The effective and economical removal of heavy metal-organic complexes remain an urgent challenge in the field of industrial wastewater treatment. In this study, Ca-doped ferrihydrite composites and Ca/Al co-doped ferrihydrite composites were synthesized via a simple one-step co-precipitation method and applied for the oxidative removal of EDTA-Cu in a hypochlorite system. The incorporation of Al significantly enhanced the material's stability. The Fe-Ca-Al composite exhibited a catalytic degradation efficiency of 97 % after 4 reaction cycles, representing a 32 % improvement compared to the Ca-doped ferrihydrite (Fe-Ca). Mechanistic studies revealed that the Fe-Ca-Al composite demonstrated strong selective adsorption of the organic moieties in EDTA-Cu over a broad pH range. Moreover, the oxygen vacancies (Ov) induced by Ca and Al co-doping played a crucial role in the enhanced catalytic performance and efficient removal of EDTA-Cu. These abundant Ov promoted electron transfer and provided numerous surface adsorption sites, facilitating the conversion of O 2 · - to 1 O 2 . Given that 1 O 2 can rapidly degrade organic compounds containing amino and carboxyl groups, it shows excellent potential for the treatment of EDTA-Cu. This study presents a highly active and reusable catalyst based on a Ca-Al doping strategy, offering a promising approach for the removal of organic-heavy metal complexes.

As an efficient metal-trapping agent, conventional dithiocarbamate is prone to poor flocculation, and difficult recovery, and it is challenging to reuse it in applications. In our study, to address these problems, a novel and efficient chelating agent was developed in the form of a magnetic dithiocarbamate chelating resin. This resin was used to adsorb EDTA-Cu from wastewater. Furthermore, the Cu absorption mechanism of the new resin was investigated. The magnetic dithiocarbamate chelating resin is a composite polymer material with dithiocarbamate functional groups and a good magnetic response. The resin showed a high Cu removal efficiency of 99.19%, and an improved sedimentation performance. Moreover, the resin can be effectively recycled, and it was reused twice after desorption with 4% thiourea, it retained an absorption rate of 89.95%. The adsorption mechanism was based on chemical adsorption. The sulfur atoms of the resin had coordinated with the Cu of EDTA-Cu and formed a stable coordination compound. This research of the resin not only enriches the metal-trapping agent, but also provides a new idea for treating low concentration complex metal pollutants.

Methamphetamine (METH) is a potent psychostimulant with a high potential for addiction, ranking among the most prevalent and frequently abused illicit substances worldwide. Thus, the development of rapid and precise methodologies for METH detection is essential for law enforcement and public health monitoring. This study reported the first construction of a molecularly imprinted fluorescence sensor utilizing EDTA-Cu quantum dots (EDTA-Cu QDs-MIP) for the fluorescence quantification of methamphetamine. The sensor displayed a linear response within a concentration range spanning from 53 to 371 nM, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) equal to 20.6 nM through fluorescence spectroscopy. Validation with real-world samples confirmed the sensor's high accuracy, with recovery rates in the range from 97.2 to 104.4 %. This study not only broadens the scope of QDs in chemical detection but also introduces a strong and portable platform for forensic investigations and on-site screening of illicit drugs.

EDTA-complexed heavy metals (EDTA-CHMs), one of the typical contaminants in industrial effluents , present challenges for wastewater purification because of their stability and high solubility over a wide pH range. Selective adsorption of various EDTA-CHMs coexisting in industrial wastewater is crucial for the recovery of heavy metal resources. Hence, investigating the competitive behavior and selective adsorption mechanisms of coexisting EDTA-CHMs during the effluent removal process is worthwhile. In this study, we chose Ferrihydrite (Fh) as the adsorbent and focused on the competitive adsorption behavior of two common EDTA-CHMs (EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) and EDTA-Cr(Ⅲ)) on the Fh surface, as well as their removal mechanisms. For binary systems (EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) and EDTA-Cr(Ⅲ)), the maximum adsorption capacity of Fh for EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) was 17.32 mg/g, but because of the coexisting EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ), adsorption of EDTA-Cr(Ⅲ) by Fh was severely inhibited. In a competition experiment with binary contaminants of different EDTA complexes, Fh consistently exhibited stronger adsorption performance on EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) when the ratio and addition order of EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) and EDTA-Cr(Ⅲ) in the coexisting system was changed, and the valence state of the EDTA-CHMs was the key factor. The adsorption mechanism indicated that Fh could directly adsorb EDTA-CHMs through electrostatic interaction and surface complexation. The recycling rate of EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) was still approximately 70.63% after five cycles of treatment with Na 2 SO 4 solution. This study provides new insights into the adsorption behavior of coexisting EDTA-CHMs on adsorbents and the selective removal of related pollutants.
