Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) could form stable complexes with toxic metals such as nickel due to its strong chelation. The three-dimensional (3D) macroporous graphene aerogels (GA), which was in-situ assembled by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets on titanium wire as binder-free electrode, was presented as cathode for the degradation of EDTA-Ni in Electro-Fenton process. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) results indicated 3D GA formed three dimensional architecture with large and homogenous macropore structure and surface area. Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) and Rotating Ring-disk Electrode (RRDE) results showed that the 3D GA cathode at pH 3 displayed the highest current density and electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), and better two-electron selectivity for ORR than other pH value, confirming the 3D-GA cathode at pH 3 has the highest electrocatalytic activity and generates more H 2 O 2 . The factors such as pH, applied current density, concentration of Fe 2+ , Na 2 SO 4, and aeration rates of air were also investigated. Under the optimum conditions, 73.5% of EDTA-Ni was degraded after reaction for 2 h. Mechanism analysis indicated that the production of OH on the 3D GA cathode played an important role in the removal of EDTA-Ni in the 3D GA-EF process, where the direct regeneration of Fe 2+ on the cathode would greatly reduce the consumption of H 2 O 2 . Therefore, it is of great promise for 3D-GA catalyst to be developed as highly efficient, cost-effective and durable cathode for the removal of EDTA-Ni.

This study explores an innovative electrochemical strategy for the removal of the highly stable and toxic EDTA-Ni complex found in electroplating wastewater. Utilizing a cobalt-based single-atom catalyst (Co-NC) in an electro-enhanced system, we achieved significant activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for effective degradation of EDTA-Ni. Under optimal conditions of 40 mA current density and a pH range of 3–7, more than 97% of EDTA-Ni (1 mM) was successfully degraded within 90 min. Through detailed electrochemical experiments, we identified that atomic hydrogen (H*) played a crucial role in the indirect activation of PDS, facilitating the formation of reactive sulfate radicals (·SO4-). Computational analysis using density functional theory (DFT) confirmed that the H*-mediated reduction pathway had a notably low energy barrier (ΔGbs = 0.51 eV), making it the dominant activation mechanism. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) further revealed the primary degradation intermediates, providing insights into the breakdown process of EDTA-Ni. This research underscores the potential of Co-NC catalyst as a highly effective catalyst for treating persistent heavy metal complexes in advanced oxidation systems.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) could form stable complexes with toxic metals such as nickel due to its strong chelation. In this study, with the same doping level of Co and N, MoO 2 and ZIF-67 were used as precursors to prepare MoO 2 @Co/N and FeC@Co/N electrocatalysts for the modified graphite felt cathodes in heterogeneous-electro-Fenton-like reaction (HEFL) system. The X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that both of the catalysts are dominated with pyridinic N (2.42% and 2.82%) upon co-doping Co/N, and FeC@Co/N exhibited an obviously higher additional sp -hybridized nitrogen ( sp -N) peak. The co-doping of Co/N induced the lattice modifications to produce more lattice defects, where pyridinic N and sp -N, related with the active sites (C–N, Co-Nx), were formed at near-ring defects along sheet edges through the nitrogen replacement of C C groups. FeC@Co/N demonstrated superior oxygen reduction reaction catalytic activity in terms of Cyclic Voltammetry and Rotating Ring-disk Electrode, and exhibited the remarkably higher current density (30 mA) and lower onset potential (−0.208 V) in Linear Sweep Voltammetry analysis. In the FeC@Co/N/CF modified HEFL system, despite the generated H 2 O 2 concentrations (62.5 mg L −1 ) is not very high, the reducing reaction of ≡Fe(III)/Co(III)–OH could get the electron directly from the cathode, which would greatly reduce the consumption of H 2 O 2, high utilization efficiency of H 2 O 2 (η: 87.63%) could greatly improve the EDTA-Ni removal (97.5%) and TOC (92.6%). This work demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing FeC@Co/N/CF as a cathode for breaking metal-complex in HEFL process.

A novel redox polymer comprised of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid-Ni 2+ (EDTA-Ni) complex serving as doping anions has been synthesised by a facile one-step electrochemical approach and utilized as an efficient electrode material for sensitive luteolin detection. The morphology, chemical structure and composition of the redox polymer were analyzed by SEM, UV-vis and FT-IR spectrum. Electrochemical tests revealed that the redox polymer was highly electrochemically reversible and exhibited good electrocatalytic activity to the redox reactions of luteolin with a linear range covering from 1 nM to 10 µM with a low detection limit of 0.3 nM of luteolin.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) forms stable complexes with toxic metals such as nickel due to its strong chelation. The electro-Fenton (EF) process using a cathode made from palladium (Pd), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and carbon felt, fed with air, exhibited high activities and stability for the removal of 10 mg L −1 EDTA-Ni solution. Pd/RGO catalyst was prepared by one-pot synthesis; the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated nanoparticles and RGO were well distributed on carbon felt, forming three dimensional architecture with both large macropores and a mesoporous structure. The cyclic voltammetric results showed that the presence of RGO in Pd/RGO/carbon felt significantly increased the current response of two-electron reduction of O 2 (0.45 V). The key factors influencing the removal efficiency of EDTA-Ni, such as pH, current and Fe 2+ concentration, were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the removal efficiency of EDTA-Ni reached 83.8% after 100 min EF treatment. Mechanism analysis indicated that the introduction of RGO in Pd/RGO/carbon felt significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic activities by inducing •OH in the EF process; direct H 2 O 2 oxidation still accounted for a large amount of EDTA-Ni removal efficiency.
