process. The fabrication of ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer (ECTFE)/SiO2 hybrid membranes is performed by incorporating hydrophobic nano-SiO2 during ECTFE membrane preparation, with varying ECTFE/SiO2 compositions achieved through SiO2 dosage adjustments. It can be found that SiO2 can change the structure of membrane during the process; hence, the impact of SiO2 removal after membrane formation on membrane performance was evaluated. SiO2 removal was conducted using a 1 mol/L hot alkali solution with continuous agitation for 24 h. A maximum water recovery rate of 24% (adequate for industrial water self-sufficiency) was attained at 2 wt % SiO2. Compared with the original membrane, the addition of hydrophobic nano-SiO2 significantly enhances the condensation performance of the ECTFE membrane.

Poly(ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (ECTFE) membrane is a hydrophobic membrane material that can be used to recover water from high-humidity gases in the membrane condenser (MC) process. In this study, ECTFE membranes were prepared by the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method using the green binary diluents triglyceride diacetate (TEGDA) and trioctyl trimellitate (TOTM). Thermodynamic phase diagrams of the ECTFE/TEGDA: TOTM system were made. The effects of the diluent composition and cooling rate on the structure and properties of the ECTFE membranes were investigated by characterizing the SEM, contact angle, mechanical properties, pore size and porosity. The results showed that ECTFE membranes with cellular structure were successfully prepared and exhibit good mechanical properties. Moreover, increasing the TOTM content in the binary diluents and decreasing the cooling rate could effectively improve the mean pore size of the ECTFE membranes, but the increase in TOTM content reduced the mechanical properties. During the MC process, the water recovery performance of ECTFE membranes increased with the increase in the mean pore size of the membranes, and the condensation flow and water recovery of membrane prepared at 20% TOTM were 1.71 kg·m−2·h−1and 54.84%, respectively, which were better than the performance of commercial hydrophobic PVDF membranes in the MC. These results indicated that there is good potential for the application of ECTFE membranes during the MC process. Keywords:ECTFE membrane;membrane condenser;binary diluents

The removal of oil from water surfaces is crucial for protecting the environment and living organisms from the hazards posed by industrial oily wastewater and offshore oil spills. However, achieving enhanced mechanical robustness, corrosion resistance, and durability in oil-water separation membranes presents a significant challenge. In this study, poly(ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene) (ECTFE) resin, a novel semicrystalline polymer material composed of alternating ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene molecules, was fabricated into melt-blown fabric (MB) by melt-blowing technology. By optimizing the side wind temperature, collector distance, roller speed, and hot air pressure, ECTFE MB with superior mechanical properties was established. Additionally, the obtained ECTFE MB exhibited excellent hydrophobicity with a water contact angle reaching 127.8°. The separation efficiency for various oil-water mixtures (oil phase including carbon tetrachloride, petroleum ether, dichloromethane, n-hexane, and isooctane) exceeded 99 %. Furthermore, after 90 cycles of oil-water separation, ECTFE MB maintained high flux (72183.16 L m −2 h −1 ) and separation efficiency of 99.40 % when carbon tetrachloride was used as oil phase. Notably, ECTFE MB demonstrated exceptional resistance to harsh environments, including strong acids, bases, and mild high temperature. The investigation of failure modes of ECTFE MB revealed that the primary failure mode of ECTFE MB was the disruption of the oil-water interface. The maximum water height that the ECTFE MB could withstand was 1376 mm. Consequently, ECTFE MB exhibit excellent mechanical properties, chemical stability, and cycling stability, indicating the potential application in the field of oil-water separation.

Traditional nanofiltration membranes often struggle to maintain stability in harsh environments due to issues like swelling, chemical bond dissociation, and polymer chain creep. Fluoropolymers like poly(ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (ECTFE) are promising substrate candidates for broad-spectrum corrosion-resistant nanofiltration (CRNF) membranes, but their solvent insolubility and hydrophobicity present significant processing challenges. This study harnesses the electrospinnability and abundant reactive sites of polyvinyl alcohol to create a reactive site-bridged nanofibrous network. This network provides reactive sites to decorate the hydrophobic ECTFE substrate and bridges the molecular selective layer through aldolization, Schiff base reactions, and esterification. The resulting robust thin-film nanofibrous composite membranes exhibit high rejection rates for small molecular dyes under a variety of harsh conditions, including exposure to 10 wt% H 2 SO 4 , 1 M NaOH, ethanol, N , N -dimethylformamide, N -methylpyrrolidone, and 80°C solutions. This work paves the way for designing next-generation broad-spectrum CRNF membranes, enhancing their applicability in diverse harsh environments.

In this study, TiO 2 particles were dispersed into ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymers (ECTFE), and TiO 2 /ECTFE composite coating was prepared with the TiO 2 /ECTFE mixture via electrostatic spraying and low temperature thermal processing. The prepared coating was soaked in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution under lighting or dark for anticorrosion performance study. The microstructure of the treated coating was characterized with XRD , Raman, FT-IR and SEM. The results indicate that the low frequency impedance (|Z| 0.01 Hz ) of the TiO 2 /ECTFE coating maintained above the 10 9 orders of magnitude after 90-day soaking. It is evident that the addition of TiO 2 enhances the protective performance of the coating on steel, while simultaneously compromising its own integrity. With increasing soaking time, C-H groups in ECTFE coating would be exposed gradually and lighting would speed this process, making the surface roughness of coating reduced. This is because halogens in the polymer chain of ECTFE would be stretched gradually. TiO 2 would also change the bond length of C-H groups and make the C-H groups oxidized under lighting. The strengthening effect of TiO 2 can be ascribed to the filler and barrier effects of TiO 2 particles together with the prior consumption of dissolved oxygen by photo-generated electrons. However, the fast degradation of TiO 2 /ECTFE coating under lighting is the result of local agglomeration of TiO 2 particles, and oxidation of the C-H groups by photo-generated holes.

In this study, a surface grafting modification strategy for TiO2 using the silane coupling agent γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) was employed, and a fluororesin-based anticorrosion coating with synergistic photogenerated cathodic protection and physical barrier effects was prepared by electrostatic spraying followed by thermal treatment. By combining microstructural characterization, photoelectrochemical performance analysis, and molecular dynamics simulations, the mechanisms by which photoresponsive behavior enhances corrosion protection performance were systematically investigated. The results indicate that KH560 can condense with surface hydroxyl groups on TiO2 to form Ti–O–Si covalent bonds, effectively suppress TiO2 agglomeration, and improve TiO2 dispersion and interfacial compatibility within the ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE) matrix, thereby producing a denser physical barrier. The long alkyl chains of KH560 further enhance the coating’s hydrophobicity (water contact angle = 96.8°). After modification, the coating showed a marked increase in photocurrent density, which is attributed to an enlarged photoresponsive area and improved charge-carrier separation efficiency resulting from better dispersion. This promotes migration of photogenerated electrons to the metallic substrate and enables sustained photogenerated cathodic protection. Consequently, in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution, KH560-TiO2/ECTFE exhibited optimal long-term protective performance under both lighting and dark conditions, and an appropriate TiO2 loading combined with surface modification did not readily induce oxidative degradation of the coating matrix. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that KH560 modification reduces the system’s free-volume fraction and strengthens interfacial interactions between TiO2 and ECTFE, thereby effectively suppressing the diffusion of water molecules and chloride ions (with diffusion coefficients as low as 0.896 × 10–9 m2/s and 1.928 × 10–10 m2/s, respectively).

Two hydrophobic porous ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE) membranes quenched in water and air were fabricated by thermally induced phase separation and used for water recovery from ammonia-containing humid gas via vapor condensation. The ECTFE membranes were further hydrophobically modified to enhance their condensation performance. The condensate water quality of the modified membrane significantly improved. The mechanisms of the NH3 contamination in the condensate water were discussed. Surface hydrophobic modification slightly increased the flux and recovery stabilities of the membranes. However, the modification also increased the membrane surface roughness, which adversely affects the vapor condensation and droplet evolution on the membrane surface and reduced the recovered water quality. From the material perspective, desirable porous membranes for vapor condensation should have high surface hydrophobicity and smoothness and reasonably large pore sizes. The reasonably large pore sizes would promote noncondensable gaseous contaminants (e.g., ammonia) to go through the membrane, thereby improving the recovered water quality.
